morning. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: michael, good morning. this is what this powerful storm did to this apartment building here in cherokee county, tearing down the wall. three people managed to escape by crawling out the front door and this morning they are thankful to be alive. deadly tornadoes tearing across five states over the weekend. >> hurry, hurry, hurry. it's coming this way. >> reporter: in texas, an ef-3 tornado touching down in franklin. the town taking a direct hit. >> i have seen tornadoes, but nothing like this. >> reporter: you can see from the air a path of destruction. nothing left but foundations left where homes once stood. this woman telling me she lost everything. >> all i have is the clothes on my back right now. >> reporter: cars tossed, homes ripped apart. thousands still without power. >> my house was just lifted, just scattered all over the backyard. >> reporter: eight people killed including three children.

among the dead jason dylan creole, a tree fell on top of the car they were riding in. in mississippi, a state of emergency. homes decimated. 17 counties sustaining severe damage. >> somebody trapped underneath the house. >> reporter: heavy rains leading to flash flooding, catching drivers off guard. you can hear the panic and fear. two in this suv got caught up in floodwaters, rescued from a ditch. the tornado ripping power lines from the ground in ohio. in louisiana this elementary school engulfed in flames caused by a possible lightning strike. miraculously, no one was hurt. more than 100 structures in this county alone sustained some bit of damage, including the school. robin, incredible to know, that two tornadoes touched down in the same community about an hour apart. >> incredible indeed. thank you. we'll bring in ginger. that severe weather is hitting the east coast this morning. we had rain here in the city and boston as well where they're kicking off the marathon. >> the rough start, especially

early as people are going to the boston marathon, remember, half a million people descend on boston to watch, 30,000 runners, a wet start. you can see how windy it was when that line of strong storms blew through. now that line is moving off into the ocean. that low pressure system will bring windy conditions behind it but much greater than windy will be the next big severe storm threat. remember, we show you these because they end up happening like they did over the weekend with nearly 500 severe storm reports. dallas and wichita false in there. guys? >> ginger, thank you very much. to the white house now, and the president's push to bus migrants to sanctuary cities governed by democrats. people inside the administration rejected the idea as costly and impractical and illegal. i asked press secretary sarah sanders why the president continues to push the proposal. >> look, we have -- that was brought up at a staff level. it was determined at that time that logistically there were a

lot of challenges and it probably didn't make sense to move forward and the idea didn't go further. >> not just logistically, legally. >> the president likes it. we're looking to see if there are options that make it possible, and doing it in a full and thorough and extensive review. >> let's bring in senior white house correspondent cecelia vega. cecilia, at another point, she said it's not the president's plan. how seriously are they taking this? >> reporter: george, if it's any indication of where the president's head is this morning, his very first tweet out this morning is to send marketing advice to boeing. sarah sanders told you yesterday that sending undocumented immigrants to sanctuary cities wouldn't be their first choice. we know that behind the scenes immigration officials have been contradicting the administration on this one saying adamantly there is not a plan in place to enforce this idea. it's not one they're taking seriously up. you mentioned, george, that democrats say this is dead on arrival, and they're suggesting they might want stephen miller, the architect of many of these controversial immigration

policies coming out of this white house to come before congress to testify. >> and cecilia, the attorney general, william barr, expected to deliver that redacted version of the mueller report this week. how worried is the white house and what are they doing to prepare? >> reporter: the official line has been, still is, case closed, full exoneration for the president. but privately we know they are bracing for the release of this report. we know that they have been briefed on it. the president said just a couple of days ago he had not read the full report, but sources are telling our team that there are very serious concerns about the unredacted parts of this report that could be coming out in just a matter of days. new information on topics like the firing of james comey and the question of obstruction of justice. >> the question is what congress does with this. cecilia, thanks very much. robin? to capitol hill where house speaker nancy pelosi is saying she'll take steps to ensure freshman representative ilhan omar's safety after president trump targeted her on twitter after a remark about 9/11. senior congressional correspondent mary bruce has more on all that.

good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, robin. overnight, the freshman congresswoman says she has seen an increase in direct threats on her life after president trump tweeted a video mixing footage of the congresswoman who is muslim giving a recent speech with footage of the 9/11 attack. in a statement, omar says, quote, violent rhetoric and all forms of hate speech have no place in our society, much less from our country's commander-in-chi commander-in-chief. this morning house speaker nancy pelosi is stepping up security for the congresswoman and urging the president to take down this video which she calls dangerous and disrespectful. democrats say that omar's recent comment that, quote, some people did something on 9/11 is being taken out of context. they say she was discussing discrimination against muslim americans. but, george, the president and the white house are saying they wish no ill will and certainly not violence against the congresswoman. george? >> a lot of questions about that. mary bruce, that very much. in the race for the white house, pete buttigieg, the mayor

friends reportedly on a mission to share photos from the top of the tower. >> it's going to be top of the bell tower, female fell from a high location. neck and head injuries at the top of the bell tower at fordham university. >> reporter: police say senior sydney monfries died sunday after suffering life-threatening injuries after falling nearly 40 feet reportedly in a hole in the stairs to the top. in an email to students, the university president confirming the death of the 22-year-old avid traveler who showcased her global excursions across her instagram page. >> i really feel for the family. that's just very sad, you know, just a tragic incident. >> i'm sure she was friendly and kind. just the fact that so many people know her is a testament to that. >> reporter: officials say the building and tower are locked at night and they're investigating how those students managed to get inside.

as for monfrese who was set to graduate next month, leaders say she will still receive her degree post humously. >> thank you so much. now to that close call overnight. a small plane going down outside a home in long island just narrowly missing the ground, getting caught in the power lines. miraculously, no one was seriously injured and abc's gio benitez is there with the story. good morning, gio. >> reporter: michael, good morning. an incredible story. i'll step out of the way here because it's not every day that you see a plane in somebody's front lawn, and again, that amazing headline, everyone survived this crash. >> they're literally okay. they walked out of a plane that completely crashed. >> reporter: the images are stunning. a single engine cessna airplane strung up in wires, caught up in wires just a few feet from the ground. >> we lost contact with the aircraft two to three miles northeast of the kennedy airport. >> reporter: the plane carrying

two korean tourists had reportedly run out of gas after a flight to niagara falls and several aborted landings at republic airport. it was redirected to jfk airport. >> as they came around, they ran out of fuel. the wires prevented the plane from actually striking the ground and it hung it up about one foot from hitting the ground. >> reporter: a miraculous ending of the flight. the only injury, a sprained finger on one of the passengers. and in this case, perhaps it's a good thing that they ran out of gas because that may be what prevented a fire from starting and allowed all these people to walk away safely. robin? >> could be, gio. glad everybody'skay. thank you. can we talk about tiger woods? >> yeah. >> waking up a masters champion again this morning. his comeback epic, winning his first major tournament since 2008. t.j., this was just incredible. >> just special. augusta national is where the tiger legend began. he was a 21-year-old skinny kid when he became the first person of color and the youngest to win the masters. history came in rapid succession

i'm jessica castro from abc 7 mornings. we've been tracking breaking news out of novado where a fire broke out on belmer and keith boulevard. fire investigators are on the scene. the building houses around 10 businesses, all those businesses suffered either smoke, fire or water damage. firefighters say two people inside at the time the fire broke out were able to get out safely. we're looking at a backup at the richmond center rafael bridge which is pretty typical these days. a car was trying to pass in the center divide, ended up getting

storm passes. and today, well, folks, it's the day. tax day. you have until midnight tonight to get them in the mail or to file electronically, and don't worry. you're not alone if you haven't done so. some 50 million americans haven't completed their taxes yet. and anticipation is growing for the new "star wars," "the rise of skywalker." the teaser trailer for the final film in the saga getting more than 21 million views. we have new details from the producer and director coming right up. that is coming up, but now we have an exclusive interview with the parents of samantha josephson. she was the young woman killed after getting into a stranger's car thinking it was her uber. making ridesharing services safe is now the mission of their life and we'll speak with seymour and marci josephson after this reporting from linsey davis. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, george. this story gives pause to anyone who uses rideshare services. samantha josephson was 21 years old, a senior at the university of south carolina who planned to attend law school. last month she was murdered after getting into the back of a car that she thought was her

uber ride. these are the last images of 21-year-old samantha josephson alive. the university of south carolina student seen getting into this black chevy impala, the car she believed was her uber around 2:00 a.m. after a night with friends last month. police say the driver is 25-year-old nathaniel david rowland who is not an uber driver at all, but was allegedly passing by when josephson made the fatal mistake of opening the back door and getting inside. >> the child safety locks were activated on the door that would not allow someone the means to escape. >> reporter: the next afternoon turkey hunters discovered josephson's body in this wooded area about 90 minutes from her columbus campus. investigators used that surveillance footage to track down rowland's car. they found blood and a cell phone inside. rowland remains in jail charged with josephson's kidnapping and murder.

>> she was by herself. what we have learned is that you cannot, men or women -- you guys have to travel together. >> reporter: friends and family gathering to remember the political science major who was just a few weeks away from graduation. >> we all consider ourselves very fortunate to have known and loved sammy and to have had her in our lives. our lives will forever be better from having known her. we love you, sammy. >> reporter: this week, the south carolina house passed the samantha l. josephson ridesharing safety act bill to make it easier for riders to identify the car intended for their use. george? >> part of the change that must come. linsey, thank you very much. we are joined by samantha's parents, seymour and marci josephson. this hit home for so many of us and we are so sorry for your loss. >> thank you. >> we know it's hard for you to come in here today, but you promised that samantha will not be forgotten. what do you want everybody to know about her? >> we just want you to know that

she was a fabulous young woman, kind, a best friend to everyone, really determined, hard worker and a fun young woman. >> you called her sweet pea? >> yeah. i call both of my children sweet pea. they are just -- both of my kids are phenomenal. they are our best friend, and as the vigil said, all the kids that got up, they all said that she's my best friend. she's my best friend. and to us, our kids are our best friends. >> now you're going to try to save the lives of so many other kids and so many other people all across the country, all around the world. what are the big changes you want to see happen right now? >> so south carolina has processed passing the law for the illumination of the signs and i think that's great. it's a great start. >> put the signs up in the windows. >> yes, and i think that's great, but with this, what happened was that samantha

mistakenly thought this was her uber, and -- >> it wasn't even an uber driver. >> it wasn't an uber driver. he was impersonating an uber driver, and one of the things we want to do is -- there are 19 states that do not have front license plates on their car, and south carolina happened to be one of them, so you can't see when the car's pulling up. you can't see the front license plate, so i think -- i'm not saying to change all the states and make it mandatory, but if you are going to be in the ridesharing industry, you should have a front license plate. >> there are so many things that all of us have to do, all of us as parents. the important question you have to ask before you get into the car is, what's my name? >> it has to be automatic like putting on a seat belt. you have to ask, what's my name because it can be anyone, and if the only thing we can do is to help change the way everyone thinks so no one else has to go through this. >> another big thing that can change the ridesharing industry

is by putting a code on the driver's side and the passenger side. >> like a bar code. >> put your phone up to it and if it turns green, it's my ride. if it's not, it turns red. the technology is out there. it's a very easy way to implement this -- the safety of the consumer as well as the driver. >> i can imagine you have probably been hearing from so many people across the country since this happened, reaching out with sympathy and help. >> yeah. we have heard from strangers all over the country, and so many people have told us it could have been our daughter or son, ourselves. >> all of us think that. >> and i think it has become such a natural -- a new phenomenon using uber, but we trust people and you can't. we have to change the way the laws are to make it safer. that's our nature. we automatically assume we're safe, and we put our loved ones in an uber or lyft. >> we teach our kids growing up not to get in cars with strangers and what do we do? we get in cars with strangers. >> that's why we have got to change the way we think about

all this. >> yes. >> and laws have to change. >> we have spoken to our local congressman and they want to do something together with us. >> federally. >> do something federally, and we want to put this together and make sure it passes and it's a bipartisan issue. >> that's fitting in so many ways. i know samantha wanted to go to law school. >> yeah. >> the university of south carolina will be giving you her degree posthumously in may. i know you want to be there for her. >> it will be the hardest thing for us to go, but we need to go. >> she wanted us there. >> she wanted us there, and i had reviewed some of our old text messages and she had said something about us not being able to attend and she said it was all right if we didn't attend and we said, we wouldn't miss it for the world. >> of course, you won't, and you're going to help a lot of people with what you are doing right now. we're sorry again for your loss, and thank you for coming in. >> thank you. >> we'll be right back. and thank you for coming in.

abrams who returns after helming 2015's "star wars: the force awakens." we have seen a couple snippets. we saw the poster. we know the title. why have you kept this one shrouded in secrecy? >> it felt like there was a series of "star wars" movies that came out behind pretty close to this one and we didn't want to feel like we were getting lost in that. we felt like it was kind of better to wait until the right moment. >> you almost didn't take the gig. why? >> well, the truth is when kathleen kennedy called to ask if i was interested in coming on to direct episode nine, i was surprised at how emotional i was about it. i didn't know i was going to want to help bring to a close this thing that we started with episode seven that was obviously a continuation of what george created. it was a visceral reaction of -- it was too good of an opportunity to refuse. >> reporter: also returning to episode nine is princess leia, a role made famous by actress carrie fisher who died suddenly in december of 2016.

texas, ohio, some of them ef-2, ef-3. oklahoma, texas, arkansas, another shot after wednesday. >> thanks, ginger. turning to the white house and the president's push to bus migrants to sanctuary cities. we want to go back to cecilia vega with the latest. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: george, good morning, again. you know, the president tweeted congress should come back to d.c. and fix the nation's immigration laws. there is no indication that will happen any time soon. democrats have said this idea of sending undocumented immigrants to sanctuary cities is dead on arrival. they're now suggesting they might want stephen miller, the architect of some of these most controversial policies, to come and testify before congress. really the big question right now this morning is whether this is an idea that's actually seriously being considered. immigration officials flatly say, this is not something being considered, but sarah sanders just told you on "this week," it's on the table. take a listen. >> we have talked about a number

after an 18-month wait, "game of thrones" returning to tv for its final season. anticipation sky high throughout the night. all top ten of the worldwide twitter trends related to the premiere. by the thousands, fans gathering for watch parties like this one in chicago. costumes and set displays, setting the tone fit for the seven kingdoms. >> we debated staying home, but it was cool to have, like, a community of people. >> it's so epic. it's so cinematic for a television show, i don't think we have had that before. >> reporter: and those who weren't deemed to take it seriously enough, even locked out. chrissy teigen chronicling her own husband john legend shutting her out of his party for talking too much. >> what are you guys doing? >> reporter: there was no expense spared for the show's last hoorah. costs for season eight reportedly more than $15 million per episode. by all accounts, it was worth it.

starting out dry for your morning commute, by the afternoon, it's going to be wet for the evening commute. a quarter inch to a third of an inch of rain for most of us, a half inch by the evening hours, perhaps along the coast, where it's going to be gusty, today the coolest day of the week, with only low to mid-50s at the shore line. 60 in freemont. check out the 7-day outlook, getting warmer as soon a a a a a and now to our "gma" cover a story. the number of measles cases climbing to over 460 patients nationwide. five more patients confirmed in michigan, bringing the state total to 39, and at least three of those patients were vaccinated. dr. jennifer ashton is here with what you need to know. what do we need to know? >> this measles is really dominating the medical and health headlines and for good reason.

this is the single most infectious virus in the world. about 90% of people who are exposed to it, if they have not been vaccinated, will become infected and sick. let's talk about the vaccine. it is incredibly safe and effective. it's about 97% effective after you get the two doses and 93% after a single dose. you are considered protected lifelong, but it is not perfect. you saw that number was 97%, and not 100%. there is a small percentage of people we call nonresponders and that's what appears to be going on in these very, very rare cases of people becoming sick after they know they have been vaccinated. >> now you have heard these stories. there are some stories circulating that the vaccine wears off, that you may need a booster. is any of that -- >> no. that's really the most important thing about this. we are seeing with this national outbreak, so much myth, misinformation. >> yeah. >> miseducation. it is making people sick. so again, the cdc is all over this. they are saying to people, again, this vaccine does not wear off.

you don't need a booster, but there is also talk of, should i get tested? should i get this blood test to see if i'm protected? the answer is no. number one, that test was designed to see if you have been naturally exposed. that's different than vaccine protection, and it's expensive, and, you know, for the rare people who might get that test result back and it shows no immunity, they're going to be left with saying, what do i do? this really pertains to medical professionals and health care providers who need to make sure they're protected. the key year, 1957, if you were born before that, you are presumed to have been naturally exposed. if you were born after that, the vast majority of people are protected with the vaccine. >> okay. we haven't had to deal with this in a very, very long time. remind people of the severity, especially for children. >> that's right. let's take a history and medical walk down memory lane and realize that this is not just a possibility. we can see this. so take a look at these numbers, robin.

albums with prints and we would put in those little plastic pockets? yeah. we don't do that anymore. all of our pictures live on devices and in the clouds. so families want these instead, printed books that memorialize a year or an event. with so many services online offering them, how do you choose? sheila has a goal to make a photo book of her family memories every year, but there are a lot of competing services. >> they all kind of look the same on your screen, but until you receive it, you have no idea the quality. >> reporter: they have agreed to try out five popular photo book services. snapfish, shutterfly and mixbook. also two surprise entrants, costco and amazon. using the same 60 photos, sheila

uploads the files and follows the directions to create the book layouts. a few weeks later, all the books have arrived and we sit down to look. >> i tried to put the key highlights of every month. >> back to school, apple picking. >> yeah. >> reporter: shutterfly, it looked really sophisticated. >> this one is extra glossy. >> and it has this fancy back. >> reporter: it has competition though. >> in terms of quality, the costco one ended up having the best quality of the photos. all of the prints came out vibrant and clear. >> reporter: but -- >> costco didn't have very many layouts and it was difficult to figure out. >> reporter: were the others easier? >> ease of use was snapfish. i made my book and i think from start to finish it took like 20 minutes. >> reporter: beyond one person's opinion, we took it to sam hoffman, owner of a fine art print lab. while they don't make print books, he'll evaluate the quality. he didn't know the makes of each book. they were randomly numbered. >> you see a real difference between these? >> i do. >> reporter: he cites quality differences with contrast, warm

skin tone, shadow detail and saturation. both the shutterfly and costco books impressed him. >> that really gives me a feeling, like, i'm in that shot. >> reporter: and with the costco books, while sam loved the image quality -- >> the baby is completely cut off. >> mom said when she laid this out, it didn't look like this in the online layout. >> reporter: the other factor, the feel of the book. >> it feels like this is sewn and glued together. it feels like a more finished book. there's not that feeling of the warmth of the flesh tones. >> reporter: but he ranked them and -- >> so your top pick? >> shutterfly. >> reporter: but there is one last factor to consider, price. we included tax and shipping here and we used the discounts available on the day we ordered. the most expensive book was from mixbook at $47 and change. shutterfly came in over $40. costco and snapfish a penny apart at $32.68 and $32.67, and

amazon with the least expensive book at $27. and mixbook, snapfish and amazon tell us they provide high quality professional books at a great value. many of these services offer outrageous deals on photo books. sometimes 50% or 60% off. keep an eye on those sites and jump when the deals are on offer. >> you have to get them when you can. we heard the experts say some photos are warmer than others. you will show us what they meant by that. >> reporter: color temperature is really personal. i have asked our director jeff to alter the color on my shot here. so let's go cooler. my shirt should be looking bluer and my skin is grayer, and i'm smurfy here. that's the cool side. let's go to the warm side. let's warm it up. what should happen is you will see the skin tones get more orange. hair gets yellower. it's really something that these companies set as a standard for warm or cool and we found the

>> yeah. >> that's great. oh. i noticed that. >> this is for the global penguin society. >> beautiful. this is something a little bit different. what was the process like in preparing for this? >> yeah. this is a really cool movie. it's a disney nature documentary about penguins, and i narrate the movie, like, a traditional documentary narrator, but i also -- i also voice the main penguin's voice. because there is a -- it's the story of steve. he's sort of the star penguin and even though it's a documentary, they have kind of made a narrative out of it, and i get to do both. i get to kind of, like, dip in as this character, but also be a traditional narrator. so it's a very unusual movie that way, and i think it's very special and fun. >> are you -- [ applause ] all right. right here. >> it's more than just a

beautiful courtship ritual. steve and adilene will use these moments of intimacy to memorize each other's voices. after this, they will be able to find each other amongst the crowds, forever.
