the wreckage and black boxes from the ethiopian airlines crash revealing this morning that those pilots too fought that safety system and lost. one aviation source telling abc news that the boeing 737 max's anti-stall system did activate before the ethiopian airlines plane nosedived into the ground. that system known as mcas implicated in both the lion air crash and now ethiopian airlines as well. those two crashes claiming 366 lives in all. the system believing that the jet is stalling forces the nose of the aircraft down. in both crashes the pilots fought forcing the jet to make wild up and down movements. boeing is developing a software update changing the way that safety system is triggered and making it easier for pilots to recover control. on wednesday, boeing demonstrated that software to airlines and customers. american airlines' top pilot

says it will make the jet even safer. >> enhancements to a good system and they have put. >> reporter: that software is expected to be certified by the faa next week but at least american airlines says it could be two more weeks before the pilots and the jets return to the skies. the report doesn't look like it's coming. any good news in this, just the anti-stall system and the software fix may get that fleet back into the air. cecilia. >> david kerley on the story from the very beginning, thanks. we are going to turn to president trump fired up in his first rally since robert mueller concluded his investigation. the president in michigan was lashing out going after democrats' personal appearance, profanity and declaring vindication. senior national correspondent

terry moran is there. this is vintage donald trump but he had a lot to get off his chest. >> good morning. it was a doozy of a trump rally. almost an hour and a half long, a packed house. he was letting his anger come out and venting and promising payback. >> the collusion delusion is over. >> reporter: overnight in michigan president trump triumphant reveling in this moment. >> the special counsel completed its report and found no collusion and no obstruction. i could have told you that 2 1/2 years ago very easily. >> reporter: in his first rally since special counsel robert mueller concluded his investigation, the president had a lot to get off his chest. >> total exoneration, complete

vindication. you know, it's interesting, robert mueller was a god to the democrats, was a god to them until he said no collusion. they don't like him so much. >> reporter: the president brushed aside the argument that while mueller found no russian collusion, he didn't actually clear the president on obstruction of justice charges. it was attorney general william barr who said mueller's team lacked the evidence opthat crime. but this was a night the president was celebrating, punctuated the moment with a bit of profanity. >> defrauding the public with ridiculous [ bleep ]. partisan investigations. >> reporter: and tearing into democrats who pushed the probe like house intelligence committee chairman adam schiff. >> little pencil neck adam schiff got the smallest neck

i've ever seen. sick, sick, these are sick people. >> reporter: again and again trump gleefully rubbed it all in on his critics and for good measure he argued they shouldn't be called elite anymore. he and his legions of maga supporters should. >> they're the elite. i'm not. well, i have a better education than them. i'm smarter than them. i went to the best schools. they didn't. much more beautiful house. much more beautiful apartment. much more beautiful everything. >> quite a night, but maybe another chapter in this mueller investigation. we have learned that that full mueller report, not the four-page letter released by former attorney barr, but 400 pages long. democrats are clamoring for it to be released. it's interesting talking to people at that rally, nearly all of them, they want it released, too.

>> that was surprising to hear. let's turn to another controversy. the funding for the special olympics. after the trump administration proposed cutting millions for the program, president trump now says they're not actually going to make the cuts. >> it's a post-mueller situation really. the news cycle is not going to be dominated by the russia investigation. and, so, this story, this is a cut that the president had proposed in previous budgets to zero out, to kill all federal support for special olympics. this time people noticed it and there was a great deal of outrage on both sides and the president backed down. cecilia. >> terry moran, thank you. the president also took on jussie smollett who's facing new trouble this morning. the city of chicago is demanding more than $130,000 in reimbursement for its investigation of that alleged hate crime. abc's adrienne bankert is in los

>> reporter: the city threatens to follow through with prosecuting smollett for what they're calling his false police report but the actor's team is firing back. they write in a statement, it is the mayor and the police chief who owe jussie, owe him an apology for dragging an innocent man's character through the mud. jussie has paid enough. and the city is giving smollett just days to decide whether he'll pay that $130,000 or face further legal action. amy. >> the saga does continue. adrienne bankert, thank you. turning to an update on wow air. the icelandic budget airline that ceased operations due to bankruptcy grounding flights, leaving travelers stranded across at least two continents and thousands of them now with those worthless tickets, but people stuck with a wow air ticket can now head over to iceland air which is offering discounted fares for select locations. >> a lot of frustrated passengers. also, there are new developments in that grand canyon accident.

crash investigation. reports this morning that the black box data from that ethiopian airlines crash reveals a safety system was incorrectly activated and that's the same thing that happened on that deadly lion air flight. severe storms are hitting the central u.s. today bringing heavy rain to the midwest where they are still dealing with major flooding and take a look at this. a real-life mary poppins moment in turkey. a man was trying to secure this umbrella. wait for it. oh, yeah. when all of a sudden he got swept up. he okay. >> kind of scary but kind of fun, i don't know. we turn to those new allegations about that on stage attack that ended the infamous las vegas siegried & roy show and nearly ended roy's life 15 years ago. their former animal handler is now speaking out to "the hollywood reporter" with what he believes happened. abc's paula faris is here with more on this. good morning, paula. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. this is his version of what

happened that night. their former animal handler says roy made an error on stage which he believes led to the attack with nearly fatal consequences. night after night for more than a decade they dazzled the vegas strip performing seemingly menagerie of wild animals.side a over more than 5,000 shows, the las vegas legends performed flawlessly and so did their prowling growling co-stars, that is, until roy horn's 59th birthday in 2003 when in the middle of a performance a 400-pound siberian tiger named mantacore pounced on him biting his neck and ending the duo's career. >> the sound was just i remember being so loud, pow, pow, pow. >> reporter: now 16 years later one of the men behind the tigers is speaking out saying what he

thinks happened during that infamous incident. in a new interview with "the hollywood reporter," animal trainer chris lawrence tells the magazine they didn't like making mistakes and never owned them in front of an audience. the legendary magicians known for their animal illusions told investigators at the time and the public that roy had suffered a stroke on stage prompting mantacore to lunge. >> you think he picked you up as tigers do, their cubs. >> yeah. >> you felt nothing. >> very gentle. >> reporter: but now according to "the hollywood reporter," lawrence acknowledges that roy had a stroke but says it happened as a result of that attack. lawrence also lays the blame for the incident on roy's own human error saying instead of walking mantacore in a circle as is usually done, he just used his arm to steer him right back into his body, adding by roy not following the correct procedure, it fed into confusion and

rebellion. investigators found the tiger blameless, and he later returned to siegried & roy's home showing abc's elizabeth vargas how close their bond remained. but lawrence tells "the hollywood reporter" that bond had weakened in the years leading up to the attack. i am positive that roy's diminishing relationship with mantacore was a key factor in the attack. siegried & roy's show, which ran for 13 years and drew in $45 million a year, is now long since shuttered. they did not respond to lawrence's allegations in "the hollywood reporter." a representative for siegried & roy tells abc news the duo has no comment. again, this is lawrence's version of the events. he says he's speaking out now because he has struggled ever since that attack. he's been diagnosed with ptsd. he's battled alcoholism and suicidal thoughts. it has been over 15 years. he says he lives it every day. he lives it every night. it still haunts him.

his wife says a part of her husband, the animal handler, died that night. >> it was a sad story all around. all right, paula. thank you so much. now to that cold case murder leading to the arrest of the victim's husband. john quinones has been covering it for a decade and joins us with the very latest. good morning. >> good morning. i first spoke to janet abaroa's family when the investigation into her murder was going nowhere. it was a cold case. after our reporting it was reactivated with a new investigation leading to the victim's body being exhumed and her husband arrested. it was the chilling 2005 murder case that rattled durham, north carolina. raven abaroa telling police he returned home after a nighttime soccer match with friends to find his wife janet dead in an upstairs office. >> 911, where is the emergency? >> i'm at home. my wife, she's dead. she's been shot and there's

blood everywhere. >> reporter: authorities discovering that janet had actually been stabbed to death, not shot. the couple's baby boy kaiden found unharmed in another room. >> he said it was an intruder. >> raven said it was a break-in. the detectives didn't say it was a break-in. >> reporter: abaroa claimed he was innocent and the investigation stalled. in 2009 a new detective was assigned to the cold case. while going through some scene photos he makes a suspicious finding and it seems to poke a hole in abaroa's story that janet was heading to bed when he left home to play soccer. >> the first thing i'm looking at is, well, her contact lens case is open. i said to myself she's ready to go to bed, you know, she still has her contacts in, you know, that's unusual. >> i knew right away that she was not ined. i knew that he was lying. >> reporter: abaroa was arrested in february of 2010 and charged with first degree murder in janet's death.

her body exhumed five months later. authorities determining she was still wearing those contact lenses when she was buried. >> after i received these fragments that i then cleaned them. the material actually resumed a convex shape typical of your contact lens. but the key was finding the numbers 123. this was conclusive evidence that this was an accuvue contact lens. >> reporter: in 2013 raven abaroa goes on trial for first degree murder but a jury fails to reach a verdict. before his second trial he enters an alford plea for voluntary manslaughter acknowledging there was enough evidence to convict him but not admitting guilt. abaroa was released from prison on christmas day 2017. now we reached out to raven but he's declined to speak with us. since his release from prison we've learned that he's been spending time with his now teenage son and he appears to be

we are back we are back now with the song that's a little bit country but apparently not enough. the viral hit "old town road" by lil nas x debuting on the billboard country charts until billboard pulled it deciding it wasn't country enough. that's not striking a good chord with a lot of fans out there and abc's chris connelly is here with more. good morning, chris. >> good morning, michael. you know, some concerns being raised about what determines whether a track qualifies as a country song and how limiting that definition might be. ♪ i got the horses in the back horse tack is attached hat is matte black ♪ >> reporter: when is a song that's been played on country radio suddenly judged to be not a country song? when it's this song. ♪ riding on a horse ha you can whip your porsche i been in the valley you ain't been up off that horse now ♪ >> reporter: "old town road" from lil nas x kicked up some outrage along with its boot heels after getting taken off

the billboard country chart with a boost from a mega influencer named justin bieber, it tore through tiktok and the 19-year-old atlanta native had a full-fledged viral hit. >> it got popular so fast it didn't have an official release so radio deejays were ripping the song from youtube to play on the airwaves. >> reporter: it found a quick foothold on three different charts, the hot 100, hip-hop and r&b and hot country songs where it hit number 18, not for long, though, with billboard 86'ing it off the country chart declaring while "old town road" incorporates references to country and cowboy images, it does not embrace enough elements of today's country music to chart in its current version. that decision earned one big hmm with some wondering were those elements its sound, its tone or something else? ♪ some recall reports in 2016 that

beyonce's "daddy lessons" had been denied a country nomination by the grammys after its committee rejected the song. social media saw some sharp comments on "old town road's" behalf. meghan linsey, it's got plenty of country elements and is as country as anything on country radio. billboard responding to the backlash saying their decision to take it off the country chart had absolutely nothing to do with the race of the artist. lil nas x's own response. just because old town road has funny lines, doesn't mean it's parody. it has a theme. anybody with ears can tell i put some kind of effort into that song. and there are, of course, successful african-american artists in country music. not about that. some of us remember the days when prince couldn't get played on rock radio so it's about some fans hoping that all genres not be so restrictive, let's face it, being open to new sounds, new influence can be good for any kind of music. michael.

>> thank you so much, chris. bobby bones is the host of the nationally syndicated bobby bones show and one of the most powerful and respected people in country music has joined us. thank you for joining us. get right to it. is this a country song? >> yeah, why not. i think country music -- it's always about the message, you know, i listened to the song. i like the song, i play the song on my show. here's what it comes down to. there are traditionalists in all formats that always want to keep the format traditional and happens in a lot of country music. i don't think it's about the race. there are songs that like sam hunt had a song breakup in a small town where he talks through the song. i had to hear the same thing about that's not country. the one thing that is constant with country or any format is that it's changing and the other constant is people are always going to complain it's changing so i'm totally cool with it being a country song. >> you've seen nelly cross over. music is all blending together but what exactly makes something a country song? >> the message, i'm telling you, it's really the message and

authenticity of it. you know, i think people look at lil nas x as is he a rapper? regardless of, you know, what the message is about because all the instrumentation in the song is instruments that use contemporary country music, so i believe it where they go it doesn't sound like country. all of this other stuff is in country music. is he a rapper? that's unfair. if he says he's a country artist, let the consumer decide and play it on my show and see if people get upset or like it. >> you play it on your show. >> i do. when it was playing in the back i was watching everyone bop their head to it. and we're also in a time too where they want to put genres in boxes and that just isn't happening so much anymore. so if you say you're country and your message is country, then you're country to me. >> well, you know what, you're going to stick around and help us out later. i agree, amy, cecilia are over there dancing and bopping to it, too. i'm all in. that's country to me. stick around and we'll talk about "american idol" when you come back in a little bit.

>> i'm waiting for the photo, michael. >> no photos will follow. the top headlines. breaking news in the boeing investigation. reports the black box from that ethiopian airlines crash reveals a safety system was incorrectly activated. it's the same thing that happened on that failed lion air flight and let's go back to abc's david kerley with more. good morning again, david. >> reporter: good morning, michael. two sources telling abc news that the anti-stall system did engage. that is our first true connection between that crash and the lion air crash earlier, which ended up grounding the entire fleet of 737s. that anti-stall system would have forced the nose down and that would explain why the aircraft would be going up and down in a dramatic way as the pilots were trying to pull up the nose. the sources telling abc news that the black box data does reveal that the so-called mcas system was engaged. that is the same system that was implicated in the first 737 max

jet crash in indonesia. boeing has been updating software changing the way the safety system is triggered and making it easier for pilots to control. on wednesday boeing demonstrated that software to the airlines. it will make the jet even safer and the software has to be certified by the faa and a couple more weeks to train the pilot. we are still awaiting the preliminary report. it looks like it has been delayed another day or two. >> thank you so much, david. we turn to president trump celebrating the end of the mueller investigation at a campaign rally in michigan overnight. the president also launching an attack on democrats with especially harsh words for congressman adam schiff. abc's senior national correspondent terry moran back again from grand rapids with the latest. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. it was a doozy of a trump rally. almost an hour and a half long.

a packed house. the president just having a great time but if you expected generosity or magnanimity in this victory lap, well this, is donald trump. he was letting his anger come out a little bit, venting there, promising payback to his political enemies. >> the collusion delusion is over. >> reporter: overnight in michigan president trump triumphant reveling in this moment. >> the special counsel completed its report and found no collusion and no obstruction. i could have told you that two and a half years ago very easily. >> reporter: in his first rally since special counsel robert mueller concluded his investigation, the president had a lot to get off his chest. >> total exoneration, complete vindication. you know, it's interesting, robert mueller was a god to the democrats, was a god to them until he said there was no collusion.

they don't like him so much right now. >> reporter: the president there brushed aside the argument that while mueller found no russian collusion, he didn't actually clear the president on obstruction of justice charges. it was attorney general william barr who said mueller's team lacked the evidence on that crime. but this was a night the president was celebrating. punctuating the moment with a bit of profanity. >> defrauding the public with ridiculous [ bleep ]. [ cheers ] partisan investigations. >> reporter: yeah, it's a post-mueller situation really. the news cycle is not really going to be dominated anymore by the russia investigation and so this story, this is a cut that the president had proposed in previous budgets to zero out, to kill all federal support for special olympics. this time people noticed it and there was a great deal of

"gma" cover story. it's on cbd. suddenly it's in everything and with claims that it can help cure a variety of ailments. walgreens is announcing they are entering the mix. from salves to oil, gummies to jelly beans cannabidiol better known as cbd is found everywhere. the naturally occurring compound won't get you high like thc but

it is being touted as a potential cure-all for everything from anxiety to pain, depression, even acne and with business expected to boom to the tune of $22 billion by 2022, walgreens now announcing it will be making cbd products available at 1500 stores across the country. in a statement, the company saying, the product offering is in line with our efforts to provide a wider range of accessible health and well-being products and services to best meet the needs and preferences of our customers. all right. and dr. ashton is here to break it all down. good morning to you, my friend. let's talk about it. what exactly is cbd? >> we have to start with the terminology. the term medical marijuana is the wrong term. marijuana is the wrong term. the plant is cannabis. if you break it up, the two main compounds with cbd which does not make you high, thc which does have a psychoactive component and then for medicinal uses there are products that

contain both so that is very important. it gets very confusing when you start to talk about hemp, whether or not hemp can produce cbd products, and when you talk about over-the-counter products, it gets even murkier because we don't even know if the cbd in there is really of any significant concentration that it can have any potential benefits. >> you do see it everywhere now. what are some of the reasons people are using it. >> well, we know based on good science that there is something inside our bodies called the endocannabidiol system and they work from our immune system to cardiovascular, pain, inflammation, you name it. we need more research on this, cecilia. the world's best research right now is really coming out of israel. but this is in its infancy and it's an active area. >> we'll see it in walgreens soon. is the fda saying anything? >> very, very cautious. they're saying we have to proceed with caution.

they have a problem as they always do with claims made, so if you see this can cure, treat or prevent, you need to beware. for me personally as a practicing physician, i have really evolved on this. years ago i was completely cynical and skeptical. i've attended medical cannabis conferences recently at ucla and i personally think that the risk benefit profile for medicinal cannabis is actually safer in many cases than things like opiate, things like benzodiazepines like xanax and see it will enter mainstream. >> for cbd if a patient says, i want to use this as an oil or whatever. >> trial and error, proceed with caution and also let your health care provider know that you're using it and then, you know, we'll have to see. >> dr. ashton, thank you so much. amy, over to you. now to an incredible young woman who has a very big decision to make. she's been accepted to more than 50 colleges. she's earned more than a million dollars in scholarships and now she gets to decide where she wants to go and abc's will reeve is here with her incredible story.

>> you know, i'll never forget when you came here the first time when we announced the cast of "dancing with the stars" and you were so nervous. >> i was a deer in headlights. i have to dance? >> now you dance out here to the crowd like it's nothing. so i -- so i take it that life as the reigning champ is pretty good. >> i still can't dance, as you can see. like i tried. i tried -- here's the thing, as i go to like airports and people be like, hey, bobby, will you dance, like just randomly, i'll be sweats walking out of the bathroom. sometimes i'll be at the urinal, hey, will you do a little dance? like we saw you on "dancing with the stars" and so i got like one move and i do that one over and over again but it's been good. i keep the trophy. >> what's the one move? >> you want it? >> yeah, we want to see it. you need room for it. >> so here's the thing, i need a lot of space, i'm not stretched. i might pull something. i got one move where i put my

hands like this and i go. >> okay. [ applause ] >> so where is the mirror ball trophy. >> the mirror ball, i'm pretty shy about it. it's right when you walk in my front door right in the middle of the hallway with a spotlight on it. >> i was not a good dancer. it was controversial that i won. but i'm going to tell you why i won is because i think people saw them in me and me in them whenever i was out there dancing because i had never trained. i struggled but i tried to share that and i think that's what i'm doing on "american idol" now is that i'm talking to them about sharing their stories and so i think that's even why the show is so successful is because of the human element of "american idol" and that's why i'm so proud to be a part of it this season. really memorable moments from "dancing" with the top hat on and threw it. got you the perfect score. we saw it when you were coming out. is it true that hat ended up on ebay?

>> i would have thrown anything. my pants, like anything i could have thrown into the crowd i was so excited and i threw my hat and then i thought that was the end of it and i get a note from someone who was in the crowd that said, hey, this is probably important to you, i found it on ebay. i bought it and mailed it back to me and so now, yeah, i wear it to bed every night. it's amazing. but, yes, so now i have it, yeah. >> i think we're all glad the hat was the only thing you can get off after the dance. the pants can be a little awkward. now you're back on "american idol." a mentor on the show and working with katy perry, lionel richie and luke bryan. of all three which do you think could win "dancing with the stars." >> if you looked strategically katy has done the most dancing. you know, she has background -- >> luke has that booty shake. >> luke has the hardest freestyle. luke thrusts, right? like there is a lot of passion in the luke bryan dance so i think luke would probably win like lionel has the history and done it the longest.

katy has done it the most but luke has the drive is there can't compete. >> can't compete with heart and booty and that's what he's got. >> i'm going to agree. >> you thought the judges were too harsh last season. >> just one time. i feel like on my radio show and in life like i'm an advocate for the underdog, like i grew up in a town of 700 people. like nobody was like, bobby, you're good and i feel like for me i need to represent those people and i'm there and i'm an advocate for the contestants and i felt like the judges at that point were being a little unfair because they weren't seeing what we were seeing at home. now, i was in the back watching on a monitor so i went out. they didn't know i was going to say it and said i don't agree with you guys and i thought katy was going to jump me after the show. i think that hopefully i can be consistent in just saying how i feel and really sticking up for the contestants, not always in a good way. there are times when i go to them and say on last week's show there was a girl going to

perform an original. don't do it. it's not good enough. you need -- she changed and luckily she got through or i would have been a real dope but i just want to be an advocate for the contestants on the show. >> speaking of that because we actually havet a clip of you giving a pep talk to a contestant who doesn't think he can compete because he doesn't have formal music training. so take a look, everyone. >> there's a beauty to not knowing the rules because then you don't play by them. i did that "dancing with the stars." everybody was better than i was. watching them because there was no need for me to watch something that has no effect on me. they don't affect you one bit. don't listen to that. come on. >> ah, that's awesome. and how did that end? >> well, it ends with wade doing a real fantastic performance and i hope that what he understood was is that the real greats, you know, they don't know what the rails are so they're able to create outside of them and they create the new rails for everybody else and so that was

what i was talking to him as he said i haven't had this formal training while there are people singing their brains out like the right way it's the people who don't do it the right way that make a new right way and i'm trying to explain that to him and he's real good. i think you're going to like what you see. >> okay. [ applause ] >> by the way, can i say, this is the clappingest group of people i've ever seen in my life. >> serious. >> they're happy, man. >> i lifted my hand up and they clapped. this is crazy. >> i was going to say we owe you a congratulations because you just got this big honor at the country music hall of fame. honored in -- >> yeah, they made an exhibit about me. >> it's really cool. >> they made me stand in it for like ten hours a day. no. >> oh, there it is. >> this means you have officially made it. >> no, no, no. i haven't officially -- i don't even have a girlfriend. how making can you get -- >> ladies. >> thank you. >> it's really cool for me because i'm such a fan of the history of country music and they built this thing and

>> yes, she does. >> how do you feel about that? >> i'm so glad you asked. well, you know, the whole idea is that my character is going through postpartum depression and dave wanted it to see like i cut my hair myself and went to a proper salon to get it cut and colored. so it's this kind of choppy asymmetrical brassy blond look. as an actor it's fun because i really don't look like myself and our writers walked right past me and didn't recognize me in it which is always a good thing. >> we have a clip for everyone to watch, a preview so let's take a look. >> you're supposed to say that's not our plan. >> i don't even know where to start. >> child services is a good place. >> here, take -- go back to -- one or two or whatever. >> catherine is momma and i'm ma-ma. >> you didn't want to go with mommy? >> catherine. >> okay.

postpartum -- i cry every single episode. >> catherine's hair is also the topic of the favorite insult on the show. >> catherine, why is that your hair? it's just -- makes me laugh. i think about it all the time. >> we asked the others in a tv-friendly way, do you have a favorite insult as well because i know there are a lot of them we can't say here. >> yeah, there are a lot that aren't morning television friendly but i really loved actually when -- there's a moment where my character in an uncharacteristic gesture speaks up to her mom and goes on a long tirade against her and the only response selina has is why do you look like a waiter and she completely misses the sentiment of catherine speaking up for herself for probably one of two times in the entire series. >> it is so funny and it's sad to see it end but so excited we have this final season so thank you both for being with us. the final season of "veep" premieres sunday night on hbo. ginger, over to you. amy, it is friday, i think
