so you have to come to your tv and look at this. this is from the onset of spring that left one lake michigan covered in these shards of ice, and that lake is melting quickly causing the water to push up sheets of ice to the surface, making it look like a mosaic of blue tiles. i would never think this is a lake. look at this. the phenomenon is caused by water currently moving under the ice as lake michigan begins to thaw. of course it's not a river, it's a lake, and that is incredible. >> fascinating.

criminals like this. >> we hear the story over and over again where somebody calls the police and says, hey, my car got broken into. we can't do much about that. i have video. well the videos we get are not very good. then they send the videos from the owl camera and police say we have never seen video like this. we can see who it is. the one that hit me the most, there was a woman named jennifer, and she walked in front of the car and she points and says do you want to do this and they back off, in less than an hour those two guys were arrested. >> reporter: do you think it might change the way car owners and police deal with carjackings? >> i definitely think it's going to be a huge advantage, and huge for criminals as well because they'll think twice for sure. >> important to point out, police don't condone you ever going after thieves yourselves

this morning on "world news now," president trump is attacking the late senator john mccain, again. >> he said he did not get a thank you for mccain's funeral that took place seven months ago, and this morning he's facing criticism for his comments. hear from republicans coming to mccain's defense. also this morning, more fallout from the nationwide college admissions cheating scandal. new details about another student admitted to a prominent college after her parents allegedly paid her way on to a nationally ranked soccer team. the privacy of more than 1,000 people has been invaded after hidden cameras were found in a hotel. not only were those guest filmed but the footage was streamed around the world. it's a sight in the sky that has people turning heads wondering if it was a meteor or ufo. police got on twitter to see

this scene in the skies over los angeles caused quite a bit of confusion on the ground. some people who saw this thought a flaming meteor or a ufo was falling to earth. it turned out to be part of a wing suit flyers trailing sparks behind them, part of a stunt by red bull. the lapd tweeted letting the city know it was not an alien invasion or meteor invasion that it was a film shoot. he added, quote, this is tinsel town, after all. a little hollywood magic in real life. >> the building with the light on top, that's the intercontinental hotel, and there's a rooftop bar on top. on the 73rd floor. >> everybody thinking you have to get out of dodge. >> right? >> all right. this morning we're hearing new developments about a woman in arizona who has racked up more than 200 million views on youtube. >> she and her seven adopted children star in a popular youtube series. now authorities have charged her with abusing those children. here's abc's matt gutman.

>> reporter: their video antics reviewed a quarter billion times, but police say this serial abuse those little actors suffered was a dark, behind-the-camera secret. she adopted the children, ages 3-15, but, according to court documents, she beat and pepper sprayed them when they failed to memorize their lines. her fantastic adventures youtube channel had over 800,000 youtube subscribers. the on camera scenarios similar to what police say was their reality. >> see, we're trapped! >> reporter: investigators tipped off after her adult biological daughter came forward. her adoptive children claiming they did not go to school and that she would pepper spray all over their face and body, spanking them and forcing them to take ice baths and when resisting would force their heads underwater. the children allegedly beaten with hangers, forced to stand in a corner, hands raised above their head for 18 hours straight.

bush's passing. we'll show you what sully is up to on this thursday, march 21st. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good thursday morning, friday eve, slowly making it towards the weekend. >> almost there, my friend. >> getting there, yep. thanks for joining us this morning. we begin with the growing investigation into those two crashes of boeing 737 max jets. >> we are learning new details about the cockpit confusion even before the first tragedy involving that jet less than five months ago. the information comes as u.s. law enforcement steps up its role in determining how those jets were certified. here's abc's david kerley. >> reporter: word the fbi is joining the investigation into the certification of boeing's new 737 max after the two crashes, and chilling details about the first crash in indonesia. there was trouble the day before on the flight, the jet moving dramatically up and down after take off, the pilots confused. but a third pilot sitting in the jump seat, according to bloomberg, apparently saved the

flight. >> there was this chaotic situation in the cockpit and the pilots are trying to figure out how to solve it and are not making progress. the third guy sitting in the jump seat is the one who spoke up and said try turning off the trim system. >> reporter: boeing says the manual calls for for the automation to be disengaged. >> this simple procedure, if you have a problem with the autopilot is to shut it off. >> yeah. >> take control of the aircraft. i know i can play the airplane manually. >> reporter: in indonesia, the jump seat pilot saved the day and the problem was written up, the jet was put back into service the next day with a bad sensor, triggering the anti-stall system called m-cast forcing the nose down. during the accident flight, the pilots, according to bloomberg, while struggling with the aircraft were going through the emergency checklist but ran out of time having never turned off the system, crashing into the java sea. >> there are ways to cope with

the failure and what we have seen with lion air and potentially ethiopia, the pilots were not trained to cope with the problem. >> reporter: boeing says it will cooperate with all investigations including the one the fbi has now joined and the senate has set hearings on these crashes set for next week. david kerley, abc news, washington. >> such a big story impacting so many people because the max jets are still grounded in many countries, including here in the u.s. >> they are very prevalent. even a regulator in europe says that plane will not fly again until they have sufficient answers to what is going on and what happened. moving on to president trump's sustained attack against the late republican senator, john mccain. the president's newest remarks about mccain who died of brain cancer last year came before an audience of workers at a military tank factory in ohio. >> trump slammed mccain for supporting the u.s. wars in the east and a thumbs down vote on repealing obamacare.

then he got more personal by seeming to take credit for mccain's funeral and not getting a thanks from mccain's family. >> i gave them the kind of funeral he wanted, which as president i had to approve. i don't care about this. i didn't get a thank you, that's okay. we sent them on his way, but i am not a fan of john mccain. now what we can say is now we're all set. i don't think i have to answer that question. the press keeps, what do you think of mccain? what do you think? not my kind of guy but some people like him and i think that's great. >> republican senator johnny isakson called the remarks deplorable. he said the nation deserves better. senator lindsay graham, a close trump ally said the president's comments hurt trump more than they hurt the legacy of john mccain. nfl team owner, robert kraft is trying to make sure videos of him paying for sex acts at a spa are never publicly released. florida police say video does exist to prove the new england

patriots owner was soliciting prostitution earlier this year. kraft filed court papers asking that evidence in his case be kept private. meanwhile we're hearing for the very first time from a woman embroiled in this case. she spoke with abc's tara palmeiri. >> reporter: she's the woman smiling beside trump and his family at mar-a-lago events, and also is the founder and former owner of a florida massage parlor, recently busted for sex trafficking. a sting that led to the arrest of the president's good friend, patriots owner, robert kraft. cindy yang sold the spa six years ago, and since the raid her trump connection under the microscope. congressional democrats calling for an fbi counter intelligence investigation into whether yang sold access to the trump's to chinese business people. sitting down with me she denied it all, saying she is just a fan of the presidents. >> he's a business person. i am a small business person, too. i would believe that we would make the market great again. that reason i become the

tara palmeiri, palm beach, florida. justice clarence thomas surprised supreme court watchers, breaking his three-year silence during an argument. thomas questioned a defense lawyer trying to get her black client's death sentence overturned because the white prosecutor repeatedly excluded black people from the jury. the last time thomas spoke in court was in february of 2016. >> a connecticut woman says harvard is illegally profiting off portraits of two slaves she says are her ancestors. she is suing the school over the 1850 pictures of a man and his daughter. they are believed to be the earliest photos of american she says harvard has ignored her request to stop licensing the pictures and harvard has not commented on the suit. and environmental groups are concerned about air and water quality after a fire at a chemical plant near houston burned for three days. the tanks that caught fire contained components of gasoline

this was a near tragedy on a michigan road that was caught on police dashcam. a sleepy driver right there swerving in and out of traffic nearly collided head on with a patrol car on monday. the officers managed to avoid the crash and the driver told him he was listening to music in his ear buds to try and stay awake.
