she claimed her $1.5 billion earnings. why did she wait so long to come forward? hear her side of the story on this friday, march 15th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good friday morning. thank you for joining us. we begin on a somber note. we want to get right to the breaking news, what new zealand's prime minister is today's attacks took place on men and a woman in custody in connection to the attacks. police are also saying they difused several imp ro vised explosive devices on cars after the shootings. >> as victims were brought to hospitals, police told people to stay away from any mosques in case of further violence. one man who is taking responsibility on social media, and he said even the most remote parts of the world are not free

of mass immigration. witnesses describe t scene. >> giving sermon. it was 1:42 and the guns started shooting. he was shooting it up. i don't know, i had not seen him because i just lie down under the bench and thinking that, oh, no, if i get up, i will get shot, so i just keeping my fingers crossed so i can be alive. i was the last guy to come out of the mosques after the shooting stopped. there were a lot of bodies. >> one of many witnesses there, and among those making a narrow escape from the attacks was the bangladesh cricket team, and they were on the bus, approaching one of the mosques when the shooting started. they fled the area on foot to the stadium where they were supposed to play tomorrow, and that match has been canceled. everyone on the team is fine.

the lockdown of schools in christchurch has been lifted, and the investigation at the two mosques just getting under way. >> joining us for more insight is abc news consultant and former fbi consultant, steve gomez. steve, from your experience in counterterrorism what does it looks like to you with what we know so far and how unusual is this for new zealand? >> well, this looks like a typical terrorism type operation, multiple suspects, pu multiple machine guns and they have explosive devices and they went into two locations and just started shooting people. it looks like it was targeting mosques and people. it's just a matter of what was their motive? it looks like it was targeting >> steve, as they are look into why the suspects may have done this, police said a person claiming responsibility claims to be an australian citizen, and obviously australian officials will be working with authorities there in new zealand.

what kind of cooperation will be happening between these two countries? >> i can tell you in new zealand and australia, they have quite a bit of counterterrorism expertise. i personally have attended a leadership in counterterrorism conference where there were a number of new zealanders and australians, and they do this every year, so they have the kind of capability and understanding of terrorism and counterterrorism operations. that's a good thing. they will work hand-in-hand with new zealanders with the australians and other government agencies from other countries to ensure the intelligence is going to the new zealanders who are conducting this investigation. i also want to know, i am understanding from the people i talked to, australia is active in their law enforcement operations as we speak. the individual did the manifesto and involved in the attack. >> i'm sure they are, steve. we see you are in los angeles there, a major city here in this country. other major cities across the nation are on high alert when it

comes to mosques, we understand. that would be typical in a situation like this, and here in the u.s., you would expect mosques to also be under alert. >> absolutely. the mosques will be on alert, and law enforcement in this country and all over the world, there will be those kind of notifications. i am sure they will beef up their security. this happened in new zealand. new zealand is probably one of the most peaceful places in the world and that might be part of what their motive was and what the statement was intended to be from the suspects that they could, you know, this type of violence could touch new zealand. we'll have to wait and see what the investigation bears out. >> steve, as you said there, describing new zealand as one of the most peaceful places on the planet, and quite contrary here in the u.s., and we have seen attacks like this time and time again and often in the cases here at home, there's usually one shooter. in this finding out they have at least four people, four potentialusaken into custo.

what does the investigation look like in that case when you are dealing with four potential suspects verses just one? >> when it's four suspects, it's a massive investigation. in their case it's going to be every law enforcement officer on deck to work the investigation. i mean, you are talking about four individuals. they have four -- almost four types of profiles they have to build on each individual and they have to look at all the associates and all of the family members and all of their locations, jobs, everything about each one of those suspects has to be investigated. people have to be interviewed. they have to figure out everything about that, and each of those individuals to try and build a full picture as to what they were doing leading up to the attack, why did they commit the attack, how did they get the weapons and were any other people supporting this attack? >> that many more avenues to have to investigate. >> steve, gomez, i know you are staying with us this morning. we are learning new details throughout the morning and throughout the late day there in

new zealand, so we appreciate you sticking around with us and thank you for your insight there. we will have more with you in the next half hour. steve gomez there in los angeles breaking overnight, what could be a new outbreak of violence in the middle east. israel's iron dome defense system was put to work this morning, intercepting rockets fired from gaza. >> that followed israeli air strikes on terror sites in gaza. it is controlled by a palestinian militant group from hamas. those israeli strikes were in response to a suspected hamas rocket attack on tel aviv. there are chilling new details about the doomed flight that went down in ethiopia. recordings revealed the pilot requested to return to the airport almost immediately, about three minutes after take off as the aircraft accelerated to abnormal speed. that's according to a report in "the new york times." >> that report says controllers observed the boeing 737 max jet oscillating up and down by hundreds of feet. also, the plane's black boxes are now in france for examination. abc's david kerley reports.

>> reporter: the data in this mangled flight recorder could solve the mystery, but extracting the data from those black boxes which is in paris will not start for another day. that left boeing 737 max aircraft being towed in tulsa to be parked, the jetliner grounded worldwide and hundreds of flights being canceled. the concern, says the faa, are similarities between the ethiopian crash and one less than five months ago, both jets right after take off, moving up and down erratically. in the first crash, lion air, a safety system to prevent a stall did play a role. this is a graph of the up and down movement of that lion air jet, experts zeroing in on a 20-second dip, and when compared to the ethiopian graph, another 20-second dip, and that similarity triggering the faa to ground the fleet. >> the graphs were similar on

half a million people, the scene of carnage at two mosques. the violence breaking out in traditional friday prayers sending people running for cover. >> some people had blood on their body, and some people were limping. that moment, i realized it was really serious. >> other witnesses say they saw bodies everywhere. video on new zealand television showed police taking a possible suspect into custody after ramming the person's car. across new zealand shock at the violence and resolve from the prime minister. >> there is no place in new zealand for such acts of extreme and unprecedented violence, which it is clear this act was. >> police in major cities here in the united states, including los angeles and san francisco say they are beefing up security around mosques out of an abundance of caution. >> let's bring in our expert, steve gomez. steve, you are in l.a. right now, a former fbi agent. we know it's early in this investigation but we have to get your preliminary thoughts on

this. >> you have four suspects. the most important thing is they identify those suspects and do a full investigation as fast as possible on each one of those suspects. they want to figure out what their relationship is with each other. who are the people connected to them? who helped them acquire those weapons, the explosive devices, and any money they needed in order to pull this thing off? how did they identify these two mosques to be their targets? there are a number of things they will be looking at, but they want to figure out if there are coconspirators to this attack because those people will be out there and they want to apprehend them as fast as possible. >> steve, even though the initial search into a potential motive is really just getting under way, we know facebook is involved in the investigation because one of the potential suspects may have live streamed part of the shooting. what does this say to authorities and how does it add to the investigation? >> it shows these suspects really wanted to glamourize and

show to the world what they were doing. unfortunately we are seeing this a lot more given the social media and the ability to stream live, but when you have suspects that are doing this, it's not just about committing the violent attack, it's about, you know, showing it to everybody while it's happening and, again, trying to get a lot of attention. unfortunately that's what some of these suspects wanting to commit violent acts are into. >> steve, let's expand on that with the attention here, with the anti-immigration manifesto, the fact this was live streamed and thankfully, facebook is pulling that video. we hope nobody shows what is really being described as horrific images, and what does that say to you about others can be inspired by this act of terror? >> you are definitely going to have people that are inspired, were inspired as they were watching this. law enforcement, not only are they going to take down the

video but then they are going to look at the video to try and figure out who are the people that are linking on that video. they will try and see if there's anybody supporting that kind of video,kind of posture and position these suspects took, because those could be other people inspired to go out and commit a similar-type of an attack. maybe they are espousing similar type of rhetoric and that could be cause for investigation wherever those people are in the world. >> steve, again, unfortunately here in the u.s., we are used to seeing images like this. in this case, what is different is these suspects, potential suspects are alive right now, in addition to the fact there are four of them. how big of a difference does that make when you have suspects alive and can tell you about their motive? >> first of all, it's great for the investigation because you are now going to get to talk to these suspects and hopefully they will speak to the investigators. you can find out why they did that. they are probably going want to talk and speak about why they committed this attack and their
