on social media the 78-year-old posting this message to fans. >> now, just like 50,000 other people in the united states each year, this week i was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. normally the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but i'm going to fight this and i'm going to keep working and with the love and support of my family and friends and with the help of your prayers also i plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease. >> reporter: just two weeks ago trebek was on the road promoting the 35th season of the show, and this is the second medical scare in as many years. last year trebek took time off the show after a serious fall that required brain surgery, and then he bounced back at the helm of "jeopardy," just like he has been since 1984. >> welcome to america's favorite question and answer game, "jeopardy."

aggressive type of cancer, and it's one of the most difficult cancers to diagnose because it moves so rapidly before you know it. >> the majority of cases are diagnosed when its already spread. our chief medical editor, jennifer explains some of the risk factors to watch for. >> there's no screening test for pancreatic cancer because it's a relatively uncommon cancer but there are risk factors that we know about that people can take steps to reduce, diabetes, obesity, smoking family history certain genetic mutations increase the risk. there is reason for hope. there are a thousand clinical trials for pancreatic cancer in this country and showing progress. >> pancreatic cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death and is often not caught until it's at a late stage. we will have more about alex trebek later in this half hour. but, for now, we turn to former trump fixer, michael cohen who turned over new documents to congress after another closed door session on capitol hill. >> he submitted the documents in

an effort to back up his claim that his previous false statement was edited by one of president trump's current attorneys. sources tell abc news after the fbi raided cohen's home and law office, he was approached by lawyers claiming to have ties to the president's personal attorney, rudy giuliani, and they allegedly tried to keep cohen from flipping. president trump says he would be disappointed in kim jong-un if it's true they are rebuilding a key missile site. satellite images show cranes, vehicles and supplies next to a long-range rocket launch site that was dismantled last year in a show of good will. it has been a week since the summit in hanoi ended without a deal. the president said we'll see what happens. back here at home, general motors is shutting down its plant near youngstown, ohio and eliminating the jobs of 1,700 workers. those unemployed workers say they hope gm can find a way to open the plant that's been operating 52 years. the plant shutdown is the first of five that gm plans by early

next year as part of a major reorganization. celebrity chef mario batali is no longer in the restaurant business. he severed all ties with his business with a long-time business partner that created batali's restaurant. the move comes more than a year after several women accused batali of sexual harassment and assault. no charges have been filed. good news here. the last seven people listed missing have been found alive. that keeps the number dead at 23, including ten from one family. the governor has ordered flags flown at half staff until sunday. now to the weather and another late winter storm is rolling across the nation. it's brought localized flooding and lightning displays to southern california. >> and downtown l.a. got an inch of rain yesterday. that broke the previous record

hosting through this new health battle, asking his ever devoted fan base to pray. >> so help me, keep the faith and we'll win, we'll get it done. thank you. >> reporter: marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. >> we like to think of trebek as our national treasure, but he also belongs to canada. among those offering support for trebek over twitter, canadian prime minister, justin trudeau. >> he says keep fighting, we're rooting for you. trebek was born in canada, and he became a u.s. citizen in 1998 so absolutely a national treasure. pancreatic cancer is a rare and aggressive type of cancer. it is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths. >> a majority of cases are diagnosed when there's no screening tests for it. >> but there are risk factors, that we know about, diabetes, obesity, smoking, family history and certain genetic musicians all increase the risk. there are currently hundreds of clinical trials under way for the disease and many are showing promise. and turning to other news, democrats say michael cohen was fully cooperative during an additional eight hours of

closed door testimony in washington. >> cohen shared another batch of documents with lawmakers, fbi raid last year cohen was approached by two lawyers that tried to keep him from flipping on president trump. abc's pierre thomas has the details. >> reporter: michael cohen back on capitol hill, behind closed doors with the house intelligence committee. president's former fixer, now his sworn enemy. sources tell abc news shortly after the fbi raided his office and home cohen was contacted by two attorneys that had ties to rudy guiliani, president trump's personal lawyer. sources say those attorneys wanted to encourage cohen not to abandon the president, and at the time the president was publicly sympathetic to cohen. >> they broke into the office of one of my personal attorneys. it's a disgraceful situation. >> reporter: before congress last week, cohen said he could not talk about the communications he had with the president or his team after the raid.

a tesla driver may have been too relaxed on the road. video shows what appears to be a man asleep at the wheel while the car was on auto pilot. it happened on a busy l.a. highway, and the person that shot the video said they were moving at 75 miles per hour, and tesla says the car kept moving because the man's hands were on the steering wheel.
