creating a traffic hazard and traffic jam, too. >> no cars were hit and no one was hurt and these are pictures of what has fallen from february 7th and today. >> mark levine whose district includes sonoma county sums up with this statement. like the bridge itself, my confidence in the structural integrity of the richmond-san rafael bridge is falling. sglp how is traffic right now? >> dan, as you can see, traffic is flowing here. the richmond san rafael bridge but this was not the case several hours ago. we did hear back from cal trans and this is what they had to say. the result of work that took place last night. the falling concrete was reported around 12:45 p.m. during the midspan of the bridge and several photos of chp and you showed one of them and

basically the size of a piece of concrete. the size of a man's fist. lanes three and four were closed for emergency road work and according to chp, bridge inspectors arrived to the bridge around 2:30 p.m. and maybe ten minutes after that, the bridge was reopened. let's keep in mind this is not the first time the falling concrete shut down lanes of this bridge. back in february, a massive piece of concrete fell on a vehicle and we did interview the man behind the wheel and he was telling us about the horrible experience that he faced once this concrete fell on top of his car and cal trans will continue to monitor the bridge carefully and working with contractors to prevent concrete from falling. no reports of damage or injury today from the concrete that fell. we'll of course, bring you the latest about the story. >> thank you. another north bay traffic issue started after a box truck crashed and caught fire this morning. it was on northbound 101 just past the robin williams tunnel.

the crash happened at 8:30 this morning and all lanes reopened by 3:00 p.m. the driver of the truck was treated at the scene and released. cal trans crews spent several hours repairing a broken guard rail. we are on storm watch and not much to show. the worst of today's weather has already moved past the bay area. nbc 7 news was in san francisco when it rained this morning. light but enough to put up some umbrellas and turn on the wipers. spencer is already tracking our next storm. spencer. >> live doppler 7 experiencing a bit of a break from this morning's showers but right now live doppler 7 shows a little area of trickles or sprinkles just off shore. in advance of our next storm which, is a light one. ranks only one on the storm impact scale. late tonight and through tomorrow morning light showers up to.15 of additional rainfall. breezy at times and here is the

>> immediately i became concerned about the depression given that we had a larger sinkhole that developed in 2016. >> reporter: this was the view from drone view 7 back then. the sinkhole swallowed an entire intersection and traffic signal. nobody was hurt and no vehicles swallowed. people around here remember. >> it was huge. >> caused a lot of traffic. so, after school at 3:00 p.m. was a nightmare. every single dath right here was completely backed up. >> reporter: employees at this corner gas station which releases property also remember, though they didn't want to talk on camera about it. >> underneath the intersection, as well as under the shopping center is a 96 inch corrugated pipe. >> reporter: earlier this week, a camera filmed the pipeline so that consultants could study it. eare pairs in 2016 cost $2.9 million. the public works director says it could cost three times as much now. he says maraga needs storm drain funds. >> right now it's dinky. >> dinky. >> but it's going to get large.

on west steel lane. one dad escaped by scurrying down a tree and handing off his toddler son to people below. >> when we arrived on scene we had reports of people on balconies dropping from carports and firefighters placing ladders all around the building helping rescue people. >> i grabbed my laptop and i went back to the stairwell and it was completely black with smoke. scary. >> four people were injured, but no one went to the hospital. fire fl os say 70 of the buildings 140 residents are now displaced and could be for a few weeks. in the south bay, a 72 san jose man assaulted during a car jacking in his driveway is showing video of the aftermath of that attack. the surveillance video shows hector estrada falling to his kneeon to the lawn in front of his home on coldwater drive and then slumping on to all fours for a moment before standing up again. a 14-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly carjacking and assaulting

estrada wednesday morning. estrada says the suspect pulled a gun on him and demanded his keys. the grandfather of six told us that he wasn't afraid mainly because he's suffering from a terminal pulmonary illness and doesn't have a long life expectancy so he has little to fear in life any more. well, we are wrapping up ride share realities week here on abc 7 as part of our commitment to building a better bay area. digging into the big issues we face like transportation and looking to make life better. >> car safety regulations and how ride sharing has affected the taxi industry. abc 7 news reporter wain friedman spent tuesday with a taxi driver and found out the >> then wain became a lyft driver for a day. >> i can tell you a a a a driving for a ride share company will cure it for you in a hurry.

momentum is building in the south bay to preserve a large area of open space. conservation will create trails and flood protection and other benefits, it will also help wildlife in coyote valley. abcp news reporter shows us some samples. >> reporter: conservation groups and elected officials have been working together to preserve 17 acres of development. they have another motivation. trying to save the wildlife that roam the hills and use this habitat to migrate between the santa cruz mountains and the diablo range. the open space authority has been studying them. they also attach tracking devices to bobcats and human made barriers can impede their movement. monterey highway has a five-foot high concrete divider with the fence on top of that that adds three feet. if the open space authority is working on a two-prong solution. >> secondly is putting in

underneath monterey highway so wildlife can safely pass. >> reporter: a bill in the legislature to make coyote valley a state conservation program. that designation will help to raise funds for the estimated $200 million needed to buy privately owned land to preserve the habitat and create public recreation and to protect the wildlife. >> at the state level water bond and greenhouse gas emission and by doing this, we put ourselves in a better competitive advantage to require state resources that are available. >> reporter: this remreplenishe the water but another compelling reason to save the lives of humans and wildlife. residents approved a measure that provides $50 million to acquire land in coyote valley. >> negotiations are going well with the land owners in the area. issue bonds in august. >> reporter: the open space authority says free movement of wildlife should help prevent.

david louieabc 7 news. free park fridays. for the rest of the year, you won't have to pay fees on fridays to visit east bay regional park. things like parking, swimming and boat launching are all free. there are 73 parks spread out across alameda and contra costa county including crown beach, del valle point and tilden park. the biggest park district in the country. the fee free fridays are in honor of the district's 85th anniversary this year. also happening today, the giants home opener. >> that's right. in the rain, the first game at what is now called oracle park. but the ballpark has been the giants home for 20 seasons and today the celebration focused on an old favorite. >> mindsy joins us live. >> yes, this is bruce bochy's

final home opener. after 13 seasons as a skipper, the 63-year-old is retiring at the end of the season and the san francisco fans took this opportunity today to let him know just how much he would be missed. he gave a tip of his cap to the sellout crowd as he received a standing ovation during the pregame ceremony. he also threw out the ceremonial first pitch. pablo sandoval was in the crouch to receive it and bochy admitted this entire experience was overwhelming. >> it's overwhelming what happened there and something i'll never forget. so, i thank them and it was, you know, a really special moment and i had a lot of family here. so, i really appreciate what they did. it blew me away, to be honest. it was really overwhelming. >> i think there's an appreciation for just how long that he's been doing it and what type of commitment that takes tt

emoriville camera. partly cloudy skies and 59 degrees in san francisco and low 60s in oakland and 59 at half moon bay. the view shows low clouds hovering over the golden gate and temperatures in napa and vaccavlle and 63 in concord and 60 in livermore and the stunning, dramatic view and looking westward. our forecast features will see a few showers late tonight and early tomorrow morning and then a dry break from midday tomorrow until sunday morning, monday morning rather from saturday afternoon to monday morning. and then another chance of showers monday night. the approaching storm the one coming in overnight ranking one and expect light showers to maybe .15. not much happening in the late night hours but by 6:00 tomorrow morning light rainfall near the coast and then 8:00 tomorrow morning even more widespread and moving to the central valley and

filling up at the gas pump is a painful experience because it's so expensive these days. but now imagine the pain when the gas pump tries to charge you for fuel you didn't get. >> yeah, that's just infuriating. it's what happened to one san francisco man who, of course, reached out to michael finney. >> that is probably the right word. this guy is looking at a gas pump meter that is racking up charges while no gas is being pumped. the chevron station at harrison and sixth in san francisco is a very busy place. it's where alan lowe often fills up his car. recentry, he had an odd experience here. >> i put the gas pump in and went into the store and expecting it to come back to have the car filled up, ready to go. i came back and the nozzle stopped, but i noticed that the meter was still going. so, i took the nozzle out and it kept going. so, i took a video of it. >> reporter: alan sent me his video through facebook so i could show it to you and find

out what's going on. here is that video. notice there's no fuel coming out of that nozzle. now, look above at the meter. the cost of the fuel and the amount of the fuel registered as being pumped just keeps going up. >> when i put it back, it finally stopped. so, i had to go in and talk to them and just see if they could give me a refund or something. but, they were able to give me about $5 estimate. so they weren't sure and i wasn't really sure how much it actually went over. >> alan did great advocating for himself. by asking for that refund and chevron was proactive and consumer superintend friendly by working out a solution on the spot. the pump was put out of service. alan filed a complaint with the san francisco department of weights and measures. >> they contacted me and they told me they'll give me an update once they investigate and look more into it. >> reporter: i spoke with weights and measures and it sent out an inspector that day and it

says the investigation is ongoing. i reached out to chevron, which owns this station, and was told in part, issues with dispenser accuracy are rare. and we greatly appreciate hearing about any concerns so that we can address them right away. a customer alerted us to this issue and we provided a refund to the customer and took the dispenser out of service. a technician came to the station that same day. tested. the other dispensers were also inspected and no other issues were found. now, alan did absolutely everything here correctly. always document, video is best. chevron says the out of service pump i saw was the correct pump, but it was for an unrelated issue and that, they say, is also repaired. >> nice work. president trump has been in california today visiting the u.s./mexico border. he is now in los angeles where he is attending a fund-raiser. protesters greeted the president as he arrived on the southern

border to tour the first place of border fencing. the president now says if the flow of undocumented migrants and drugs doesn't stop he could shut down the border. >> we will shut it down if we have to. tariff the cars that come in. >> and in another about face, the president is praising mexico for ramping up its enforcement efforts. mexican authorities say there has been no change in policy. u.s. officials estimate the number of undocumented migrants at the borded could reach a million by the end of the year. in the south bay a solution to ease trachk in its downtown corrid corridor. officials there have been quietly piloting a free valet parking program and so far so good. >> in mountain view, this isn't your ordinary downtown parking lot. >> good morning, ma'am. we have free valet service for you. >> this is great.

you pull in and they take the car and it doesn't cost anything and its arer been really easy for us. >> reporter: a pilot program now under way offering free valet during peak hours. dozens of drivers making use of the city-provided service at villa and franklin. >> on average in downtown, 30% of traffic is attributed to people circulating for parking >> business development specialist says the city is able to provide more parking by using existing space without having to create additional infrastructure. >> for example, a restriping of a parking lot or building a new parking structure because that takes time and a lot of coordination where this program we've been able to ramp up in a short amount of time. >> reporter: the chamber of commerce says the program has been beneficial for everyone. >> the more people that have the opportunity to come downtown and do their shopping or have a drink, get some food, bring your family is better for us as a community. >> reporter: funded by the downtown parking district, the pilot operates between 11:00 in

as part of our efforts here at abc 7 news to build a better bay area, we are digging into ride share realities this week. >> in the rise of uber and lyft created advantages and challenges. >> the issues we tackled this week. >> reporter: we started with a commuter challenge. ride share versus taxi. our abc 7 community journalist went from our san francisco studios to the marine side of the golden gate bridge. ride share won on speed and price. but in the evening, taxi won on price and just barely on speed. we also looked into how ride share drivers make a living. companies tout their flexible schedules and easy money. one man who drives for uber and lyft says he is lucky if he makes $700 after gas and expenses and that's working 50 hours a week. what about your safety?

a san francisco law firm working ride share cases says companies need to do a better job of checking out applicants. uber says its strength in background checks over the last year and launched new safety features. as for cab drivers, they undergo background checks and are fingerprinted and drug tested. how about the car itself. uber and lyft require the state 19-point minimum inspection and taxi must pass an inspection of 170 points. dwane friedman spent a day with a taxi driver. is this a war? >> yes. >> he has been driving his cab for 13 years and uber and lyft drivers should have to follow the same set of rules. ride share companies are regulated by the state, but san francisco city attorney wants the state to allow more local regulation. city officials estimate more than 5,700 ride share vehicles operate on city streets during the week day peak commute.

until the team was already in a hold. they got runners on base and had opportunities and right now they're not getting the results. >> sometimes when things aren't going great, you tend to press a little bit and so it's kind of finding that happy medium between the right intensity, but not too much. >> ideally, we would love to jump out to a lead every game. you know, it's, obviously, not too many games played yet and hopefully we can turn that around. >> usually takes one guy to get that hit to loosen everybody up. and get contagious there and we talked about that many times. >> we're not that far. our last road trip i think we won and lost two games by one run. we're close. we just need that, like you said, that one hit and i think i just pushed us over that edge. >> we have to go out there and do our jobs and make a bit of an adjustment and it's part of the game. sometimes you do well and sometimes you don't. >> so, the giants were 2 for 13
