chaos on the streets of seattle. >> the suspect is now standing in the middle of the road. >> it police say a man tried to carjack a woman in front of his home. the suspect then opened fire on a packed city bus. >> that vehicle veered off the road, at that point in time a metro bus was southbound on sand point way. >> reporter: amid the chaos the wounded bus driver managed to turn the bus around to shield his passengers from the suspect preventing any of them from getting hurt. but the suspect wasn't finished. witnesses say he then started shooting at random people in their cars killing at least one person. >> he was fired walking up the street firing and i jumped into my bushes hoping he wouldn't see my blue vest. he was walking down sand point way just firing at anything. just any regard.

>> reporter: during a brief police chase he crashed into another vehicle killing that driver before he was finally taken into custody. a deadly rampage but this morning police are hailing that city bus driver as a hero, for getting his passengers out of harm's way and preventing far more bloodshed. >> he acted heroically and put the well-being of his passengers above all else. >> incredible scene there. police have not released the suspect's name, only saying that he's in his 30s. the motive for the shooting and the initial carjacking attempt remain unclear. breaking overnight, the discount airline wow air has suddenly shut down canceling all flights. the airline based in iceland flies to u.s. cities including boston, newark, miami and detroit. the company has been facing some financial troubles and says it's working on a new deal with investors but until a deal is reached, all flights today have been postponed. many customers have taken to social media claiming they had

no warning and have now been stranded. the company is offering full refunds for today's flights. now to the health care fight in washington. the trump administration wants to throw out the entire affordable care act. also known as obamacare. insurance coverage for millions of americans could be at risk. but during a new interview overnight president trump made a promise, even as members of his own party voiced their doubts about his strategy. abc's mona kosar abdi has the latest from washington. good morning, mona. >> reporter: good morning, kenneth. republicans blindsided by this move are asking the president to hold off on eliminating obamacare until the white house has an alternative plan in place to protect americans, all 52 million of them, with pre-existing conditions. it was a central campaign promise. now president trump is once and for all looking to deliver on his plan telling fox -- >> we're going to have pre-existing condition,

founutely, and law passed under his predecessor protects more than 50 million with pre-existing conditions. on monday trump's justice department asked an appeals court to overturn it as unconstitutional despite pushback from members of his own administration. >> if the supreme court rules that obamacare is out, we will have a plan that's far better than obamacare. >> reporter: but there is no plan. so republicans are scrambling to come up with an alternative. >> we would start with coverage of pre-existing conditions. >> reporter: susan collins whose vote helped block the gop's last repeal effort pressed the president on his plan. >> there are a number of problems with the law that should be remedied, but this approach of trying to strike down the law in its entirety in the courts is not the right way to go.

>> reporter: democrats have also been quick to point out the risks. >> this means that insulin is going to get more expensive. this health insurance. >> reporter: protecting obamacare was a big reason they swept into the majority and an issue d is that it be far better than obamacare and protect people with pre-existing conditions but, kenneth, it's unclear how republicans will plan on achieving either. >> yeah, the president seems to be undeterred even by the critics. all right, money that, thank you. there's a new headline about special counsel robert mueller's report on the russia investigation. attorney general william barr is not committing to releasing the full report. barr told house judiciary chairman jerry nadler that the report is very substantial in length and will not be released before april 2nd, which is the deadline democrats had set. but some version of the report is expected in aprilment a jury in san francisco has awarded a man $8miio imed t wd kier roundup gave him cancer. jurors agreed with edward hardeman saying roundup played a

major role in his non-hodgkins lymphoma. monsanto maintains the product is safe but hardeman's attorney says the company must be held accountable. >> a corporation, no matter who you are including the largest in the world should be responsible. no longer should a company put a product on the market that they don't test and don't warn that it causes cancer. >> monsanto's parent company issued a statement saying it plans to appeal. it is also appealing a similar award from last year. the coach at the center of the college admissions bribery scandal is due in court today. rudy meredith, the former women's soccer coach at yale is expected to plead guilty to wire fraud. he faces possible jail time and has been ordered to forfeit nearly $900,000 he received in alleged bribes to get the children of wealthy parents into yale. authorities say his cooperation helped unravel the scheme. time now for a look at your weather for this thursday morning.

a florida lawyer sucker-punched in court is speaking out. julie chase was hit in that hard to watch video there by an inmate during a hearing in ft. lauderda lauderdale. chase says she's doing okay and says the incident was a shock. the suspect was already facing an assault charge. officials are investigating why he wasn't wearing restraints. they say he may suffer from mental illness. low levels of oil are being blamed for that cruise ship nightmare that forced the evacuation of hundreds of passengers off the coast of norway. authorities say rough water saturday that rocked the v cru movement in the oil tanks that it triggered an alarm indicating there wasn't enough oil and that caused the ship's engines to automatically shut down.

another woman is coming forward accusing r. kelly of sexual abuse. lanita carter tells cbs she was kelly's hairstylist for two years and says he sexually abused her during that time period. carter says she's been carrying her secret since 2003 o the new accusations. nature lovers taking selfies are causing headaches for authorities trying to protect thousands of flowers. crowds flocking to southern california to see the super bloom of poppies. in their rush to take those selfies, they are trampling the flowers. in one case a couple illegally landing a helicopter on the field of flowers and when officials tried to contact them, the couple ran back to their helicopter and got away. meanwhile, there is a similar problem in europe. farmers in holland are trying to ipthr mos. they are placing so-called ambassadors in the fields to keep things under control. now the big announcement overnight, there was only one winning ticket for last night's

we turn now to the latest on that stunning twist in the jussie smollett case. the fbi is now reviewing the decision made by chicago prosecutors to dismiss all 16 felony counts against the actor. >> and this morning new questions are being raised about whether smollett used his powerful connections to avoid prosecution. this morning, after that stunning reversal in the jussie smollett case. >> it doesn't add up. as i said yesterday, nothing here adds up. >> reporter: cook county state's attorney kim foxx is defending her office's decision to make a deal with the actor who police say orchestrated a hate crime with himself as the victim. >> our office handles cases like this, class four felonies, disorderly conducts in this way often. many of them with similar outcomes. that is in no way an indication by this office that he is not guilty of the crime that he was accused of. >> foxx recused herself from the case after revealing she'd had contact with smollett's representatives early on in the investigation.

and now new questions about whether the smollett family used political connections to thwart prosecution. texts and email messages obtained by abc station wls show that when smollett was still considered a victim by authorities, tina chen, former chief of staff for michelle obama reached out to foxx on behalf of the smollett family saying, they have concerns about the investigation. text messages between chen and foxx show foxx tried to get the case turned over to the fbi, which was what the family wanted. before smollett was considered a suspect, she texted, i make no guarantees but i'm trying. >> i talk to victims and victims' families all the time. unlike other victims that i talk to, they don't often go from victim to suspect. >> reporter: overnight the national district attorneys association slammed the cook county office saying the case illustrates the point that the rich are treated differently. the politically connected receive favorable treatment. according to new documents obtained by abc news from

chicago police, smollett made false reports to police for an undetermined motive. in response overnight, smollett's lawyers blasted the department calling the release of documents a smear campaign by police adding in a statement, the case is closed. no public official has the right to violate mr. smollett's due process rights. meanwhile, the lawyer for the two brothers who told police they helped smollett stage the attack says her clients are not lying. >> my two former clients told the truth. they're still a party to this that is not telling the truth. >> the police union wants the justice department to investigate kim foxx but she insists she did nothing wrong. the grandmother of a young woman sent to jail for pushing her former friend off a bridge says her granddaughter is not a bad person. taylor smith will spend two days behind bars for sending jordan holgersen plunging 60 feet into a river. smith will also have to work on wore her grandmother says smith did not mean any harm.
