stay just twice this spring. allergies. or.. badda book. badda boom. book now at choicehotels.com. good morning bay let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. >> it's saturday, april 6th, and thank you very much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with the accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking the weather for us. >> we do have a front moving through the bay area. it will be with us through the next several hours and it is up 0.01 in the north bay and off the coast of point rays and about 35 miles from the san mateo coast. so some showers all of the way down to the santa cruz mountains this morning. walnut creek is gray and we're looking at temperatures in the mid and upper 50s from san jose to oakland. from our roof camera, it has been breezy and slick in the city. 54, santa rosa and 52 in

livermore and foggy on the coast and delays at sfo and a cloudy afternoon and we'll look for dry conditions later on today. tonight, it will be dry and tomorrow we're hoping for some sun and another system heads our way monday, chris? >> lisa, thank you. >> all lanes of the venetia bridge are back open after a bomb scare. last night the southbound lanes were shut down for several hours because a man stopped in the middle of a bridge and said he had a bomb. officers took him into custody, but the bombquad had to examine a questionable package left inside the truck. nothing dangerous was found. all lanes reopened around 11:30. the suspect is identified as 54-year-old rodney brinkerhoff. he is expected to face multiple charges. repairs are under way on the richmond san rafael bridge after chunks of concrete fell once again. it happened yesterday on the west end of the span. in early february it was the east end. abc 7 news reporter luz pena has reaction from richmond's mayor

and cal trans. sky 7 caught the moment this piece of concrete fell on the lower level of the richmond san rafael eastbound lanes backing up traffic for two hours. >> it's basically reaching the end of its life and they've been patching it for years. >> the mayor of richmond is an architect on the site and says this bridge needs to be replaced. the cal trans director for district 4 says that's the long-term plan. >> developing a study for bridge replacement and this year we will be requesting the funds to do that study. >> a piece of concrete fell on a vehicle. this incident is not the same. >> they were doing demolition work on one of the sliding plate expansion joints and some of the concrete fell on that barrier system. >> there were no injuries today, but some richmond residents are planning to avoid this bridge. >> i am worried about something dropping on me. >> ironically for april fool's, richnd's mayor joked about the bridge closing april 15. >> i did not mean for it to be

prediction. i meant for it to be a joke. >> cal frans dtrans did confirm safe for drivers. elizabeth pena, abc 7 news. >> a car drove into an apartment building in santa rosa. police say a woman left her 16-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old family friend inside the vehicle while she went inside. the car was left running and the 14-year-old boy got into the driver's seat. the girl was outside of the car apparently teaching the boy about the car's controls, but that's when the boy somehow put the car into gear and hit the gas. she was dragged until the car crashed into the building and she's expected to be okay. >> family and friends gathered to mourn a pittsburg principal who was shot and killed. his family invited the community to a celebration of life and abc 7 news reporter ansar hassan was there. >> this should be a good time to honor the life of pauly shatswell. >> the shatswell family says it's a night to celebrate, not

to mourn. >> if you knew him, you knew how great he was, right? >> the hugely popular pittsburg principal was shot and killed at his home on march 15th allegedly by his wife following a dispute. he leaves behind eight children. his son jonathan spoke. >> he was an inspiration to all of us whether to do good or make better choices in our lives. that's just what his goal was. >> mansour is an esl teacher at shatswell's school. she wants people to remember how paul was always willing to help. >> a very outgoing person and just very helpful and very loving. okay, let me help you with this or let's do this. >> he loved education, but if it was up to him he probably would have been a rock star. >> paul's daughter spoke of his love for music and his sister talked about his love for family and community. >> i just know that he's watching all of us, and i know that he is happy that we're all together, and i promise him i'll

be around for the rest of my life, and i love you guys so much. i love you, paul. >> earlier this week the judge ruled that the mom cannot have contact with the three young children because they could be called as witnesses in the case. she has pled not guilty and remains in richmond jail. in pittsburgh, ansar hassan, abc 7 news. in the south bay, san jose police have been cleared in any wrongdoing in the deadly shooting of 24-year-old jennifer vasquez. [ bleep ], get out of the [ bleep ] car! keep your arms out! >> this is body cam video. the santa clara county district attorney just released and the shooting happened early christmas morning. officers identified vasquez in another shooting. she threatened officers by driving through them in a high-speed chase. four officers opened fire hitting vasquez 14 times after repeatedly warning her to stop.

the d.a. found her behavior made the officers fear for her lives even though she was the wrong suspect. >> vallejo police, it happened after 5:00 thursday morning. the uber was trying to make a left turn from sacramento street. they're hoping to identify them. the driver and passenger were not seriously hurt. as part of our efforts at abc 7 news to build a better bay area, we've been digging into ride share realities this past week. we've looked at advantages and challenges of uber and lyft and there is a commute chal sxefrmg is a ride share or cab faster? we looked at uber and lyft safety policies and how cities like san francisco are working to accommodate the influx in ride sharing and we also got a first-hand look at what it's like to be a driver and wayne

freedman became a lyft driver for a day and here's what happened. >> have you ever wondered what it's like to be a lyft driver? we did, so take a look at our car. we rented it from lyft and now we're going to hit the streets of san francisco. so, welcome to the fray. it's slow moving much of the time in the big city and you're watching a man on four wheels casting himself to the whims of passengers he'll know only on a first-name basis, but not for long. >> you must be amanda. >> that's me, thank you. >> you're karen, right? >> and here's hamid who was happy to talk as long as we didn't show his face. >> all right. we know how to get to the airport. we've done this before, but never professionally. >> what's the feature story? >> i just want to know what it's like to be a lyft driver. so i signed up. it's not that hard to sign up. it is all online, answer a few question, give them a license number, social security. the hardest part for me was figuring out what picture to

use. >> will you ride with that man? no. >> are you trying to be a slightly scary picture? >> a scary picture might be appropriate when dealing with downtown traffic. >> okay. we will make another right on harrison. okay. shush your mouth. >> one learns quickly out here that civilians rarely give ride share drivers any kind of break. are you kidding? are you kidding? i'm working, man! >> the lyft app is actually pretty simple and effective. it connects you with passengers and shows you the best route for getting them where they want to go, but you have to find them first and at rush hour? john. do you know john? we're on a first-name basis. i've got to go back and get sean. sean, don't go. god, i feel an obligation to sean. >> while we're looking for sean, a bit more background. lyft will lease a car like this for $215 a week plus taxes and fees. the driver pays for gas and has

a $1,000 deductible for body damage if there is an accident. saw my picture? >> mostly drivers and passengers make small talk. >> you know why i like shauna? because they have a lot of chinese food [ laughter ] >> said that, be careful what you ask. >> you don't watch tv. >> i don't watch tv? >> out of the car! out of the car! out of the car! >> back on the highway now, another lesson with hamid on that airport run. >> we for milbrae because we missed the exit, okay? >> but hamid was an out of towner and a driver has to work for those tips. tell him you're giving him a special tour and sell it. now we're going to go by the cargo terminal. bottom line, in a three-hour shift your lyft driver made about $60 on six rides and he used more than a quarter tank of gas. >> it is a hard way to make a living and now the good news. finally, we got hamid to the

>> a mother and her young son have major injuries after three dogs attacked them in the backyard of a vallejo home. officers arrived to locust drive last night to find the pit bull terriers attacking the victims. they used pepper spray to separate the dogs. police say the dogs were under the victim's care at the time. the woman and the boy were taken to a trauma center. solano county animal control seized the animals. for the second year in a row, california ranks number one in the country for dog-related injury claims. state farm says it paid more than $18 million for 400 dog bite claims last year. experts suggest never leaving a baby or a small child alone with a dog and walk your dog on the leash and if a stranger wants to pet your dog make sure the dog is comfortable. time now is 8:14. the latest problem is on ream boulevard near the ream

valley shopping center. this was the view from drone view seven in 2016. a sinkhole in the same area swallowed an entire intersection and traffic signal. repairs three years ago cost $3 million. officials say it could cost three times as much now. >> they needed it dedicated to the storm drain system or it's aging at 60 years old and things are failing now. >> if the depression does grow, the problem could affect the entire storm drain system. >> taking a live look at san jose this morning, online food travel and entertainment website thrillist says it may actually be one of the most underappreciated cities in the country. amanda del castillo has more. >> silicon valley, the center for tech and innovation. most associate the high-tech hub with another booming city. >> san francisco is usually the place that they know. >> to get technical about the tech capital, it's san jose. travel and entertainment website

testament to the humility. >> we don't promote ourselves. we are humble and we mind our own business and do our thing. >> wang says changing culture and tech, changing the way the world thinks and in san jose, i'm amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. >> a super surprise at disney california adventure. stars from the avengers and disney chairman and ceo bob iger were there yesterday. they are doeb eighting more than $5 million in cash and toys to benefit children with critical illnesses. disney is the parent company of abc 7. parts of the bay area saw rain this morning and meteorologist lisa argen is tracking the accuweather forecast. >> hi, chris. you can see the moisture offshore and this is what's going on move through the bay area. the next couple of hours and we've had showers up to the north and as we go in a little bit closer and not too much out there and just a mist and drizzle and spotty showers from

kernville to marshal and out to get the santa cruz mountains wet and in the peninsula. you see the moisture out there and the flow is pretty zonal which means there is a good deal of moisture there that continues to push into the bay area. we need a little lift and we have a weak cold front or warm front providing the lift and the possibility of showers the next few hours. look how gray it is out there and the east bay hills camera, and san francisco, and san jose and 56, and a break as you head across the golden gate bridge today and you could see a shower, and even tonight the likelihood in sonoma and napa is elsewhere. 54, petaluma and arriving flights at sfo. morning showers are possible. dry this afternoon with a sunnier sunday on tap and the next system moves in and around the bay area and not much,

except for clouds and mist and drizzle. wave heights, ten feet bodega bay to santaa cruz to the increased risk of sneaker waves out there. a little sun will bring us up into the low 70s in the inland valleys and it should be a nicer day with more sun away from the bay and we'll call it partly sunny tomorrow and as we get into monday, more clouds and maybe rain far to the north and we're cooler and the system cools us off with breezy winds behind it. for tuesday, looking at conditions in the upper 60s to near 70s. slightly cooler around the bay after the front pushes through, but today it looks awfully wet with the forecast animation, but not all of this reaching the ground. a likelihood of showers as we go through the noon hour and even 1:00 and the santa cruz mountains and the peninsula could be with us, the nuisance showers and the cloud cover with us throughout the afternoon. so if you want it sunny, you have to wait on that and better luck tomorrow in the inland

valleys and a couple hundreds throughout the day and you see some of the mist and drizzle and you are looking at that system monday just skirting the bay area and it really doesn't move through, but in and around the bay allowing for the cloud cover and perhaps a few light showers and some mist and drizzle into your monday and early tuesday. 65, today, in oakland and 67 in fremont, plenty of clouds and the risk of a morning shower and all of the way down through santa cruz and san jose through the first half of the day and tomorrow in san francisco, the rock n roll marathon series with temperatures in the mid-50s to start out early and the accuweather forecast, a storm impact today with the weak system moving through by the first half of the day and then tomorrow we get some sun. we warm up to the 70s and monday a little cloudy, rain chance, you download the accuweather app and it will feel like spring midweek. >> sounds great, lisa. thank you. coming up --

deaths since 2015. infants three months or older rolled from their back to their stomach or side. the babies were not buckled in. the cpsc has urged parents to stop using the rock and play when children are 3 months old or able to roll over. the website gas buddy predicts the average price in california will soon rise to the highest level since 2015. the state average right now is $3.78, but prices could climb to $4 in the next two weeks. gas supply is tight because refineries throughout the state are in the midst of planned maintenance and oil prices are up to their highest levels in five months. >> filling up at the gas pump is a painful experience with today's cost of fuel and imagine the pain when the pump tries to charge you for gas you haven't even received. that's what happened to one san francisco man. he reached out to 7 on your side's michael finney for help. >> the chevron station at harrison and 6th in san francisco is a very busy place.

it's where alan lowe often fills up his car. recently, he had an odd experience here. >> i put the gas pump in and went into the store expecting it to come back to have the car filled up and ready to go and i came back. the nozzle stopped, but i noticed that the meter was still going and i took the nozzle out and it kept going, and i took the video of it. allen sent me the video through facebook so i can show it to you and find out what's going on. here is that video. notice there's no fuel coming out of that nozzle. now look above at the meter. the cost of the fuel registered as being pumped, just keeps going up. >> when i put it back, it finally stopped. so i had to go and talk to them to see if they can give me a refund or something, but yeah, they were able to give me about

a $5 estimate. so they weren't really sure and i wasn't sure now much they went over. >> alan did great advocating for himself by advocating for that refund and chevron was pro-active and consumer friendly by working out a solution on the spot. >> the pump was put out of service. alan filed a complaint with the san francisco department of weights and measures. >> they contacted me and they told me they'll give me an update once they investigate and look more into it. >> i spoke with weights and measures and it seven out an inspector that day and it says the investigation is ongoing and i reached out to chevron which owns this station and was told in part, issues with dispenser accuracy are rare and we greatly appreciate hearing about any concern so you can address them right away. a customer alerted us to this issue and we provided a refund to the customer. a technician came to the station that same day. the hardware was fixed and tested. the other dispensers were also

good morning, east bay. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. >> thanks for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. a wet start for the day for some and here's meteorologist lisa argen. she's tracking the latest conditions where you live. >> we have the storm impact scale for the morning hours and it's a weak system riding along the north bay, the coast and the peninsula allowing for scattered showers and a couple of 100s and pin pointing the rain for the marin county coastline and a few scattered showers through springs and look what's offshore of the san mateo coast and more moisture will move into the peninsula and big sur. we also have the gray skies throughout the rest of the afternoon even though it won't be raining and it will be pretty cloudy out there and 57 in mountain view and 49 in morgan hill and the beach hazard statement and the possibility of

sneaker waves and about seven, eight-foot waves so do be careful if you're headed out and temperatures in the low 50s and 61 today and 57 in concord right now. so as we go through the rest of the morning and the atmosphere continues to dry out and we'll be in the low to mid-60s around the bay, mid and upper 60s elsewhere and tonight we are dry. can we get in some sunshine for the weekend? i'll let you know next. >> lisa, thank you. >> happening today, president trump is in nevada to speak to the national leadership of the republican jewish coalition. let's take a look at video of him arriving in las vegas. he flew in from los angeles where he made an unannounced visit to his golf club. earlier he visited the border in calexico and shared a harsh message. the president is telling everyone with hopes of coming to the u.s. that the country is full. tara palmery has more. >> reporter: president trump visited a small border city in

california to tour the first piece of construction of his border wall and he came with this blunt message to migrants that this new, taller border wall means stay out. listen to this. >> our country is full. our area is full. the sector is full. can't take anymore, i'm sorry. sorry. turn around. that's the way it is. >> this comes as the numbers of border crossings have surged in the past two months. in his message, he's denying even asylum seekers a port of entry calling the process a scam and a hoax. on the border, president trump is surveying a two-mile strip of 30-foot tall steel slats, but this isn't a new barrier on open land. it's a replacement of 40-foot tall matted fence constructed in the 1990s. it was a porous area that customs and border patrol under the obama administration recognized in 2009 needed to be fixed and president trump is

promising that there will be 400 more miles of this type of steel-slotted border along the wall. tara palmieri, abc news, washington. >> the coast guard has seized more than 7 tons of cocaine with the help of a crew based in alameda. over the past two months, suspecteding someli suspected smuggling vessels were intersec intercepted and offloaded in san diego yesterday. the drugs were worth $190 million. it focuses onning smuggling routes in the eastern pacific pand the caribbean. happening today in los angeles, people will be raising money in honor of nipsey hussle. a tattoo shop is offering a special deal with all of the money going to one of his favorite charities. the rapper was killed last weekend. police say he got into some sort of fight with the suspect eric holder outside of hussle's store on sunday. investigators say holder came back with the gun. he pleaded not guilty to murder

charges. holder is being held on $5 million bail. boeing is cutting back production on its 737 max, but says the move is only temporary. boeing says it will reduce the output from 52 to 42 planes every month. the 737 max is being scrutinized after more than 300 people died in two crashes. a preliminary report of last month's crash in ethiopia appeared to point to a possible problem with the plane's anti-stall system. all of boeing's 737 max jets have been grounded since that crash. >> now to a bit of a celebrity at venice beach in santa monica. jeffrey nash has an unusual workout of swinging on the exercise rings while hula hooping. check it out. i'm here at the original muscle beach in santa monica and there are workouts, and i think the weirdest and the best workout is this man doing the

hula hoop while grabbing rings. >> as far as i know, there are four people in the world that can do it with any sense of consistency. >> so how long have you been coming here? >> i started coming in 1981. >> we use the chalk to give us a good grip on the high bar. >> after i had done it for a while i found out that there was a world record. >> there is a world record on hula hooping on the rings? >> yeah. >> i contacted the guinness people and i jumped through all the hoops, pun intended. to actually get it official and i officially got the world record. >> you are the number one world record holder for hula hooping on the rings. >> well, i was. >> no way! someon took it from you? >> until the end of last year. he bested my personal best by a couple of rings, so now i have to up my jam. >> rocky 4 and you're trying to get back in the ring!

of traffic is attributed to people circling for parking. >> business development specialist tiffany which you says the city is able to provide more parking by using existing space. >> for example, a restriping of a parking lot or building a new parking structure because that takes time and a lot of coordination was this program we've been able to ramp up in a short amount of time. >> the chamber of commerce says the program has been beneficial for everyone. >> the more people that have the opportunity to come downtown and do their shopping and have a drink, get some food, bring your family is better for us as a community. >> funded by the downtown parking district, the pilot operates between 11:00 in the morning and 2:00 in the afternoon and again from 5:00 to 10:00 thursday through saturday. this june the program will expand starting at 11:00 and go until 10:00 at night on the same days. >> i look for two or three different parking spots and i went through two separate lots
