flames en building. >> the fear is officially out. it took 12 hours for crews to gain control of the flames. overnight, firefighters were seen assessing the damage. we do know many of the priceless art affects have been saved. this morning, french president is vowing to rebuild. >> josh. >> reporter: well, good morning from paris. it's now 2:30 in the afternoon here along the banks of the sensesnes -- sees. the flames were super intense as they were eating through this historic centuries old cathedral built during the middle ages. right now fire investigators, there are about 50 in there trying to figure out what led to

this in the first place they believe it had to do with the restoration project. that was ongoing and expected to take itself 20 years. obviously, that is going to take a good deal longer than that, because of the heavy, heavy damage that the cathedral sustained yesterday. there are already 2 billionaires here in paris who have agreed to contribute a combined 300 million euros, about 450 million dollars to the rebuilding effort. it's really not clear how long it will take or how much it will cost. coming back to a live picture right now. this is a new development we've seen bermuda, it's the middle of the afternoon for a tuesday. for much of the day, it's been silent, a ghost town. very few people out. now people are coming out to see the damage. there is a huge psychic hole torn in the heart of this city. notre dame is in the heart of this city and this country.
