can look to and admire. >> absolutely. stunning new developments in that investigation into boeing 737 max jets. we are learning money may have played a role in two crashes that took nearly 350 lives. >> both jets crashed due to a sensor issue that caused erratic movement shortly after taking off and the problem could have dealt with if boeing would have paid to install a fix. here's abc's david kerley. >> reporter: word that the 737 max in indonesia as well as the ethiopian airliner, both of which moved erratically up and down before crashing, lacked two available add-on safety systems which the airlines have to pay for. the 737 max 8 has a sensor on each side of the cockpit and it indicates if the plane is level or up or down, but one plane relied on just one sensor to engage. airlines can buy an option, which shows what both sensors

are saying in the cockpit. another option is a light to highlight if those sensors disagree. >> two identical sensors on the airline, they ought to work together. you should not have to pay extra to get them both to talk to the pilots. >> reporter: boeing's software update will now provide the sensor disagree light as standard and will, in the future, rely on both sensors before engaging the anti-stall system. >> the original design relied on the pilot's to take appropriate action, and what we learned from these two accidents that may not occur. >> reporter: in the u.s., southwest and american airlines, both paid for the additional safety features, united does not saying their pilots are trained to shut off the anti-stall system if it engages incorrectly. boeing continues to work on the software fix and indications are it could be ready next week or the following week for the entire fleet.wswashington.we ex
