student expelled. this is the latest development in the college admissions scandal. how the university says the student got in. good morning to you. it is monday, april 8th. >> thanks for joining us. yu're never more than seven minutes away from the accuweather forecast. let's kick things off with meteorologist mike nicco. >> thanks, gang. we'll look at what's going on outside. in some areas it looks exactly like that. it is dark because of the fog that is out there. you can see the visibility is less than an eighth of a mile for places like half moon bay. that's starting to move into parts of san francisco. you can see petaluma has dangerously thick fog. a look at the golden gate bridge. you can see how thick it is. that's going to be around for the entire morning commute. and then we'll have 60s everywhere by noon. notice only 61 at the coast at 4:00. the rest of us hovering around 70 with showers in the north bay. those will start spreading around the 7:00 hour. a check of the morning commute

ok a a pretty busy bay bridge toll plaza at least in the cash lanes. car-pool lanes have opened up and fast track lanes are still looking good. no metering lights yet. that should happen closer to 5:20. we have some fog settling in on the span as well. once you make it to the san francisco side it's not looking bad. a quick check of mass transit off to a quiet start. ace 1 out of the central valley on time with no delays and normal service, no issues for capital corridor. alexis, thank you. new developments in the college admissions scandal. a stanford student has been expelled. >> abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live at stanford with what led to the university's decision. amy? >> reporter: jessica, the university says the student faked her sailing credentials when she applied in late 2016. the university has confirmed some of the material in her application is false and that a

russo drive and blossom hill road. officers arrived but did not find a victim. a short time later police say a man showed up at a hospital with at least one gunshot wound. no suspects have been identified. happening today the funeral for a beloved oakland priest. >> thousands gathered sunday to remember reverend james v. matthews ii. he died after an apparent heart attack. elizabeth pena has more on the life and legacy of father j. >> reporter: many knew him as father j. the man of god there for many. >> and one of the things is that he had the institutional memory. he knew everybody. it seemed he knew everybody in oakland. >> reporter: with tears in her eyes, this woman remembers him as her friend of 26 plus years who was there when her husband died. >> he gave me comfort, and he made me feel at ease. that's the type of person he was. family.

>> my daughter's godfather and he's been a very nice man, very inspirational. you can tell from the people in here today he's impacted the community and left the community much better. >> reporter: in 1974 father jay became the first african-american ordained priest in northern california. >> father jay was the first priest i ever knew who not only valued our african culture and heritage, but he promoted it. >> reporter: oakland's mayor libby schaaf spoke to the crowd of parishioners about her personal relationship with the priest. >> i had that idea back in the early '90s before i had ever met my husband, probably unusual to know who will officiate your wedding before you even know who the groom is going to be, but i can say father jay was such a force, such a force of loveepri rector of the cathedral of christ the light in oakland in 2015, father jay served as

pastor of st. benedict's church in east oakland where his legacy will live on. >> at st. benedict we'll name the hall after him because that was his hall, his parish prior to coming here to the cathedral. >> reporter: father jay's funeral will be held monday at 7:00 p.m. in oakland and his interment on tuesday at st. joseph's cemetery where parishioners will say their last good-byes. now to the homeland security shake-up, commissioner kevin mcaleenan will take over as head of the department of homeland security for now. this follows kirstjen nielsen's abrupt resignation. a source says nielsen met with the president yesterday to discuss a path forward but ended up turning in her resignation. the president was reportedly frustrated with her. much more on this at 5:30. governor gavin newsom is in el salvador.

>> he plans to learn what drives people to migrate to the united states. his wife, jennifer newsom, tweeted for their first stop they paid respects at san salvador cathedral. a reminder of their purpose, a desire for peace. his agenda includes meeting with el salvador's elected leaders this marks the first time a sitting california governor has visited central america. analysts say it provides a political opportunity. >> for the candidates in 2020 and beyond want to frame themselves as caring, and so going and making those sort of photo opportunities and carving that time out of your busy schedule is a way to show you care. >> a nonprofit organization is paying for the trip. there could be a teacher shortage because of the housing crisis. the district is asking for help.

offering below market rate housing could attract and keep employees. the city council will consider giving the district $150,000 to plan a new housing development. san francisco is working on a new plan to bet protect people during extreme heat and bad air days. smoke blanketed san francisco with unhealthy air. the newraft emergency response plan during bad air days calls for canceling permanent events during farmers -- including, i should say, farmers markets and festivals. the plan presented remains a work in progress. it will also include a list of buildings where people can go to breathe in clean air. no need to worry about that today unless the pollen bothers you. mid to upper 50s along the east bay shore and warmest is oakland. alameda at 58 degrees.

we've got mid to upp 50s everywhere this morning. dress accordingly. you can see some of the fog trying to pull in from the ocean across san francisco and trying to slide out of the north bay along the east bay shore. expect this to continue as we head throughout the morning hours. we're starting to see some signs of summer show up in the early morning fog. out and about today there's a chance of fog. and a chanc the best chance is in the north bay. i don't know if you'll need an umbrella. everything is nice today. just a bit humid for us and that's why we'll have a chance of showers later on. a look at the peninsula. 56 at 7:00. already in the 60s at 9:00. upper 60s this afternoon. by 7:00 you have a chance of a shower. for the east bay valleys, the same thing, except we'll be flirting with 70 this afternoon. looks like dry all the way through 7:00. and for san jose we'll see a little bit more sunshine. that will help push you up to near 70 this afternoon. it looks like from 7:00 to 7:00 you remain dry. you'll get yours tonight. here is alexis.

talked about. a look at san rafael. southbound on 101 you can see the fog lurking for aftno and evening hours and the scattered showers develop and become more dominant tonight as will the breezes and then the extended trend is seasonal. if it pans out it will be one of the best weeks we've had so far this year. for today you can see a lot of 70s in the east bay, the south bay, and a lot of 60s everywhere else. and with the fog along the coast and san francisco, low 60s during the afternoon hours. also we'll have a little bit of an onshore breeze. mid to upper 40s in the north bay. everybody else in the low to mid-50s. let's look at what's going on. monday at 7:00.the cloud cover. you can see it's not solid. you'll need the sunglasses from time to time where the fog will be dominant. from 7:00 this morning until noon and then they start to slowly slide down towards the coast, the sonoma county coast and then watch the cold front. it quickly moves through and by

5:30 that's when you'll start to notice it becoming breezy in the north bay. a few scattered showers out there. the sun sets, the air cools a little bit by 11:00 and that helps us develop a few more showers. as we head to the overnight hours, the winds really kick in and we wake up tomorrow, if you're early, 4:30 we'll be on, you'll see a few showers in the south bay. look as we head into the afternoon hours. mostly sunny. lingering clouds. it will be breezy and not nearly as humid as it's going to be today. so look at our rainfall totals. up until 7:00 the best chance along the coast, san francisco, half moon bay, and then from calistoga northward and you can see overnight most of us less than a tenth of an inchnk twers threaten tonight's giants game. there may be a stray shower by the end of the game. a lit bit of shower activity moorning and then look at those low to mid-60s at the coast. low 70s.

pass that along. this morning we're learning exactly what led to the sudden resignation of homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen. >> she walked into the white house late yesterday. by the time she walked out, though, she was out of a job. live in washington with how it all went down. hi, mona. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. good morning, reggie. secretary nielsen was by the president's side on friday as he visited the california/mexico border. when she returned to the nation's capital, nielsen was out of a job. this morning akepn the trump administration. homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen is out. president trump announcing the news on twitter. two days after nielsen joined him on a trip border, he then went on to tweet, quote, more apprehensions, captures at the southern border than in many years. border patrol is amazing. country is full. a source tells abc news nielsen met with the president sunday to discuss a path forward and ended up turning in her resignation.

moving. >> families from across the los altos school district protesting the relocation of a middle school. reporter jobina fortson live for us at egan junior high school with more on the very heated debate. good morning, jobina. >> reporter: good morning, jessica and reggie. it seems like the plan for a happy compromise has gone right out the window because a human chain walkout is planned for here at 8:00 this morning according to the parents that are organizing this protest. they tell us roughly 5,000 people in los altos have signed a petition against closing and relocating egan junior high school. "the mercury news" is reporting the school district and bullis charter school reached a tentative agreement allowing the charter school to have its own facility right here and relocate hundreds of students currently attending egan junior high school to a new facility in about four years. the two schools currently share the same campus. egan students would move to a planned building at the san antonio shopping center in

downtown mountain view. bullis would house all of its students here at egan's current location. both the school boards are taking public comment on the proposed agreement at separate meetings tonight. the hope is that this will all be worked out and those plans will be finalized by the end of the month. for now reporting live, jobina fortson, abc 7 news. >> jobina, thank you. in the east bay jury selection will begin in the deadly ghostship warehouse fire. more than 600 potential jurors will be available. the prosecution and defense will each have 20 opportunities to remove a juror without giving a reason. the defendants are charged with 36 counts each of involuntary manslaughter for the deaths at the oakland warehouse. lawyers claim those men are being made scapegoats for the deadly fire even though city inspectors knew about conditions at the facility. we're learning more about a crash that killed young man and badly injured his girlfriend in sonoma county. the truck they were in went off a dirt road near fort ross.

a person died after the vehicle rolled more than 400 feet down a ravine. his girlfriend broke her leg but managed to climb up the embankment. the wreck was not discovered until 12 hours later. it was raining and foggy at the time. back in the east bay a series of illegal sideshows sprung up over the week. take a look at this video from twitter. large crowds gathered to watch people spin their cars. this sideshow blocked traffic at 42nd avenue and international boulevard in oakland late yesterday. opd quickly responded to try to break up the sideshow but, guess what, that crowd just moved to another location and did the sideshow there. police made no arrests. it is the end of an era for the warriors. >> the team just played their final regularcle arena in oakla. >> and the final regular season seconds of 47 years in this

it tapers as it moves to the south bay. it keeps us in the low to mid-50s there. the breezes and the clouds. you can see some mid to upper 50s with a little less cloud cover in the north bay. here we are at 7:00 this morning. you can see the gray. it opens. we'll need the sunglasses from time to time. by noon some of the rain is starting to make its way into sonoma county and that's where it stays during the afternoon and evening hours with a random light shower ahead of that thanks to this cold front. then look what happens overnight. scattered showers. there's just not a lot of them but they're out there. the cold air rushes in tomorrow morning with a brief shower around, maybe the santa cruz mountains and the diablo range. during the afternoon it becomes windy and mostly sunny and temperatures will be stuck in the 50s at the coast. 70s return wednesday. they hit the bay thursday and they stay there all the way through saturday. alexis? all right. good morning, mike. and i want to take you into a couple crashes that we have on the board right now on our traffic map. southbound 880 we do have reports of a two-car crash. i believe we still have two

lanes blocked. they may have it all contained to the far right lane. that is where we had one vehicle facing the wrong way. in any case you can see we do have a backup on southbound 880 that is impacting northbound 238 as well if you're coming in from castro valley. that is one of our bigger issues. the other one, a new crash, westbound 80, they're still working on sorting this one out. it sounds like chp is not there yet and they're not sure how many vehicles are involved but are sending an ambulance and we have at least one lane blocked there because you can see the backup building through the richmond area. an update on ace. unfortunately, it's not great news here. ace 1 is delayed being held at livermore station due to a vehicle stuck on the tracks. the track inspectors is about 10 to 15 minutes out. they need to tow the vehicle and make sure the tracks were not damaged. i'll keep you updated on that. ace 1 not moving. listen up, music fans. solange has canceled coachella.
