and tomorrow is athth here now with taya kyle, best-selling author, devoted mom of two and one of the most resilient women i am blessed to call a friend. she's the wife of chris kyle. she has written another brand-new book. it's called "american spirit." it profiles everyday heroes from all across the country. please welcome taya kyle back to "good morning america." last time, as my mama used to say, good to lay my eyes on you. it's so good to lay my eyes on you. i remember hanging out with you down in texas, and oh. you were going through a difficult time. it was soon after your beloved husband, chris, and how are you? how is the family doing now? >> we're doing so well. it's blowing my mind lately. i mean, my kids are fantastic. they're funny. they're growing up. they're just a blast to hang out with. and i'm really doing well too which is a nice thing to be able
8:22 am
to say after all this time, and i think one of the reasons i'm doing so well is the stories in "american spirit." i mean, those people inspired me along the way and reminded me that the world is full of good, you know? it's not all rough and hard when even when there is rough and hard, there is good from it. >> my mom said find the happy sorrow and make your mess your message, as well. which we find over and over. some people might think, oh, gosh. the american spirit. we're going through difficult times right now. >> right. >> but you say it is alive and well. >> it's sort of -- you have your friend and i know you have because you're a sensitive person and you watch people struggle. you say, i know you're angry. you're hurting. i see your soul. your soul is good. that's how i look at this country. it's my love letter to the country. i see that we're angry and i see that we're hurting. i see we're so much more than politics. so much more than these issues. we're good. we have soul. we have character. there are so many people doing good things, and i want people to see that.
8:23 am
so that we son kconcentrate on more. >> you did a beautiful job, you and jim. who wrote with you your first book as well, "american wife." whether it's the little kid who is starting a lemonade stand or zack brown who is helping children with disabilities, there are people that we know and there are people that we should know in this book, and that was important to you. all walks of life. >> i wanted to take everybody from kids to older people and different backgrounds, sports players. everyday joe type of people. i want people to know it's happening all around you. just open your eyes and also consider getting involved. >> yes, and you really feel that way. >> i do. >> and you said it in the book, just don't read it. maybe it will inspire you to do something on your own. veterans, special place in your heart. >> yep, yep. >> and there's an air force vet you write about. tell people about him. >> donny davis is a great guy. he was struggling. he had ptsd. he became a pastor to help other people. he ended up with this property that he bought and he puts tiny houses on it, and those tiny houses are really awesome.
8:24 am
most people know about it, and it's very veterans. they heal, and find jobs and do better things, but they have a community there. he's just getting started. it's awesome to see the corporations are backing it. people get it. they care. >> i love how you start. you're talking about the pioneering spirit. that's with us. and you say that's what we have to hold on to. >> right. that's what jim and i talked about in the beginning. i would travel for speaking engagements. i would see these people and meet all these wonderful people. i'm, like, why are we not talking about this? i thought, their pioneering spirit because jim was writing a book at the same time about the west and spirit. it's still alive. it's people sacrificing themselves and their time for the next generation. it's -- it's people giving of themselves and risking great odds just to do good. >> it doesn't have to be something grand. >> no. >> it can be the smallest thing -- >> right. >> that could help
8:25 am
if you can just -- my sister started an organization, each one save one. if you just look at it like that. >> that's what in this book. a lot of these people didn't start out to do something big. they started out small. it just sparked something else and rippled out. >> and so many kids. so many kids you write about. the lemonade stand. how millions of dollars was able to be raised through that. >> i think part of it is, we look at the next generation. every generation has done it. every one says the next one is going to ruin the country. and we rally. i'm looking at these kids going, there are so many good kids out there doing awesome things. we need to remember that. >> lastly, people reach out to you. it's great to see you. i haven't seen you in sometime. we're text buddies. we text back and forth and keep up. how have you been able to -- and i'm so happy to see this light back in you. and just tell people what has helped you get to this point? >> i really think it is seeing -- it's my faith 100%. i know it's god. i have seen him so much in my depths. i have a vision of, i kept feeling like god was asking me to jump off a cliff without a parachute. one day i was crying feeling sorry for myself. i was saying i've done it. i've proven it.
8:26 am
that's where the blessing is. one of the guys in the book, mike, talks about a program called horses and heroes. he talks about the easy way will kill you. i think you know that. the hard things in life have brought you more joy when you get through it. your perspective is different. >> my mother had a poem. she said, i walked a mile with pleasure. she shattered all the way. i was none the wiser for all she had to say. i walked a mile with sorrow and ne'er a word said she. but oh the things i learned from her when sorrow walked with me. >> okay. that's beautiful. yeah. see? look at the -- look at the impact your mom makes, right? that's a perfect example. you have talked about your mom a lot with me and i know you have with your audiences on camera, and the thing is she -- she sparked something in you, and look what you do. you bring it to millions. you just never know. >> and you're doing it. "american spirit" is out tomorrow. [ cheers and applause ]

the show came along. i saw this opportunity in the first episode for a woman to find her empowerment again. and she had lived this life. where she was sort of stuck in a rut. and -- i just thought, you know, i'm 20 pounds overweight. my life is totally not where i thought it would be. i want to put all of this into this character. i asked the show runner, can i do that? i think in society today, we're so far out there and it's so crazy this world that if you don't have a show with a little spine and a little grit, it almost feels like "leave it to beaver." it doesn't work anymore. so -- then, i liked the sort of tone of the marriage that though mine wasn't working, i like to see things that are about a good relationship. we're all going to try and practice that in our life. and whatever unconventional forms that is. love is love.
