recently ordered nielsen to shut down part of the southern border with only 24 hours' notice. >> we have all the details from washington. mona, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, janai and kenneth. homeland security secretary kirsten neith kirsten nielsen's forced exit created a ripple effect leading to an overhaul of the agency, sweeping changes at the homeland security. it started with the forced resignation of the dhs secretary. >> i want to thank the president again for the tremendous opportunity to serve this country. i share the president's goal of securing the border. >> reporter: hours later, the president also fired the director of the secret service, and sources tell abc news more than half of those running agencies within the department of homeland security could be gone by the end of the week. >> can't take you anymore. i'm sorry. can't happen. so turn around. that's the way it is. >> reporter: the systemic purge comes as the president grows increasingly frustrated with inn

asylum seekers at the u.s./mexico border. abc news learned that two weeks ago, a tense oceeeting ended with the president ordering nielsen and secretary of state mike pompeo to shut down a portion of the border, but was dissuaded by aides at the last minute. according to "the new york times," the push for hardline immigration policy is coming from one of the president's closest advisers on the issue, steven miller. they're also urging trump to revisit the idea of family separation. "the times" reports the new binary choice policy would force migrants to choose between, quote, voluntarily allowing their children to be separated from them, or to waive their child's humanitarian protections so the family can be detained together. and today, kenneth, besides the internal pushback, trump's policies have also been challenged by the two other branches of government. last month, congress passed a bipartisan bill blocking the president's declaration of a national emergency at the border and just yesterday, a judge blocked the administration's efforts to force migrants to

wait in mexico while their cases are being processed. janai, kenneth? >> all right, mona. president trump facing legal setbacks. federal prosecutors say the woman arrested for trying to enter president trump's mar-a-lago club, quote, lies to everyone she meets. the 32-year-old chinese national was keeping $8,000 in her hotel room along with a device that can find hidden cameras. they are looking into whether she was a spy. now to that major terror plot foiled near washington. according to police, the suspect was targeting a tourist site about ten miles from the capital, claiming he was inspired by isis. abc's marci gonzalez has more. >> reporter: this is the stolen u-haul authorities say a would-be terrorist planned to use to commit mass murder. the justice department saying officials stopped 28-year-old rondell henry just in the nick of time. hours, even minutes before the isis sympathizer was prepared to die for his cause. >> we and the agents were able to piece this together and understand that this was not simply a person in a stolen vehicle, but posed a greater

threat. >> reporter: according to the criminal complaint, on march 26th, henry stole this truck with the intent of plowing it through a crowd full of people, allegedly driving it around washington, d.c. looking for possible targets, but deciding not to strike. the next morning, authorities say henry drove the van to the airport, but didn't find as many people outside as he hoped. he allegedly told investigators that he walked into the terminal trying to find a way through security to harm disbelievers, but then gave up. he drove the u-haul to national harbor in maryland, a tourist area with restaurants and a ferris wheel. he says, he wanted to create panic and chaos. i was just going to keep driving and driving and driving, he said. i wasn't going to stop. >> you don't really have to have a lot of planning to drive over people on a sidewalk, and that's what's scary about this crime, is right out of the isis playbook, the low tech, easy to do, lone actor. >> reporter: but he told investigators the crowds were thin, so he broke into a boat

and hid there overnight. when he tried to return to the u-haul the next morning, police were waiting for him. >> all of those entities together have prevented pointless violence. >> reporter: henry faces a maximum of ten years in prison if convicted. marci gonzalez, abc news, washington. yet another democrat is making a run for the white house. congressman eric swalwell of california announced his bid on "the late show with stephen colbert" becoming candidate number 18 in the race for 2020. swalwell is taking up the fight against gun violence. today he's holding a town hall on the issue in florida. right now voters are heading to the polls in israel where prime minister benjamin netanyahu is facing a fifth term. he faces a stiff challenge over corruption allegations. president trump is a close ally of netanyahu's, and the white house denies trying to boost his campaign in recent days with statements about iran's military and the golden heights. yes, it's spring, but another so-called bomb cyclone

ravenelle were supposed to come home from the dominican republic march 27th. they checked out of their hotel, but never made their flight. the state department says it's aware of the situation. two months ago, it issued a travel warning about crime in that country. the cdc is reporting a surge in the number of people coming down with measles across the country. nearly 80 new cases in just one week. that brings the total number of cases reported this year to 465. most of those patients were not vaccinated. health officials in new york are now threatening to close schools that allow unvaccinated kids to atte attend. so replacing paper money with coins no longer makes a lot of sense. that's the conclusion from a government watchdog. for years, people argued that eliminating paper bills would save the government money because bills were out so much faster than coins, but a new study found that paper bills are lasting about five years longer likely because so many americans are going cashless paying with credit cards instead. >> makes sense. the new rankings are out for

huffman has agreed to plead guilty on mail fraud that college admissions scandal. >> it will ensure our kids beat them out. >> how generous? >> $15,000. >> reporter: "the desperate housewives" star saying she will plead guilty to paying 15 thousand dollars to have an s.a.t. proctor correct her daughter's test answers. in a statement, huffman says, i am in full acceptance of my guilt, and with deep regret and shame over what i have done, adding, especially, i want to apologize to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices to support their children and do so honestly. she also spoke directly about her daughter, writing, my daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, i have betrayed her. this transgression toward her and the public i will carry for the rest of my life. huffman is 1 of 13 parents now agreeing to plead guilty in the operation varsity blues case. in all, they paid out more than
