dived, victims including 85 americans. the flight was clear when it took off at 8:30 a.m. sunday morning, but there was trouble from takeoff. the pilot radioing the power saying he was struggling to control the plane. asking to return to the airline. then just six minutes into its journey to nairobi at 8:44 a.m. the jet disappeared from radar. witnesses describing smoke coming from the rear of the plane before the crash. >> the only thing we know is right after takeoff the airplane was porpoising going up and down. >> reporter: this is the second of the max 8 aircraft. in october, the lion air crashed into the java sea also minutes after takeoff. in that crash, the pilots failed to disengage the auto pilot when bad data engaged a nose-down dive. there were no survivors. >> it's absolutely critical that the black boxes that were recovered were read immediately, so we can figure out if this was a problem with the airplane that affects the fleet worldwide.

>> reporter: among the dead, two brothers onvation. the ntsb is on site, looking for possible engine problems and looking at pilot history as well. the ethiopians remain the lead investigative body. what's remarkable about this crash site is how compact it is. that's because the plane came in as such a steep angle so fast that many of its parts remain buried underground. >> our thanks, to matt there. and in the u.s., of course, southwest and american both have several dozens of those 737 max 8s. >> several senators are calling for those planes to be grounded during the investigation. so far, the faa has not done that. abc's david curly explains why. >> reporter: while some airplanes are grounding their max 8s after the ethiopia crash. the faa says there is no reason to ground the fleet here in the united states. it says it has no evidence that would justify doing that.

this ss some passengers are calling airlines and asking whether they are on a 737 max 8 for a flight and whether they can change aircraft. southwest says it has fielded some calls from passengers but has not seen a significant increase in cancellations. we have also just learned that the two black boxes, which have been discovered, have not been read out by the ethiopians yet. the ethiopians have not decided whether they will ask for assistance. i'm david curly in washington. if you have a flight on a max 8, you can reach out to the airlines to see if they will accommodate you. some say if you reach out, they will try. they are not waiving fees. >> a lot want to know what they can do. . moving on. more on impeaching president trump. it comes from a top source.
