southern california. l.a. first responders say at least nine people were injured. los angeles police say they have identified a suspect in the killing. shifting to the east bay, an engineer is under arrest, accused of trying to poison his co-worker. >> cornell bernard has the shocking details tonight. >> reporter: yeah, dan and ama, what a bizarre case this is. an engineer that worked at this firm, accused of slowly poisoning a co-worker starting in 2017. >> you don't hear about that stuff around here. >> reporter: morgan davis just found her neighbor, david chu, is in jail, charged with attempted murder. >> i saw like three officers, and they were in uniform but in clack. >> reporter: he's a chemical engineer at berkeley engineering and research. police say he's charged with

trying to kill a colleague by poisons her food and water. documents say the victim noticed a strange taste and smell from her water and food that she left unattended in her office. her own relatives also got sick last fall when they drank from her water bottle. surveillance footage from the woman's office showed chu adding a substance to the woman's water bottle on two occasions. water samples tested positive for cadnium. the lab had no comment. his linked in page says she's served as consultant in materials and chemicals. someone at his lafayette home declined comment and asked us to leave. so the big question is why? a motive remains unknown. the victim is recovering. i spoke with her briefly tonight. she had no comment.

the suspect is in jail. he is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow. cornell bernard, "abc7 news." >> cornell, thank you. a shift to the weather for a moment. there is more rain on the way. >> meteorologist drew tuma joins us with the forecast. >> yeah, what we're tracking is still some light showers out there. live doppler 7, you can see there's green on the screen, so w'll zoom in a little bit tighter and show you where the showers are right now. live doppler 7 estimating this rain is coming down at about 0.02 of an inch per shower, so that's essentially drizzle overhaed. we'll combine satellite, and the reason we're see thing rain return to the region, there's a cold front just offshore, and that is going to move through california the next 24 hours. so we keep the born impact scale not only tonight but through tomorrow. so we're take a look at how long this storm sticks around tomorrow and another storm coming up in the forecast.

was in spanish by one employee. then a second employee felt the need to speak up. moran captured that confrontation on video. when customers visit this shell gas station, they expect a full tank of gas, not racial remarks. >> you don't tell me when i should talk in spanish or not. >> reporter: a short conversation was interrupted by this employee. she demanded the pair speak english. >> i went up to her and i apologized, i said excuse me, i'm sorry, all she was saying is greeting me in spanish, how my day was going. she said, i don't care, you talk in english, because this is america. >> reporter: she says the woman grew even more hostile. >> she started saying something about trump needs to hurry up and build the wall. that's when i was like, oh, my gosh, she's being serious. i just got my phone, started videotaping her. umfsme. it too firefighters several hours to get that fire under control. boeing 737 max jets will remain grounded for weeks apparently while the manufacturer continues to work on a software fix. the company submitted the fix to the faa last week and demonstrated the changes for officials last wednesday. but the faa says the company found additional work is needed before they're airworthy. they hope to receive the final package in the coming weeks. uber says it's committed to raising public awareness following the death of a college student who called an uber and got into the wrong car. the driver now faces charger in the murder of 21-year-old samantha josephson in south carolina. y uber said it works with police and college campuses to educate people how to avoid fake rideshare drivers. how do you know if the rideshare you're about to get into is safe?

building a better bay area. this week we turn our focus to uber and lyft and ask do you know who your rideshare driver is? >> dan knnoyes is here with the investigation. >> reporter: these companies are making a lot of money but not doing enough to check out their drivers. don't mistake this woman's nervous laughter. she's terrified. she had done the right thing, not getting behind the wheel after a night out with friends in seattle and ordered a lyft. but at 2:45 in the morning, her driver followed her to the door, grabbing at her and grabbing himself. after two minutes, she smack s her behind and left. half hour later, the lyft driver tested the windows and knocked. >> he knows where i live. >> reporter: the woman asked me not to know where she lives, but

the lyft driver was convicted last september of assault with sexual motivation. >> i wouldn't give my address out to a random person. so it's person like this to have background checks. >> reporter: serious complaints about some rideshare drivers are coming from customers across the country and the bay area. tomorrow morning, orlando is scheduled to appear in court again. prosecutors call him the rideshare rapist for attacks on four women in five years, he says he's not guilty. i.c.e. reports he's in the country illegally. lyft removed him when the allegations became public. uber suspended this man a day before he sexualy assaulted a woman. he also still drove for ilyft, but police say he picked up the woman off the street.

>> at the time of the week, he had a fix of lyft and uber stickers to his window. >> reporter: and an uber driver was convicted of raping a female passenger. video shows him carrying the woman into a maryland hotel. the victim called police. >> do you have an emergency, ma'am? >> i don't know how i woke up here. >> reporter: uber says this is a deplorable crime. we have worked with police to support their investigation. >> here we have an app that basically puts women in predator's cars. >> reporter: i meet these attorneys at their office on san francisco's embarcadero where they are working dozens of rideshare assault cases. they say uber and lyft have to do a better job checking out their drivers. the rideshares rely on the dmv and a third party back ground company. there is no face-to-face

meeting, no drug test. >> companies don't require to even talk on the phone, let alone a face-to-face interview. >> i think also with the fingerprinting, if you're a driving, you know if your fingerprint is on file and that matters. >> reporter: that's what happens at taxi companies. fingerprints, drug tests, cameras and all the cars that need the clouds so managers can see what's happening. safety manager corey lamb tells me no fly wheel driver has assaulted a passenger in the past year. >> not one. >> five years in >> not one. >> ten years? >> not one. i've been here 13. a driver has never assaulted a passenger. >> reporter: a lyft spokesperson said he would get back with me, but he has not. and uber declined an interview, but e-mailed there is nothing more important than the safety of the riders we serve. that's why we've doubled on,
