157 people in ethiopia. it all happened just minutes after takeoff. just moments ago, investigators found both of the crucial black boxes. >> here's what we know right now. those 157 people on board were from 35 different countries, 8 of them from america. the plane lost contact just 6 minutes after takeoff, crashing and killing everyone on board. >> it was the same brand-new plane that crashed in indonesia in october. ntsb and faa are now assisting in that investigation. >> and airlines around the world are grounding that boeing jet, 100 in china alone. our senior transportation correspondent david kerley joins us. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, george. finding those black boxes is a big breakthrough, but some countries are not waiting to find out what is on those black boxes. thatry ground iing those boeing 737 this morning.

this morning, the deadly mystery in ethiopia. a scene littered with airline napkins and safety cards. this second crash of a new 737 leading to a grounding of jetliners around the world. china ordering that the country's fleet of nearly 100 max 8 jets not fly until more is known about why the 157 people died, including 8 americans. the ethiopian airlines ceo visiting the site. his airline grounding its other four max 8s. >> we're very, very saddened. our heart is broken. >> reporter: now the breakthrough. the black boxes being recovered. the flight to nairobi was troubled from takeoff. the pilots apparently struggling with control issues. calling the tower, saying they were having difficulties and wanted to return to the airport. >> what would cause that? maybe a

ma som a problem thhe airplane inteally. >> reporter: just six minutes after takeoff, the data stops and the jet crashes. immediately, if there is an issue with this new aircraft. the first crash, a lion air max 8 going down in indonesia when the pilots failed to disengage the autopilot when bad data engaged a nose-down dive. >> here, we don't know what we've got for sure. it doesn't appear to be something directly related to pilot action. >> reporter: among those on board, cedric asiavugwa. a georgetown university student on the way home to nairobi. and humanitarian and aid workers. in a statement, boeing says in part that safety is its number one priority, adding that the investigation is in its early stages. when asked about the groundings, boeing said it's does not have

any basis to issue new guidance to airplanes. when asked about the groundings, boeing said it's too early for it to issue any further guidance to the airlines. a lot to learn from those black bocks. >> david, thank you. let's bring in abc news contributor, former marine fighter pilot and aviation expert colonel steve ganyard. colonel, good morning to you. just six minutes after takeoff, the data stops. what does that tell you about what might have happened here? >> cecilia, there are good reasons why the data may have stopped. what we know up to the four-minute mark, this airline was out of control after it left the ground. the plane's climbing, descending, never getting high off the ground.

the crew is clearly distracted, because the air speed keeps increasing. we lose data about the four-minute mark. in the video this morning, you see the very deep scar. that impact angle that suggests that the airplane hit at a very steep angle and a high rate of speed. >> the similarities between what we're seeing right there on the screen and between the lion airlines crash back in october are pretty remarkable. is this just coincidence? or should there be now new safety concerns for this new boeing 737 max 8? >> the lion air crash started when there was a problem with the autopilot. it should have been handled by the pilots, it was not. the question, were there similar circumstances that led to a ying pubc rit to s a quti t ask. are there similarities? are there problems with this airplane? i don't think there is. but we'll get the black boxes read quickly and we'll find out

whether this is an airplane problem or a problem for pilot control. >> we're seeing a number of international carriers grounding this specific plane. so far, american carriers are continuing to express confidence. should these planes be grounded? >> there is no evidence right now, cecilia, to ground these airplanes. again, getting to the black boxes, finding out if there is something about a problem with this airplane. i think in talking to friends who are pilots at both american and united, u.s. carriers are not seeing any problems, any anomalies with this airplane. i think ultimately the airplane will be cleared. but we need to find out what caused this mishap and make sure it never happens again. >> all right, steve ganyard, thank you. janai? now to that dangerous storm bringing multiple tornadoes to the south and heavy snow out west. the snow so heavy it collapsed roofs. >> another ten inches in fargo. they've seen five feet so far this winter. the snow blowers are out there.

they have been below freezing since january 7th. one of nearly a dozen tornadoes in spring hill, louisiana. this one, an ef-1. tearing off the roof of that house. a chaotic weekend. throughout the midwest, another brutal beating of winter causing roofs to cave under the heavy snow. in minnesota, this roof crashing down on a catholic church. at and this wisconsin fire department, this roof crashing down on fire trucks. parts of minnesota getting over a foot of snow, making for dangerous conditions on the roads. over 170 crashes reported across the state. and in the south -- >> it's coming right at us. >> reporter: watch as this ef-1 tornado tears across a parking lot in louisiana. 105-mile-per-hour winds ripping the roof right off this building. >> let's go in. >> reporter: this, just 1 of 11 reported tornadoes. >> debris right here. coming right at us. >> reporter: those twisters

leaving some southern towns in shambles. >> by the time they said take cover, it came through, did a lot of damage. >> reporter: this massive tree through a home. luckily, no one hurt. this is not snow. this is hail falling yesterday in san jose, accumulating on the roadways. stopping drivers in their tracks. this thing swings through the southwest today, tuesday, wednesday. george, over to you. shgthererede ng to g wto trump is forisorthe pridt will s ng the stakes after the longest government shutdown ever with a new request of nearly $9 billion for the wall. our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce on capitol hill with the latest. mary, it didn't take democrats long to say, dead on arrival. >> reporter: yeah, george, here we go again. the president is now requesting another $8.6 billion to build the wall. that is six times that he got

after the last fight. it tells you about the president's priorities. president trump's making very clear to his conservative base he's not giving up on this fight. even after he didn't get a single extra dollar in the shutdown fight. democrats are also making it clear they're still not budging on this issue. saying history will repeat itself if the president tries to take on this fight once again. warning him, quote, we hope he learned his lesson. >> mary, the white house working hard to stem republican defections on that. >> reporter: george, the white house this morning is clearly worried about this. they're trying to contain the number of republicans who deliver what will be a rebuke to the president. in the senate right now there are enough republicans on board to block the president's national emergency declaration. the question this morning is, how big is that margin? how many republicans will stand up to the president on this issue? president trump has said he'll veto this. his critics in congress to overturn the veto.

they can embarrass the president on this, but not likely to stop him on this. >> thank you, mary. cecilia? the exclusive with the attorney who negotiated the hush money payments for stormy daniels and karen mcdougal over their alleged affairs with donald trump. he sat down to talk with our tom llamas. good morning, tom. >> reporter: house investigators now want to speak with this attorney. this, after he already spent 15 hours with federal prosecutors who were investigating michael cohen and the president. he says initially michael cohen missed a payment to pay off stormy daniels. he made the payment after the "access hollywood" tape. creating a world of trouble for the president. >> it was supposed to be the easiest deal in the history of man. >> reporter: that's keith davidson. the man who just before the presidential election negotiated the hush money deals on behalf of both stormy daniels and karen mcdougal for their affairs with donald trump. for months, he dealt with

the president's fixer at the time, michael cohen. you built a relationship with michael cohen. a confidant at times? >> i think in a very large sense, yes. >> you wanted to work in the white house? >> no, sir. >> you didn't get brought to the dance. >> i didn't want to go to the white house. >> reporter: davidson says that right after the election, cohen was certain he was in line for top positions. including attorney general or chief of staff. and he became irate at inauguration time when he learned there were no prospects. >> congratulations, mr. president. >> he confided in me that he was just beside himself and in his words, he said, can you [ bleep ] believe it? i just can't [ bleep ] believe it. can you been [ bleep ] believe after everything i have done? he's not taking me to washington? he felt that it was a personal embarrassment for him. he was -- um -- rejected. >> reporter: after all,

everything done also included that $130,000 payment to stormy daniels days before the election. and now, for the first time, davidson is revealing what he thinks forced cohen and trump to pay up. >> hello, how are you? >> the "access hollywood" tape was the motivating factor that made this happen. it defeats the argument that this was done for purely personal reasons and that this was, in fact, done for political reason. after the "access hollywood" tape that something like this could be the straw that broke the camel's back. >> do you think if stormy daniels and karen mcdougal was silent with hush payments? >> i have no idea. >> i have no idea. >> reporter: have you thought about it? has it kept you up at night? >> a little bit. yes. >> reporter: both women retained new attorneys and claimed davidson colluded with cohen in the hush money deals. but davidson tells us that's

>> reporter: but this morning, new claims against the singer after a pennsylvania man says he discovered at his home what he says is a vhs tape of kelly engaging in sexually abusive acts with more than one underage girl. he says he has no idea how the tape came into his possession. >> we decided that the right thing to do was turn it over to law enforcement. >> reporter: prosecutors aren't commenting. his attorney, gloria allred, said though it appears to be kelly in the video, she couldn't say with 100% certainty that it is. kelry -- kelly's attorney telling abc news that the doubt is self-evident with the reporting that the man on the tape kinda, sorta looks like r. kelly, that doesn't make it him. it is not him. kelly is charged with ten colea. he's due back in court on those charges march 22nd. now to a lesson on what not to do at the zoo.

here with more. good morning, adrienne. >> reporter: these players are among arguably the most famous players on the planet. they've taken their fight to the next level. >> that's it. game over. the job is over! the u.s. wins the 2015 women's world cup! >> reporter: they're world champions. >> alex morgan, she breaks free! >> i'm faster. i'm stronger. >> i'm not what i was when i was 30. i'm better. >> reporter: but this morning, 28 members of the u.s. women's soccer team, including superstars alex morgan, megan in arguing that in a newly filed lawsuit that they have been consistently paid less than eim when outpeormi them on the glob. >> the gold has gone to the united states of america. >> reporter: according to the lawsuit, if each team played and won 20 nontournament games a year, female players would earn a maximum of $99,000.

while similarly ranked male players would earn an average of more than $260,000. the lawsuit also highlights pay discrepancy at the world cup. alleging that the pay was so skewed that when the men's team lost in round 16 of the world cup in 2014, they received bonuses totalling more than $5 million. the following year, when the women won it all, they received less than $2 million. and overnight, u.s. soccer released a statement pointing out that the women's national team reached a collective bargaining agreement with the organization two years ago. adding, u.s. soccer has faithfully and consistently worked with the u.s. women's national team players and staff to provide the team everything it needs. and u.s. soccer adds that their commitment to women includes creating two elite international tournaments and adding additional staff focused only on the u.s. women's national team. in the statement, the organization says they look forward to enriching the women's game today and into the future.

>> let's get right to it. joining us now from paris are superstars megan rapinoe and alex morgan. good morning to you both, ladies. we saw those numbers in adrienne's piece just now. you say men can make more than double what you earn in a year despite you doing the same job. but this is more than just about pay equity. what other inequities are you talking about, megan? >> um, i think it is much more about pay equity. i think obviously, that is the hot button issue. but in order to have, i think, a fair and balanced conversation around compensation, we need to look at everything. we need to look at the way the youth teams are funded. we need to look at the way our staff, our coaching staff, our medical staff is funded. we need to look at promotion and branding and marketing and sponsorship. all of that. until we do, until we have equity and equality of the men's and women's team on both sides, we can't say, oh, the men make this, the women make this. we don't feel like we're funded equally from top to bottom. and that's really what we're fighting for. sort of a holistic approach to both programs.

for the federation. >> alex, what do you say to the people who might suggest the men bring in more revenue overall and they deserve to be paid more? >> well, i think one of the biggest problems, as megan just pointed out, was the investment is not there from the ground up. i think it's unfair to come to that conclusion without equal amount of investment among the youth through all three senior national teams. i also think that we also have -- created a lot of revenue for u.s. soccer throughout the years. and, you even saw from 2015, we had the most watched u.s. soccer game in history. with the women's world cup final. so, i think that those -- claims are really arbitrary. >> you have both said that this is not just about soccer and women on the field. excuse me, that this is about standing up for -- for all people, particularly young girls. what is the big picture here?

>> i think the big picture ultimately is just giving that message that -- you should fight for what you believe in. you should fight for what you feel you earned and never give up. it is difficult at times. sometimes it feels like, um, a david and goliath type situation. where you maybe have less resources or less experience. but we know in our hearts. and we know with the facts that we have that -- we're on the right side of this. i think just looking sort of at the broader picture, i don't think anybody can argue that there's gender inequities in the world. that there's a pay gap. that there's discrepancies. for us, it's not only about leaving our sport in a better place, for the young girls that will come after, but just in general inspiring women around the world to stand up for what they believe in. they have an ally with us. we are with them.

we support them. we'll continue to fight. >> if i could add to that, the men have also come out and said that, they are in support of us, as well, and so we respect them so much for that. it's great to see that support from them, from a lot of our sponsors, as well. from women all around the world. both inside and outside of the sport. you know that you're doing something right when you gained that support from people around you to help lift you up. >> one of the really big questions this morning for you both is the world cup. it's just three months away. if this is not resolved, no expectation that it will be by then, will you boycott? >> i don't think it's ever been in our minds to step off the field. >> no. >> you know, it's always, we have been looking forward to the world cup for three years now. even dating back to the collective bargaining agreement two years ago, we felt like what our goal was was equal pay at that point. what we got to without being locked out or striking was the agreement that we made two years ago. it's -- it was progress.

january. by these two men seen in this security video. police tracking down the two brothers. their account creating a seismic shift in the investigation. >> it's not the chicago police saying he did something. it's the evidence. the facts. and the witnesses that are saying this. >> reporter: ola and abel osundairo seen here apparently buying supplies for the attack, telling authorities smollett paid them to stage the whole thing. abc news obtaining a copy of the $3500 check investigators say was written by smollett. on the memo line, five-week nutrition workout program. smollett's attorney mark geragos appearing on cnn friday night. >> what do they say they have that corroborates the story? these are the two people who did it. what do they have besides their word that says he was in on it? >> reporter: and the penalty for the newest set of charges ranges from probation to up to three years in prison and/or a $25,000 fine.

he's not yet entered a plea on these new charges. he is due back in court next thursday on that original george. >> okay, eva. now here a morning exclusive. the attorney for the brothers who told police they helped smollett stage the attack. what do the brothers have to back up their story? >> what i can tell you right now is the tremendous regret that they have over their involvement in the situation. and i think once -- mark geragos and everyone else starts looking into this situation, they're going to see really that my clients were just taken advantage of someone that they trusted. >> but do they have evidence to back up their claims? >> do my clients have evidence? of course. of course. and that's why, um, when they went from persons of interest to suspects, they are free men and they are at home. >> how did this all happen? how did they get caught up in this in the first place? >> you know, i ask myself the same question.

i really look at the dynamic between loyalty and someone in a position of trust with my clients. who really just took advantage of them. >> they had worked with jussie on "empire"? >> they worked with him. they've known him. they were friends with this was someone who the brothers thought could help their career. obviously, mr. smollett has connections. he had a good position with fox. so this was someone that they had trusted to -- you know, consider their best interests. >> and they were paid to do this, correct? >> they were paid for the training. they were training together. and so they were paid for that. but they were also asked to -- to do this favor for him, unbeknownst to them, because this later turned out to be a big betrayal. >> we just showed the check. they were paid $3500. it said for perm training. you're not disputing that. they were paid for the training.

cases of a dangerous strain are spiking. dr. jen ashton with us to talk about it. >> the late enumber. 32 states across the country are reporting high flu-like activity. the cdc are now estimating as many as 26 million cases of the flu this season. just under an estimated 350,000 hospitalizations and an estimated 30,000-must death. we haven't heard a lot of it this season. ever year the number change. they separate it into what is causing that type of flu. there are different strain we hear about. the more common strain is the h 1-n 1rks. it's tip which i milder. that was the predominant strain. all the strains were in this vaccine this year. what we're seeing now is a different strain.

h3-n-2. that is trending it. it tends to give more acute, more severe, and potentially more deadly type of influenza. >> what can we do to protect our families? >> the good news. the cdc has not waivered and footer will i. the best defense is having a nation. there is data to suggest that if you get the flu after getting vaccinated, you might have aless severe course and less likely to have complications. i take this very, very seriously. i have had it several times. my daughter had it last month. and i have lost a pregnant patient to influenza. it's not just a bad cold. >> oh, my goodness. >> we need to keep vigilance up. the overall cases tend to be trending down. >> even now, the vaccination can help? >> yeah, all the way up to april. a personal message from justin bieber. asking fans for prayers and

for it. stop apologizing. you say in order to get there, you have to kick some old habits first. were you a soccer player? >> i was. i'm so nervous right now to try and show off those skills on live tv. >> we're going to see if you can kick in heels. we're going to kick the old habits to the curb. we have soccer balls with some of your messages on it. up first is the i'm sorry ball. i believe in this so much. women apologize too much. >> the whole intention behind the book was, i wanted women to pursue a goal for their life, personally or professionally. in order to do that, you have to let go of those excuses that hold you back. one of the biggest excuses is, one, apologizing just like in life. someone bumps knew on the street and you're like, oh, i'm sorry. you're sorry for existing? or you apologize with the way you live your life. meaning, you want to pursue something. you want to build a business or

run a marathon. but your family doesn't support it. so you're constantly saying i'm sorry and not chasing down the dream. so -- >> here we go. >> right? i'm nervous. >> no pressure, no pressure. >> oh! but i did drop the mike pack. you know what, you guys, if you thought i wasn't going to be awkward, you don't know me very well. >> you're a pro. okay, in our world, we live with deadlines. >> yes. >> you can't avoid them. you say deadlines and goals don't mix. >> yeah, so i think this hurts you, right? so this is a thing that a lot of women have. i have to be a mom by this age, i need to make partner by this age, i need to do this with my career. if i had given my goals a deadline, i would have quit so long ago. i would not be an author. i would not have built the company i built. i want to encourage you, no matter what -- >> kick it. >> i know. >> yes. >> as long as you're pursuing a

goal, it doesn't matter when it happens. you become who you're meant to be on the way to your goal. just chase it down no matter how long it takes. >> you must hear from so many people. millions of different voices telling you -- the more successful you get, what you should do. what you should have done. how do you eliminate the noise? that's our next ball. outside opinions. >> so you have to know -- do you want to try and kick one? you know what? someone else's opinion. >> women's world cup. yep. >> someone else's opinion is none of yo b you have to be able to pursue who you are, the dreams of your heart, and be so strong in the conviction of what you want that someone else's talking doesn't even get an opinion here. it's like this, if you're not in the ring with me, if you're not taking the punches with me, if you're not running the miles with me, you don't get an opinion.

>> let's go for it. >> you got it. yes! >> they're cheering me in the control room. we have questions from our audience. the first one is from chelsea in denver. she sent us a video, so let's watch. >> hi, rachel. it's chelsea out here in denver, colorado. i'm a huge fan. and, i want to know, how has your life changed now that you have met your career goals? is it easier? >> um, no. i think i made this mistake a lot earlier in my career. maybe you did, too. you venll ea. i work ten times harder today than i ever have in my life. i just sit in a better seat on the plane. my grandma used to say, new levels, new devils. every time you get to a new level, you have something else to chase down and attack. but you are so much stronger and more capable of that because you walked the road to get to here. >> i love that. you just sit in a better seat on the plane. whitney from north carolina is here in the audience. you've got a question. >> i'm a working mom raising three daughters.

>> awesome. >> how do you get rid of feeling the mom guilt and encourage your children to go after what they want to do? >> yes, okay, whitney, thank you so much. you guys, i hate mommy guilt. i hate this topic. here's the thing. mommy guilt is very rarely about how you feel about being a mother. it's usually what you think other moms think of how you're mothering your children. i believe in my heart that god gave you those babies for a reason. you were meant to be their mama. you're going to show them how to live life by you living life full out without apology. the best way to teach your children is by example. and if you pursue your goals and if you do this work which is such a blessing and you do it with shame, they're going to learn that from you too. you gotta own it. you got to be powerful and you got to show them what it looks like. these three beautiful daughters, this is what it's like to be a woman who's unapologetic about who she is.

>> i love that. marissa, you have a question. >> i'm looking ahead to when i enter the workforce. i'm nervous as far as being seen as having enough experience when i'm applying for my dream job. i wondered if you had advice on coming across as having the experience, especially like during the interview process. >> here's the thing. all love in my heart. you're not going to be able to get your dream job right out of college. i think that social media kind of messes us up. it makes us think we're supposed to have everything now. what you're looking at -- my career, this is 15 years of work to get to this place. [ applause ] so what you've gotta do -- what you've gotta do is go into that interview and be hungry. show up on the first day and do your work. you would be shocked how hard it is to find people who are just ready to work and want to learn. you're going to get the dream job. but you've got to probably get the coffee and make copies and do the grunt work and answer phones. that's how you'll get the skills you need to get to the place you want to go. >> rachel hollis. thank you
