>> it doesn't matter if the sun is out. talk to us about the fact that we are seeing more diagnosis of melanoma. is it better detection? >> there are a number of things. alarmingly, if you look at the number of skin cancers diagnosed in the united states, it exceeds all other cancers. melanoma has been increasing. we know we've seen an 8% increase in the melanomas diagnosed. about 200,000 are diagnosed a year and one american dies every hour from melanoma. >> what does this mean for the mortality rate? >> the mortality 58th going down for two reasons. number one, we're diagnosing it earlier. and number two, we have better treatments for the invasive melanomas. >> are there certain types that you're seeing more often than not? >> well, melanoma is melanoma. so there are not different types. the key is early detection and

early diagnosis. the thinner the melanoma, the higher likelihood of a cure. and with melanoma, we used to think of it as a death sentence but that's not usually the case. most are cured of their disease. >> so early detection. i was just talking to you about going in for my check soon. my husband as well. is is that the best thing you can do? get checked every year? >> i think for someone who has never had skin cancer, an annual skin check can go a long way. for patients with skin cancer, we check they wll every six months. and there are things you can to at home to protect yourself. number one is sun screen every day. number two is avoid the sun when it is at its peak. use protective clothing. and key, no tanning beds. >> that's a big one. anything else you specifically want people to take away? >> get themselves checked every year by a board certified
