first weekend. >> that's crazy. >> and the plot, one of the best kept secrets in hollywood. we have first look at a brand new clip. people will be poring over it all morning searching for clues. we begin with a white house shake-up. president trump has forced out his secretary of homeland security, kirstjen nielsen, after a rocky 16 months, targeted by critics for being too tough, and by the president for not being tough enough. terry moran starts us off at the white house. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. when the end came for kirstjen nielsen it was sudden, but not a surprise. for months, president trump had been openly berating secretary nielsen at cabinet meetings, pushing her to take more and more drastic measures to stop the flow of migrants at the southern border. she became the face of the policy, including the family separation policy. but, all for naught. the migrants kept coming. and president trump's patience ran out. overnight, homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen forced out of the administration. tensions between nielsen and

president trump have been simmering for months, but reached a boiling point after the president's furious response to the recent surge in migrant crossings at the southern border. just hours after a face-to-face meeting with the president on sunday, nielsen submitted her resignation. writing, despite our progress in reforming the new age, i have determined that it is the right time for me to step aside. a source close to nielsen said the two had a series of intense clashes and angry phone calls in recent weeks. according to "the new york times," the president called ms. nielsen at home early in the mornings to demand that she take action to stop migrants from entering the country, including doing things that were clearly illegal, such as plblocking all migrants from seeking asylum. he held her personally responsible for the spike in migrant crossings. border officials say the number of migrants attempts to cross into the u.s. could reach as

high as 1 million this year. the president's frustration with the border has been on full display. >> the system is full. can't take you anymore. whether it's asylum, whether it's -- anything you want. it's illegal immigration. can't take you anymore. we can't take you. our country is full. >> reporter: nielsen will likely best be remembered for enforcing the president's zero tolerance policy, which resulted in the setion of thousands of migrant children from their families at the border. some of whom are still trying to reunite. there is no love lost for her from democrats. >> i'm talking about people who have died in your custody. you don't have the number? >> would you like me to answer the question or do you want to just yell at me? because it's up to you. >> answer the questions that i ask. >> reporter: some are saying good riddance. others are voicing concern over who will lead the agency next. and so her legacy will be that many courts did find several of the major policies that kirsten nielsen put in place to been lawful. that certainly will be part of her legacy. george?

>> and the second major move by the president in the last three days. late friday, he withdrew the nomination of his immigration director ron vitiello to head i.c.e. he's saying he wanted to go in a tougher direction, and it's clear the president wants harsher action, but what more can he do within the law? >> reporter: well, he's looking. he is doing some things to stem legal migration. he's closing offices around the world that help people get to the united states. including family reunification. he's tried to shut down that. but this number of migrants keeps increasing. he's looking for a magic bullet to close the border. tariffs. something that will stop the flow. but it's a complex problem, as kirstjen nielsen found out. >> and on another front, he's raising the limits on immigration as well. i want to bring in our chief justice correspondent, pierre thomas for more on this, and pierre, it is clear that there has been a surge of migrants at the border since january. >> george, good morning. we could have twice as many undocumented immigrants at the border this year as compared to last if a recent surge

continues. the monthly number of migrants caught at the border has doubled from 40,000 a month in the early days of the trump administration to roughly 75,100,000 a month recently. the demographics have changed over time. homeland security officials say there's been a surge in families including those with young children. george? >> kirstjen nielsen has been focused on the border. the homeland security department has much broader responsibilities. >> reporter: it's one of the most critical departments with a multibillion dollar budget, and 22 agencies housed within it. originally formed to protect from terrorist attacks after 9/11, its mission includes playing a critical role in cyber security, protecting the nation's infrastructure, responding to disasters. that's right. fema is under its authority, as is the secret service who is responsible for protecting the president and oversee security at the nation's airports with the tsa, and of course, securing those two borders, george. >> huge, huge job here. pierre thomas, thank you very much.

amy? now to that american tourist and her guide finally freed after being kidnapped and held for ransom for nearly a week. kimberly sue endicott is on her way home to the u.s. this morning. that's her helicopter. her kidnappers still on the loose. our senior foreign correspondent ian pannell is in uganda with the latest. good morning, ian. >> reporter: good morning, amy. this is the spot where kimberly sue was taken and it's where she was released almost five days to the hour after she was snatched. details now emerging. about how she was brought out, and america's role in the rescue. this morning, american tourist kimberly sue endicott is free. seen taking off on a helicopter just moments ago. rescued after being held hostage in the congo and uganda for five days. this image capturing her moments after she was brought back to the wild frontiers lodge in uganda. seen here greeting the resort's director. as far as you know they're safe, well? >> everything is excellent now. >> reporter: everything is

excellent? last tuesday, endicott was on safari in queen elizabeth national book when four kidnappers stopped the car she was in. on sunday, the police issuing a statement saying, the two were uncovered unharmed, in good health and in the safe hands of the joint security team. a u.s. defense official telling abc news, american military providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and liaison officers. >> the united states government doesn't pay for hostages because it puts everyone else in the country in danger of being also ransomed. >> reporter: ugandan authorities refused to pay for the release. but wild frontiers telling abc news that a ransom was paid as part of a negotiated handover. the amount isn't known, but it was reportedly much less than the original demand of $500,000. this is the first hostage-taking incident in more than 30 years.

but with kidnappers still at large and a hunt operation ongoing, this is still not over. so who paid the ransom and why? the u.s. secretary of state saying just last week that america doesn't pay kidnappers. now kimberly sue is on her way home. but we're not allowed into the park, and that's because of this ongoing operation to try and find the kidnappers who are still at large. amy? >> we certainly hope they find them soon, ian. thanks so much. janai? now to the severe weather on the move with 26 million americans in its path. the storms bringing heavy rain and damaging winds with gusts topping 70 miles an hour. ginger is tracking it all. ginger, good morning. those storms are also bringing giant hail. >> yes, bigger than golf ball-sized hail. start with the videos out of pasadena, texas. so just southeast of houston. tough to see there, the collapsed buildings, the roofs peeled off. this was 1 of 175 severe storm reports this weekend. >> reporter: wind gusts strong

enough to send cranes swinging in downtown houston. gusts for some parts of texas reaching up to 74 miles per hour. >> hail. >> reporter: hail bigger than golf balls pounding backyards. >> the roof of that barn was swirling over the top of here. >> reporter: in pasadena, texas, sunday an ef-1 tornado peeling off roofs and destroys buildings. >> we had a tornado come through here. i wept -- went to the window, and we seen trampolines, barns flying around and stuff. it was kind of crazy. >> reporter: in san gabriel, severe storms destroying this nearly 100-year-old church. >> the ceiling is gone. we could have been having services when this happened. it's a tremendous blessing. >> reporter: and near eugene, oregon, mandatory evacuations because of flash flooding after nearly 7 inches of rain inundated the area, and in lebanon, oregon, fire crews rescuing two people and one dog stranded in the rising river water. >> we do have broken poles. broken power lines down.

we do have a building that's partially collapsed. >> with the severe storms there will be flash flooding. already have seen 6 to 8 inches of floosh -- flash flooding in southern arkansas. let me show you where it goes next. along the cold front the severe storms forecast in place. for a large area in the southeast, much of north carolina and south carolina. atlanta included today. knoxville, tennessee. back there in that little circle, just west of birmingham, including tupelo, george. >> thank you, ginger. we get to the latest on a series of fires at three historically black churches in louisiana over less than two weeks. steve osunsami joins us with more on the investigation. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. the state fire marshal says that while it's hard to say definitively these fires aren't connected, it's hard to believe that this is all a coincidence. a series of suspicious fires have hit these black churches in the south. three houses of worship, 200 miles apart, have been destroyed in st. landry parish in

louisiana starting in late march. the first church to burn happened in late march. t the first fire tore through st. mary's baptist church. the next, the greater union baptist church. and the most recent, mt. pleasant baptist just four days ago. >> at this point, we believe there is some relation. whether it's a single person, a single technique, a single method, we're not ready to speak to that yet. >> reporter: local police, the fbi, and atf are investigating these fires as possible arson. ♪ everything's gonna be all right ♪ >> reporter: on sunday, 80 churchgoers whose church was destroyed held services at another church in town. >> something's not right. we're going to keep on keeping on. >> reporter: their pastor told them they lost their church, but not their hope. >> it steals something from you. it robs you. but right now is a time for me to find something to pick them up. it caused us to pray harder and pray more frequently. this is the time for us to pull together.

>> reporter: so gracious ofhis church to let these parishioners, and to volunteer their church for the folks who lost theirs. as they say, god has many homes. and many houses. george? >> they now think a fourth fire may be connected to this? >> reporter: they are. they're saying there was a fourth fire, but they believe that one, but it happened hundreds of miles away. another black church burned down. george? >> steve osunsami, thanks. janai? also this morning, there are new developments in the college admissions scandal. a student has been expelled from stanford in connection with the case. abc's linsey davis is here. linsey, this is one of the first students to actually be expelled in this case. >> reporter: that's exactly right. good morning to you, janai. one of the first confirmed expulsions of a student in that varsity blue scandal that was enrolled and attending classes. stanford says they have rescinded admittance to a female

student. the student is no longer on campus. stanford says they have vacated her credits. according to the school newspaper, after she was admitted, a $500,000 contribution was made to the sailing program through the school's former sailing coach. that coach was then fired last month after pleading guilty to accepting donations in connection with the scandal. >> and linsey, last week we saw about a dozen parents in connection with this case. this week, the man accused of taking tests for some students is due in court on friday? >> reporter: that's right. mark riddell is expected to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and money laundering on friday. >> linsey, thank you so much. amy? >> thank you, janai. now to a thrilling finish. the women's national championship game going right down to the wire. baylor taking the title. holding off defending champs, notre dame, battling back after losing a star player and a 17-point lead rallying to win thanks to this layup. whoo! with four seconds left.

school with the expectation they will be safe at a minute minimum, but this family just finished planning a funeral. they are now speaking out exclusively to "gma." >> i'm thinking they got it handled. and they failed me. >> reporter: the mother of a fifth grader who died after a fight in the classroom is speaking out. ashley wright holding the colleton county school district in south carolina partially responsible for the death of her 10-year-old daughter, raniya, who passed away two days after an encounter with another little girl in a classroom with a te h teacher present. >> i was on lunch when i got the call from the nurse. >> reporter: what did the nurse say? >> she said, i just wanted to call and let you know that raniya been in an accident today. a fight. i said, my child? raniya? i'm like, okay, is she okay? yeah, she's okay. she rephrased to me, she's okay. if you want to come up here, she's just complaining about dizziness and headache. >> reporter: she says her

daughter complained in the past about being bullied by the girl and reported it. >> i notified the school and i also spoke with her teacher at the time about this same person. she would just always come home saying this one girl picking on her. >> reporter: this time, raniya's prognosis went from a headache to being taken to the emergency room. >> i have a big concern about that as far as the communication with the school. no one called me back. >> reporter: tell me what happened when you pulled up. >> all i saw was my daughter hooked up to all these machines and cords on her. >> reporter: almost unrecognizable, raniya was -- understand responsive. her mother would spend the next two days by her bedside. >> i had to sleep by my baby the night before she passed, and that was the hardest thing i ever had to do in my life. oh, yeah. it was just hard. >> reporter: the exact cause of the little girl's death is still under investigation. school officials are not

releasing details of exactly what happened. what raniya's mother does know she says she learned from her daughter's classmates. >> she was bothering niya all day. wanting to fight her. they were in the class. the girl came up from behind her and was hitting her all in the head. how long, i don't know. she pushed her or rammed her head or something into the bookshelf. >> reporter: did niya have any prior health issues? >> my baby was normal as a 10-year-old's supposed to be. >> reporter: in this video, the 10-year-old appears as a quiet, shy girl supporting her church as a junior usher. >> we're looking forward to great things in the church. right, raniya? >> reporter: her mother suggests during the altercation, the teacher, a substitute, may have been distracted. >> the other kids said she was on her phone. >> reporter: the colleton county school district released a statement saying we realize people want to know what happened. once the investigation is complete, we'll release a full report.

an autopsy was conducted friday. authorities won't release the result until more tests come back. now this family told me they have heard from people all over the world who obviously empathize with what they have been through, but you listen to them, their strength. i walked away reminded of how resilient people are. but obviously, such a tragic, tragic story. >> you can see why they are upset. there are so many questions left unanswered in the story. >> reporter: so many questions. they say the substitute teacher was hired by a temp agency. we're researching that right now to try to determine some of those finer details. again, that's the main thing here. so many questions unanswered. >> hopefully they'll get answers. >> your heart goes out to that family. >> reporter: without a doubt. i can't imagine. >> all right. thank you, zachary. now to a close call for a couple trapped by a power line pole slamming into their car, just narrowly missing them. now this morning, they're out of the hospital and sharing the scary details. abc's stephanie ramos is here with their story.

fold, crease, flip. look at your fan. it's like your skin. see those creases -- once they get etched in, it's hard to smooth them out. it's almost like scar tissue. though there's no studies to prove it, in theory, the earlier you do things like botox, the less likely the lines are to get etched in in the first place. >> what about for people who don't want to go to the needle, don't want the botox or fillers? >> it's all about the four ss. sleep. regular exercise. sugar. avoid it. proper skin care. sun screen. retinol. those things are so important. >> that's something i started using because i notice my skin tends to get red and dry. >> is there a certain way that i can avoid that? >> here is the trick. do you mind doing it with me? >> no, not at all. >> you want to break it down into two steps. give me your fingers. first, a moisturizer.
