examine two dead whales that washed up in the bay area. >> one of them was found along the edge of the bay in richmond yesterday. the other off the coast in pacifica. that's where we find jobina fortson. jobina, tell us what else do we know this morning. >> reporter: one thing we know for sure the gray whales are too thin and dying mid-migration. the whale found here in pacifica was located on a rocky beach below where i'm standing. there has been an increase of stranded whales. the necropsy manager in marin, her job to determine how these animals died. she says three or four of the whales they've necropsed this year have died of malnutrition. something is going on in the ocean causing the whales to not get food. exactly what this is is unclear. last night we talked with a

family from las vegas this town on vacation who saw a large mass on the beach in pacifica and realized it was a whale. >> i think it's really sad. i don't know what happened. >> my theory there's a lot of pollution in the ocean which made the whale not get enough food. >> reporter: a third carcass was found saturday. in that case it was discovered under a dock in hercules. for now reporting live in pacifica, jobina fortson, abc 7 news. >> jobina, much appreciated. thanks. now to the effort to rebuild notre dame cathedral after that devastating fire. >> pope francis expressed gratitude towards, quote, those who did their utmost to save the basilica and risking their lives. this morning crews hauled planks of wood to the site. they're identifying any weaknesses in the structure. it's been two days since the fire and donors have already

raised $1 billion to rebuild notre dame. the french president promised to rebuild in five years, called on architects, engineers and artists from around the world to help. he announce add competition as well to rebuild the spire on notre dame cathedral. there is no estimated total cost yet for the renovation. happening now, the search is on for a woman who made threats to schools in denver, colorado. as a precaution all public schools in the metro area including columbine high school are closed today. the fbi is on the lookout for the woman you see here. she is 18 years old and from miami. authorities say she is infatuated with the 1999 columbine high school shooting. they say she visited denver to buy a shotgun and made threats to nearby schools. >> she obtained a pump action

shotgun and ammunition. because of her procurement of a weapon immediately upon arriving here, we considered her to be a credible threat. >> the 20th anniversary of the columbine high school shooting is this saturday. authorities say the school has seen an increase in the number of threats as the anniversary approaches. dangerous side shows are spinning out of control. oakland police are vowing to crack down and oakland city leaders are supporting tough penalties. in an effort to build a better bay area, are there solutions to the problem? some people are saying yes. they're pushing for oakland to legalize side shows. >> the city could ensure there's insurance or the city could ensure there's probability liability being assumed and if you bring it into the light and legalize it, legitimize noinha proposal.

instead, three councilmembers are sponsoring assembly bill 410. it would make multiple convictions of a sideshow a felony. plus, for the first time bystanders can be charged, also. some councilmembers are calling for a social media task force. >> what would be helpful if we have opd or a certain task force to really look through social media and see where the next sideshow will be in the city. >> oakland police will increase patrols starting this weekend. to the east bay now, a restaurant in lafayette plans to, quote, be back in no time. the restaurant on mt. diablo boulevard caught fire just before 7:00 last night. amy hollyfield took the video you see here. fire crews say they were cautious to preserve the historic building that was built in the 1930s. they had to deal with spot fires that flared up in the attic.

look at the wide range of temperatures on the peninsula from 41 at menlo park and to belmont, 51. half moon bay at 50. let's check out some other neighborhoods. 50 in san francisco. 54 in oakland. concord, 51. everybody else just a little bit warmer this morning. mid to upper 40s. signs of spring to summer. look at that. a little bit of fog developing along the coast. isn't that gorgeous as it is sitting right under sutro tower. everything will be good other than a lot of pollen and strong sunshine. our beaches will be warmer and calmer. 46 at 7:00. jump to the 50s. 60s by 11:00.

we'll stay in the low 70s throughout most of the afternoon. east bay, same kind of stair step. 49 at 7:00. mid to upper 60s this afternoon. san francisco, once we get all that sunshine, the low to mid-60s from lunch through 5:00. it gets even warm. trying to sort out an issue traffic break on westbound 80 around the 101 connector. now it looks like activity on the other side of the roadway. the ramp to continue northbound on 101 so central freeway and you can see we have at least the right lane blocked here. at least two vehicles involved in a crash. police are there. still trying to sort out the exact location. we have a backup in any case. right around that area with

apple is facing a class action lawsuit today. ceo tim cook is listed among the defendants. according to apple insider it is on behalf of all apple stockholders and accuses apple and its exec tichs of making false and misleading claims of earnings forecasts. abc 7 news is reaching out to apple for comment. also, the groundbreaking for the new tennis center.

responding to a different crash when suddenly they saw a car coming directly at them. >> despite the fact they were full lights and sirens in all lanes, the vehicle continued traveling at them causing both of them to have to actually swerve to avoid being hit. >> the vehicle crashed into the car directly behind the officers. the woman driving the wrongway car died at the scene. the other driver suffered minor injuries. the highway 37 transition reopened about 12:30 this morning. in the north bay a marin county school districtan i cont. the dixie school district board voted for the name change last night. critics argued the word dixie is too closely linked to slavery and the confederate south. it will include the elementary school which is also named

identifying weaknesses in the structure. french president emanuel pamanun has pledged to rebuild within five years. notre dame will be closed during that time. bells will also ring across france in commemoration of the fire. ♪ >> the cause of the fire is still under investigation but officials say they believe it was an accident. and new this morning, disney is stepping in to help with the rebuilding. the ceo bob iger sent out this tweet in the last hour saying, quote, notre dame is a beacon of faith, hope and beauty, inspiring disney is the parent company of abc 7.

in palm springs. low to mid-60s along the coast and also up in the mountains look at this, plenty of snow. a hard time staying around if you're in the sun light because it's not going to refreeze at night with temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. right now a live look here at the notre dame cathedral in paris where there are workers there this morning. in fact, we've seen throughout the morning them spraying some water on the building. we assume they are checking for hot spots this morning making sure that building is structurally sound as renovation efforts are just starting to be thought about. still, that massive fire we saw with so much destruction just two days ago. it does seem that part of the building is secure.
