>> good morning, bay area. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. >> it's saturday, april 13th, good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with the first look at the forecast. here's lisa argen tracking live doppler. >> we have plenty of sunshine and pleasant weather on the way. you can see some of the fog banked up along the coast and visibility is good and we are looking at temperatures around 50 degrees, san francisco, san jose, 51 by the delta and a live look outside. nice and clear and that will pave the way for a sunny day today. so looking at that sun coming up at 6:37, plenty of sunshine with

upper 60s. inland by noon time at the coast about 10 degrees cooler and later on today it will be a beautiful day at the beach with 60s there and even upper 60s in some spots, to the upper 70s around the bay and nice and dry, evening. we will increase the clouds for your sunday and yes, there are april showers in my seven-day outlook. >> thank you. developing news, for the third time since february concrete has fall own the richmond-san rafael bridge. traffic is moving fine on this saturday morning, but that could change as the morning progresses on. lanes have been closed nightly because of emergency repair work which is what you see here. crews are predicting the work will take three months and lower deck repairs will start next year. the third incident happened on the eastbound side of 580 on the high-rise. it's unclear if this is related to the two previous incidents.

just last thursday chunks fell as a result of repair work to fix one of the 31 sliding plate joints on the upper deck of the bridge. traffic in the eastbound direction was stopped for hours the next day while crews inspected the bridge deck. a separate, unrelated incident saw concrete chunks fall on to the lower deck february 7th. in the east bay, a family is on edge this morning after being targeted twice this week by a suspected arsonist. the latest fire forced the mother and son to escape their berkeley apartment through their balcony. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has more. >> lives could have been lost. >> reporter: berkeley neighbors are fearful after a fire broke out at this apartment on stanton street. the chart entry is off limits. >> there was an uber driver on the corner. he saw what happened and banged on our door and told us to come outside. i initially grabbed a fire extinguisher thinking it was something small, but the guy told us it was something way bigger.

>>a mother and son inside the apartment were trapped by the flames and they were rescued by firefighters. >> people were brought down the back off the balcony and evaluated by the medics. >> the fire department believes the fire was no accident. it was intentionally set. >> we did find what appeared to be some rags or a fabric that had some flammable liquid on it. >> the battalion chief reported witnesses reported a man running away from the fire and on tuesday officials say a molotov cocktail was thrown at a window in the same apartment, but likely missed. ashley's mom saw it land. >> my mom came out and put the fire out with the fire extinguisher the first time because it was small. >> police are investigating. they don't know why the family was targeted. neighbors are worried about their open safety. >> i want to catch this person because it's the least that we can do. >> i hope somebody can come out and say if they saw anything because that's somebody's life. >> authorities say there is no description on the man seen

running away from the fire. mother and son were not hurt. we are told they have moved to a new apartment. in berkeley, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. a 12-year-old girl says her classmate had been bullying her for months. after the i-team's dan noyes demanded answers about the school's handling of the case. the school has suspended the principal and the teacher in that classroom. dan has the story you will see only on 7. [ screaming ] >> reporter: what sets this attack apart from others we've seen is the teacher's response. look at the beginning of the video again. that's stewart elementary 7th grade teacher jeremy cooper raising his hands and walking away. >> i was very shocked that he didn't do anything because most teachers just go and try to stop it, but he didn't do anything. >> reporter: the beating 12-year-old valoria lasted 40 seconds. >> she told me she hit me.

>> her mother saw her daughter's bruises and took her to the hospital for evaluation and thankfully no serious injuries. the enormity of what happened didn't sink in until she saw the video the next day. it circulated among students and social media. >> i never thought i would see my child have to go through this. >> it made me sad that my mom was crying. >> carla gamboa first complained about her daughter being bullied, discussing the teasing about her height, her friends and even during class. >> i couldn't focus and i want to learn and not just hear her always talking about me and saying stuff. >> the mom started keeping a list of alleged incidents the other students posted a track. >> she's a ho, ho, ho, ho. >> she's a school bus driver herself and carla tells me after she complained to the west contra costa unified school district again, the bullying

stopped for a while and then came the classroom beating on march 25th and she confronted principal peter aloo. >> i said now what are you going to do? i told you last time that i wanted to avoid this to happen and it was just a matter of time. he said i don't know, i can't tell you what i'm going to do. i was, like, are you serious? carla kept valoria home for two weeks and the school never called to check on her daughter or to provide make-up work so i went to the school this week. >> she started beating her and pulling her hair and stuff. >> and with their parent's permission spoke with students who were there during the attack. >> i just thought it was stupid and crazy. >> why do you need to fight her? >> val was just trying to, like, trying to avoid the fight, but she got beat up really bad. >> principal aloo and jeremy cooper would not come out to discuss what happened. i waited for hours and they left without my seeing them p. i returned to watch the

principal's parking place empty and her mother went to a district official. >> was there an apology? >> there was. they accepted that they dropped the ball. >> the school district told me they would e-mail a statement about the case, but i went to the head quarters to press for an interview and called superintendent matt duffy coming out of a meeting. >> we are certainly disturbed by what happened in that classroom, and we've taken disciplinary action and both the teacher and principal are on administrative leave at this time which should give you some idea of how we feel the handling of the situation went. >> the family has obtained a temporary restraining order and the family ordered the alleged bull toe have no contact with valoria and to stay three yards away from her, but they still both go to the same school. >> i've not been able to reach the other family in the story. valoria's mom has filed a police report and wants to press charges and wants to talk to a lawyer about suing the school. dan noyes, abc 7 news.

>> this administration continues to use petty politics and really just vitriolic rhetoric to advance a racist agenda. this is not american. >> san francisco mayor london breed issued a statement responding to president trump saying, quote, like so many issues we are forced to talk about this presidency. this isn't a real idea or a real proposal. it's just another scare tactic and we are proud to be a sanctuary city and to continue to put forward proposals to support our immigrant communities. building a better bay area sometimes begins with a choice to do so. a former san francisco giant's opener threw the first pitch. now referred to justin cristian. his love for the bay area led to a career in law enforcement. amanda del castillo has the story. >> reporter: back on the baseball field, but in a different uniform.

searching for the thieves who stole a van from a concord day care center. it's the day care's second van to be stolen this week and the third stolen this year. the van was taken from the diane dare day care center's parking lot on west street just after 5:30 yesterday morning. police did confirm it was not the same van stolen earlier this week. that one was recovered and it's still in the shop. in the north bay, part of a massive sculpture stolen from the lawn of the community center has been found. artist doug's 6 foot hammer head was found on the sonoma county property without the handle. the piece named the hammer was stolen in early october.

he will restore and return the piece. a three-foot nail marks the spot where the nail once stood. a san francisco restaurant is not only gaining popularity for its great food, but what's on the walls. the wallpaper in nbc 7 spoke to the artist about its craft. >> reporter: it started with a picture, a perfect instagram picture from foodies like this one. >> first of all, i would never post anything that i did not actually like. >> it is the background of every photo with bay area history. >> for us, we are proud to be a neighborhood restaurant and everyone on this wallpaper represented something in the bay area. >> fiorella,'s owner said never thought it would be known for the wall. ? now talking about the characters on the wall we had to meet the

usual pattern around here will feel spring like tomorrow and more so on monday. 52 in belmont. it is 48 in san mateo at 49 in san bruno and cooler numbers out in the inland valleys and 46 in livermore with 47 up to the north in napa. so looking at the exploratorium camera and it will be a beautiful day today. sunny, mild and warmer today. cooler tomorrow. we will increase the clouds for second half of the afternoon and spreng time showers arrive for monday, but it's a good thing because wait until you see the temperatures for monday. we are looking at above-average readings then. 72 in santa cruz. 66 half moon bay and lots of sunshine and the uv index will be high and those winds up to 20 miles an hour and a bit of a sea breeze and ocean beach, 66. the pollen getting out of control with moderate to high conditions today and pretty bad tomorrow. you can see right on through

monday. sufferers will certainly be having a rough time of it and better on tuesday. the trend for the bay area will b for the warmer weather today. this is concord, 77 and cooler tomorrow. low 70s and the coolest day will be monday. here's where we're looking at a weather system arriving and bringing a few april showers and the numbers rebound and we'll see 80s by the end of the week and certainly getting into the warmest weather we've seen in the five or six months in the next five days and starting out clear. lots of sunshine and here's the second half of the day. 3:00 in the north bay, increasing clouds and that will be the trend throughout the rest of the afternoon. so get out there early, if you want the sun otherwise still mild out there. this is monday waking up to dry conditions after the morning commute. the rain will move in by midday and we'll look at the scattered showers right on in through the evening commute and it should be over with through the overnight hours on monday. >> it will be a one on the storm

impact scale anywhere from a couple hundreds to a tenth of an inch and up in the north bay, we can see about 0.2. highs today it will be warmer, sunny and temperatures in the upper 70s and 76 in santa rosa. oakland with the mid and upper 60s from the coast into san francisco and mid to upper 60s shoreline with mid-70s along the bay and cooler with the increasing clouds tomorrow by 2 to 4 degrees and the showers arrive with cooler weather on monday and 1 on the storm impact scale and after that, we're clearing and the drying trend continues with warmer weather through the middle of the week and wow, it looks like summer by the end of the week and a little bit of everything for the next seven days. >> this is a forecast i can get behind. lisa, thank you. just ahead, a preview of

live. >> hi, chris. we timed this one out just right for your saturday starting out at 50 degrees in san francisco. 49 in san mateo. 48 in napa. not too cool, but we will be looking at a day today warmer than yesterday and temperatures will be above average so starting out 10:00, everybody is in the 60s except right at the coast and plenty of sunshine. throughout the 2:00 hour we have low to mid 70s inland and upper 50s at the coast and still sunny, warm, mid-60s to near 70 degrees and we'll look for another pretty nice day to start your sunday and that's where the changes arrive and i'll detail that with my accuweather seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> lisa, thank you. >> in the north bay, santa rosa police are investigating an attempted robbery at a camera store caught on camera. the victims did not go quietly. wayne friedman shows us what happened. >> reporter: shutterbug camera in santa rosa is always a busy

store, but when security cameras picked up three young men entering the front door with open backpacks who then spread out, the employees began to think they might be up to no good. >> i heard the door and saw them on the screen and saw them. >> i yelled out he's grabbing stop. >> jonathan parnell and mark pafky, three of the eight people working jumped behind the case, grabbed gear and encountered something they hadn't planned on, resistance. >> in most situations like this stores have policies to de-es crate situations before they get worse. this store had a history and it had been robbed before. so employees blocked the front door and wrestled with them, later they learned the suspect his a gun and that's mike in the red shirt. >> what made you challenge these guys? >> instinct. unfortunately, we're not supposed to and we had to tell the staff not to because we don't want anyone getting hurt,

but it's personal for us. >> especially in a store that's been robbed in the past. of the three suspects, one got away, at least one of the other two is a juvenile, 14 years old. >> the people that are that desperate to try to come into a family-owned shop and try something like that and it's a shame for the kids and it's a shame for society ney general, i think. >> so you get bit on the arm by one of the guys? >> i got bit on the arm when we were struggling on the ground. >> as business returned to normal they know it could have been worse, a lot worse. >> it was something that we all did for each other. >> in santa rosa, wayne friedman, abc 7 news. a former florida prep school administrator has pleaded guilty to rigging students' entrance exam scores in the cheating scheme. mark riddell was among 50 people charged last month and authorities say he was paid $10,000 a pop to take entrance exams in place of the students or correct their answers.

under a plea agreement riddell will have to forfeit $200,000 that he learned from the scheme and we are learning that federal prosecutors in boston have sent letters to some of the adult children involved in the scheme and like their parents, they, too, will face charges. time now is 5:33. in san francisco lawmakers are trying to reduce the traffic on the crooked part of lombard street. assemblyman will detail the legislation on monday. it will include charging drivers a fee to drive down the street and require them to make a reservation. the transportation authority says the average capacity on the street is 320 an hour. past attempts have failed. >> the concern that ipo millionaires are about to gobble up every last piece of real estate in san francisco may not be a problem for most people. first of all, the city has 300,000 millionaires. the real estate agents don't think another 2,000 millionaires will make much of a difference.

happening today, san francisco will celebrate the life and legacy of one of america's most influential civil rights leaders. cesar chavez co-founded the united farmworkers union. he fought for the rights of some of america's poorest laborers. a parade and festival are planned in his honor. it will start at dolores park and the festival runs from 11:00 to 6:00 tree and bryant streets. also happening in san francisco, it's the biggest cherry blossom festival on the west coast. the festival attracts 200,000 each year and this is the event's 52nd year. there will be origami demonstrations and drummers and live music. dozens of vendors will fill the streets with food, jewelry and clothing. the festival runs from 11:00 to 6:00 in japan town and next sunday is the grand parade, and

relatively mild tree season. that is all going to change in a week or two. this grass is going to pollinate like crazy and we've had a lot of growth this year. it's a very powerful allergen and not only does it cause us a lot of misery with our eyes and our nose, it causes a lot of wheezing and so we tend to have a lot of visits to the emergency room. >> he says by mother's day we'll hit our grass pollen peak. he advises getting out the meds now. over the counter nasal sprays and eye drops can mitigate the symptoms a bit and close windows and cars in your home if you're allergic to grass. >> i still will go outside and i don't want to stay in the house and i'll just decide to deal with it the best i can. >> so what i'm going to do is keep up religiously with these inhalers from now on just to be on the safe side. >> it's the rain that dictates pollen and so for tree allergies it's the year before. so last year made less rain,
