border showdown with mexico takes center stage today on the campaign trail. hello, i'm eric thomas. thanks for joining us. to developing news on the president's call to shut down the border with mexico. tara palmieri is traveling with the president in florida and has the voices weighing in today about the announce month. >> reporter: beto o'rourke officially launching his presidential candidacy from his hometown in texas, a city that lies just miles from the border in mexico, a border president trump is threatening to close. >> this area has welcomed thousands from mexico. >> reporter: praising the pro-immigrant stance of his community, just one day after president trump ordered they put an end to the influx of migrants, claiming he'll shut down the border if not.

>> for us, it's the uncertainty is the worst thing that can happen. >> reporter: a border shutdown would cause severe economic consequences. an average of $1.7 billion worth of goods cross back and forth between the u.s. and mexico every day. >> you're going to lose $1 billion a day to stop a few families from coming through? that doesn't make sense. >> reporter: the president's threat just as a new caravan is approaching the border. >> we were paying them to tremendous amounts of money. and we're not paying them anymore, because they haven't done a thing for us. >> reporter: so far, mexican reaction to the border shutdown threat is muted. mexico's presidnt saying i'm not going to start an argument over this. the u.s. border patrol issuing a statement saturday saying they're overwhelmed by the influx of migrants. with most shelters filled beyond capacity, it has begun processi

processing families. newsom released a statement that says, quote, the president is demonizing legal asylum seekers, we must call it out. newsom is scheduled to visit el salvador next week. and there's strong reaction in the bay area to the president's proposal. we have opinions on both sides. cornell bernard is in our newsroom with that part of the story. >> president trump says if the system at the border isn't fixed, he will close it. some here in the bay area hope he doesn't make good on that threat, but others hope he does. the trump administration calls it a cascading crisis at the u.s. southern border, a surge of migrants, creating a humanitarian crisis. >> i think the president is entirely misguided.

>> reporter: this man imgreated to the u.s. with his family. he believes president trump is wrong. >> the border is the port of entry for commerce, for people. and shutting the border is a misguided attempt by the president. >> reporter: jackie speier is feeling a bit of deja vu. she doesn't know what to make of the president's threat. >> i'm getting to the point where i think the president cries wolf too many times. he says he was going to pull our troops out of syria, which would have been a mistake. >> reporter: but the hispanic republicans say shut it down. >> that border is controlled by drug cartels and criminals. it is, human traffickers. it is not controlled by the ou. government. somebody has to be an adult and take control. >> the president says he could shut down the border next week if they do not stop the flow of

migrants into the u.s. three people in the south bay face charges in a worker visa fraud scheme. the suspects operated a santa clara consulting firm called nano semantics which put skilled workers at bay area tech firms. they are said to have submitted fraudulent forms. they face a maximum of 10 years in federal prison. to the weather. and it's feeling like spring this weekend. it was all sunny, and very few clouds in the sky as you see there from our view in the east bay. drew tuma has a look at the rest of the weekend. is there rain in it? >> the weekend is going to be fantastic. certainly starting out in a spectacular start. you have boats on the bay.

the rolling stones have postponed all upcoming concert dates, including their may 18th performance at levi's stadium so mick jagger can receive medical treatment. the band made the announcement today and did not release exactly why. he is expected to make a full recovery. the no filter tour was expected to begin april 20th in miami. jagger sent a tweet this morning plieding a pli apologizing and saying i'm devastated to have to postpone the tour. burning man organizers are fighting exploitation of the culture and have made key changes in how they sell tickets. the ceo says they want to increase the number of attendees invested. burning man says it is expanding the low-income ticket program.
