graduate and start his life, and it's too soon for any young person to be taken off this earth. >> investigators are trying to figure out how the bridge carried an electrical current. this week our building a better bay area series is focused on the ride sharing industry and drivers face risks on the job every day. now the family of one uber driver is suffering after he was killed on the job. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard reconnected with the loved ones left behind. i know a lot of people are praying for us. >> reporter: sadat barakzi is missing his friend waheed etimad. he worked as a translate for for u.s. troops. during that time he was shot and wounded by the taliban. >> in a sense he's an american hero. he served the american people. >> reporter: etimad started driving for uber. but on february 3rd, he was

killed on the job in a horrific head-on crash on highway 101 in san francisco caused by a wrongway driver. >> my mom remembers my dad e dae day and she cries for him. >> reporter: 14-year-old yahya is stepping up to help his siblings. a go fund me account has now raised $327,000 for family. >> our main purpose is to get them a house. >> reporter: the family is still waiting to hear from uber about what can of financial help they may be entitled to. uber offers additional driver injury protection at a cost of about 4 cents per mile offering survivor benefits for families up to $150,000 if you are killed. it's unclear if waheed etimad was enrolled. >> they have been in contact with us. >> reporter: this was a horribly tragic incident and our hearts continue to be with the driver's

charges. their attorney says the couple's son took his s.a.t. without help and the parents were unaware it had been altered. the daughter was reported as a soccer player is also expected in court today. so is elizabeth and manuel henriquez. elizabeth, her daughter and the test procter gloated about cheating and getting away with it. packaged food entrepreneur peter sartorio of menlo park accused of paying for the college entrance exam cheating scheme for his daughter. a criminal attorney doug rappaport provided legal analysis of this case and says people who plead guilty generally receive lesser sentences. >> my guess is a judge will be sentencing parents somewhere between six months and probably two years depending on the extent of the conduct. >> reporter: prosecutors have not charged any children in the

of harming a teenager is charged with 30 counts of lewd acts on a child. father david mendoza-vela made his first appearance yesterday. prosecutors say the alleged abuse took place at st. john's in san lorenzo. he was transferred to corpus christi church in fremont in 2016. mendoza-vela has served as a priest in alameda county since the year 2013. the diocese of oakland is now encouraging anyone who may have been victimized to call the alameda county d.a.'s office. in the east bay a total mess at an oakland school after an act of vandalism. and now the community is stepping in to help pay for the cleanup. teachers and students discovered the damage when they arrived at manzanita yesterday morning. windows broken, they smashed computers and also broke up a toilet. the librarian was one of the first to discover the destruction. >> the hallway was two feet of debris pulled off shelves.

make polk street safer for bicyclists. a bill to allow homeless to sleep in their cars is being pitched and made it out of committee. a recent survey showed one in five community college students in california have been homeless within the past year. how depressing is that. we are spotlighting transportation in the south bay. >> finding parking around school is difficult and a new app is connecting drivers with private parking spaces. about 20,000 san jose state students drive to school but sjsu only has about 5,000 parking spaces on its main campus. that led to the park stash app. think airbnb for parking. it matches commuters with people who rent out their driveways.

>> i have missed classes and my exams. i wanted a solution to my own problem. >> the app concerns some residents of san jose's neighborhoods right near campus. at least one neighbor shared their concerns off camera. they include security and liability. not all the neighbors are onboard with the idea. >> we'll see how that goes. this morning a 2-year-old boy in minnesota has a new wheelchair, and it's all thanks to some very nice high school students. >> this is great. the robotics team at farmington high built him a power wheelchair. his parents couldn't afford to get him one because it was just too much for them. the students put their skills to work. they built the chair from a big wheel. he was born with a genetic condition that makes it hard for him to move his body. his mom says the chair helps her boy explore like he has never been able to before.

take a look at the san mateo bridge if you're headed to foster city, the flat section. you're looking at about an 18-minute drive from 880 to 101. let's head down to the south bay, highway 87 past the s.a.p. center. the taillights are headed north to san jose and the airport. ominous looking skies. we do have this accident in milpitas. it is still out there. behind that southbound 880 before highway 237 we have reports of an accident there as well. you make your way to san jose. netflix is sending emails to customers. did you get one? i did this week, reminding you they are increasing their prices and they take effect this month. netflix announced the price hikes in january. the price of the basic plan is going up to $9 a month.
