bond today after appearing in federal court in los angeles. she and her husband massimo gianulli are among the 33 parents charged in this scheme. ? 13 of them live in the bay area. one couple is manuel and elizabeth enriquez. manuel enriquez will be replaced as ceo of palo alto's hercules capital. hercules says he'll still a seat on the board and be an adviser. >> and ucla says it may kick out any enrolled students who benefited from bribes. usc says anyone in the current admissions cycle connected to the scandal will be denied admission. it will undertake a case-by-case review for current students. >> also, abc news reporting several prep schools in southern california have been subpoenaed as part of this investigation. abc 7 news has also confirmed that at least one bay area high school received a subpoena. >> abc 7 news education reporter lyanne menld sez in the newsroom with more on how high school counselors, lyanne, are responding to this scandal. >> reporter: well, why the subpoenas, dan? we are told that they are now

looking for more records not related with the schools but related with some of the families involved in this alleged scheme. as for high school counselors, we know that it's nearly impossible to fact check everyone. we now know that notre dame high school in belmont is one of the schools that has been subpoenaed. that doesn't mean that the school was involved in any way in the admissions scam. marianne osmond is the head of notre dame high school. she spoke to us exclusively after it was known that a former student allegedly cheated on the s.a.t. >> and at the time that she took her tests we had no idea that there was any possibility of any cheating that would be going on. that the s.a.t. test-taking process is grofrnd by the college board. >> reporter: both the students' parents, elizabeth and manuel enriquez of atherton were charged with cheating on their two daughters' college entrance exams in four separate occasions. the first in 2015 when they paid $25,000 to have someone proctor

their older daughter's s.a.t. exam and correct her answers. they are also accused of bribing the head tennis coach at georgetown university to designate their older daughter as a tennis recruit in order to facilitate her admission to georgetown. in the case of actress lori loughlin and her husband massimo gianulli the guidance counselor in the l.a. private high school where their daughters attended inquired about one of the sisters' athletic recruitment to usc. in the complaint the counselor did not believe that either of the gianullis' daughters participated in crew and was concerned that their applications may have contained misleading information. aaron billy is with test magic, a learning center in san francisco. he says the reality is there is little or no kind of fact checking going on. >> they'll say that they are overwhelmed with the number of students that they have to work

with. they barely get a chance to meet with them throughout the school year, much less check their applications. > reporter: here's something you may or may not know. many of these elite high schools are under great pressure to get their students into the ivy leagues and other top colleges. you can say it's a selling point for them. >> the students from those schools have a better chance of actually getting into the more prestigious colleges. so yes, it's important. >> reporter: and this comes at a time when so many students and their parents are waiting to hear this month, in a few days, in a few weeks from some of these colleges. and definitely it's a conversation we must all have, perhaps at the dinner table tonight. in the newsroom lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. >> good place for it. >> thank you, lyanne. well, this evening we are hearing from the lawyer for the stanford sailing coach who's admitted to taking bribes in the cheating scandal. >> john vandmore's attorney says his client is taking responsibility for his actions and admits what he did was wrong and if he had a do-over he certainly would not do it again.

>> the statement continued, "john is very remorseful for the damage caused to stanford, the students, staff, and the alumni. chris nguyen has more on the hurdles universities face when it comes to vetting students' applications. >> reporter: the bay area has somewhat become the epicenter of the college admissions bribery scandal. stanford university wrapped up in the mess after its sailing coach pleaded guilty to racketeering for allegedly vouching for a number of sham recruits in exchange for money. >> kids are all about getting the test scores, doing the right activities to impress. >> reporter: she served as deafen admissions and was stunned and saddened by the revelations but with so many given applications every year there's just not enough manpower to fact check every applicant. >> you you don't lie, cheat and steal to get into college. you work hard, you try your best. sometimes things go your way, sometime they don't. >> reporter: "the new york times" best-selling author wrote an anti-helicopter parenting

manifesto called how to raise an adult. she hopes this serves as a wake-up call. >> childhood has become this utilitarian pursuit of childhood admission instead of a joyful time in the life of a young human figure out what they want out of life. >> reporter: a valuable reminder when it's needed most. in palo alto chris nguyen, nbc 7 news. coming up in our next half hour, we hear from students and local colleges and get their reaction to this scandal. they'll tell you how they feel after getting into college the legal way. now to a developing story. we should learn more details tomorrow about the murder of this san jose woman two weeks ago. the man accused of killing her, an undocumented immigrant from el salvador, will appear in court for arraignment. >> and tonight the question is would she still be alive if santa clara county honored earlier i.c.e. requests to detain the suspect? abc 7 news reporter david lui is live at the county courthouse in san jose with the story.

david? >> reporter: dan and ama, the 24 quaerld suspect will appear in a court here at the hall of justice tomorrow afternoon for arraignme arraignment. he is undocumented. in fact, ice deported him from the u.s. six years ago but he re-entered the u.s. and is tied to a string of several crimes here in san jose now including that murder. i.c.e. says it has asked santa clara county six times, no make that seven times as of today, to detain 24-year-old carlos ar vado carranza. that's over a three-year time span. he's the suspect in jail arrested in connection with the brutal murder would weeks ago of 59-year-old bambi larsen in a quiet upscale san jose neighborhood. those who oppose the count y's policy to avoid i.c.e. requests say carranza appears to have an extensive history of crime. >> there's never been a court anywhere in this country that has deemed tun constitutional for the county to pick up the phone to call the federal authorities when they've god a predatory felon who's about to be released into a community.

>> reporter: mayor liccardo is a former prosecutor and wrote a letter to the county four years ago asking to change the policy. instead, supervisor dave cortese says it's i.c.e. that has not done its job. in the case of violent felons santa clara does cooperate with i.c.e., "with complete real-time computer data on who is in our custody and when they will be released. i.c.e. does not show up in a timely manner to avoid release in the community." police chief eddie garcia says his officers don't ask about immigration status in order to foster a closer relationship with immigrants. so they will not fear reporting crime. the immigrants rights group siren agrees. >> whether you're documented or undocumented you want to make sure that when you are a victim of a crime and when you are a witness of a crime that there aren't other consequence that's may result. >> reporter: carranza is homeless and is a known gang member. he was deported by i.c.e. from texas to his home country of el salvador but he was back in the u.s. the following year and arrested multiple times.

it's been nearly two weeks since authorities gave up looking for the body of a woman presumably killed in a san francisco landslide. but her family still hopes her body will be found. abc 7 news was in fort funston as the father of kyra sunshine scarlett placed flowers where his daughter fell during the february landslide. dave scarlet lives in advise alia but came to san francisco to provide u.s. park service police with a dna sample. it will be used to identify his daughter when her body is recovered. >> pretty much come to the understanding that her body did watch out to see the first day, the night of the 22nd when maybe as much as 2/3 of the sand actually washed back out. >> kyra and a friend were walking her dog when the hill collapsed suddenly. a family memorial was held in utah last weekend.

students at an east bay college took a stand following a racist incident today. abc 7 news was at diablo valley college in pleasant hill where students hay walkout this afternoon. one week ago racist graffiti including a drawing of a lynching was found on a bathroom stall. students say other hateful incidents have happened on campus. >> it affects not on the african-american community, the lgbtq community, the hispanic community and the middle eastern community. this is an ongoing theme for about three years now and we're tired of it. >> diablo valley college sent a message to students saying it strongly condemns the graffiti and is planning activities to discuss what happened and bring the campus together as a community. a new woman is taking over the helm of san francisco's fire department. mayor london breed announced today that jeanine nicholson, a 25-year veteran of the department, will be the next fire chief. she will be the city's first lgbt fire chief. nicholson is a breast cancer

if you're looking to pay a traffic ticket in santa clara county online, you're going to have to wait. santa clara county superior court has temporarily stopped online payments for traffic infractions and misdemeanors because of a glitch in the system. some online traffic tickets may be overcharging recipients while others could be overcharging

help with the family real estate business in southern california. a spokesperson for the alameda county d.a.'s office refused to comment. lim's final day with the d.a.'s office is april 5th. d.a. nancy o'malley has not named a replacement lead counsel for the ghost ship trial. jury selection is scheduled to start april 2nd. both defendants face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the 36 people who died in that fire in december of 2016. the man accused of killing a teenager that an oakland councilwoman considered to be a grandson has been convicted of murder. councilwoman linnette gibson bengtssmce mcelhaney helped raise torin hughes. he was killed when someone tried to rob him. today jurors convicted 22-year-old shehaim johnson of vallejo. another man who was allegedly the one who pulled the trigger is being tried separately. the councilwoman had attended every day of the trial since it began last month but has been absent this week because over

the weekend her son victor was shot and killed during a botched robbery in los angeles. the college admissions scandal we've been tracking since yesterday is striking a deep cord in college students, especially those working hard to get a foot in the door. >> abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkly is live at diablo valley college tonight with the story. leslie. >> reporter: i talked to a lot of students today. one in particular told me, "i work hard to be in college and it's like a slap in the working class's face that some rich families can just pay to get what they want." >> clearly hard work does not pay off. it's basically if you're rich or not. if you're rich you get in. if you're not you don't. >> reporter: maria rivera is an international studies major here at the cal state east bay campus in concord. she's proud her family is playing fair, even though they feel like the deck is stacked against them. >> i come from like a very low-income family. and i thought that was just wrong because it's like people

like me don't have the opportunity to go to those schools because if you don't get accepted -- >> it's insane how hard it is to get in this school. it's crazy. i'm shocked but i'm really happy the parents got caught. the mort fick aegs and just the humiliation they're going o'feel they're tainted with now, they truly deserve it. >> reporter: these nursing students say high school students are pressured to do the impossible, get top grades, be a star athlete, volunteer, and for many of them they also had to work. >> it's actually ridiculous to get into schools nowadays and it's almost impossible. so i can see why parents might feel the need to cheat. i think at the end of the day it ends on the system and their requirements are unrealistic. >> i know going to high school a bunch of people paid their way out of trouble and everything. and it just -- it diminishes the work that students in lower-income areas and minorities put in to get into top-notch schools. >> reporter: at dvc many students still hope to transfer to a uc campus you're maybe not

privileged, then you obviously have to work like ten times harder. >> some of us don't have as big of a start as other people. like we've got to start from the bottom. and if they're just cheating their way to get to the top, that's kind of cutting everybody in line. >> reporter: several students told me that they actually have some empathy for the students caught up in the cheating scandal, wondering where they'll go, what they'll do, if they're kicked out of their schools, and also wondering how this is going to haunt them down the road as they start careers. i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >> leslie, thank you. the man at the center of the scam is rick singer. he's pleaded guilty to money laundering, racketeering, and more. officials say parents paid him $25 million in bribes to guarantee their children's admission to elite schools. one sacramento woman has known singer for decades. kim perry says she was one of his first clients when she was a high school student in the '90s. perry says he seemed look a very

money. >> this is where the majority of us are at. we're not billionaires. we're not hollywood stars. this is the time of year when students are expecting decisions from the university they want to attend. fall is the time of year when those applicants for colleges and for loans really get going. and "consumer reports" says it's never too early to start planning for it. mary lou decay knew she didn't want toned up deep in debt from college loans. that's why she started to apply for scholarships. and her efforts worked out. she got enough funding to take her all the way through graduate school. >> i cried. i cried so hard. i was like this is everything i ever wanted. >> reporter: how likely is it you'll end up winning scholarship cash? fairly decent, actually. though less than 1% of students get scholarships that cover the entire cost of tuition and room and board, remember, every penny counts. almost half her family used scholarship for college, with scholarships and grants covering 35% of college costs.

after his youtube video had been taken down. maine resident kyle long was arrested sunday about two miles from google's mountain view headquarters. dashcam video from iowa shows an iowa state trooper talking with long while he was waiting to get his car towed out of a ditch two days earlier. >> businessman at google headquarters. >> where's all your luggage and stuff? >> this is it. >> the trooper said he felt something wasn't right when long began talking about how upset he was at google. authorities contacted mountain view police. long's wife says she was the one who actually deleted his video, which he described as rambling and bizarre. the fda is moving ahead with a plan designed to keep e-cigarettes away from teenagers by restricting stales of most flavored products in convenience stores and online. the new guidelines are the latest government effort to reverse what health officials call an epidemic of underaged vaping. federal law bans the sale of e-cigarettes to those under 18
