there she goes. there she goes. implosion of the old route 47 missouri river bridge in washington, missouri. it's about 50 miles west of st. louis. thousands watched from a safe distance as the old bridge was taken down. obviously it's been replaced by a newer one. crews are working to clear the debris so river traffic can resume. a 20-month-old toddler outside seattle has miraculously survived a six-story fall out of an apartment window. >> hard to believe, but it was a car parked under the window breaking his fall that police say saved that little boy's life. >> police say the boy pushed through the screen of a window that was cracked open and fell out. this morning the boy's hospitalized in serious but stable condition. turning now to another

remarkable story of survival involving that california couple who had been missing for days in the mountains of southern california. >> this morning we're seeing for the first time newly released video of their dramatic rescue. here's abc's will carr. >> reporter: a first look at the harrowing helicopter rescue of two hikers stuck in pitch-black perilous conditions. rescuers spotted a fire sparked by the hikers who had been lost for almost five days. >> doing good? >> yeah. >> all right. >> reporter: amazingly, both were in good condition but were stuck between two rock falls on one of the most dangerous mountains in the united states. >> we just lost the trail. >> reporter: eric desplinter, a former national guardsman who served in afghanistan, and gabrielle wallace, set out for a day hike last saturday. >> we tried to descend through a valley but that valley was more treacherous than we thought. >> reporter: these are experienced hikers but this is rough, rugged terrain where one

ymorning, guys. jim mcglynn's career is remarkable not only because it spans more than three decades but because of what it means to a healing city and how it's inspired so many. sdny battalion chief jim mcglynn look back at a career that spans 34 years. >> this job takes you in, molds you, makes you something that you weren't. >> reporter: including one of city's darkest days. september 11th, 2001, jim was in the "b" staircase of the north tower of the world trade center evacuating people. >> we were in the staircase when the building came down. trying to get a grasp of the situation, the extent of the collapse, whether it was the entire building, whether it was both buildings. >> reporter: five hours later, jim, pulled from the rubble, one of the last people to walk away alive. >> i believe i was the last person out. the whole magnitude of the collapse kind of really hit you. you realize how lucky you are to >> reporter: jim staying with the fdny for the next 18 years, rising to captain, then to battalion chief, finishing out a remarkable career in the bronx where he grew up.

one person killed in a crash near the denver airport. also in colorado, a state trooper was injured when his car was hit by another driver. on the ground and in the air, chaos. thousands of flights grounded or delayed in the last 24 hours. this as whole communities are in the dark. downed power lines there on the left. about 25,000 without power in minnesota. shaky power lines amid the roughly 4,500 power outages in south dakota. some interstates shut down. many are still trying to reopen. the sheriff's department in south dakota with this warning. >> the roads are terrible. >> reporter: and the snow is piling up here as crews work around the clock to try to keep roads clear. already more than 500 crashes reported across minnesota. visibility is a big problem. some areas dealing with 70-mile-per-hour wind gusts creating those very, very dangerous near whiteout conditions.

alex perez, abc news, st. cloud, minnesota. >> hard to believe we are in april. here's a quick look at the forecast. part of that same system is moving into the northeast, bringing some rain and a few thunderstorms. >> plan on 2 to 4 more inches of snow from the eastern dakotas to the great lakes, some showers and thunderstorms in the southwest, more snow in the rockies, and stormy across the south. we will keep a check on the weather throughout this morning. the lawyer that took on president trump on behalf of adult film star stormy daniels is facing a new batch of federal charges that could land him in prison for the rest of his life. >> michael avenatti is accused of cheating on his taxes, lying to investigators, and stealing millions of dollars from his clients. prosecutors say he used the money to fund a lavish lifestyle. abc's matt gutman has the details. >> reporter: michael avenatti famously crowed that he won millions for his clients. prosecutors are saying that for several of those clients, what he won, he mostly pocketed. >> mr. avenatti received the

money on behalf of clients and simply took the money to finance his businesses and his personal expenses. >> reporter: a federal grand jury indicting the flashy l.a. attorney on 36 counts of fraud, perjury, and failing to pay taxes. the types of crimes he so often accused president trump of committing. avenatti now accused of stealing millions from his clients to finance a luxury lifestyle that included a chain of coffee shops which he advertised on his racecar suit. a big home. even a jet which prosecutors say he used client money to buy. >> mr. avenatti allegedly took nearly all that money and used it to pay for his portion of a private jet. a jet, incidentally, that we seized. >> reporter: there it is being towed away from a southern california airport. >> it is lawyer 101. you do not steal your clients' money. >> reporter: one of the alleged victims, jeffrey johnson, is a paraplegic. prosecutors say avenatti drained almost all the $4 million he got in a settlement from l.a.

county, giving johnson only money for rent at an assisted living facility. the man's lawyers saying avenatti's actions have left mr. johnson destitute. avenatti, who is already facing extortion charges in new york, has been characteristically defiant, denying all of the allegations. >> i will be fully exonerated, and justice will be done. thank you. >> reporter: if convicted on all of those charges, avenatti faces a combined maximum of nearly 400 years in prison. that is a life sentence. and tonight we are told that the prosecutor's office is aware of additional victims and additional indictments are possible. now avenatti again denying all of these allegations saying he's innocent. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. >> our thanks to matt gutman there. the city of chicago has made good on its promise to sue actor jussie smollett. the city is seeking to recoup the costs of investigating smollett's claims that he was the victim of a racist anti-gay attack. chicago claims it spent more

than $130,000 in police overtime. the civil suit against smollett says chicago is seeking at least three times that amount. smollett is refusing to pay. all charges against him were dropped last month. the hallmark channel has taken some extraordinary steps to remove actress lori loughlin from her former show. she's been edited out of new episodes of "one calls the heart." hallmark cut ties over allegations of the college admissions scandal. a man accused of taking the tests is expected to plead guilty to several counts today. mark rydell could still face prison time. he's likely to have to forfeit nearly $240,000 he made from the scheme. now to julian assange facing extradition to the u.s. after he was arrested in london. the disheveled wikileaks founder was evicted by ecuador and dragged from its embassy where he had been holed up for seven years.

the indictment accuses assange of conspiring to hack pentagon computers with former u.s. soldier chelsea manning. but his attorneys are fighting extradition. they say assange is a journalist being prosecuted for publishing truthful information about the united states. the new trump administration policy that places restrictions on transgender service members is now in effect. starting today the pentagon is requiring everyone serving to adhere to the standard associated with their biological sex, even if it's different from their expressed gender. the ban does not apply to service members who have already transitioned. it's currently being challenged in court as unconstitutional. four veterans of world war ii have made a special visit to the oval office. >> president trump hosted the celebration of the four men who are 95, 100, 101, and 103. the 103-year-old, the president joked, you don't look a day over 90. trump also told the group, i want to be like all of you someday.
