say? >> reporter: this morning, r. kelly behind bars again, the second time in just two weeks, now for missing a judge's deadline to pay more than $160,000 in child support and now another allegation of sexual misconduct against kelly. overnight, the detroit police department telling us they're trying to reach a woman who says she was victimized by the singer in 2001 when she was just 13 years old. >> is this camera on me? >> reporter: all of this in the aftermath of that explosive interview, kelly denying those ten counts of sexual misconduct and aggravated sexual abuse charges he was arrested for in february and for which he has pleaded not guilty. >> 30 years of my career and y'all trying to kill me! you're killing me, man! y'all just don't want to believe the truth! >> reporter: the 52-year-old has become a public pariah after allegations of inappropriate relationships with younger women including jocelyn savage and azriel clary, both now in their 20s.

both women spoke with cbs news while the singer was present calling their parents liars after they publicly accused kelly of holding them captive. >> when i first met robert, my parents told me to lie about my age, so when i met him, he thought that i was 18. >> both of our parents are basically out here trying to get money and scam. >> reporter: the family of jocelyn savage claims they haven't had contact in person with their daughter in more than two years. >> i know for a fact my sister is not okay. i know for a fact r. kelly is mentally destroying her. >> reporter: savage calling her family soon after hearing that message. >> i'm happy where i'm at. i told you a million, million times where i am and i am very happy. >> reporter: both the savage and clary families say they never tried to, quote, sell their daughters to r. kelly, that r. kelly is a serial liar. as for the child support

payments, how does r. kelly live in a luxurious condo tower here in chicago, how does he not have the money to pay child support? his spokesperson told us r. kelly doesn't know how to read or write and last month for the first time ever he opened up a bank account for the first time in his name, nonetheless, he's going to have to come up with that money if he wants to get out of jail. >> all right, tom. now to that emotional moment on capitol hill, arizona senator martha mcsally revealing she was sexually assaulted by a superior officer while serving in the air force. our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz has more on this. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin. mcsally is a confident and an accomplished woman a senator, a veteran who blasted to become the first female air force pilot to fly combat missions. but for many of those years she carried a painful secret. it was a powerful and emotional moment, addressing survivors of military assault testifying on capitol hill, senator mcsally revealing she was attacked as well.

>> so, like you, i am also a military sexual assault survivor, but unlike so many brave survivors, i didn't report being sexually assaulted. like so many women and men, i didn't trust the system at the time. i blamed myself. i was ashamed and confused and i thought i was strong but felt powerless. the perpetrators abuse their position of power in profound ways. and in one case i was preyed upon and then raped by a superior officer. >> reporter: and when mcsally did try to seek justice -- >> i was horrified at how my attempt to share generally my experiences were handled. i almost separated from the air force at 18 years over my despair. like many victims, i felt the system was raping me all over again. >> reporter: the senator vowing she will use her powerful position to help others.

>> we must allow, we must demand that commanders stay at the center of the solution and live up to the moral and legal responsibilities that come with being a commander, and if the commander is the problem or fails in his or her duties, they must be removed and held harshly accountable. >> reporter: the air force responding saying this morning, we are appalled and deeply sorry for what senator mcsally experienced and we stand behind her and all victims of sexual assault. robin. >> and the military is saying -- the military overall is saying they're seeing a spike in sexual assaults? >> reporter: they really are, robin, it is a huge problem. the latest statistics show that the military has had a record high number of sexual assaults with nearly 7,000 reported and the service academies have had an astonishing 50% increase in incidents last year, robin. >> 7,000 reported.

we have no idea how many have gone unreported. all right, martha, thank you so much. >> that is such startling testimony right there. >> it is. also in washington, a new twist in the testimony from president trump's former fixer, michael cohen. revealing overnight that he directed his former attorney to discuss a possible pardon with the president's legal team, at odds with cohen's sworn statement to the house oversight committee last week. take a look. >> and i have never asked for nor would i accept a pardon from president trump. >> let's bring in our chief justice correspondent, pierre thomas. and, pierre, that statement pretty definitive. how is cohen's team squaring the contradiction? >> reporter: here's what they're saying, george. number one, lanny davis, cohen's attorney, is arguing that the statement is technically true because he never asked the president directly for a pardon. second, davis says that cohen's public testimony that he never asked for a pardon was intended to reference the period after cohen left his joint defense agreement with trump's team in july, but you can be sure that republicans are going to pounce on this, george. >> no question about that. but cohen has testified that, in fact, these conversations were

going both ways. >> reporter: yeah, sources are telling us that a lawyer connected to trump, attorney rudy giuliani, by the name of robert costello, had multiple contacts with cohen after the fbi raid on his offices. investigators have been looking into whether these communications were intended to influence cohen or implicitly dangle a pardon for cohen. it's unclear prosecutors regard the contacts as illegal or improper. costello tells abc news the story is not accurate and giuliani tells us any time a lawyer raised a possible pardon it was squelched immediately. >> on another front, paul manafort, the president's former campaign chief, is going to be sentenced today for the first time. >> reporter: after years of investigation, multiple trials and convictions, paul manafort today will learn how long he'll be in prison and it may not be a pretty picture. the sentencing guidelines state that manafort faces up to 19 years to 25 years in prison in connection with these many counts including bank and tax fraud. he w alexa

prors sahe s't get any. >> we'll be watching the judge today. thanks very much. the president's former chief of staff, john kelly, also making headlines speaking out for the first time since leaving the white house about his time working in the trump administration. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has the details. good morning, cecilia. there is eye-opening stuff here. >> reporter: yeah, george, there really is some eye-opening stuff here. he was speaking to students at duke university there, there were no cameras allowed inside but we have obtained the audio and one of the big headlines here is just what you said, that this is the first time he's talking publicly since leaving the white house. so what he's not talking about, though, that recent report that he was ordered by the president to approve those high-level security clearances for jared kushner and that was over the recommendation of intelligence officials, but he did have a lot more to say. take a listen to what kelly said if hillary clinton would have won and what his advice is for

his successor, mick mulvaney, the new chief of staff. >> what advice do you give your successor, mulvaney? >> run for it. [ laughter ] you know, just, as i've said repeatedly, just tell him what he needs to hear. if i had gotten a call that hillary clinton had won the presidency, she had called me and said, you know, i really need a good chief of staff here, i'd have probably done it. politics aside, it's all about governing the country. >> so he said he would have taken the job if hillary clinton won and he tells mick mulvaney to run for it. he says being chief of staff is the least enjoyable job he ever had. remember, he's a retired four-star general but he also says that this is the most important thing he's ever done. >> not shy about taking on the president's border policies. >> reporter: yeah, this is a big one here. he now says he's against that controversial child separation policy that we saw roll out along the border. he placed the blame squarely on jeff sessions saying sessions the former attorney general, saying sessions caught the

administration flat-footed, but george, john kelly was -- defended that policy publicly while in the white house. >> and he also spoke out against sending the military to the border as well. cecilia vega, thanks very much. michael. >> all right, thank you, george. now to a big announcement from facebook. the company looking into revolutionizing social networking again and now focus on privacy. abc's diane macedo is here with the details. good morning, diane. >> good morning to you. so the idea behind facebook was to bring people together in what mark zuckerberg calls the digital equivalent of a town square. he says now people want more private communication. the digital equivalent of the living room. in a long blog post, zuckerberg says he has heard his users and his team is now developing technology to make messaging on whatsapp, instagram and facebook messenger more secure so they can rely on them rather than the public facebook feed for communication. the goals he says include making sure no one, not even facebook can see your messages. messages that can disappear after a certain amount of time

and making sure any data that is kept is secure. >> but this is raising a lot of eyebrows out there because facebook doesn't have the best track record when it comes to protecting their users' data. >> zuckerberg even said that. he said we may not be known for privacy right now, but he says we do have a reputation for building sites that people want and he says right now what people want is privacy so facebook is going to deliver that. >> all right, i'm sure he knows better than i do and we do. >> seems like it. turning now to the new video of that amazon cargo plane crash in texas. this surveillance footage from a nearby jail showing the jet plummeting before it hit a bay near houston, unfortunately killing all three on board. the recently recovered flight data recorder shows the pilot started losing control just 18 seconds before the crash. still not known what went wrong. george. we're going to turn now to the outrage growing over a

staggering number of horses dying at one of the most famous racetracks in the world, santa anita. 21 have died there over the last two months. the track is closed now. critics are demanding answers and abc's clayton sandell is in santa anita with the latest. good morning, clayton. >> reporter: good morning, george, i wanted to give you an idea of the conditions here at the track at santa anita. they've had about a foot of rain and it's turned the track into a muddy mess that's making it dangerous for the track's star athletes. >> and they're off. >> reporter: this morning, one of the most fabled tracks in horse racing is empty. santa anita, shut down after a spike in injuries leading to the death of 21 horses in the last 10 weeks including breeders' cup dirt mile champ battle of midway, just dayafter an expert last week declared the track safe -- >> number 4, asking for a drink is being pulled up. >> watch the horse drop back hurt, later put down. the spike in deaths outpacing a total of 20 during the entire 2017 season. animal rights activists are outraged. >> we have a lot of these

beautiful animals are dead now, and who is going to answer to that? >> reporter: santa anita believes the culprit may be lots of rain and colder temperatures changing and hardening the soil, washing away layers of dirt that act as a cushion. they're ordering a new round of inspections and tests before any horse takes the track. >> it's alarming to those of us in the industry. the people that breed the horses, the people that care for them on a daily basis, they have a personal bond. we're taking a major break here and we're going to see to it that everything is the best it can possibly be. >> reporter: the track has been racing horses since the 1930s, often appearing as a famous hollywood backdrop in movies like "seabiscuit." now hoping for a happier ending. now, two big races that were scheduled here this weekend have now been cancelled. that will mean a financial hit for santa anita, but they say they will not put profits ahead of the safety of their horses and jockeys.

detect. >> it has to do really, robin, with the anatomy. i want people to look at an anatomical sketch of where the pancreas is. it sits in the back of the abdomen so any tumors as they grow in that area, doctors, health care professionals can't feel it on exam and typically it doesn't cause symptoms until the cancer is already very large and about 80% of pancreatic cancer unfortunately by the time it's diagnosed has already spread. >> speaking of symptoms, are there symptoms and what are the warning signs people can look out for? >> you know, the thing is that the symptoms are so incredibly vague and people who have certain symptoms doesn't mean they have pancreatic cancer. but certainly a jaundice or yellowish color of your eyes or skin. nausea, abdominal or back pain but the risk factors, some under our control, smoking, obesity, diabetes, chronic pancreatitis and family history, certain genetic mutations. i want to do a deeper dive on that. we hear a lot about brca mutation with breast or ovarian

cancer, men carry that mutation too. it also increases the risk of pancreatic cancer so genetic mutations are a factor. >> alex is in a fighting spirit. what are the treatment options? >> the spirit is so important. we talk about that all the time. depends on the stage and type of pancreatic cancer because it's not one size fits all. surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation, research. funding is desperately needed so we can develop a good screening test for this type of cancer and the good news is that in this country there are over a thousand clinical trials right now for pancreatic cancer. people know someone or themselves they're battling pancreatic cancer you can go to clinicaltrials.gov, put in the state that you live in and see if you're eligible for a clinical trial. >> great info. thank you, doc. we're all pulling for alex for sure. we're going to turn now to the new text messages revealed in the case of that missing mom, kelsey berreth, who disappeared on thanksgiving. her fiance is now facing murder charges. abc's paula faris is here with the details, good morning,

paula. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. many of the details in these new court documents are simply too graphic and bothersome to share with you. but they do detail how investigators were able to piece together enough evidence to charge patrick frazee with kelsey berreth's disappearance. this morning, disturbing new details in the suspected killing of kelsey berreth. court documents including dozens of search warrants shedding new light on patrick frazee, who is accused of beating berreth to death on thanksgiving. the documents include text messages sent between berreth and frazee's phones. in one exchange frazee texts, are you okay? do you need anything or can i do anything? berreth's phone then replies, no, i'm fine, just worn out. >> patrick, tell me about krystal. >> reporter: but those and other exchanges are believed to have been sent after berreth was killed, apparently staged by frazee. another exchange from berreth's phone to frazee three days after authorities say the young mother died.

overnight, the detroit police department telling us they're trying to reach a woman who says she was victimized by the singer in 2001 when she was just 13 years old. >> is this camera on me? >> reporter: all of this in the aftermath of that explosive interview, kelly denying those ten counts of sexual misconduct and aggravated sexual abuse charges he was arrested for in february and for which he has pleaded not guilty. >> 30 years of my career and y'all trying to kill me. you're killing me, man. y'all just don't want to believe the truth. >> reporter: the 52-year-old has become a public pariah after allegations of inappropriate relationships with younger women including jocelyn savage and azriel clary. both now in their 20s. both women spoke with cbs news while the singer was present calling their parents liars after they publicly accused kelly of holing them captive. now, both the savage and clary

families say they never tried to sell their daughters to r. kelly as r. kelly stated in that interview. they're also calling r. kelly a serial liar. george. >> tom llamas, thanks very much. we'll go to that major new storm on the move. it's bringing heavy snow to some parts of the country and severe flash flooding in the west and ginger is tracking it all. >> i have an image that looks more like it's out of the plains but, no, that's santa barbara, california, a time lapse of that storm coming at you and all the lightning that came with it and came with a lot of rain. you've had two, 4 inches near the san francisco bay area and tuolumne showing that water crossing roads, even in utah cutting them off at snow canyon state park. this storm is now headed across the rockies tomorrow and it'll settle in for the weekend with the northern plains right into the great lakes getting snow. but it's this part, this yellow area that is highlighted already. arkansas, mississippi, western

[ applause ] a health alert on keto diets. a new study found those on a low-carb regimen are significantly more likely to develop a health rhythm disorder. pretty groundbreaking? >> attention grabbing headline and first the caveat. this is a classic example of what we talk about all the time, association not cause and effect but this study looked at almost 14,000 people, followed them for an average of 22 years then had them fill out a food questionnaire about what they homaedeart n followed them for l ythm verymon fibrillation and what they found the people on

the low carb diets were 18% more likely to develop afib than those on a moderate carb diet. interestingly, a lot of data has shown what tree call a u-shaped mortality curve to low carb diets meaning people who eat very, very low carb and people who eat very, very high carb have higher risks of death. >> describe low carb. >> that's the interesting thing. two things i want to do a deeper dive on. low carb for this was less than 44% of your daily calorie intake from carbohydrates which is not that low. that's almost half our calories coming from carbs. but when we talk about atrial fibrillation, what i want people to understand, you hear about it, see commercials about it, if you look at the anatomy of the heart, the upper two chambers get dilated and beat irregularly and then they get filled with blood. a blood clot can form there and that can become dislodged then cause a stroke. ssiation ande-f,gege, becse wboa
