there's a crack down under way in oakland to try to prevent sideshows this weekend. >> those winds were whipping today over 40 miles an hour but much warmer weather greets us sunday. in san francisco where hundreds of people are getting together to hike up to a local landmark for easter. abc 7 news starts right now. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. on the lookout for sideshows this weekend and they're cracking down. officers will be out in full force tomorrow. >> our abc reporter has more on their strategy. >> we will be beefing up our personnel in the city and joining forcewise ts with the p department. >> reporter: the crack down is

on leave. sideshows plaguing oak lnld. just last sunday a big rig was set on fire. the truck driver was then car jacked. >> our officers are dealing with gunshots, two vehicles that had been set on fire and trying to help navigate the oakland fire department and to deal with what was going on. >> reporter: in other words, the police were understaffed and overwhelmed and this time they promise things will be very different. >> if we find you and catch you, we're taking you to jail. >> reporter: a community organizer, she worries what the crack down will mean for minority youth. >> if you do actually apprehend people engaged in sideshows, what are the diversion programs and alternatives to incarceration we can provide to our young people. >> reporter: still many agree the oakland sideshows are growing larger, and more violent. impound their cars for a month and make driving in and even watching a sideshow a crime, the

councilman cosponsored the bill. he'll be testifying before an assembly subcommittee about the sideshows on tuesday. tuesday's winds may have been too much for the trees of san francisco. it appears the top of this tree snapped off and crashed down onto the sidewalk this afternoon. some power lines were also taken down as well. it happened near lion street about 1:00 p.m. the public was asked to avoid the area while crews worked to clear up the debris. just down the street a huge tree came down on drew tuma will have a check on the weather in just minutes. a rescue effort to save a 4-year-old girl on a floating unicorn. she was blown halfway across the lake from mackenzie ridge beach.

kayakers saw her and brought her to the shores of big island. anappa county sheriffs brought her back to her parents. she was wearing the proper flotation device in all of this. woo have new details about how it played out. city officials say 19,000 people attended. police say seven people were arrested in and around the event. two for warrants, two for theft, one for trespassing and two for assault. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard was at golden gate park. he has more on the first since recreational marijuana was legalized. >> as the clock struck 4/20, thousands of joints were lit. a cloud of smoke rose, but make

4/20. a mendocino pot farmer is here for the first time. is it everything you hoped it would be? >> and more. the world's changing and all for the better. everyone's coming together. the flower brings the most beautiful people together. >> reporter: emts took two people to the hospital today. they say those injuries were not related to fentanyl. new developments now, a body that was pulled from the bay last night has been identified as a missing man. the 28-year-old tyler collins was recovered about nine miles north of where he vanished. collins first disappeared match 26th. the coast guard searched 60 square miles in 15 hours before that search was called off. his family said they hired a private helicopter and boat to keep looking. in the east bay a car wash fund-raiser today raised money for the oakland family involved in a deadly hit-and-run saturday

night. community members took part in the drive for the garcia vasquez family. they were killed when a car hit them at 26th avenue and foothill boulevard. angel's uncle was also hit and in critical condition. the money raised will help the family with fuel expenses. >> whatever money the people want to give we're just here to support. from the community and from other cities around have been here to support the family. >> police identified the driver. he's not been located. the city has already repainted the pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection where the crash happened and will install a new pedestrian island early next week. researchers are continuing to dig into what a slew of recent ipo companies will mean for san francisco's real estate market. this week the atlantic published some new data from a software engineer who combed through real

uh one of america's largest crosses is located right here in the bay area. hundreds of people are planning to hike in a couple of hours to catch the sunrise and celebrate easter in san francisco's highest peak. >> abc 7 reporter lewis pina has the story of the once controversial cross. >> reporter: elevation 928 feet, 103 feet tall, the emblematic white cross at the peak of mount davidson is impossible to miss. >> it signifies faith and hope and history. >> reporter: history that dates back to 1934, when even the president took notice. >> this particular cross is dedicated by president franklin roosevelt. >> reporter: he has a deeper connection to this cross. just look at his face, it lights up the same way this cross will light up at 6:30 a.m. for the easter service when he talks about his love. >> i was married here to my wife kathleen, so it's near and dear

to my heart and i live in the neighborhood. >> reporter: but what is a love story without some turmoil. this cross had its fights. in 1981 several organizations sued the city of san francisco for owning a cross on what was then public land. >> the city would then auction off the top part of the land here thereby separating church and state, and so this part of the top of the mountain is owned by the council of armenian organizations of northern california. >> reporter: as part of the deal with thit sea the cross can only be lit on april 24th and on easter. elizabeth and gene are looking forward to it. >> annual easter hike up here to see the cross. >> how many years have been been doing that for? >> about fbi yeafive years. >> reporter: this year they're

accuweather highlights and the big headlines going to be those winds relaxing over the next 12 hours. for easter sunday a lot of sunshine, really light winds and a warmer afternoon on the way for sunday. and that's going to be very nice to finish the holiday. and the weheat and going to increase even more. and by midweek we're going to get a taste of some summer heat in spots. 24, though, in half moon bay. but outdoors the winds are less than 10 miles an hour, which is a huge improvement over the active breezes we had earlier today. 51 in oakland, the same in san francisco. we're at 53 right now in san jose. and san ramon coming in at 50 degrees. live doppler 7 earlier this morning we had a cold front sweep through here, and move through dry. so there's no precipitation with it. it kicked up our winds and ushered in some cooler air.

it's a special late edition of aeb the abc 7 news because of the airing of the ten commandments. in headlines right now authorities in oakland say they are taking a zero-tolerance approach to sideshows this weekend. all of it followed several violent ones last weekend that resulted in a box truck and an ac by fire. hundreds are expected to celebrate in san francisco. this will be the 97th annual

nondenomination sunrise there. and here's drew with a check on the forecast. today the winds were certainly an issue. sunday, though, we'll see those winds calm down. they are gradually easing tonight. we'll see winds pretty much less than about 20 mields les an hou most spots. and tomorrow afternoon a warmer day. we'll take a look at those numbers and the accuweather forecast when i see you in a few minutes. breaking news coming out of sri lanka right now after dozens of people have been killed after explosions at churches. hundreds more have been wounded. the first blast targeted st. anthony's shrine in the capital city of culumbo. that city is catholic majority and located north of the capital. there are reports of other

explosions at hotels frequented by foreigners. 12 students and one teeper were killed in the mass shooting. it wasn't the first school shooting, but two decades ago it signaled a cycle of deadly and violent tragedies including virginia tech, sandy hook and parkland, florida. this year's remembrance hit them harder. >> this year's for some reason a lot harder. i don't know if it's all the media outpouring that it's 20 years. >> well, the massacre prompted many schools to write crisis plans and hold active shooter drills. in developing news a tiger mauled a zoo keeper at the topeka zoo in kansas. the zoo director says the worker is the primary tiger keeper. she suffered injuries to the back of her head and neck and is in stable condition. a spokesperson says the zoo keeper was alert when she was taken to the hospital. >> this happened when the zoo was open.

some people did see the incident, you know, which is very unfortunate. >> three other zoo workers are credited with saving the worker who was attacked. the zoo director says the tiger recently fathered four cubs and did what a tiger would do when something comes into its area. he says the zoo did not even consider euthanizing the tiger. and search is on in riverside county for a woman caught on security cameras throwing seven newborn puppies into a carbage heap. this is video from a napa outy parts store. the woman drives up to the dumpster with a bag, peers inside and tosses the puppies off to the side. then she drives away. a good samaritan ends up spotting the puppies and were taken inside the store. the puppies about three days old and believed to be terrier mixes. riverside police uncovered one of the largest marijuana farms ever to pop up in a southern california community. police raided the ten acre

property friday, the size of a city block. they found 40,000 marijuana plants growing inside a large greenhouse. it's estimated street value at $20 million. no rests have been made. a neighbor said the land was sold six months ago and the new owner put up a fence, then a strong permanent odor started coming from it. he assumed police would have been alerted to it grow site by the odor. george zimmerman had been banned from the dating site tinder. a statement from tinder cited user safety as a reason for removing zimmerman's profile. an article by florida news and evnlt site said zimmerman was using a fake name on tinder. zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting of martin. due to repairs to the sales force transit center, starting today a section of fremont street will be closed overnight

from # p.m. to 5:00 a.m. for a month so crews can remove construction materials. this will affect a one block stretch of fremont between howard and mission street. cracked steel beams caused the center to close in september. there's no official reopening day. >> enjoy a bit of italy a bit longer. a ravioli institution in the mission says it is pushing back its final closing date.

at this building you see here which they've owned since 1925. >> i've enjoyed it for many years now, so it's been a nice experience in san >> well, the owner's selling the building. he's facing the same issue many long time establishments has run into, he has no one to take over the business. all his children have other interests. abc 7 news is committed to covering the issues that affect us all. on saturday a san francisco neighborhood got some encouragement to go green. abc 7 news wassen in the bay view neighborhood with elementary and middle school kids hosted a cleanup event to celebrate earth day this monday. they recently visited taiwan to learn more about recycling in their community as comprehensive neighborhood revitalization. a non-profit group also joined in the neighborhood.

the neighborhood also received a federal grant to help fund revitalization plans. on that note, we want to hear your ideas about building a belter bay area. i don't think they teach this in medical school, but a pothole might have helped a patient suffering from a cardiac issue. the 59-year-old man was being rushed to the hospital in an abulance. he had a rapid heartbeat. at one point it was 200 beats a minute. the ambulance was jolted by a pothole and the man's heart rhythm went back to normal. doctors say it's rare but it can happen. >> one way to treat that is electrical shock. the paddle is clear and a big jolt. turns out you can do that with a pothole. >> a friend of the man says he was discharged and will recover at home. by that, san francisco should be the cardiac capital of the world. potholes we got. >> and it's a lot cheaper.
