good morning to you. it is thursday, march 7th. 5:00 a.m. you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. meteorologist mike nicco is here. it's another day with rain. >> not quite as much as we've had. it's definitely out there. i wanted to take a look at those of you that have the dumbarton bridge in your future. you have a lot of wet weather falling on it now. in fact, this line stretches from san ramon, crow canyon through castro valley, hayward down to los altos hills. we have some rain moving through the sunol grade heading up

towards the altamont pass. a little bit of rain in half moon bay. that's going to slide across 92 to san mateo. scattered showers, less than .2 inches of rain. locally breezy under the heavier showers. we're definitely cooler today. in fact, more winter-like. we can't get out of the low to mid-50s for the better part of today with the scattered showers. can't shake shows either. even this evening when the temperatures drop into the upper 50s. let's find out about the damp commute. alexis? >> we're looking at a busy bay bridge toll plaza. someone decided at the last second to use the carpool lanes. no metering lights. it will happen pretty soon in the cash lanes and fastrak lanes. we are in the yellow. this is pretty much the only spot. tracy to dublin, coming in at 39 minutes. westbound 4, antioch to concord in the green at 14.

southbound 101, san rafael to san francisco, 15 minutes. so many of us were shocked when we heard from alex trebek yesterday. he's determined to beat his stage 4 pancreatic cancer. he's preparing to undergo treatments and viewers may begin seeing the impacts in the coming months. we have more on the diagnosis. >> he's guided contestants and fans through countless questions. >> here comes the jeopardy round. >> and answers for more than 35 years. the host of jeopardy. >> welcome to america's favorite answer and question game. >> now he's sharing his own personal uncertainty. a stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis. >> normally the prognosis is not very encouraging. i'm going to fight this. >> the 78-year-old posted this video and the straightforward tone with a touch of humor that fans have grown to adore. >> i plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease.

york. >> i didn't realize how common it is becoming in the united states. we just heard that from ucsf in our last half hour. we've posted more information about the symptoms and treatment on our website, abc7news.com. a tragic story in the south bay. a mother and her two children dead after an apparent murder-suicide. police responded to the apartment on dent avenue yesterday afternoon. neighbors tell abc 7, the woman hanged herself after suffocating her two young sons. we're told the father had just returned home from a trip to the grocery store when he was the one who discovered the horrific scene. >> explain to me, he was saying help me, help me. my boys are dead. that's all he said. >> police have not confirmed a motive. one neighbor and family friend believes the mother may have been battling depression. the mother lost her job at a nail salon last summer and the father was not working.

prison on each of those counts. dozens of homeless panned low-income families will have secure housing starting today. they will celebrate the grand opening of a new apartment building on mission near 6th street. it was specifically built to provide affordable housing. residents include 40 formerly homeless families and 43 low-income families. never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. temperatures hovering around 48 to 50 degrees in our east bay valleys. how about other neighborhoods? we are pretty much around 47 in pacifica. san carlos and santa rosa for the cool spots until you get to los gatos. in the mountains, it's 43 there. we've got 52 in oakland, hayward and mountain view. let's look at the temperatures. they are upler this morning. so you may have to dress a little bit warmer. here's a look at san mateo bridge. we're looking towards the west. this is the drier of t sunglasses, take an umbrella? have them ready. if you're headed to the high

country, it's still snowing. another foot possible today. as you can see from the airport in half moon bay to the city itself, redondo beach road, we have light to moderate rain. it's pretty much from san mateo bridge southward and 580 southward that we have a best chance of rain right now. for the north bay, a little bit of sunshine and cloud cover and 53 this afternoon. we start in the mid-40s, end up in the mid-40s. a little bit of a rain here and there. temperatures in the mid-50s. same thing in the peninsula. 52 for most of the afternoon. 40s in the evening hours. we have a chance of rain one day this week. i'll show you that next. here's alexis. good morning, mike.abt. neither one causes a big backup yet. we're keeping an eye on that. northbound 880 before the 980 split, we have reports of a disabled tractor-trailer and that is blocking one lane. chp on the way to the scene. i am seeing a little bit of yellow approaching that. obviously, that's a tough spot

getting no money from me? >> trying to kill me? >> wow. the cook county sheriff's office says kelly will remain in jail until he pays back the more than $160,000 in back child support. in today's gma first look, an indy car driver who somehow survived a horrific crash is talking about his miraculous recovery. here's abc's paula faris. >> in this morning's gma first look, you're watching a terrifying crash that could have been deadly. 29-year-old indy car driver r robert wick ens coming around and crashing into a wall, a fence and another wall at a race last august. he was airlifted to the hospital. his fiance rushed to be by his side. >> they just said he's paralyzed. they didn't know if he was going to make it. >> he has been determined. wickens is making huge strides in the six short months since his accident. now standing on his own, walking

with a walker and pedaling on a bike. >> do you want him back in a car? >> i see all of the work he's putting into everything and i look forward to the day that he gets back in a car. >> we'll have much more of our exclusive interview at 7:00 a.m. with their gma first look, i'm paula faris, abc news. denver. at least three bay area residents contracted measles. all were on an international flight that landed at sfo last month. two of the passengers, one from san francisco, one from santa clara county, got it from another passenger from santa cruz. it's not clear if that person knew they had measles at the time. health officials say the public is at very low risk. so far there are no other reported cases. b.a.r.t. riders see it every day. fare evaders jumping over gates and hopping on to trains without a ticket. now the chronicle reports even if they're caught, they rarely pay their fines. b.a.r.t. fare evasion teams

caught thousands of violators last year. more than 90% of them have yet to pay up. 90%. only 10% are paying. b.a.r.t. was owed more than $497,000 in fines from nearly 6800 violators last year. fewer than 600 of them have paid their fines bringing in $64,000. half of that money went to a private company which processes the tickets. b.a.r.t. was left with just $32,000 from the enforcement program that cost $1.4 million since going into effect last year. i have good news. no tuition increase for in-state undergraduate students in the university california system. tuition is frozen for the 2019-2020 academic year. in-state tuition costs about $13,000 per year. happening today, celebrate women's history month, and international women's day with a conversation with san francisco mayor london breed. the 44-year-old is the first

from possible delays at sfo. that's why i wanted to show it. we have low clouds and drizzle and scattered showers through a mostly cloudy day. 1 on the storm impact scale. showers will taper. a little more sunshine. but the breezes will keep our temperatures below average tomorrow and it will be a little cool because of the breezes. tracking two more light storms from my extended forecast. light rain moving through the sunset. the presidio, ft. mason to about brisbane right now. that's going to exit in about five, ten minutes. you can see the same areas getting rain. hayward towards newark. the dumbarton bridge. the sunol grade into the south bay. that's going to continue through the morning. as we head into the afternoon hours, the clouds open up a little bit. but the breeze keeps us in the range. clear in the north bay, 32 to 38 degrees there. 38 in livermore. 40 to 45 for the rest of us. future radar. at 7:00, a lot of light showers through the morning hours. bee had a little sunshine.

extra energy. yellows pop up as we head towards lunch. that could be a quick burst of heavier rain and breezier conditions. we're starting to lose the energy of the sun. so are the showers. there's a few possible as they move from the ocean to the coast during the latter parts of the evening into the overnight hours. moderate. notice also snow in the santa cruz mountains and the diablo range towards tomorrow morning as the cooler air rushes in. this is really mainly a south bay peninsula and east bay event more so than it is a north bay event. here's a look at my accuweather seven-day forecast. 52 to 58 tomorrow with increasing sunshine. watch out for the breezes. saturday plans may be a washout. move them to sunday. it will be much nicer. remember to set the clocks forward saturday night. alexis? >> all right, mike. overall, we're looking good for the thursday morning commute. checking out the bay bridge toll

earlier this week. rain chances taper after today where we have scattered showers. hi everybody. we have scattered sunshine. less than .2 inches of rain and locally breezy and the heavier showers that develop later. you can see on crow canyon road between san ramon, we have a light shower extending to the eastern part of the san mateo bridge and right on top of the dumbarton bridge. east foothills and down to about morgan hill right now. you can see it's still wet at the golden gate bridge. you find a lot of dampness with the drizzle and rain. temperatures cooler, mid-40s to 50. scattered showers and sunshine. 51 to 53. back in the 40s at 7:00. how about the roads. here's alexis? >> good morning, mike. busier at the bay bridge toll plaza. we got official word that the metering lights were flipped on around 5:24 this morning. cash and fastrak, i'm consolidating words. you've got a typical backup.

carpool lanes moving around without issues. drive times, looking good. westbound 80, highway 4 to the maze, five minutes for you. 880. fremont to san jose, 14 minutes. highway 101 to cupertino, 11 minutes on 280. we went through an east bay teachers strike. it could happen again, different community this time. >> that's right. teachers in san ramon, the san ramon valley unified school district could be on the picket lines soon if things don't resolve. amy hollyfield is in danville. she has an update on the late-night negotiations. they just ended at midnight, right? >> reporter: it was a long day of negotiating. there was a lot of hope they would reach an agreement. talks broke off and they walk away. -- walked away without a deal. both sides say they made a lot of progress. but they can't agree on class sizes. and ratios for support staff, like nurses and counselors.

there is strong support for a strike among the teachers. 98% voted to authorize a strike if a deal isn't reached. negotiators for the teachers want class sizes reduced and they want them to stay that way. >> the sticking point was that management has said to us that they want the authority to be able to retract all of those portions of that class size article three years from now. and we -- that's not acceptable for us. >> reporter: the district says it is taking the same issues as other schools. enrollment in down. so is funding from the state. san ramon valley says it is the fourth lowest funded unified school district in the state. there are no plans to return to the paragraph gang table at this time. teachers could go on strike as early as april if a deal is not reached. reporting live in danville, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. amy, thank you.

happening today, classes resume at richmond high school one day after they had to be canceled because of a power outage. classes will start at 10:00 this morning and go to 2:30. the equipment should be repaired before students return to campus this morning. in the north bay, sonoma county supervisors meet to get an update on the recovery after the russian river flooding. growing piles of trash are a major concern. abc 7 news was in guerneville where people are asking for help. they have to haul debris there. >> we know it floods. i've been through a flood before but not tragic event. but jesus, give us some help here. >> one issue, the2017. the supervisors may turn to the state and federal governments for more flood cleanup money. the abc 7 news i-team

learned a federal judge wants to prohibit pg&e from issuing dividends to investors until it does more to prevent wildfires. it's the latest development in the ongoing court battle involving the utility. as we've reported, the judge overseeing the probation for the san bruno pipeline explosion has ordered the company to trim or remove trees so they don't fall on to power lines and spark wildfires. pg&e says that order is too costly. here's reaction from santa clara law professor katherine sando l sandoval, a former public utilities commissioner. >> i am hoping for an attitude change in pg&e because they have come back a couple of times and said this is impossible, this is overly ambitious. >> a final decision on the judge's order is expected next month. in the north bay, a beloved santa rosa restaurant that burned in the 2017 tubbs fire is starting a new chapter today. tweet t's restaurant is opening in the new location off brooks road in windsor. these are photos from the soft

opening on friday. the owners of the restaurant are promising to serve the same southern inspired dishes guests remember. we tried to get a reservation online but they are successful on their launch week. they're booked until monday. part of highway 1 in big sur is closed. cal trans closed the highway between mud creek and paul slide until further notice. recent storms triggering landslides and cal trans says it has found unstable boulders. mud flowing off the hillside as well. a part of mud creek sunk 3 to 5 feet since last thursday. heads up if you have that drive in mind. cruising the bay to get to oracle park could soon get more expensive. >> transportation officials will hold a public hearing toinput. the san francisco bay ferry provides service from oakland, alameda and vallejo on days the giants play. they need to raise feares to

cover operating costs. if you want a ticket from oakland it alameda, you would pay $9.60. youth and disabled pay a little less. ticket from vallejo would cost much more. $15.90 for an adult. today's hearing starts at 1:00 this afternoon at the port of san francisco. let's take a look at live doppler 7. you can see, yep, a little bit light rain on the peninsula. over towards the east bay. that's westbound it's been and we expect it to be when we talked yesterday. let's talk temperatures. the cooler air is here. clear lake, 42. a lot of us in the 40s in the north bay until you get to novato at 50. same thing in american canyon. how about other neighborhoods. el sobrante, newark, tracy, al immediatea san jose at 51. the rest of us 43 in daly city. here's a look at 101 and 880 where we had a light rain shower roll through. that's why drops on the lens there. we'll have soggy spots for your commute, especially this

morning. a lot drier during the evening hours. mass transit damp today with a chance of scattered showers and it will be calmer. but a little wet from time to time on the bay. here's a look at the rain that moved over 101 and 880. airport boulevard. oakland road. you can see a few light sprinkles there. even steadier rain around the -- evergreen itself. yu your ba buena road. >> mostly cloudy and mid-50s. 49 by 8:00. how about the south bay. chance of some scattered showers around noon and 2:00. they'll be random elsewhere. for san francisco, mostly cloudy today. you have a chance at 6:00 tonight. that's your best chance on the hour of having some rain. with the random nature of the showers, you could have one at any time. it will be lighter than yesterday. alexis and i had to use the wipers a little bit. wasn't too hard to drive through compared to yesterday. >> nothing like yesterday. a million times better than yesterday's commute. the incidents are following suit

pushing 2400 homes in brentwood. the east bay times reports about 80% of the homes would be for seniors. that development would be phased in over several years. the developer is pushing for a ballot measure to expand brentwood's urban limit line allowing the project to move forward. a legendary fortune cookie factory in chinatown may be facing concerns over its own future as rents in san francisco and the rest of the bay area continue exploding. >> abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area. this is one of the concerns that we've been focused on. the increase in rents across th. golden gate fortune cookie factory has been in chinatown for nearly 60 years. one of the owners says he's worried about the future rent hikes. three years ago he says it was $1400 a month. now he says it's more than doubled. >> this is the issue that everybody has to face. the issue that is getting worse and worse.
