terrible fire? it took hold so quickly. >> this is a hugely important place for catholics, for the history of france. >> we all want to extend our regards and our hopes to paris. >> and people in paris welcomed the sentiment, singing hymns after watching a cityicon burn into the night. ♪ >> and now we take a live look outside notre dame in paris. it is 2:00 a.m. there, about 7 1/2 hours since that fire began, and you can still see water being poured on to it. good evening. thank you for joining us tonight. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm eric thomas. we thank you so much for joining us. just within the past hour, journalists have been tweeting images from inside the cathedral. it's the first look we're getting inside notre dame. >> only a small part of the vault collapsed. otherwise the interior seems relatively untouched. >> as for the rest of the cathedral, a french firefighter told reporters the main

structure has been saved. the two main towers are also intact. >> also safe tonight, some of the cathedral's most precious artwork. however, a spokesperson for the cathedral has described the damage as colossal. a couple of hours ago we spoke with the french consul general in san francisco. >> notre dame is the heart of france. everywhere in france, when you want to know how far paris is, the number of kilometers refers to the center of paris that is to notre dame. i cannot imagine paris without the towers of notre dame and without notre dame. >> the cause of the fire is not known at this time. french people living in and visiting the bay area are stunned today. >> abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow is outside as a flight from paris landed a short time ago. melanie? >> ama and eric, most of the people we spoke to say they fist lea first learned of the fire when the plane landed, mostly through text messages from loved ones. as they were arriving here,

people in belgian place, otherwise known as the french quarter of san francisco, were watching closely. the owner of cafe bastille was glued to the news before the lunch crowd rolled in, breaking only to message relatives in france and speak to us. >> this story is going down in flames. >> firefighters battling a massive blaze at notre dame cathedral as the world watched. >> it is the center of paris. sad for the whole country. >> french people arriving at san francisco international airport say they heard the news when their plane landed. >> someone in front of us said notre dame is in fire. >> pierre michel took his daughter to notre dame three months ago. >> she said she was shocked when she saw the fire. >> a sentiment shared by others as we showed them video of the spire falling. >> i didn't see yet. >> it's not that much the

religious part. more the culture and the history symbol it represents. >> once you leave there, it's part of the city. you don't even notice. but now you know that it's like gone. >> meantime, american tourists returning on a flight from paris were stunned. the historical landmark they had just visited was now on fire. >> it's incredible. pictures don't do it justice. we were there 8:00 last night. the last thing we saw. >> it was amazing. it was beautiful. very awe inspiring. such a tragedy. and i hope they're able to restore it. >> shock and disbelief for both people who live in france and those who have visited. live at sfo, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> thank you very much. long-time san franciscans may remember a similar fire at st. paul's lutheran church located at eddy and goff streets. the roof caved in much like notre dame's today and it was never rebuilt. and in 1962 san francisco's st.

mary's turned into a blackened ruin. the building had survived the earthquake and fire of 1906. "world news tonight" with david muir will have much more on the notre dame fire. that's at 5:30 right after this newscast. also making news today, law enforcement says they will crack down on sideshows after one in oakland over the weekend led to a carjacking, looting, and a burning ac transit bus. it happened at 42nd and international, the same intersection that had a sideshow last weekend. leslie brinkley is at police headquarters in oakland. leslie? >> well, you know, we often talk about chaos in the news. chaos is the word we use. last night there was chaos on the streets of oakland. you had 100 cars, a thousand people, some of them firing guns and starting fires. this is video from a deputy running into a sideshow at 42nd avenue and international

boulevard in east oakland. >> we've been dealing with sideshow for decades. but the criminality and boldness that has gone on the last couple years has gotten way worse. >> this show morphed into violence between 8:00 and 9:00 sunday night. >> during that time we have shots being fired in unknown directions. we had bottles and rocks being thrown at officers and deputies. >> a semitruck loaded with paper supplies was looted and attacked. >> the driver was removed from his cab of his truck at gunpoint. so that's a carjacking. >> police say his truck was torched. they say they were overwhelmed by the crowd. behind him, an ac transit bus was stuck, and the driver was forced to flee. it too caught on fire. a half million bus destroyed. surveillance video and posts on social media are being analyzed by law enforcement in an attempt to make some arrests. they say there was a camera on the bus as well. out-of-towners police say flood

into the 880 corridor from san jose to richmond for side shows. keeping track of police on scanners and communicating privately on cell phones. it's become a regional problem. >> at international and 42nd is out of control. it's been out of control. and the only action we can do is create the barriers for the sideshow. >> for now police plan to blitz the area with beefed up patrols starting this weekend, treating sideshows like a mass protest event. >> if we find you and we catch you, we're taking you to jail. and that's it. we'll take your car. >> amazingly, there was only one injury. in oakland, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. >> thank you, leslie. one vandalized a san francisco park with swastikas. abc7 news was at buena vista park where crews were painting over the symbols. swastikas and other messages of hate were found in about a dozen areas. people living near the narcotic the haight-ashbury neighborhood say they cannot understand how

such vandalism could happen in such an area with a history of acceptance and love. >> grew up in this neighborhood. it's kind of chilling to see something like this actually happen here. this is the birthplace of the summer of love. to see somebody preaching hate in this manner is really disturbing. >> according to the pew research center, 64% of americans say jews face at least some discrimination. that's a 20-point increase from late 2016. and the share of americans who say jews face a lot of discrimination has nearly doubled to 24%. well, rain is starting to hit the bay area. so let's get right to meteorologist sandhya patel with a look at the timeline of it all. >> we are starting off the workweek with wet weather, believe it or not. take a look at live doppler 7. we are seeing some rain around parts of the bay area. let's get you into street level radar around benicia, park road, 680, goodyear road. moderate in pockets. foothill boulevard, san leandro, you're seeing some steady rain. and watch out for slippery roads on the peninsula from burlingame

to san mateo, skyline boulevard, san carlos into the south bay across san jose and will le glen. it's a level 1 on our impact scale. light to moderate rain a half an inch. occasionally breezy at times. i'll be back with the hour-by-hour timeline. >> thank you so much. today the california highway patrol confirmed the source of last friday night's concrete incident on the richmond bridge. apparently it came from a pothole. this is the third time something like this has happened. besides last friday, chunks of april fell april 5th and february 8th. understandably, drivers are nervous. abc7 news reporter wayne freedman joins us from the toll plaza with more of the so-called fallout. is there any less concern now, wayne? >> well, sure there is concern, and that's the problem. the fact that there is concern at all. and there is new talk about replacing the bridge. the question is how and when. on and around the richmond bridge, this is not a good look, and one that commuters have seen

too often in connection with this structure. three times this year the roadbed has shed concrete, including an incident from a pothole friday night. >> advise the contractor is out there. the workers is out there of this possible concrete issue and have them reinspect everything. >> it does alarm me. to be honest with you, it's quite frustrating that this continues to happen. >> this afternoon tony tavares who directs caltrans for the bay area weighed in with his concerns. >> it is an old bridge. it's almost 65 years old. it needs some love and care, if you will. >> hence an $8 million project to replace every cracking seam on the upper deck followed by a similar project on the lower deck, which leads to a question. why not build a new bridge? assemblyman mark levin has asked it. >> we know the bridge is failing. well need to have a new bridge in place. well need to have a plan now so we can build a new bridge. >> a new bridge would cost an estimated $3 million, with caltrans spending $80 million in

just the next eight years to maintain this one. >> the richmond-san rafael bridge is a really good example of the kinds of trouble facing infrastructure all around the country. >> it is one of those recurring themes presenting in the theme of too many headlines too close to home. it's worth noting that caltrans insists the structure is safe. the problem is the 60-year-old concrete roadbed. quite frankly they say it's wearing out. live at the richmond bridge toll plaza, wayne freedman, abc7 news. >> thanks a lot, wayne. people living on the crooked part of lombard have complained very long about the tourists and cars trying to drive down. >> at one point cars were banned on some saturdays. now a new solution would turn that area into a toll road. >> anser hassan has the story. >> yeah, eric and ama, you can see the crowds have thinned out here once itrt raining. but still a long line of cars

trying to make their way down lombard street. now the newest proposal, make drivers pay to use the road. from droneview7, it's easy to see why the crooked street attracts huge crowds of tourists. but from the ground, residents have a different perspective. >> i moved here 22 years ago, and it was nothing like this then. >> gray brundage says something has to be done to deal with the massive growth of tourists, especially over the past ten years. >> selfies, oh, my gosh, that in itself is an issue. >> i want to be able to make sure that this neighborhood is livable for the people who do live here. >> an assemblyman's solution setting up a reservation solution and charging visitors $5 to drive the crooked road. this show it works. you would register online, pick a day and time to visit. when your number is called, a license plate reader would verify it's your time and then enjoy the ride. the city has tried to fix the problem in the past with new signs and traffic control, but they say nothing's worked. >> they have been unable to properly manage the crowds with

the rapid growth of visitors. >> tolls you're paying more than this. this is something is starting. so why not? >> but audrey who is individualing with friends from brazil doesn't like the idea. he said tourists shouldn't be paying for the city's problem. >> thing is a touristy thing. so we should not pay for it. we're here to appreciate it and enjoy your time here. >> now this isn't a done deal. even if approved, it can take up to a year to implement. city officials say it could generate millions of dollars in revenue. reporting live in san francisco, anser hassan, abc7 news. >> thank you very much. well, the warriors are trying to accomplish what no other team has in over 50 years. making a fifth straight trip to the nba finals. and the warriors did a lot of things right in their game one win over the clippers, but there is one glaring problem that they know they need to fix for gym two and beyond.

a little more than two hours to go until tip-off of game two of the warriors first round play-offs against the clip. >> mindi bach is inside oracle arena where the warriors took game one on saturday night. mindi? >> they sure did, eric. and they did a lot of things well in that win. they had 30 assists. they had a franchise tying record of 14 blocks. but they also had 21 turnovers. this team knows that that many turnovers will not get them far in the postseason.

>> going forward we've got to do a much better job of our decision making and just the discipline of making a good sharp pass. >> at this point we expect to play at a championship level, and we want to be perfect every time out. that's impossible, but we strive for that. i'm not going to say we're not going have any turnovers, but 22 is too much. >> what helped the warriors in that win is that the clippers only scored 15 points off golden state's 21 turnovers, while the warriors scored 22 points off l.a.'s 18 turnovers. but they know that's not always going to be the case. we'll see how they handle that tonight for game twoc. >> thank you very much. luke walton has a new job. the sacramento kings have hired walton as their new coach. he was out of a job after parting ways with the l.a. lakers follow league losing seasons. before the lake. >> walton was an assistant coach with the warriors.

this year the team finished nine games out of a play-off spot. the turmoil caused by the grounding of the boeing 737 max jets won't end any time soon. >> it's going to affect summer travel plans for thousand of americans. 7 on your side's michael finney is here with that. >> thousands of flights. this is really amazing. another major u.s. airline is facing scheduling problems by grounding 737 max 8 jets. it's american. now says it will cancel flights involving those jets through august 19th. last week you may remember southwest airlines announced that it will keep those planes on the ground through early august. combined, the two airlines are cancelling, pardon me, an average of 275 flights every single day. the income tax deadline is midnight tonight. if you haven't done your taxes yet, maybe it's time to file an extension. let me show you thou do it. first, go to irs.gov, then search for extension, which will

bring up a page where form 4868 is mentioned. click on that. the form is very easy to fill out. name, address, social security number, how much you earned, what you think you owe. you will need to print that and mail it by midnight tonight, or you can go online and file electronically. i'll post a link to form 4868 on our website, abc7news.com. mark this up coming saturday. april 20th on your calendar. aside from being the counterculture cannabis holiday 4-20, this year it is the kickoff day for national park week. parks across the country are hosting special programs and events, and it all starts this saturday when all entrant fees are waived. there are 58 national parks in the united states, nine of them in california, including yosemite, channel islands, and death valley. >> and michael, to be clear on this, if you think you owe something, uncle sam will grant you an extension, but he still wants your check.

definitely be prepared. have your umbrellas out. down the peninsula, san mateo, san carlos, you're seeing the wet weather. and the wet weather is starting to push out of fairfield and vacaville right now. but not for long. here is the system. it's a level 1 system that is pushing in across the northern 2 two-thirds of the state. i want to show you this live picture from tahoe. the snow is really coming down right now. we'll take a look at the sierra where it is snowing right now in tahoe, also in blue canyon, and they will continue to see accumulating snow. winter weather advisory until 11:00 a.m. tomorrow, above 5500 feet. 8 to 12 inches of snow expected. peaks up to 16 inches of snow. light to moderate rain. totals less than half an inch and occasionally breezy. we're already seeing that. hour-by-hour, 5:30 tonight, pretty widespread rain across the region. 7:00 p.m., still pretty much a wet pattern. 9:00 p.m., we go into about 11:00, and that's when the north bay starts to see the rain

easing up. but the rest of you still wet. tomorrow morning, isolated showers can't be ruled out, especially around 5:00 a.m. the rest of you just a mix of sun and clouds. and by 7:00 a.m., this system is pretty much winding down. temperatures first thing in the morning in the 40s for a pretty much all of you. a lot of cloud cover. a few showers out there. and then tomorrow afternoon, here's how it's going to look. breezy along the coastline. temperatures coming up into the 60s for most of you. a mix of sun and clouds for your tuesday afternoon. you can download the accuweather app. track live doppler 7 any time you want, but the accuweather seven-day forecast is going to feature a major change in our weather. so, yes, isolated morning drops tomorrow are possible. and then after that, we're going with a warming trend wednesday. but notice those temperatures soaring on thursday. low 70s to low 80s. it's going to be warm in all areas. mild to warm on friday with mid 60s to low 80s. cooler pattern setting up for saturday. still pleasant. and then on sunday, eggs-elent

52-week low. it's been about two weeks since it went public, and in that period it has ended more trading days in the negative than positive. in may it will test a new products that mimics the old taxi line at airports. the goal is to eliminate people having to search for their lyft. users will now get a code when they order a ride. they then wait in a line of lyfts and give the code to the driver. we may experience fewer cases of west nile virus this summer because of our wet winter. the state department of public health says drought conditions increase the number of west nile infections. researchers aren't sure why that is. it's possible that dry conditions force mosquitos and birds into closer proximity around the limited sources of water. another theory is that droughts may put a strain on birds' immune systems, leaving them more vulnerable to infection. scientists in israel have created what they say is the world's first 3-d printed heart. it uses a patient's own cells, all but eliminating the risk of rejection. the heart is a prototype, about
