>> it is wednesday. i'm happy. i'm happy everybody at home is watching the show, and there is a lot of excitement for th that "avengers: end game." the trailer dropped yesterday and has more than 11 million views. >> the rush to get tickets so fast so furious websites crashed leading to fans -- leading fans to tweet these, me with my phone while getting my tickets to go see "avengers: endgame" and a error message. a lot of people pushing refresh. >> there was a lot of funny memes out there. we'll have much more on that ahead. first, we begin with that breaking news overnight about the ethiopian airlines crash and what happened in the cockpit in those final moments. there is a new report that is saying the pilots initially followed procedures to correct that malfunction before the plane went down. david kerley starts us off. has the latest. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this morning we are still awaiting the ethiopian report,

but this report suggests that the pilots did follow procedure turning off a system but for some reason turned it back on before losing control, crashing and killing all on board. it's "the wall street journal" now reporting to us that they have talked to people familiar with the investigative report which is based on the black box data, and they say when an anti-stall system engaged and nosed down the jet liner, as we found out, the pilots did follow -- we saw this in the simulator, the procedure that they followed. that is to flip two switches down, shut off the electricity that noses down the aircraft and go to a wheel and manually level out the plane. but for some unknown reason or at least unreported reason, they decided to turn that system back on. the electricity back on and try and use the autopilot again to control the aircraft. they lost control and crashed. now, boeing has a software fix they were expecting to submit last friday. that's now been delayed for as possibly as many as four weeks or longer and that means the two major airlines, american and southwest in this country that fly the maxes, that are still

grounded, the entire fleet around the world will have to cancel nearly 200 flights today alone, cecilia. we continue to await for details from the ethiopians. >> a lot of frustrated people out there. david kerley, thank you. we turn to washington now where overnight, president trump went on the attack during a free wheeling speech to republicans. he now seems to be backtracking on everything from shutting down the border to health care. he's also going head on after a new target. his likely 2020 opponent, former vice president joe biden. jonathan karl has the latest. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. donald trump is looking ahead to the 2020 campaign taking aim at the most high-profile potential candidate, former vice president biden. at a fund-raiser overnight for congressional republicans, president trump took aim at joe biden. >> we're going into the war with some socialists and it looks like the only non-sort of heavy socialist -- he's being taken care of pretty well by the socialists. they got to him.

our former vice president, he's -- i was going to call him -- i don't know him well. i was going to say, welcome to the world, joe. you having a good time, joe? >> reporter: that was a clear reference to allegations biden now faces of inappropriate conduct from several women. more than a dozen women have accused trump of sexual misconduct, but that didn't stop him from going directly at biden. >> i said, general, give me a kiss. i felt like joe biden, but i meant it. >> reporter: allegations of inappropriate behavior directed at donald trump span years, both before and during his bid for the white house. the president has denied all of them. in his speech, the president also hit his signature campaign promise. [ chanting ] but after threatening to close down the southern border last week, a sudden reversal. the president seems to have changed his mind. >> i really wanted to close it.

but now mexico is saying, no, no, no, first time in decades, we will not let anybody get through. and they've apprehended over a thousand people today at the southern border, their southern border and they're bringing them back into their country. >> reporter: so the president is claiming a major change in mexico's policy since he threatened to shut down the border just last week. but we can find no evidence of any major change in the number of migrants that mexico is detaining over the last several days. cecilia. >> yeah, jon. mexico says they are basically doing what they have been doing, but it's not just the border. the president seems to be backtracking on health care, basically backing off this plan to introduce a republican replacement before 2020. >> reporter: he now says that the republican plan would be voted on after the election. he is saying this because he would like to do it after a big electoral victory when he is

re-elected, when republicans win election, the president says. >> jon karl at the white house for us this morning. jon, thank you. michael. >> thank you. now to that startling security breach at mar-a-lago while president trump was in florida over the weekend. a woman from china is under arrest after talking her way past secret service agents allegedly carrying a thumb drive with malware. chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz has more in washington. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, michael. yujing zhang who is in her early 30s remains in custody charged this morning with making false statements to federal law enforcement and unlawfully entering a restricted zone. there was a secret service protective zone around mar-a-lago all weekend with layers of security, agents and signs warning that the area was restricted. but according to court documents, yujing zhang got in anyway. it was just after noon on saturday, the president golfing

nearby, when authorities say she presented two chinese passports to an agent as i.d. and said she was there to go to the pool. the agent passed her information to mar-a-lago security to verify she was on an access list. while the court documents make clear zhang easily conversed in english, authorities say due to a potential language barrier issue, mar-a-lago believed her to be the relative of a member of the club who was also named zhang. a valet then drove her to the main reception area in a golf cart. prosecutors say zhang made it through another secret service checkpoint, magnetometers and more agents before she was finally stopped by a receptionist who asked zhang why she was there. according to the complaint, zhang finally responded that she was there for a united nations chinese-american association event later in the evening. the receptionist knew this event did not exist.

at that point, the secret service took over. when they say she claimed her chinese friend, charles, told her to travel from shanghai to attempt to speak with a member of the president's family about chinese and american foreign economic relations. and investigators are still looking at that thumb drive which they say contained, quote, malicious malware, along with four cell phones, a laptop and an external hard drive, but what zhang did not have, robin, despite saying she wanted to go to the pool, a swim suit, robin. >> all right, martha, thank you. now to history being made in chicago overnight, lori lightfoot elected mayor becoming the first african-american woman and openly gay person to hold the city's highest office. our chief national affairs correspondent tom llamas has the latest on this. good morning, tom. >> reporter: robin, good morning. both historical and it was a landslide. in a city known for its back room politics, the win was a jolt to chicago's political machine. lori lightfoot, a former federal

prosecutor who never held elected office ran on a platform of cracking down on government corruption and helping lower income neighborhoods. she will be the city's first female black mayor taking office at a time of high tension between the police and its black population, which makes up one-third of the city, and a group moving out of the city in recent years, due in part to violence and housing issues and she will be the first openly gay mayor after beating out another black female candidate and earlier bill daley of the legendary chicago political family who served as chief of staff to president obama. the historic moment was not lost on lightfoot last night. >> i remember something martin luther king said when i was very young. faith, he said, is taking the first step when you can't see the staircase. well, we couldn't see the whole staircase when we started this journey. but we had faith, an abiding faith in the city, its people

and its future. so we took that first step. >> reporter: now lightfoot faces big challenges ahead, including a pension crisis that's ongoing, and though the murder rate has come down recently, crime still remains a major issue in chicago. guys. >> one of my favorite quotes from martin luther king. >> very powerful. >> it was. she came out of nowhere. >> came out of nowhere. landslide and never held elected office so it's impressive. >> thanks, tom. okay. now we turn to the latest on that deadly chemical plant explosion outside of houston killing one person and injuring two others. it's the second major plant fire in the area in just weeks. abc's marcus moore is on the scene in crosby, texas with more. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: cecilia, good morning to you. the roadways around the plant are still closed this morning, but that massive fire is out, and the powerful explosion killed one employee at the chemical plant in crosby and critically injured two other workers. this morning, we know that the particular plant has been the

focus of osha violations in the past, and the current company that owns it, they are facing a lawsuit. the county suing the company saying that it has violated the clean air and water laws. the company has said -- has apologized for this most recent incident and they say they are cooperating as they investigate -- try to prevent this from happening again, but the top environmental official here in harris county says that this particular plant has been a thorn in harris county's side for years. michael? >> all right. thank you so much, marcus. now we turn to the latest on the shooting death of grammy-nominated rapper nipsey hussle. a suspect is now in custody and overnight the rapper's longtime girlfriend broke her silence. abc's adrienne bankert has more. >> reporter: overnight actress lauren london, the love of nipsey hussle's life and mother of his child addresses the rapper's death for the first time writing on instagram, i am completely lost. i've lost my best friend. we are lost without you, babe.

i have no words. >> nipsey's death has sent shock waves across the city and across this globe. >> reporter: london's heartbreaking tribute comes as authorities arrest this man. >> there he is, there he is. >> reporter: 29-year-old eric holder, the suspected killer of the grammy-nominated artist. you police say the murder was not a gang fight, but a personal dispute. >> mr. holder walked up on multiple occasions and engaged in a conversation with nipsey, subsequently came back armed with a handgun striking and killing nipsey hussle. >> reporter: the suspected getaway driver turned herself in to authorities. she was not arrested and she left freely tuesday night. sources tell abc news that the woman is saying little to investigators for fear of retaliation. and in the same place that hussle was murdered to prevent the chaos from large crowds earlier this week, police have imposed a curfew at the memorial site to allow mourners to pay their respects peacefully. >> you might as well call him the president of the hood then,

this morning, a judge handing down the first sentences in the death of 19-year-old penn state fraternity pledge, tim piazza. more than two years after an alcohol-fueled frat party three of the former penn state frat brothers luke visser, michael bonatucci and joshua kurczewski now going behind bars. their sentences ranging from one month to nine months. all of them pleading guilty to hazing and conspiracy to commit hazing. piazza's parents speaking to abc news overnight. >> you know, these guys, they committed serious crimes and, you know, now they have to deal with it. so we're really all about making college experiences safer at this point. >> reporter: and we know this morning that the pennsylvania attorney general's office which has been prosecuting this case has obtained a large number of guilty pleas. more sentences are expected in the next few months, guys. >> all right, gio. thank you very much. and i can remember when tim's

parents came here to our studio and they have -- they have not given up in wanting to make this a message for others. >> and possibly save some lives. >> yes, indeed. and now we're going to turn to a record-breaking day for the marvel universe dropping the brand-new "avengers: endgame" trailer tuesday and it broke records at box offices becoming the biggest first-day ticket seller on fandango in just six hours, and some other things broke too. the site crashed. >> thanos took out half the universe that included most i.t. departments because the websites didn't work. so amc theatres, website and app crashed. fandango, if you go there to try to buy your tickets you were put in a queue for an hour. why were they not ready? we reached out to the companies but the theaters, it was their issue. they couldn't keep up with demand. fandango tells us straight

crushed the previous record held by "star wars: the force awakens." they say, we have never seen anything like this. it is groundbreaking. amc says the traffic was ten times their normal amount and double their previous record. if you go by the numbers this is the most anticipated movie we've ever seen. >> i think i already know the answer to this. but when the site crashed how did the fans react? >> very calmly. to have their children's standardized test scores corrected and/or bribe coaches in order to ensure their children got into the colleges of their choice. judgment day for many of the parents named in "operation varsity blues." on tuesday evening actress lori loughlin seen here smiling signing autographs after arriving in boston with her husband mossimo giannulli, and it's expected to be a full house today. loughlin among the 15 parents set to appear later this afternoon in boston federal court. among them real estate executives, a lawyer, doctor and a litany of ceos. for their part loughlin and giannulli stand accused of paying $500,000 in bribes to get their two daughters into usc. >> this is olivia jade. >> reporter: one of them 19-year-old social media influencer and youtube star olivia jade, seen here in the passenger seat with sister isabella last week in los angeles. her first public appearance since the scandal broke. also set to appear, "desperate housewives" star felicity

huffman who allegedly paid $15,000 to have an s.a.t. proctor correct her daughter's answers. >> when your friends tell you to lion your resume, you 100% do not do it. >> reporter: marketing ceo jane buckingham is expected today accused of paying $35,000 to have an a.c.t. proctor take her son's exam, even submitting a writing sample. her son, jack, apologized immediately following the news of the alleged bribe, telling "the hollywood reporter," i am upset that i was unknowingly involved. his mother is reportedly working with authorities on a possible deal. some of the parents insist they did absolutely nothing wrong. like dr. gregory colburn and his wife amy who are accused of using $25,000 of company stock to cheat on their son's entrance exam. their lawyer tells us they are innocent of these charges. meanwhile, we still don't know the identity of the mystery parent who prosecutors say paid $6.5 million to get his or her

child into an elite school. and while some of the parents have been fighting back through their attorneys, the prosecutors have been putting pressure on the parents saying, look. either cooperate or face more charges. the grand jury has until april 11th to hand down additional charges. cecelia. >> thanks linsey davis. let's bring in dan abrams and former federal prosecutor sunny hostin. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> big day in court today. so much outrage over this case still. what do you guys think happens? will we see pleas? >> i think you might see a plea. this is really a pretty pro-forma proceeding. they're going to let them know what the charges are, potential sentences. some of the other defendants in the case thus far have not even entered a plea. if they enter a plea, it will be to say not guilty and basically the legal proceedings effectively begin today. >> i would agree with that. i mean we know that some of them appeared on friday, last friday and it was very, vy justun i don'thinwe'll sehing

spectacular today.ese two high- that everybody is talking about, how are they different from each other, and is one in more legal jeopardy than the other? >> well, you know, we're talking about different monetary amounts. with felicity huffman, we're talking about $15,000 and someone taking an exam. the other group, i think, lori loughlin's $500,000 and so under the sentencing guidelines that are just discretionary, there is a bit of a difference there, but there was so much outrage here that i think everyone is sort of grouped together. we're talking about 50 parents, 50 defendants that were involved in this. so i don't know that you can just separate the actions based on the money because they're all charged with the same type of conduct. >> they are charged with the same crimes. but i do think that when it comes to sentencing it will be very different. i mean, as sunny points out, it's not just that it's $15,000 for felicity huffman and $500,000 for lori loughlin,

which matters when you're talking about fraud. fraud is about money and the amount of money matters when you're talking about fraud but it's also that she did it twice. lori loughlin did it twice. felicity huffman did it only once and didn't do it the second time. >> although contemplated doing it a second time but didn't complete the action. >> and that will -- all of that will help in terms of sentencing. so i do think in terms of what kind of prison time they're facing, you're talking about pretty different scenarios. >> prosecutors reportedly, they want you to cooperate or face more charges. so someone supposedly discussing the deal, but what would a deal look like? >> that's what i can't make sense of actually because i was in the business of making deals with defendants. and when you look at this case, rick singer who is the mastermind, and he made millions of dollars, he has already pled guilty in cooperating. the yale coach that accepted the bribe, he has already cooperated. the person that was taking the exams has cooperated. these are the little fish at this point, the parents, so what do they have to offer? will they offer up other parents? >> accepting responsibility and not getting more charges, meaning i think they're holding

the second crash of a 737 max raising even more questions this morning. "the wall street journal" is reporting that people familiar with the investigative report which still hasn't been released say that the pilots did initially follow the emergency procedures, but then for some unexplained or unreported reason, reversed themselves as the jetliner was nosing up and down dramatically. we visited a simulator to see that procedure. if it misfires and sends the nose down the pilots are supposed to shut off the system. the electricity to it and use a manual wheel turning it by hand to level out the jet. well, the pilot as apparently shut off the switches but then for some reason they turned it back on and tried to control the aircraft with the autopilot but lost control and crashed. this all as boeing continues to work on a software fix. it's been delayed by several weeks. it could be mid-may before this fleet has a chance to get back in the air. robin. >> so again the fleet is still on the ground here in the u.s. >> yes.

experts? >> reporter: it's the country's largest ever college admissions scandal. millions of dollars allegedly paid for bribes and cheating on tests. but some college cheaters applying to college or are already there can pay much less. it's called contract cheating. >> contract cheating has grown a great deal over the past ten years. students are willing to use internet sites, family members, friends. >> reporter: it's a global business worth hundreds of millions of dollars according to industry estimates. advertising on social media. >> it is quite covert. it's designed not to be able to be investigated very effectively. >> reporter: "gma" did a simple internet search. buy college admission essay. countless options popped up. some writers even submitted bids to us in realtime while we were searching. for less than 50 bucks, we purchased this online, a fully written college essay. then we did a little experiment. we gave these four former admissions officers and directors five essays to read. one we bought and four others from real students who got into colleges including the ivy league.

could they spot the fraud? all right. gang, this is the moment of truth. i need you to put your hand on the one you believe that we bought online. hold it up so i can see that number please. >> we all did. >> would you be surprised if i told you every single one of you is wrong? >> no. >> but listen to why our fraudulent essay got by them. the topic, a public service trip to help poor people abroad. losing myself in the service of others, it read. >> honestly it was probably the worst essay and that's why i thought it couldn't be the fake one. >> there are definitely schools where this would not have flown. >> they wrote about a topic that a lot of people write about because they think it's what admissions wants to hear, and it isn't. >> reporter: they point out the limitations of our experiment. >> i'm looking for does the essay hold up with the rest of the application. so the challenge really here for me was that i have no idea what's in the rest of the application.

>> something just utterly fake and submitted off the internet, agreed, if it didn't jive with the rest of the details in the file, it would stand out. >> is there anything that's just a glaring red flag? >> i think language that doesn't sound like a teenager would write it. >> reporter: if the teenager didn't write it -- >> parental tinkering. that is the most prevalent example and the question is often, can you tell when a parent got their hands on it? and, you know, it's difficult. >> reporter: the current college admissions scandal could spark reform. >> i'm really excited about the conversation that now is being forced. i think it will resolve in positive changes. >> advise two different groups, the students and parents when it comes to that application. >> be your authentic self. >> this is really not about the parents. the focus should be on helping your child successfully manage about how do you stand out when it comes to choosing a topic?

>> the only way you can do this is by being yourself. you're a 17-year-old kid. act like one. don't try to be the 24-year-old graduate you want to be one day. please stop writing about your humanitarian trip. that's their advice. we get so tired of reading about some service project that you did. tell us who you are, this is the only chance you have. s.a.t. scores, grades, are all one thing. this is one chance to show them who you are. >> that's the one good thing coming out of this scandal. we are all talking about the changes that need to happen. i love this piece, thanks. michael, over to you. >> thank you, cecilia. now to a popular workout craze that people can't get enough of, high intensity interval training or h.i.i.t. it's very physical. with this type of work out, how do you keep your knees and joints safe? let's take a look. >> let's rock 'n' roll and get warmed up. >> reporter: high intensity interval training also known as hiit is the hot workout class that gets you sweating. >> it works your heart rate and

cardiovascular system and we're talking about heart health, your muscles and your bone density. it's working all of that. they're fast, efficient and fun. >> reporter: when done right it's an a-plus workout. without care it can be dangerous. >> i tell my patients you have to watch out for causing shoulder and knee injuries because there's a lot of high impact. >> reporter: how do you do hiit without getting hurt? >> we warm up properly but we have to cool down even better. it's important to do a proper warm-up. take your time with it. also stretch and roll out. your body is connected from head to toe. the more you can actually prep it, the better you'll perform in a hiit class. >> reporter: stop and listen to your body. >> we want to work in a pain-free range of motion. find the range that works for you. if your knee starts to hurt, pull back a little. >> it's very common to feel some pain a day or two after an exercise. the pain shouldn't be persistent. there shouldn't be swelling of joints. there shouldn't be any buckling or instability.

>> reporter: and finally, speak up. >> it's important you talk to your instructor if you have any knee injuries or limitations. when you let the coach or instructor know you set yourself up for success right from the get-go. >> you crushed it. [ applause ] >> speaking of crushing it, we're joined by jeannette jenkins who is the creator of the hollywood trainer club. you're here with a few friends and you're going to show us some moves. >> yes. >> a lot of people go to workout class and feel a lot of pressure to work out harder or work out more intensely but that could lead to a lot of injuries. >> most definitely. >> what is the difference between high intensity and high impact? >> well, right here we have the high impact burpee and jamie is doing the low impact. you notice she has both feet on the ground so you don't have that impact. we get that high intensity where you have that perceived exertion between seven to ten, and she's getting the heart rate up and still working the

muscles without as much impact on the joints. >> i got to be honest with you, my heart rate is up watching you do all that. another thing that -- nobody wants to seem vain when they are in the gym. >> why not? >> but you say you should use the mirror. >> yeah, absolutely. check yourself out once in a while. but more importantly you got to check your form and technique so as you see, our friend jamie is not looking in the mirror and she's doing a dead lift with a rounded back. so, jamie, come on back and check your form in the mirror and by keeping a long extended spine she's going to correct her form and look in the mirror and make sure because basically we want to just decrease injuries so it's easy, i've been training 30 years and it's easy to just be tired, fatigued and have your brain wander, right, while you're working out and it's easy to get injured. >> use the mirror, just don't be in it like this, yay. that's not what you do. >> that's good too. >> speaking of injuries, knee injuries can be common in a gym. >> yes. >> what's the best thing to do?

>> you want to make sure you're doing strength training before you even start doing high impact, high intensity so you want to make sure the joints are nice and strong before you start impacting them. so as you can see, kenta is doing a jump squat. that repetitive motion whether running or sprinting or doing jumps is going to put more strain on the joints so adding a strength training routine where you do it at least two to three times a week to make sure your joints are ready for hiit training. >> hiit training, that's right. love books. it's also our daughter's favorite strategy to push bedtime back because she knows it's very hard to say no, just one more book. >> how about with grandma and grandpa. >> they always give in. my husband and i are much more like precise about saying, nope, 7:30, lights out. my parents are much more easily persuadable, of course, you want one more story, of course, by one more story you mean every one in the peppa pig book. >> you're talking about 12 species endangered all around the word. what motivated you to write this. >> two thing, one, i kept hearing from kid, my nieces and nephews and other kids i met while working on my other books that one of the issues they care most about are animals, animal welfare, saving endangered species and i remember when i was a kid, the first issue that i really felt galvanized by was trying to save animals so i wrote this book for kids today and also because when i was a

kid i wish i had this book to talk about the animals that captured my heart and imagination like elephants and also so that i really knew what i could do to save them. >> do your little ones have favorites? >> my daughter loves sharks so she was very happy that whale sharks are included and she tells everyone who will listen that we kill 100 million sharks every year which we do. >> wow. >> and why she thinks that's awful which it is. my son kind of seems to have a different favorite animal every week. this week it's tigers and he loves that tigers are one of the only cats that swim. he thinks that's very fun so now in the bathtub he pretends he a tiger. >> the illustrations are so beautiful. >> gianna did an extraordinary job and shared her talents. >> she brings them to life. you could write about anything. i know, see that. you ul write about anything. what is it about children's books? what is it that drives you here? >> well, i think children's

books are really kind of the first ways in which we either expand or limit a child's imagination, kind of what we say is possible for them as themselves, in the world, and while i had kind of known that academically when i became a parent i really could feel that and understand that because i watched it happen in our own home and so i'm just so thankful to be able to share stories and information that i hope are empowering for kid us because i think that's what we should be doing for all our kids. >> i appreciate that. this is all about empowerment and another trouble with children, social media, and there's negative and positive and you've had to deal with that too. some backlash and criticism. what is your message? how do you deal with that. >> i think bullying is just a challenge that we all have to reckon with candidly and it's something that predates social media and it's something that has just found sadly like another vehicle and venue on social media so i think you

thought only as parents but as aunts because i know you have nieces and nephews, you know, as teachers, grandparent, you have to ensure that our kids know that they can always talk to us, that it's always important that they say like what they're feeling, what they're experiencing and that we teach them how to be brave and resilient and also kind so that even if they're receiving ugliness any never return split that's what you have learned.
