more than 1,000 parishioners gathered in oakland. many knew him as father j, the man of god who was there for many. >> one of the things about jay is he had the institutional memory. he knew everybody. it seemed like he knew everybody in oakland. >> reporter: with tears, i da remembers him as her friend of 20 plus years who was there when her husband died. >> gave me comfort and he made me feel at ease. that's the type of person he was. >> reporter: she says father jay was family. >> my daughters godfather. and he's been a very nice man, inspational. you can tell from the people in here today that's been able to impact the community and leave the community much better. >> reporter: in 1974, he became the first african-american ordained priest in northern california. >> father j was the first priest i ever knew who not only valued

our african culture and heritage, but he promoted it. >> reporter: oakland's mayor libby schaaf spoke to the crowds about her personal relationship with the priest. >> i had that idea back in the early '90s before i had ever met my husband, it's probably unusual to know who is going to officiate your wedding before you know who the groom is going to be. but i can say father j was such a force, such a force of love. >> reporter: before taking over as rector of the cathedral of christ delight in oakland in 2015, father jay served as pastor of st. benedict's church in east oakland where his legacy will live on at saint benedict we'll name the hall after him because that was his hall prior to coming here to the cathedral. >> father j's funeral will be held monday at 7:00 p.m. at cathedral of christ dee light at oakland and his interment at st.

sad. >> reporter: fans at the fine home season game were emotional saying good-bye to their east bay warriors home. >> they definitely earned a new stadium. but it's not going to be oakland. so it's a little heart breaking. >> reporter: the team is moving to san francisco and will play next season at the billion dollar chase center. kate larsson, abc7 news. >> more history on the warriors. they moved there from san francisco for the 1971-'72 season. they reaped the playoffs 18 times if you include this season and the warriors won the nba championship four times during their oracle days with 2017 being the only time they clinched at home from '70 through '76, oracle was the home of the california golden seals of the national hockey league. what's next for oracle? the arena will continue to host events like concerts, ice shows and other sporting events like college or high school tournaments. and anas of now, the warriors are on the hook to pay oakland more than $40 million for

an elderly canadian couple and stopped by a group of men with guns wearing army fatigues. they took away kimberly sue and john paul at gunpoint leaving behind the two elderly canadians who notified the authorities. this sparked a huge manhunt involving police, army, helicopters. we've seen vehicles moving in and out and the fbi were involved in attempts to try and recover them. a spokesman for the tour company told abc news a ransom was paid for their release. the u.s. government insisting it doesn't pay kidnap hes for fear of encouraging more hostage taking. if money changed hands, that will be of huge concern to the tourists coming into the area being safe, and spending their money. but questions still remain where the kidnappers are and how safe this area is. ian pannell abc news at queen elizabeth national park, uganda. >> a southern california man has

been arrested on suspicion of murder in the drunk driving death of a motorcycle officer. michael callahan is accused of killing patrol sergeant steve liken. police say he crossed over the shoulder on route 15 crashing both liken and a car he pulled over. colleagues say he had a great sense of humor and loved that his office was on a motorcycle. >> he was my former sergeant. he meant a lot to me as did he for others, as well. >> flags were flown at half-staff at the state capitol in his honor. sergeant lichen is survived by his wife, daughter and step daughter. a richmond man is behind bars accused of murdering a man in el cerrito. richmond ray hill was arrested by b.a.r.t. police at the richmond last night. police say video connected him

to the death of larry lawson senior, a transient found dead just after 11:00 last saturday night. hill was booked on suspicion of murder. new developments, the chp now believes speeding likely played a role in a chain reaction crash in oakland that sent six people to the hospital. firefighters shared pictures from the scene showing three mangles vehicles near 9th avenue. it started when a large truck rear ended a lexus being driven with a flat tire. another car then hit the truck about ten minutes later. the chp says the lexus driver did something unsafe by driving on a flat tire. >> if you get a flat on the freeway, please move to the right shoulder. it's driving on a low rate of speed during dark hours, it just you know, you don't know who is driving out there, if someone's driving at a high rate of speed. >> two injured in the crash are

in critical condition. in the wake of the college admission scda stanford kicked ott a student they say used fake sailing credentials. the student was expelled by the university on tuesday. the newspaper adds she got in through the standard process and not recruited as an athlete. once admitted there was a contribution of half a million dollars to the school's sailing program. it was made through now former head coach john vandemoer. he was fired last month after pleading guilty in the scheme. if you have not filed your tax return yet, you only have just over a week to do it. tax day is april 15th. that's a week from tomorrow. if you're procrastinating, the irs says the number of individual tax returns filed by march 29th was down more than 1% from this time last year. people are trying to wrap their heads around the tax law changes. the irs is expecting one in ten to ask for an extension this

a seattle area couple is alive tonight and all the difference in the world was made by a few inches. 24 power poles tumbled along a street in the seattle one of them impaled an suv belonging to tom and linda cook on friday. firefighters needed to wait for utility workers to dee energize voltage wires before they could free the cooks from their car. the polanded right between paul and linda. >> if i would see that car as a bystander i'm saying people died in that car. >> it wasn't my time. and besides, i decided i wanted to live to be 100. >> had it hit onto the left or right, it would have come down on top of one of us. >> well, both tom and linda are recovering from minor injuries at home.
