pierre thomas has more. >> reporter: the president's former campaign chairman, paul ofecades in prison, sentenced to four years. he begged the judge for compassion, adding to say i have been humiliated and ashamed would be a gross understatement. he faced 19-24 years behind bars. the judge called the guidelines excessive saying the convictions of the host of crimes including bank and tax fraud. manafort lived an otherwise blameless life. he called the political strategist a generous person. still, the judge said he was surprised manafort did not express regret. >> paul manafort has done an amazing job. he's here someplace. where is paul? paul manafort. >> reporter: he ran the president's campaign during a crucial period in 2016 faced the most prison time of anyone charged by special counsel,

trump organization for nearly $4 million for breach of contract saying the company broke the promise to pay its legal bills. the president will visit eastern alabama to get a look at the devastation from the tornado. a federal disaster team is on the ground in lee county. volunteers are still clearing debris from the ef-4 tornado that left 23 people dead. funeral services began yesterday. meanwhile, more severe weather is expected in the area this weekend. a man accused of shooting a sheriff's deputy and wounding a woman at an illinois hotel is in custody. floyd brown is suspected of opening fire at that hotel when a fugitive task force tried to serve an arrest warrant. he jumped out of a third floor window, fled 170 miles and crashed the vehicle along the highway and barricaded himself inside. hours later, authorities used flash grenades to stun him before taking him into custody. the sheriff deputy was killed in the hotel gunfire. he's a 13-year veteran who leaves behind a wife and two

children. a procession of police vehicles escorted his body from the hospital to the coroner's office last night. the suspect is charged with first degree murder. an accused murderer on the fbi's ten most wanted list is in custody after years on the run. police in maryland arrested lamont stephenson who stabbed his girlfriend and her cat to death in washington on wednesday. he was a fugitive from new jersey in 2014, charges with eerily similar situation. now to colorado where they received so much snow this winter officials are warning about the threat of severe avalanches. there's more heavy snow expected in the rockies today. >> avalanche is expected until mid-morning. kayna whitworth has more. >> reporter: that winter storm bringing dangerous avalanches to the colorado rockies. late reports of vehicles trapped

come to your tv and check out this video from a south african highway. that is a man spotted surfing on a back of a truck in a wheelchair. reports say it happened at 50 miles per hour. the person who shot the video says it happened on a road with an incline, so the man may have needed some help. you can see how dangerous that is, obviously. some twitter users think they saw the same man doing the same thing the day before. if that's how he gets around and is safe, by all means. a teenage girl is being called a hero after she helped rescue a man bound and kidnapped inside a car trunk for some 12 hours. >> kayla rose was walking her dog when she heard screams coming from the trunk of a car parked in a suburban new jersey neighborhood. the victim said two men grabbed him and forced him to take out cash at several atms before tossing him in the trunk of the car. >> i heard knocking and

scratching on the trunk of the car. i backed up because i was scared. then i heard it again. i said, hello. he said hello, can anybody help me? >> she quickly went to her neighbors across the street and called police. authorities managed to open the car and pull out the young victim. he was said to be between 18 and 20 years old. police continue to look for the alleged armed men. >> the victim says he was kidnapped, carjacked around 7:30 wednesday night. kayla was walking her dog around 7:00 a.m. thursday morning before school when she inadvertently becomes this hero, helping a guy in the back of a trunk. can you imagine? >> i love that her dog was named milk shake. we should mention that because milkshake was part of this. we are hearing from a school bus driver who became a hero as she saved the life of a choking child. >> the frightening moments
