the fire department is preparing to save people from strong rip currents. abc 7 news was at ocean beach yesterday joined by ocean rescue teams training session. captain frank shay says the current change with the tides, they are treacherous even for experienced swimmers. >> if you're around the water and past the breakers and a long shore current flowing four or five knots, you will get sucked north or south and that's typically what happens when beach-goers out and not a flotati flotation device, they don't have a flotation device, they kept swept past the cliphouse and then people cling on to the rock and we have a lot of rescues from the rock. >> and patrols will be visiting the beaches during easter break and warning people to be extra cautious at cliff areas like forlt funston and land's end. the toll plaza is two booths

short after a fire. a box truck caught fire and flames spread to tollbooths six and seven. the toll plaza is on the martinez side of the bridge which connects contra costa county and solano counties. the booths are destroyed. take a look. thankfully no one was hurt a chp spokesperson says they're looking into how long the repairs will take. it's not clear what caused the fire. crews are making progress, on repairs to the sales force transit center in san francisco. officials say work on the fremont street portion will finish up this weekend. in order to remove some construction material, the section of fremont street will be closed overnight for a month. this starts tomorrow. all work on the center is expected to be done by june. but there is no date, no set date to reopen the transit center. for those craving one last run down the slopes at tahoe, you're in luck. there is still snow up in the sierra. as you can see from this video taken yesterday, in south lake tahoe, several of the resorts

replacement phonak for the classroom. alicia says she wants to be a police girl when she grows up to catch the bad guys. the future of the oakland almeda county coliseum site is coming to an end. on tuesday the county board of supervisors will vote on the offer to buy out the county's interest in the property which it co-owns with the city of oklahoma. a's president says the team has big plans for the site. >> this is an important step in our process to make sure we can build a privately-financed stadium at the water front and honor east oakland with a great new development in that part of the town. >> the a's coliseum development plan calls for keeping oracle arena leading the baseball field and bringing down the stadium around it and building housing and commercial buildings. the traditional easter ham might cost a little more this year. pork prices have gone up steadily and hit an average of $4.31 a pound last month. that's the highest since march of 2015.

san jose, i think the clouds will linger a little bit longer on the peninsula, the east bay, and we will get some clearing as this front pushes north to south. so a live look outside, from our camera, you can see the low cloud cover and the marine layer up to 2,000 feet so lots of fog out, there and clouds. we will have those brisk winds. and patchy brizle this morning. dramatically cooler inland today. and then look for milder temperatures for easter tomorrow. and then a much warmer week ahead. this time, we're getting into the offshore flow and let's talk about sunday, where we will see a lot of sunshine, and mid 70s in concord, and mid 60s on the coast, and without the wind, it is going to feel a lot better out there for your sunday afternoon, and into monday, and 80s arrive inland, mid-70s around the bay, and on the coast, still pleasant in the 60s, but as we get into tuesday, this should be one of the warmest days of the week, where highs will be in the low to mid-80s warmer than that south of us and plenty of 70s from san

francisco to sausalito and this happens as the high pressure builds behind the front. the trend in concord will be today once again, the coolest day out of the next seven, upper 60s, then we will see upper 70s tomorrow, so a big jump on sunday, and then look at the 80s, monday, tuesday, wednesday, and then cooler weather, for the end of the week, into next weekend. so the winds right now, pretty gusty, 33 miles an hour gusts mount diablo. 27 miles an hour mount tam. and the cloud cover is thick out there. thickest in the morning with some of the mist and the drizzle. by about 10:30, 11:00, we will continue to see that along the peninsula. and maybe even some moisture being rung out from the clouds. and then we'll look at that clearing throughout the afternoon. so highs today in the low to mid 60s. oakland, san francisco, 64, san mateo, breezy here, so a cool afternoon, with some low 70s, where you get sun, a little bit longer out there, throughout the day, and japantown this weekend, today, cooler, and breezy, and low 60s. and mid 60s for a milder afternoon on sunday. and the accu-weather seven-day

welcome back. happening today, you can take part in several earth day events in the east bay. one event will be held at the john muir national historic site in martinez, there will be live music and exhibits by national parks and local environmental organizations. muir who famously took teddy roosevelt camping in yosemite is considered by many to be the father of american environmently. . the celebration starts at 10:00 this morning. earth day is on monday. yosemite national park will kick off earth day festivities early today and in honor of national park week, which also starts today, admission to the park is free. there will be music, games and other activities at yosemite village. smoky the bear will also be holding a meet and greet. and visitors can enjoy the spectacular views at yosemite. no entrance fee today but camping and other fees still

apply. and in contra costa county, another earth day celebration in richmond. the ninth annual event includes several community service projects. there will be free food, performance, a petting zoo and live music. it runs from 11:00 to 2:00 this afternoon, at shields reed community park. winter is coming for game of thrones fans and one star on the hit show made an appearance in san francisco. abc 7 news was at the at&t store on powell street where isaac hemp stead-wright, the actor who plays graham stark met with fans and there were outfits and props from the set and a virtual reality experience and an opportunity for fans to sit on the iron throne. hemp stead-wright wouldn't give away major spoilers with the major reunion with jamie, the cliff hanger at the end of the last episode. >> clearly, he has something to say to him. he has been waiting up for him for hours and hours. he doesn't give much away.

we will look for the clouds to thin out late in the day. right now you can see the breeze kicking up around the bay. upper elevations, 25 to 35 mile-an-hour winds due to the cold front. so as we get through about 9:00, notice the green. could see mist and drizzle along the coast, the peninsula, and even over into campbell or perhaps cupertino, and fremont. then we're looking at partly cloudy skies. 50s and 60s to be cooler and sunnier but today is the coolest day out of the next seven. >> lisa, thank you. a violent storm through the south has killed an 8-year-old girl in florida. it has brought tornados to the carolinas and virginia. take a look. a tree fell on a house yesterday in woodville florida, killing the girl and injuring a 12-year-old boy. the same storm is blamed for three deaths earlier this month in mississippi and alabama. the governor of mississippi has declared a state of emergency, the worst of the storm is over, but there may be flash flooding throughout the weekend. developing news, senator elizabeth warren is the first

presidential candidate to call for the house of representatives to start impeachment proceedings against president trump. this comes after a redacted robert mueller report found no trump campaign collusion with russia around the 2016 election. but mueller did find that the president did make several attempts to interfere with the investigation. senator warren says it would be damaging to ignore the president's repeated efforts to obstruct the investigation into his own disloyal behavior. new body cam video shows a dramatic rescue of passengers inside two burning cars in new jersey. >> come here. give me your hand. >> i'm on fire. >> give me your hand. >> four state troopers pulled the victims out of their burning cars just seconds before they completely go up in flames. the officers were honored for their heroism for saving all four passengers. two of the victims were badly burned. today marks the 20th anniversary of the columbine high school shooting. the attack left 13 people dead in the town of littleton,

colorado. there will be community service projects and a ceremony to remember the 12 students and teacher who were killed. this comes just days after an 18-year-old from florida who police say was obsessed with the 1999 shooting died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound near the school. thieves trying to score big in waulnut creek will want to think twice. the police department released this video of a 17-year-old girl allegedly getting into a car and throughout he got away with a purse but it was one of the police department's bait vehicles and the purse had a gps tracking unit in it that alerted dispatchers. >> we would like to have any thieves that are coming into walnut creek, thinking of stealing items out of a car to have in the back of their mind the thought that maybe i shouldn't be doing this, it might be owned by the police department and they might be tracking me. >> police arrested the teen at a nearby hotel. even with the program to catch crooks, officers would like to remind people not to leave anything out in plain sight that

behind it. so you can certainly make it out here on our satellite picture. visibility just about a mile here. from half moon bay. elsewhere, not too bad. five miles at the airport. and the san carlos airport. temperatures are pretty much all in the 50s. 54 half moon bay. san mateo and oakland. with 50 in heyward. it is certainly damp out there. if you thought about turning the sprinklers on. you have them on, you don't need them this morning, because we have enough moisture out there, being rung out from thes atmosphere that perhaps a nice layer of water on the grass and flowers out there. fog and clouds, patchy morning drizzle, dramatically cooler today, inland, and looking for a mild a milder day tomorrow for easter and much warmer for the upcoming workweek. here is how it looks tomorrow. temperatures climbing three to five degrees from concord to antioch and our inland valleys. but around the bay, yes it will feel better. the winds back off. in the upper 60s to mid 60s here. and by monday, we're in the 80s inland.

70s around the bay. so a big jump from monday into tuesday. and even wednesday, when a big dome of high pressure sits right overhead. very little wind. if we have any, it is going to be from the offshore component from our inland valleys, out to sea, but today, right now, look at that wind gst, up to 41 miles an hour, mount diablo, mount tam, and 27 miles an hour, so we are far from that, with a lot of low clouds. mist and drizzle. and as we go through the next several hours, they're thick. we will begin to see them thin out as we get into the afternoon. as this front moves to the southeast. you can see the clearing in the north bay by late morning and then in the afternoon, elsewhere, a little bit of sunshine, but a cool day today with just upper 50s at the coast. windy there. and we're talking just low 60s in san francisco. mid 60s palo alto. and the forecast for easter sunday. a lot of sunshine. a warmer afternoon. and we'll look for temperatures to climb through the 60s. and this is by noontime. so by the afternoon, in the mid-70s inland and low 70s

around the bay. and still kind of cool at the coast and then tonight we're in the 40s and 50s with the skies clearing. the accu-weather seven-day forecast, cool today. blustery, upper 50s coast to 70 inland and bright for easter sunday and warmer for earth day on monday, those offshore winds will keep it maybe toasty inland while it stays pretty mild at the coast, but the coast is still going to warm up as well midweek. >> i'll take the warmer temperatures. >> i think so. >> lisa, thanks. scientists say three whales recently found dead in the bay area have died from strikes by ships. two of the whales were found in the bay last week, scientists think they were a mother and her calf but they have to do genetic testing for confirmation. the whales swam into the bay into busy ship traffic. scientists say people can do more to prevent accidents like this. >> the shipping speeds and the shipping lanes and all of that are issues that constantly under review. and we feed the information from our necropsies to the people who make these decisions on where

the ships should go and the speeds and we're helping out with that process. >> scientists say a third whale found in pafrs pacifica this week also died from trauma from a ship strike. a bay area woman got a surprise call from a stranger telling her she had money waiting for her. wisely, she was skeptical. 7 on your side explains how it all ended with happy tears. >> julie courtney has been a bay area real estate agent for more than 15 years. ten years ago, she specialized in selling foreclosed home for the first federal bank of california. >> in listing the bank-owned homes, you have to put a lot of your own money out, for example, fixing them up, painting, flooring. >> julie submitted some 58,000 dollars in expenses. five days later, the fdic shut down her bank, along with others, like washington mutual, downy and pomona firstle from. >> one west bank came in and took over first federal bank of

california and they said we don't owe you that money, that's first federal bank's debt. >> julie filed a claim with the fdic but never heard back. she wrote the money off as a loss. then, ten years later, she received an unexpected call. >> hey there, he said in 2009, did you file a claim against the fdic, and i said yes keep talking. >> and the caller referred her to the fdic web site and asked her to type in her name and the name of the failed bank. >> sure enough, it is not shear because they mailed me my check. >> julie received a call from someone known as a fund finder and an entrepreneurial person who finds people who are due money and told her he worked on the honor system. but if she received any money back, to give him a tip of 10%. her next step was to call the fdic to find out how much money she really had coming if any. >> she says yeah, you have a check here for $58,000.
