environmentalists say texas is failing to protect people there from chemical fires and explosions. investigators in pennsylvania are working to figure out what caused a deadly fire at a chicken farm. >> fire officials say around 28,000 chickens were killed in the blaze. the birds were housed in a 300-foot-long building which burned. no farm workers or firefighters were hurt. the agriculture department has ended a controversial program that resulted in the deaths of thousands of cats. >> the program was started in 1982 and involved infecting the cats with a disease which eventually meant they had to be put down. the usda announced yesterday that the program is being discontinued. 14 cats that were going to be infected are now being put up for adoption. new details are surfacing in last month's crash of that ethiopian airlines boeing 737 max that killed all 157 people on board. >> "the wall street journal" is reporting the pilots had initially followed boeing's emergency procedures, but still couldn't regain control of the plane.

now the company is reporting another setback. here's abc's david kerley.these grounded, may not be available for several more weeks. boeing, which planned to ask for approval of its software upgrade last friday, is now asking for more time. >> we're working with customers and regulators around the world to restore faith in our industry. >> reporter: boeing says it will demonstrate it's addressed all certification requirements, but will now ask for approval in the coming weeks. that could be up to four more weeks. the faa saying it won't approve the software until it is satisfied. the software will make it more difficult for an anti-stall system in the new jet to misfire and easier for a pilot to regain control. that system is suspected in two crashes of maxes in the past five months in which the jets nosed down and up dramatically. american and southwest, who together own nearly 60 aircraft,

now," the security breach at president trump's mar-a-lago club. >> the investigation is now under way into how a woman got through several layers of security, including the secret service, while the president was in town. also this morning, a break in the case of a music star's murder. police say they caught the man who gunned down nipsey hussle. overnight we're learning they met with the alleged getaway driver. one person dead and two others fighting for their lives after a massive explosion at a chemical plant near the neighborhood rocked by another chemical plant fire just last month. has mother's day come early? you won't believe the incredible gift this 13-year-old gave his mom and what he traded in to get it for her. it's wednesday, april 3rd.

good morning, everyone, happy hump day. it's nice to have the lady in white next to me. >> uh-huh. >> looking good. >> thank you. >> very spring. >> very shady. >> i'm not being shady. >> come on, spring. >> you're willing it into existence because we've had some chilly temperatures. >> i am. we begin this half hour with the arrest at mar-a-lago. a woman brazenly getting by several layers of security to make it deep inside president trump's exclusive members-only club. >> the 32-year-old chinese national was carrying four cellphones, a laptop, and a thumb drive infected with malware when she was finally stopped. abc's martha raddatz has the details. >> reporter: the major security breach at mar-a-lago while the president was in florida. it was just after noon on saturday. the woman, yujing zhang, walking up to a secret service agent, presenting two passports as i.d. authorities say zhang told the agent she was there to go to the pool.

according to court documents the agent checked the i.d. and handed zhang off to mar-a-lago security. they couldn't find her on their membership rolls but there was another person named zhang who belonged to the club. according to the complaint, due to a potential language barrier issue, mar-a-lago believed her to be the relative of that member. they let her in. a valet drove her to the main reception area in a golf cart, passing three more secret service agents. prosecutors say zhang was finally stopped by a receptionist who asked her several times why she was there. according to the complaint, zhang finally responded that she was there for a united nations chinese-american association event later in the evening. the receptionist knew this event does not exist. at that point the secret service took over. authorities say zhang claimed her chinese friend charles told her to travel from shanghai to attempt to speak with a member

of the president's family about chinese and american foreign economic relations. police say she was carrying four cellphones, a laptop, an external hard drive, and a thumb drive. authorities determined preliminarily that the thumb drive contained malicious malware. there's still many questions about who this woman is and why she was at the resort, and especially about the thumb drive, which authorities say contained that malware which can infect computers with a virus, but also many questions remain about how she was able to make it onto that secure property even if the president wasn't there at the time and he was golfing. that is where he spent the weekend. i'm martha raddatz for abc news in washington. >> a stunning story there. the house oversight committee has issued the first subpoenas stemming from its

investigation into white house security clearances. >> lawmakers voted along party lines to compel the former white house personnel security director to testify. karl kline was the boss of the whistle-blower who told the committee administration officials had overruled career employees in 25 cases granting clearances to people who were initially denied over concerns such as foreign influence and criminal conduct. breaking overnight, history made in chicago. the first black female and openly gay mayor has been elected. 56-year-old lori lightfoot is a former federal prosecutor who's never been elected to public office before last night. she's promising to fight city hall corruption and help chicago's lower and working classes. lightfoot will take office may 20th. she defeated toni preckwinkle, who's had a decades-long political career. four former penn state fraternity members have been sentenced for the 2017 death of pledge timothy piazza. all four of the young men

pleaded guilty to a variety of hazing and conspiracy charges. three were sentenced to jail time from 30 days to nine months behind bars. the fourth was given house arrest. piazza was a 19-year-old sophomore who died just over two years ago following an alcohol-fueled fraternity event. investigators said he was given 18 drinks in just over an hour and 20 minutes. at least three other former chapter members still face trial in connection with piazza's death. dramatic new details in the murder of rapper nipsey hussle. his alleged killer is behind bars. police captured suspect eric holder yesterday about 20 miles outside los angeles. detectives say holder is the man in surveillance video obtained by tmz seen speaking with hussle sunday before opening fire. sources say the woman believed to have driven holder's getaway car met with detectives but has not been charged. police say hussle and holder knew each other but didn't explain how. they said the men argued a number of times sunday but haven't given details about the

>> reporter: a terrifying chemical plant blast leaving one person dead and several communities outside houston on edge. >> all units be advised, we have multiple injured employees at the kmco refinery. >> reporter: flames and thick black smoke pouring from tanks. the incident beginning just after 11:00 when officials say isobutylene, a highly flammable chemical, ignited. >> boom, boom! >> they told us to get out of the plant, there was a leak. we were evacuating and it blew up. we had to crawl underneath the fence to get out. >> reporter: life flight choppers quickly moving in. >> i'm with one patient, he's got second and third-degree burns to the face and hands. >> reporter: one worker is dead, two more in critical condition. the blaze setting off the plant's automated water system. atr: allts illexplos within a one-mile radius ordered

to shelter in place. students kept in schools. air conditioning units in those buildings turned off. other adults and children chemicals in the complex that are concerning to us as well so we're actively monitoring that. >> reporter: this comes days after a fire at a different facility nearby burned on and off for days. at one point officials detecting toxic benzene in the air. the epa now monitoring air quality for this incident as well, but so far saying, despite this thick smoke, they have not detected anything of concern. this company has a history of osha violations and is facing a civil trial over allegations it violated clean air and water laws. the company has apologized for this latest incident and the epa has been using a plane to monitor the air quality, and they are telling residents it is safe. marcus moore, abc news, crosby, texas. >> our thanks to marcus there in texas. two of the most well-known defendants in the college admissions scandal are due in court today. >> actresses felicity huffman and lori loughlin will appear in boston federal court for a preliminary hearing. some of the 33 parents in the

jews came out for the funeral of a 95-year-old rabbi. two nypd officers suffered minor injuries during that very large procession. one was struck by a vehicle, suffering a leg injury. another officer was struck by a drone. just so many people out there on the street. and federal health officials are accelerating their efforts to find the cause of that paralyzing illness that struck more than 200 children last year. >> the disease, called afm, reminded many of polio, but with far fewer cases. the head of infectious diseases at national institutes of health has written a report. he says he can't assume the number of cases will always be this low. several agencies are now working on the disease, but there is still no cure. a lawsuit is building against a hospital in san diego over the discovery of hidden cameras in operating rooms that recorded female patients. >> up to 1,800 patients may have been recorded without their knowledge or consent during medical procedures, including surgeries and giving birth. here's abc's eva pilgrim.

>> reporter: a few years after going into the hospital for an emergency c-section, carla jones was stunned to learn her child's birth had been captured on a hidden camera. >> i was mortified at the idea that there was video or images of me in that extremely vulnerable and exposed moment. >> reporter: a new lawsuit filed by 81 women alleges cameras in three operating rooms at sharp grossmont hospital recorded some 1,800 patients between july 2012 and june 2013. the story broken by our san diego affiliate kgtv. this image obtained by abc news shows the view from one of those undercover cameras. >> there's images floating around somewhere potentially viewed, could be viewed in the future by others without my permission. >> reporter: the hospital says the motion-activated cameras were part of an investigation into missing drugs. >> even after they confronted the employee and they had identified the source of the missing drugs, in their mind, they continued to operate the cameras for two additional months.

>> reporter: the hospital tells abc news they have not used those surveillance methods again and that they regret that their efforts to ensure medication security may have caused distress. eva pilgrim, abc news, new york. >> our thanks to eva. a mom came to the rescue when she saw a mountain lion attacking her 7-year-old son. >> the boy was playing in his family's backyard home in british columbia when the animal attacked. the boy's mother heard loud bangs when the cougar jumped off their metal fence. she then saw the animal dragging her son away. >> i turn the corner. and i see this animal on my child. and i -- at first i didn't even know what it was, it just -- i -- then i knew it was a cougar. and so i just -- i leaped onto the cougar. >> that cougar was biting down on the boy's arm, so mom pried the animal's mouth open, the cat let go then took off. the little boy is recovering with some gashes to his head, neck, and arm, and he has his mom to thank for saving his

of timothy piazza. joshua kurczewski, joseph sala, michael bonatucci, luke visser sentenced for piazza's 2017 death after the 19-year-old died following an alcohol-fueled hazing ritual. sala will serve three months' house arrest and over two years probation. the others could spend up to six months behind bars. kurczewski dealt the harshest punishment of the four among 26 members of the fraternity charged in the case. it took 12 hours to call 911 after finding the 19-year-old unconscious following a night of forced drinking which ended with piazza falling head-first down a flight of stairs. >> we are committed to holding every responsible individual accountable.

>> reporter: a furious legal battle followed piazza's death five of the members. many are still facing a slewudi tampering with evidence, hazing.end they are yet to be sentenced. >> they committed serious crimes. now they have to deal with it. >> reporter: overnight piazza's parents telling abc news they hope their son's case will serve as a warning to others and make students think twice before hazing anyone. >> again, the sentencing phase is not over. several frat members who pleaded guilty are expected -- their sentences are expected to be handed down in the next few months. >> we'll be watching what those sentences are. obviously this is not the only case like this involving hazing that we see that has awful, just heartbreaking endings that impact so many families in schools. to see at least in these cases so far nine months in jail, the harshest penalty so far. other than that, others got probation and house arrest.

you really want to see sentences that make people think twice about doing this on college campuses. turning to the security breach at mar-a-lago, a woman from china arrested after bypassing secret service at the palm beach resort over the wee a in town. >> according to the complaint the woman was carrying four cellphones, a laptop, and a thumb drive infected with malware. she showed two chinese passports as i.d. and said she was there to use the pool. security mistakenly believed she was the daughter of a club member. they say once inside she changed her story saying she was there for a certain event but no such event was taking place. president trump is warning his party not to run away from health care if they want to win in 2020. >> the president told gop lawmakers last night they will get clobbered if they don't confront health care and vowed republicans will champion the issue of covering people with pre-existing conditions. >> the president talked about waiting until after next year's election to unveil the replacement for obamacare. abc's jonathan karl has more.
