on the scene. can you give us an idea of the scope of the damage? >> reporter: good morning, jessica and dion. as you can see crews remain on scene and cleanup is continuing. it's been nearly five hours since that first call came in. it will be a tough day for the local businesses in this building behind me including a real estate office and a thai restaurant. a fire destroyed several units last night. >> there's approximately eight to ten businesses in this building, currently all uninhabitable. a few with significant fire damage, complete loss, and some with smoke and water damage. >> reporter: the deputy fire chief believes the fire started somewhere in the middle section but they won't know for sure until the investigation is complete. in novato, i'm chris reyes for abc 7 news. house speaker nancy pelosi

asking capital police to step up security for minnesota congresswoman omar as she faces more death threats. this comes after president trump tweeted a video featuring omar. the video is edited to show her being dismissive of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. te congresswoman accuses mr. trump of encouraging right-wing extremist violence. white house press secretary sarah sanders denies the accusation. the latest democrat to run for president is from the bay area. congressman eric swalwell made it official in his hometown of dublin. and at his alma mater dublin high school. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has the story. we apologize for that audio issue. we'll get back to that story as soon as possible. just in time for tax day, another 2020 democratic presidential hopeful has

released 15 years of tax returns. senator kamala harris reports she and her husband made $1.9 million last year and had a federal tax bill of about $700,000. she made around $157,000 as a senator, $320,000 as a writer. her husband brought in $1.5 million as a lawyer. president trump's re-election campaign has raised $30,000 since the start of the year, more than his top two democratic rivals combined. vermont senator bernie sanders has raised $18.2 million. senator kamala harris $12 million. american airlines is joining southwest in grounding boeing 737 max planes through at least mid-august. 115 flights per day will be canceled through august 19th. the u.s. grounded max planes last month after two deadly plane crashes. american airlines previously planned to cancel max flights through early june. that extension means officials

some drive times for you 5:06 on this monday morning. looks like you're sluggish into dublin on 580. highway 4 is looking good as is your drive into san francisco via san rafael. under 20 minutes. >> appreciate the update, sue, thanks. the third time was not a charm for car thieves in the east bay. police recovered another stolen van belonging to the dianne adair daycare. thieves have taken advance three times in the past year. the latest theft happened on friday. a concord police dispatcher spotted the stolen vehicle yesterday while driving to work. she alerted fellow officers who located the van and arrested the suspect. there is a shortage of psychiatrists at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. the examiner reports student loan debt and the high cost of living have pushed experienced psychiatrists out and into private hospitals.

its eighth and final season premiered last night. abc 7 news spoke with david peterson, a uc berkeley graduate who created several of the languages in the show. in 2009 he invented for a "game of thrones" language competition. the hbo series with a worldwide cult following is based off of george r.r. martin's best-selling book series. >> i wanted to make it look as if my language existed before he ever wrote the books, as if he had taken my language and use it had to translate into the books afterwards. he was the number one inspiration. >> and listen to this, thanks to his game of throne fame peterson has been approached to create new languages for other tv shows. what a launch pad for him. >> can you imagine telling someone what you do for a live, i create some languages. no big deal. what a skill to have.

does he have a stake? does he have a shot? for sure. is he the guaranteed winner? no. nobody is. >> reporter: swalwell says he wants to make education accessible for all. he proposes no interest federal student loans but knows his stance on gun control will be the toughest battle of all. in dublin, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. the city of novato is holding off before making a decision on planning plastic straws. novato city councilmembers are wait to go vote on the issue until they see how it goes for another marin county town first. they are testing a pilot program restricting single use plastics like straw. novato says it wants to learn before moving forward themselves. tiburon and fairfax are also considering similar rules. all right. depending on where you live in the bay area and the size of your family making half a million a year may not be all that much money.

filled with toilet paper looted. all of this is the aftermath on 42nd avenue and international boulevard in oakland. it all started during a sideshow at about 9:00 p.m. now the crowd looted the truck and littered the street with toilet paper. then they set fire to the semi. people started to scatter when officers arrived. no one was hurt and no one arrested. developing in the east bay there are three victims involved in an oakland hit-and-run on saturday. they've now been identified. it's a mother and her 7-year-old son who were killed. a 19-year-old family member remains in critical condition this morning. >> abc 7 news reporter jobina fortson is live for us in the newsroom with the latest on this really tough story. jobina? >> reporter: it's heartbreaking. the victims have been identified as 7-year-old angel garcia vasquez and his mother alma vasquez. the father says his wife, son and brother were crossing 26th street and foothill boulevard when they were hit. oakland police say they have a

possible secretauspect but have made an arrest, a black male around 6'2" wearing a white t-shirt and gray hoodie at the time. a nearby surveillance camera caught him leaving, the black mercedes involved with a broken windshield and blood. angel was a beloved kindergartner in oakland. his principal released a heartfelt message last night and says the intersection where this happened is notoriously dangerous. community members spent yesterday collecting money for a go fund me to support the family. the father garcia says his wife leaves behind two other children. >> mama go away. my older son, i told him like that. >> reporter: the principal of ics says the school community will be marching to the corner of 26 and foothill at 3:00 p.m. on thursday to demand a traffic light. an oakland city councilman is expected to visit the area

today. reporting live in the newsroom, jobina fortson, abc 7 news. all right, jobina, thank you. east bay congressman eric swalwell is taking his campaign for the presidency to the battleground state of nevada today. swalwell will hold a town hall at unlv one day after officially launching his presidential bid in his hometown of dublin. he returned to kick off his run. he graduated from the school 20 years ago. the former alameda county prosecutor told the crowd of about 1,500 people gun control will be his campaign's top priority. congressman swalwell is proposing to ban and buy back every single assault weapon in america. meantime another democrat is officially in the race for the white house. mayor pete buttigieg told the crowd in his hometown of south bend, indiana, it's time for new generations to take over. >> the forces changing our country today are tectonic. forces that help to explain what made this current presidency

snow, 2 to 5 inches in chicago. back home we have rain to talk about, not for the first half of the day. it's several hours away. you can see along the coast from point reyes, live doppler 7 picking up on a few showers. 52 in mountain view. good morning to you in napa. it's 46. 49 downtown. 48 half moon bay. and we have some partly cloudy skies right now, so heading out driving mass transit or ferry it's all pretty good except the winds kicking up later on today and the rain moving in by 3:00 on the peninsula. so notice partly to mostly cloudy skies but numbers are cool. when the rain starts it will stay with us through the 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 hour from belmont, redwood city and into the east bay, also into the south bay. here is the time line for the rest of you. 1:00 from sonoma to petaluma and then by 3:00 it's over into concord and livermore down through cupertino and the coast looking at heavier rain from half moon bay to pacifica and gusty winds.

minutes. lisa, thank you. happening today the 123rd running of the world's oldest and most prestigious race, the boston marathon. it is going to be a wet one today for the runners. this is video from last year's race. you can see also a wet one. the good news it's not as cold as expected. temperatures were in the 60s as runners arrived instead of the expected 30s in the initial forecast. today marks the sixth anniversary of the deadly boston marathon bombing. in case you missed it, tiger woods and the sports world are celebrating one of the most amazing comebacks in golf. >> the return to glory. >> and the crowd goes wild. you can hear them. the fans that exploded in cheers as woods finished the final round to win the masters for the fifth time yesterday. he went two years without playing in a major tournament. he's had four surgeries all to repair his ailing back. woods reflected on what this

this looks like a february forecast, doesn't it? and you can see the rain line sweeping through for the first half of the day. stopping it here 1:00, it's raining from marin just pushing into the east bay and then by 4:00, 5:00 that afternoon and evening commute is wet for everyone, san francisco, san mateo, into cupertino and over into oakland. by 8:00 it's still raining in some parts of the bay. we'll see the end of the rain, breezy conditions on the coast and that transition day tomorrow. as the rain begins to add up, yes, we are looking at amounts at that are quite impressive for mid-april. half inch on the coast. three-quarters down around the santa cruz mountains. the accuweather seven-day forecast, 1 today. tomorrow we'll look for an early chance of rain, temperatures climbing quickly into the upper 70s on wednesday. thursday and friday, 80s around the bay and inlan. 70s at the coast. a cooling trend but still dry for easter week.

concerns from riders. there have been reports of the brakes being a little stronger than expected on the front wheel. some of the bikes in the san jose area will stay in service because the components are a little bit different there. the company says it's working on developing a new bike that it will roll out soon. gobike operates as city bike in other major cities as well. no word if anyone has actually been hurt because of this braking issue. you'll soon be able to hop on a bike and cruise through the water between oakland and alame alameda. both cities have given the green lights on this, a fleet of 25 electrically assisted water bikes. users claim a bike through a mobile app and then ride on the 200-yardest we're between the jack london square area or the grand street dock in alameda. pricing has not yet been determined but the bikes should roll out just in time for summer in july. >> i so want to try it although
