structure has been saved. the two main towers are also intact. >> also safe tonight, some of the cathedral's most precious artwork. however, a spokesperson for the cathedral has described the damage as colossal. a couple of hours ago we spoke with the french consul general in san francisco. >> notre dame is the heart of france. everywhere in france, when you want to know how far paris is, the number of kilometers refers to the center of paris that is to notre dame. i cannot imagine paris without the towers of notre dame and without notre dame. >> the cause of the fire is not known at this time. french people living in and visiting the bay area are stunned today. >> abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow is outside as a flight from paris landed a short time ago. melanie? >> ama and eric, most of the people we spoke to say they fist lea first learned of the fire when the plane landed, mostly through text messages from loved ones. as they were arriving here,

"world news tonight" with david muir will have much more on the notre dame fire. that's at 5:30 right after this newscast. also making news today, law enforcement says they will crack down on sideshows after one in oakland over the weekend led to a carjacking, looting, and a burning ac transit bus. it happened at 42nd and international, the same intersection that had a sideshow last weekend. leslie brinkley is at police headquarters in oakland. leslie? >> well, you know, we often talk about chaos in the news. chaos is the word we use. last night there was chaos on the streets of oakland. you had 100 cars, a thousand people, some of them firing guns and starting fires. this is video from a deputy running into a sideshow at 42nd avenue and international

boulevard in east oakland. >> we've been dealing with sideshow for decades. but the criminality and boldness that has gone on the last couple years has gotten way worse. >> this show morphed into violence between 8:00 and 9:00 sunday night. >> during that time we have shots being fired in unknown directions. we had bottles and rocks being thrown at officers and deputies. >> a semitruck loaded with paper supplies was looted and attacked. >> the driver was removed from his cab of his truck at gunpoint. so that's a carjacking. >> police say his truck was torched. they say they were overwhelmed by the crowd. behind him, an ac transit bus was stuck, and the driver was forced to flee. it too caught on fire. a half million bus destroyed. surveillance video and posts on social media are being analyzed by law enforcement in an attempt to make some arrests. they say there was a camera on the bus as well. out-of-towners police say flood

to san mateo, skyline boulevard, san carlos into the south bay across san jose and will le glen. it's a level 1 on our impact scale. light to moderate rain a half an inch. occasionally breezy at times. i'll be back with the hour-by-hour timeline. >> thank you so much. today the california highway patrol confirmed the source of last friday night's concrete incident on the richmond bridge. apparently it came from a pothole. this is the third time something like this has happened. besides last friday, chunks of april fell april 5th and february 8th. understandably, drivers are nervous. abc7 news reporter wayne freedman joins us from the toll plaza with more of the so-called fallout. is there any less concern now, wayne? >> well, sure there is concern, and that's the problem. the fact that there is concern at all. and there is new talk about replacing the bridge. the question is how and when. on and around the richmond bridge, this is not a good look, and one that commuters have seen

too often in connection with this structure. three times this year the roadbed has shed concrete, including an incident from a pothole friday night. >> advise the contractor is out there. the workers is out there of this possible concrete issue and have them reinspect everything. >> it does alarm me. to be honest with you, it's quite frustrating that this continues to happen. >> this afternoon tony tavares who directs caltrans for the bay area weighed in with his concerns. >> it is an old bridge. it's almost 65 years old. it needs some love and care, if you will. >> hence an $8 million project to replace every cracking seam on the upper deck followed by a similar project on the lower deck, which leads to a question. why not build a new bridge? assemblyman mark levin has asked it. >> we know the bridge is failing. well need to have a new bridge in place. well need to have a plan now so we can build a new bridge. >> a new bridge would cost an estimated $3 million, with caltrans spending $80 million in

trying to make their way down lombard street. now the newest proposal, make drivers pay to use the road. from droneview7, it's easy to see why the crooked street attracts huge crowds of tourists. but from the ground, residents have a different perspective. >> i moved here 22 years ago, and it was nothing like this then. >> gray brundage says something has to be done to deal with the massive growth of tourists, especially over the past ten years. >> selfies, oh, my gosh, that in itself is an issue. >> i want to be able to make sure that this neighborhood is livable for the people who do live here. >> an assemblyman's solution setting up a reservation solution and charging visitors $5 to drive the crooked road. this show it works. you would register online, pick a day and time to visit. when your number is called, a license plate reader would verify it's your time and then enjoy the ride. the city has tried to fix the problem in the past with new signs and traffic control, but they say nothing's worked. >> they have been unable to properly manage the crowds with

52-week low. it's been about two weeks since it went public, and in that period it has ended more trading days in the negative than positive. in may it will test a new products that mimics the old taxi line at airports. the goal is to eliminate people having to search for their lyft. users will now get a code when they order a ride. they then wait in a line of lyfts and give the code to the driver. we may experience fewer cases of west nile virus this summer because of our wet winter. the state department of public health says drought conditions increase the number of west nile infections. researchers aren't sure why that is. it's possible that dry conditions force mosquitos and birds into closer proximity around the limited sources of water. another theory is that droughts may put a strain on birds' immune systems, leaving them more vulnerable to infection. scientists in israel have created what they say is the world's first 3-d printed heart. it uses a patient's own cells, all but eliminating the risk of rejection. the heart is a prototype, about
