pay off. if you're rich you get in, if you are not, you don't. hard truth for them to swallow. >> did the students say anything about the other students in the cheating scandal? >> reporter: number of them expressed empathy for the students caught up in the scandal, saying if they didn't know about it, if it was just their parents orchestrating it, they were concerned about them getting kicked out and how this might follow or haunt them launching their careers. there was concern for the students caught in this. >> what did the students want changed? there's no transparency in the process. kids send in applications, schools say yea or nay, you can appeal but not a lot of reasons for why you didn't get in. >> reporter: kids i talked to dialled it back to high school, saying we set impossible, unrealistic standards to get

do we change? >> decluttering can help? >> not everybody but lot of people, inner calm and possibility, friend said i cleaned out my fridge, now i know i can switch careers. i know how that feels. >> because getting rid of the extraneous stuff in lime. >> clogs you, makes you feel weighed down. when i get control over the stuff, i feel more in control of life in general, even if it's illusion, it's helpful illusion. >> taking off this thing, maria kondo. but we know when day care sends me every art project my daughter does, how do i get rid of it? >> good rule is do you love it?

need it? use it? some things come home but then there's self-portrait or autobiography, that i have to keep. looking at things coming in, does it rise to the level of something i want to keep? >> also one of the things you discussed is not making more work for yourself. example would be all these boxes to put in the garage, label them. but if you know where the christmas stuff is, why label? i'm going to forget. >> good to label and make it useful but sometimes we fall into the trap of make work and fake work. lot of people attracted to binders, want to put everything in one. but if you get rid of what you don't need, maybe don't need a binder. maybe don't need to shred a lesson plan if you're a teacher. people alphabetize their spices. some people that works.

others don't, why do it if it's not going to last? >> lasts a second, then shoving stuff around. >> put cinnamon in front. >> what you use most. clutter bind, do people thrive? >> they don't see it. doesn't drain or overwhelm them, just don't see it. living or working with someone like that if you're not clutter blind can be puzzling, why are they so inconsiderate about keeping things orderly but for some people doesn't register, takes conscious effort to even close a kitchen cabinet door because blind to it. >> doesn't matter to them. >> if you're someone like that, don't worry about it unless it matters to someone else. there's no magic answer or reason to make your bed unless it makes you happy, healthy,

more productive and creative. most people say it does make them feel better, others it doesn't. fine, no reason to do it. >> just creating more work. >> and some people are i love not making bed every day, i'm grown-up, can do what i want. great, don't. >> like that. how does decision fatigue play into this? >> what we've been talking about, what do you keep, discard, if you're giving it away, do you recycle it, all decisions that take something out of us. but if you do it up front, save decisions going forward. clean out closet now, you have to face decisions but every day getting dressed for work everything fits, looks good, something you want to wear, not making micro decisions and exhausting yourself every day. >> all wonderful advice.

>> so often when you're dealing with a corporation, send in all the documents and they'll ask you three or four more times for exact same documents. that alone is reason to hold on to everything, isn't it? >> wonderful reason. one of the reasons i wrote the book. there's a few books in the space, here's what to do if somebody dies but this is more what to do if you're living. applying for bank loan and you have to find retirement statements and checking account statements, pull out get ready binder and documents or evacuation, set to go. >> any documents you don't need? >> anything that's outlived usefulness. tax returns after six years, don't need them because irs can't audit you, may make you feel good to have them, not bad idea to keep them.

>> i thought it was after three. >> three years for regular purposes, additional three years for fraud. >> in case you're accused of fraud, you have the paperwork. >> exactly. >> is there anything that everybody keeps anz nobody needs? >> i would say you have two types of people, those who keep everything and those who don't keep anything. >> thus a space to put your book together. ever any people who do it right? >> i would say that's a great question, i think that people do it in the way they know how to do it. most of us aren't educated in financial literacy. don't learn these things in school. all learn it on the fly. so what i tried to put together is get ready system. helps people set goals, get educated and learn about making
