with us on this very busy thursday morning. that major spring blizzard is a live look at denver, the storm shutting down parts of a major interstate this morning. >> ginger will bring us the latest on that. first, that breaking news, wikileaks founder julian assange arrested in london. after seven years of asylum in the ecuadoran embassy, the ecuadoran government released assange to british authorities and he could now face charges in the u.s. abc's david wright starts us off from london. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, george. he is now inside this magistrate's court here in london, the beginning of what is likely to likely to be many court cases. he conspired with chelsea manning to hack computers and

classified documents relating to the war in afghanistan. chelsea manning was pardoned by president obama. now it's julian assange's turn, and for the past seven years, he has been holed up inside the ecuadoran embassy in london. he sought assay lyluasylum, but government withdrew that protection, inviting authorities in, and they frog marched him out. >> you saw assange resisting there. wikileaks has put out a tweet saying his rights must be protected and that's being echoed by the kremlin. >> reporter: that's right, george. russian president vladimir putin tweeted this morning that he hopes that assange's rights will be protected moving forward. the british foreign secretary said that he will get his day in court, and as he put it, assange is not a hero, that it is right

for him to face justice for these alleged crimes. now he's likely to face a number of court hearings inside this courthouse before it's determined what will become of him. because here in britain and across the european union, they do not have the death penalty if there is even the possibility assange could face the death penalty back in the u.s., that would pose a significant barrier to her extradition. in any case, any possible extradition proceeding is also subject to appeal. appeal not just within the british courts, but also within the european courts of human rights. so it is likely this process is going to take some time, but today after seven long years, this case is now finally moving forward, george. >> david wright, thanks very much. michael? >> thank you, george. now to that monster blizzard that's hitting right now. the threat is stretching across 22 states and our team is spread out across the storm zone. ginger starts us off with the latest on the track and the timing. good morning, ginger. >> michael, we're in the heart

of this blizzard happening now. you can see highways already shut down. this is interstate 35 in minnesota, just south of minneapolis. shut down for a time because of so many accidents. let's go ahead and look at how big this is. it's impacting folks from colorado to pennsylvania and new york, but the heart of it again were those blizzard warnings from south dakota into nebraska, parts of kansas and minnesota and even northeastern colorado still. we have got hours left. i'm talking nearly 24 hours to go with this storm, but it's also wind. not just in the blizzard area but from iowa down to mississippi and alabama we'll be talking about up to 50 mile-per-hour winds and storms that could cause things like this, a gustnado in colorado. st. cloud schools closed. minneapolis schools closed. alex perez right there for us. >> reporter: good morning, ginger. this is what a lot of people are waking up to here this morning, snow-covered cars and take a look, sidewalks and streets are slippery. we want to show you a second camera, another view. you can see that wind that you

were talking about, that snow blowing in the wind and a lot of places since the snow started falling it hasn't stopped. overnight, a powerful spring storm bringing blizzard-like conditions and now starting to pummel the midwest. >> if anybody is smart, they won't drive, period. >> reporter: in south dakota winds over 50 mile-per-hour creating whiteout conditions. a major interstate shut down for 100 miles. roads littered with wreck after wreck around denver. colorado's governor activating the national guard to respond to stranded drivers. in minnesota -- >> it's slick out there. >> reporter: -- tractor-trailers jackknifing in slick conditions, leading to these wrecks. cars creeping down roads in the blinding conditions, barely able to navigate the elements. this bridge collapsing after ice buildup caused the wood pilings to give way. the driver of this ups

semi-truck in kansas driving right off the overpass. in montana this suv barrelling down the road starts sliding just missing an emergency crewman. and in idaho just outside boise, a small town cut off by rising waters. residents airlifted to safety. in amarillo, texas wind wreaking havoc. watch as this semi tractor-trailer is tossed on its si and schools are closed here in st. cloud and minneapolis and in many places across the region here's the bad news, this storm is going to linger in a lot of areas all day. robin? >> okay, alex. we're seeing the ripple effects of that snow at airports across the country. more than 1,000 flights canceled or delayed since wednesday. senior transportation correspondent david kerley is at reagan national airport just outside washington with more. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, robin. it's going to be a difficult day for those trying to fly across the country. the first wave of flights taking

off this morning and already before it started 400 flights canceled for today. that's on top of the 1,000 flights canceled on wednesday. three-quarters of those were canceled in the denver area. of course the storm has now moved on. the problem area is minneapolis today. the airport already struggling there. now, the airlines tell us they're prepared for this storm but as i mentioned, it is going to be another difficult day if you're hoping to fly because it does ripple through the entire system. michael? >> yes, they will feel the ripple effect of that, david. now back to ginger with more on where the threat is heading next. ginger? >> ready, set, let's track it. that low pressure system impacting minnesota back to south dakota all the way through 5:00 p.m. tonight. it goes into northern michigan and wisconsin and then starts to loosen. by tomorrow night we stop talking about it but what it leaves behind, still an additional one to two feet of snow with 60 mile-per-hour winds. you could see sleet and freezing rain on top of all of this. guys, there's so many components to this. we'll talk about the severe storms in just a bit. george? >> ginger, thanks.

we move to washington now where the white house and congress democrats are locked in a battle on two fronts with the treasury department refusing overnight to release the president's tax returns and attorney general william barr just days before the release of the mueller report drawing fire from the democrats for this testimony. >> i think spying on a political campaign is a big deal. it's a big deal. >> so you're not -- you're not suggesting though that spying occurred? >> i don't -- well, i guess you could -- i think that spying did occur, yes. i think spying did occur. >> let's bring in our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce for more on this. barr backtracked on those comments but this echoed some of trump's inflammatory talking points. >> reporter: george, for months the president has been saying he believes the u.s. government spied on his campaign and now you have the attorney general there seeming to say that he agrees. barr did later say he has no

specific evidence of wrongdoing but says he's assembling a team to look into all of this. this is exactly what the president has been demanding, an investigation into the russia investigation. democrats i've talked to are alarmed by barr's comments and they say he's simply doing the president's bidding here. house speaker nancy pelosi saying that bill barr is the attorney general of the united states, not the attorney general of president trump. >> yeah, and they say much of that investigation has already been done. meantime, that battle over the president's tax returns, we heard from the treasury secretary overnight making it pretty clear they weren't going to comply with that congressional question any time soon. >> reporter: it seems more likely that this fight is headed towards the courts. overnight the treasury secretary saying they're not going to be complying with democrats' demands. he says he's questioning the legal implications of this request and he says it could leave americans open to limited information of their tax return information. he says that he didn't reveal tax information last time and he got elected. he says, quote, frankly the people don't care, but george, democrats are not giving up this

fight. they're going to double down on this request. >> mary bruce, thanks very much. robin? george, now to that breaking news overnight. the son of a sheriff's deputy is under arrest, accused of starting those fires at three historically black churches in louisiana. steve osunsami joins us now with the latest. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. the governor of louisiana is making this announcement this morning with the atf, the state fire marshal and the fbi by his side. they are calling what happened despicable. a u.s. attorney is confirming this morning that federal authorities have arrested a man for setting black churches on fire in louisiana, and law enforcement sources tell our local abc station, katc, that he's the son of a parish deputy. authorities have not yet publicly identified the suspect but those law enforcement sources say he's this man, 21-year-old holden matthews. matthews is now in custody after he was arrested wednesday evening.

he's accused of intentionally setting those fires at three black churches over ten days, the first on march 26th burned the st. mary's baptist church t greater union baptist just miles away and a third fire at mt. pleasant baptist. at one of the churches, we found burned bibles and hymn books. the fire marshal immediately suspected they were looking for an arsonist who was targeting black churches. >> at this point we believe there's some relation, whether it's a single person, a single technique, a single method. >> reporter: as they search for who did this, the people at the three churches continued to raise their praise. ♪ everything's gonna be all right ♪ but had to do it somewhere else. other churches lent them spaces. now they say they are relieved and ready to move forward. >> it's time to rebuild. it's time for healing. it's time for strengthening up our congregation and our families. >> reporter: these churches will now need to be completely

rebuilt and they are beginning the effort to raise money for that. george. >> steve osunsami, thanks very much. we move now to the investigation of that gas explosion in durham, north carolina that killed one person, injured 17 others. the blast went off when firefighters were responding to a gas leak. our chief national affairs correspondent, tom llamas is on the scene with the latest in durham. good morning, tom. >> reporter: george, good morning. take a look just behind me. this is where the explosion happened. this was a two-story building in the middle of durham, north carolina, a building that was made of bricks. this explosion was so powerful it pancaked the entire structure, shooting brick and glass everywhere. five other buildings also affected. eye witnesses say it felt like an earthquake, first the blast and then a massive blaze. survivors running from the area covered in blood, some unable to walk. this all started with a gas leak. firefighters were on the scene evacuating buildings but there apparently wasn't enough time to get everyone out. the owner of a beloved coffee d.

the store posted that they would be closed. they put that post up right before the explosion. 17 others injured, 6 in critical condition including a firefighter. he had to undergo s tele'sord . eyewitnesss tell us it felt like an earthquake, but sounded like a plane crash. >> tom, what are officials learning about what caused this? >> reporter: well, city officials right now say they're still investigating, but preliminary reports say there was a construction crew in the area. they were digging under the sidewalks and hit a natural gas line, and george, 30 minutes later that happened. >> tom llamas, thanks very much. >> thank you, george. also breaking overnight, an american airlines flight departing from new york's kennedy airport forced to make an emergency landing after striking an object during takeoff. take a look at this picture taken by one of the passengers that shows the damage to the plane's wing. one of the passengers said the plane went sideways in the air before the pilot could

this is really a hiker's worst nightmare. two advanced hikers in a relatively populated area just lost the path, but it was their experience and an ingenious tool that kept them alive. overnight, the frantic search for these two hikers lost for nearly five days is finally over. eric desplinter and gabrielle wallace had been hiking on mt. baldy near san bernardino, california. rescue teams had spent the week scouring some 19,000 acres. helicopters taking to the skies. >> there's still quite a bit of ice and snow on the grounds. a lot of north-facing slopes still have a lot of ice. >> reporter: their car left in the parking lot. search teams leaving a note on the windshield in case they returned. a set of footprints eventually leading search teams to the young couple. >> we were very grateful to be found tonight. >> reporter: moments after being found, desplinter revealing just how they survived. >> rationed our food. drank water through a life straw. >> reporter: a life straw, essentially a portable filter

nap nipsey will be remembered today inside the staples center for his celebration of life service. 21,000 people will be packed in here. they gave away free tickets to those 21,000, those tickets gone within minutes. nipsey hussle's family has kept the guest list private. they're not telling us exactly who will be performing but it is expected there will be some high level people and very high level security both public and private. the lapd offering their assistance as well. just a few miles from here, there's going to be a funeral procession. that is a 25-mile route going through so many of the neighborhoods where nipsey devoted his time, advocated for, invested in. we can't even tell you how many thousands will be lining these streets. the energy here is so palpable after his loss but that funeral procession will pass by the intersection where he was gunned down in front of his clothing store. the man accused of killing nipsey hussle, eric holder, has pled not guilty, robin. >> adrienne, more and more people are now becoming familiar with his music.

it's the kind of 911 call nightmares are made of. >> i think there's an intruder in one of the bathrooms. >> reporter: a stranger in the house. >> okay, are you inside as well? >> yes. but the bathroom door is locked. we see a shadow moving around and the door is closed. >> reporter: with no time to waste, the police rush in with the canine unit ready to attack and guns drawn. >> police responding. come out or you may get bit. >> we're giving demands to the suspect in the bathroom, sheriff's office, come out with your hands up. >> reporter: but no response. >> each time i gave commands, my initial thought is, okay, now we've got this person barricaded in the bathroom. now he's trying to get out through that small bathroom window. >> reporter: so the officers make their way through the house clearing each room as they go until they reach the bathroom and hear the intruder still inside. >> we're going to this bathroom door fully expecting to have to deal with a burglar in the house at gunpoint. >> reporter: finally, they open

his case. the official charge from the united states that he conspired with chelsea manning to hack computers and publish classified defense department documents. the big wikileaks dump that we all remember from nearly ten years ago now. chelsea manning went to jail for those charges and was ultimately pardoned. now it's assange's turn to have his day in court and it has been a day long delayed. for seven years, he was holed up inside the ecuadoran embassy under their protection first as an asylum seeker and then as a citizen. then they withdrew its protection of assange, making clear the way for him to be brought here and possibly extradited back to the states. that is likely to be a time-consuming process and one that is subject to appeal, but the clock begins ticking again today, george. >> thanks very much. robin? george, now to that spring

blizzard that's hitting the heartland. 22 states are under snow and high wind alerts. back to ginger who's tracking the latest, and it's becoming a travel nightmare. >> and you know it is a powerful snowstorm when you see reports and you see images of thunder snow, robin. this is what you're seeing there. that is lightning that comes just like a thunderstorm but instead of rain falling, you have snow. so you know there's a lot of power in it. there's power in what it does to the roads. interstate 35 south of minneapolis was shut for a time because of so many slide-offs. the visibility down. remember, winds gusting with these blizzard conditions somewhere between 40 and 60 miles per hour. look at south dakota, i wish i could tell you these are old images. unfortunately, it's relatively slow moving and with it not just the snow but the wind ahead of the front there. pueblo, colorado had a gustnado. plenty of things to talk about from wisconsin and michigan and those winter storm warnings, down to the advisories in alabama and mississippi and back to sk of course, the heart of i nebraska and south dakota and western minnesota for the next 24 hours. we'll be talking about an additional 1 to 2 feet of snow

and again, the wind gusts on top of all of that. robin? >> and it is april. okay, ginger, thank you. michael. >> thank you, robin. we're going to turn now to some royal news that's just in. meghan and harry announcing their plans for the royal baby this morning. abc news james longman is in london with how the duke and duchess are doing things their own way. top of the morning to you, james. >> reporter: good morning, michael. yeah, anticipation is certainly building this morning. we're now learning the first details of how meghan and harry plan to have their first child. now, unlike william and kate, this will be a far more private affair. in a statement buckingham palace have said the duke and duchess of sussex are grateful for the good will they've received from people throughout the united kingdom and around the world, but their royal highnesses have taken a personal decision to keep the plans around the arrival of their baby private. duchess kate had all three of her children at a london hospital with the media camping outside waiting to catch a glimpse but this will be very different. no details on whether this will be a home birth or at a hospital.

whether they're instagram stars or not, this is the kind of treatment they receive. so when i'm in an advertisement, right, for some people that literally feels like they were cheated. >> reporter: o'brien who has over 300,000 followers on social media says she allowed the company to use her picture to promote body positivity. >> for a lot of people all they see is fat. they don't see the joy, the happiness. >> reporter: but some commenters say the issue is about health, with one adding, this would also be true if they used an anorexic model. still others are defending gillette. now venus is weighing in saying they're committed to representing women of all shapes, sizes and skin types because all types of skin are beautiful and deserve to be shown. >> at the end of the day, bodies are bodies. there are so many different types of them and that's all this is about. >> this all followed some criticism that gillette faced

back in january over an ad campaign critics said targeted masculinity. at the time the company, george, said it doesn't mind sparking a discussion. >> they're doing that again. thanks very much, diane. this morning, we have a first look at a&e's new special "hunting jonbenet's killer." elizabeth vargas spoke with jonbenet's father. she's going to join us after this from stephanie ramos. >> reporter: these are never-before-seen photos of jonbenet ramsey, the 6-year-old beauty pageant queen who was found dead in her colorado home the day after christmas more than 20 years ago. her murderer never found. >> it's a mission of mine to find the killer. >> reporter: jonbenet's father, ries, joenet appearing in a new at the infamous case. >> there's one photo of jonbenet that was taken literally hours before she died.

joins us now. welcome back. great to see you. >> great to be here. >> you really dug into this, a year-long investigation. >> we did. it's 22 years after the murder happened. it's the most notorious unsolved murder in america, a beautiful little girl killed on christmas night in her own home. we examine two new theories with the help of a retired fbi agent, robert clark, who's got great investigative chops in this whole thing. one of the theories came from a tip from an inmate in prison. another theory on a tip from a retired detective in colorado. and the ramseys when they were under suspicion by the boulder police hired his own detective to do his own investigation and he left a list of 25 people that he thinks need to be investigated, need to be dna tested. john ramsey is hoping to start going down that list. >> you can see him still bristle, understandably, to the idea that he and his family were under suspicion. what does he think happened? >> he thinks it was an intruder.

he thinks while the family was out at the fleetwood christmas party, somebody broke into the house, at least one or two people, that they were waiting for them when they got home from the party and went to bed and then they tried to kidnap jonbenet. you have to remember, george, all the logical theories and suspects have been ruled out. there was that dna found on jonbenet's body that so far doesn't match anybody, doesn't match anybody in the ramsey family. they haven't been able to find who it does match, but he believes that it was a kidnapping for hire and that it is bizarre because at this point all the logical theories have been ruled out. >> what a mystery, 22 years later. thanks for coming in this morning. [ applause ] all right, miss kalani brown sitting next to your beautiful mother there. you were drafted yesterday. so what were the emotions for you knowing you were going to play some pro ball? >> i was just overwhelmed with happiness, excitement. i was so anxious just sitting there waiting for your name to be called.

but it was a great experience. >> and now that you are no longer going to play for coach mulkey, give us the real scoop. play blood and guts, none of that. how was it playing for her? >> coach mulkey is tough but i wouldn't be the player i am without her. she's passionate. she's had my back all four years. i'm glad she chose me. >> well, y'all chose each other. the greatest pleasure i have, honestly, robin, is to watch the faces of young people do it for the very first time. i wanted kalani brown, chloe jackson and those players in the locker room to be able to get to a final four. then when we got there i thought, let me be selfish, i want them to win it all. to watch their faces, watch the fans, the baylor fans and how they wanted something positive and good. those moments, i stop and i just look around and go, we're blessed. >> i know and you're blessed hn the classroom. you're all about getting that diploma. >> we graduate our players. in the break room i was talking to kalani and her sister. she finishes up in may. i don't care what the wnba needs her to do, get the degree. >> thank you, ma'am.

welcome back to "gma." back now with our fridge challenge. this is where we take what's already in your refrigerator and turn it into a delicious meal. i love this idea, we don't want you to head to the store. we had so many viewers submitting photos of their refrigerators to ask for help. ryan dow said he and his fiance were sick of their three-meal rotation and needed help so we called in chef robert irvine ne hospital who is here to help ryan. so ryan, you guys were in a real rut i understand? >> yeah. we usually split the cooking duties between my fiance and myself. between work and going to the gym afterwards we come back spent and got stuck with two or three recipes and looking for two or three more. >> i have five so i'm listening closely.

when you see a fridge like ryan's, what's the secret? >> when we go and fix the restaurant, all these ingredients are magic. you just don't know what the magic is until it happens. >> that's correct. this is exactly why we've replicated your refrigerator on the set. you came up with not one, two, but three recipes. we didn't buy a single thing. these are really creative. what are you whipping up first? >> we have a salmon dish which is simple. we take a teriyaki sauce. teriyaki sauce is sweet and savory. orange juice gives us that sweetness. when you caramelize it, that sugar comes out. that's the beautiful stuff you have there. >> would you normally cook with orange juice or you just did it because ryan had it? >> he had it. what's great about orange juice, lemon juice, grapefruit juice, it starts the process of breaking down.

it adds flavor, but it also helps metabolism. ryan, i'm not here to work, you are. >> perfect. >> put all this, carrots, celery, onions, broccoli, jalapenos, pickle, lemon juice in there. we're making a slaw. basically i quick marinate it, put it in the pan. do not shake the pan. the sugar won't come out. if you break the seal, it won't come out. if you take it out of the marinade, dry it first. a little salt and pepper in there. come on, dude. we got to move fast. let's go. i mean, hello. >> it's live tv. >> so, we've got our sauce, on goes the salmon. on goes the slaw. merry christmas, number one. >> there you go. number two, you made a turkey pepperoni pizza slider. what did you use from ryan's refrigerator? >> literally, tomato sauce, cheese, turkey pepperoni and butter, a bun, toast the bun,

tomato sauce on the base of the bun followed by some cheese. >> any kind of cheese. >> any kind of cheese but he had goat cheese. pepperoni, cheddar on the top, cover the pan, 15 minutes in the oven. done. >> all right, that's two. one final recipe. you really had to get creative on this. hurry, hurry. >> you saw the sausage. we took the skin off the sausage. it's dead. put it in, fried it. we've got pickles, some onions. >> this looks really good. >> mustard. get in there. come on, you got to really move fast. >> literally it's turkey sausage, it's eggs, a fried egg on top. you guys used relish but you could use a pickle if you have pickles in your fridge, and, yes, everybody follow robert, not ryan. >> here's the cool thing. we have on the bottom, he had red pepper hummus on the base instead of mayonnaise, turkey on the top. >> creative.
