needs of residents both those with homes and those without. >> tonight people who live in their cars will have a new safe place to park and sleep. it's the parking lot of the williams chapel baptist church. >> this is the first of four safe parking sites scheduled to open at churches in the east bay. 5,600 people are homeless in alameda county, and more than half of them are living in oakland, according to the latest census. >> leslie brinkley joins us live to show what a difference this can make. >> reporter: this could make a big difference. now, there are the homeless living on the streets, and then there are the homeless living on the edge and managing to stay in their vehicles, and that's who's being targeted, five churches in oakland are basically opening up their parking lots to specifically college students and homeless families who are living out of their vehicles. now, there are going to be no drugs and alcohol tolerated in these parking lots. a lot of strict rules will be

enforced on checking in at night, checking out in the morning, but basically it provides for some of these people a safe place to park and get a night's sleep. >> this is my life. this is how i live temporarily. >> reporter: 36-year-old amanda has lived out of her car and mobile home for seven years. a legitimate place to park would be a slice of heaven. >> it's hard to get fresh water every single day so people can get clean and bathed every day. we have to watch out for police all the time. if churches are willing to do that, man, i'm willing to go if they let me. >> it's you and i that can say yes in my backyard, yes on my parking lot. >> reporter: williams cham el baptist church will be the first to open up ten spots to homeless college students living out of their cars. in april four more church parking lots will offer spaces at west side missional corinthians, mount zion, and pleasant grove baptist churches.

>> and they're going to be screening them and having them sign codes of conduct, so we hope that this site will be open within the week. >> we're sorry that the answer to the many living without homes in our community is, well, you can park here. >> reporter: but it's better than no place to park. five churches are offering up the parking space in the interfaith council of alameda county is organizing this outreach effort. money from the city and the county will fund a security guard, fresh water, and bathrooms overnight every day for 90-day stints. >> we will have a fund that will be applied to this program that will allow us to have minor repairs done to clients' cars. we will help them to expunge their parking tickets. >> that's a beautiful thing. >> reporter: anthony rodriguez is on the verge of having to live out of his 20-year-old mitsubishi. >> what message would you like to give people about the plight of people stuck with maybe having to live out of their

heard in policy committee in april. melanie, thanks. what do you think will help? our conversation about building a better bay area continues online with the #betterbayarea. we all live here, so we can all be part of making this a better place to live. dublin teachers could be on the picket line soon. they have voted to strike if they can't come to an agreement with the district. there is a mediation session scheduled for tomorrow, but we have seen several strikes by teachers already this year. in january los angeles saw its first walkout in 30 years. it ended after a week. teachers in denver went on strike for three days last month. most recently we saw teachers in oakland go on st.that lasted se. each time the demands have been similar. higher pay, smaller classes and more support staff. in the south bay, a busy highway has seen a 30% increase in crashes so far this year. more than 500 have happened on

live where you live, this is abc 7 news. police surround public transit after a gunman starts shooting on a tram in the netherlands. a suspect has been arrested, identified as a 37-year-old man from turkey named goman tanas. >> we know he has a criminal history, but it's not clear if he has ties to terrorism. elizabeth hur explains what happened. >> a deadly shooting on a tram sending police rushing to a scene of mass chaos. the gunshots ringing out monday morning in the city of utrecht 30 miles southeast of amsterdam in the netherlands. >> reporter: almost immediately authorities warning terror as a possible motive and urging the public to stay away from the area, which is in a muslim part of the town. the city's terrorism level raised to the highest level, and officials releasing this picture of their main suspect initially

tonight ethiopian officials say there are clear celerities between the ethiopian crash and a crash last year in in in in i >> reporter: grief stricken families let out cries of pain as 17 empty caskets were carried through the streets of the ethiopian capital, each representing a passenger of the ethiopian airlines flight that tragically crashed last week killing 157 people, the crash so violent mourners don't have bodies to bury. the march 10th crash raised questions about the safety of boeing 737 max 8 plane, the same model involved in the lion air crash off indonesia less than five months ago. according to the wall straet journal, the u.s. transportation department launched an inquiry into boeing's top selling jet. a grand jury issue add subpoena to at least one person involved in the jet's development seeking

mona ckosar. on oakland city leader has revealed plans for her son's memorial after he was murdered in los angeles. he died after being shot during a robbery near the university of southern california on march 10th. no arrests have been made. the victim is the son of oakland city council lynette gibson mcelhaney. a memorial service will follow on saturday at the auditorium at oakland's temple hill. apple has new ipads that will hit the market soon. the new ipad mini has a 7.9 inch screen and will come with an apple pencil and a processor that's three times faster than previous models. the ipad air has a bigger display, 10.5 inches and comes with a pencil and faster processor. it will replace the 10.5 inch ipad pro in apple's online store. the new tablets are the first refresh really for these ipad

a very special tree has gone up in san francisco's historic north beach neighborhood. the italian consul general and famed chef alex waters helped plant the tree near washington square. it honors san francisco poet and publisher lawrence ferengety. the bookstore became a hub for social activists in the 1960s. the olive tree was planted as part of san francisco's signature tree series, which honors important figures. some say it's a fitting tribute. >> it's a living and breathing monument, you know, blossoming every year. it's exactly what poetry is meant to be. >> what he said sounds like poetry. ferlin fwrks etti was not at the planting. he turns 100 on sunday. very nice. along the peninsula a difference of opinion has turned into more than just a dispute. >> it's now a lawsuit at the center of its famous flintstone

i'm not even sure how to say that batting average. it's under 100. the ten-time gold glover has plenty of arm strength to play in the outfield. a ten-time. cal and stanford women are going dancing. the bears and cardinals made the ncaa tournament. cal was a little suspect, got a tough draw. the bears are an eight seed in the greensboro region and will play number nine north carolina on saturday in waco, texas. if they get past the tar heels, they play top seed baylor on baylor's home court. stanford is a two seed in the chicago region, but will host the first two rounds at maples pavilion. this is stanford's 33rd trip to the post season. the oakland raiders have had a huge off-season acquiring antonio brown, trent brown, and tyrell williams, but no signing was more memorable than this one. you'll love this, deon.
