allow for warmth today with temperatures near 60 at the coast but much less wind. inland will be upper 70s by the afternoon. it's going to be a pretty good warmup right at noon where temperatures will be up around the 60s in the bay and inland. we'll talk about the very warm week ahead that starts tomorrow. chris? on this easter sunday, pope francis celebrated easter mass at the vatican this morning. ♪ >> tens of thousands of people filled the square for easter mass. in his message to the city and the world speech, the pope offered a pardon for sins and a reflection on the world's war-ravaged areas. he also paid tribute to catholics who practice their faith in the

persecution. >> translator: may he make us builders of bridges, not walls. and may there be an end to the arms race and the troubled spread of weaponry, especially in the economically more advanced countries. >> pope francis also called for peace for the entire world. one of america's largest crosses is located here in the bay area. hundreds of people are planning to hike this morning to catch the sunrise and celebrate easter on san francisco's highest peak. abc 7 news reporter lee pepepepe the story of the most controversial cross. >> reporter: elevation 128 feet. the white cross at the peak of mt. davidson is impossible to miss. >> it signifies faith and hope and history. >> reporter: history that dates back to 1934 when even the president took notice. >> this particular cross is dedicated by president franklin roosevelt. >> reporter: he has a deep

devotion to this cross. look at his face that will light up at the 6:00 >> i live in the neighborhood. it doesn't get better than this. >> reporter: this cross had its fights. in 1991, several organizations sued the city of san francisco for owning a cross on what was then public land. >> the city worked out a plan whereby they would auction off the top part of the land here, thereby separating church and state, so this part of the top of the mountain is owned by the council armenian organizations of northern california. >> reporter: as part of the deal, the cross can only be lit on april 24th and on easter. elizabeth and james perez are looking forward to it. >> an annual easter hike up here to see the cross. >> reporter: how many years have you been doing that for? >> probably about five years.

>> reporter: during world war ii, more than 50,000 people gathered together at san francisco's highest peak. this year they're expecting 500. >> it looks like the weather will be nice, so it should be a good turnout. we've got great music, weaver got salvation army brass ensemble. >> this will be the fifth nondenominational service where others see it as a symbol will still be hard to miss. abc 7 news. in san francisco, the glide memorial church is holding two services. there will also be a hot breakfast starting at 7:30 this morning and a fried chicken meal will be served for lunch. the church serves those who might not have a place to go

this easter sunday. the church has been serving meals for more than five decades. a task force is on the lookout for side shows in oakland this weekend and they're cracking down. officers will be out in full force today. abc 7 news reporter lisa amin has more on their strategy. >> we will be beefing up our personnel within the city and joining forces with the oakland police department. >> reporter: the crackdown is on leave, side shows plaguing east oakland. last sunday a transit bus and a big rig was set on fire. the truck driver was then hijacked. >> they're trying to keep things from being set on fire and helping navigate with the fire department to deal with what was going on. >> reporter: the staff was overwhelmed. >> if we find you, we'll take

you to jail. >> reporter: she worries what the crackdown will mean for minority youth. >> where are the diversion programs? where are the alternatives to incarceration we can provide our young people? >> reporter: still, many agree side shows are growing more violent and are scaring people. on tuesday the city council voted unanimously to back a state assembly bill that would heavily fine side show participants, impound their cars for a month, and make even driving or watching a side show a crime. the mayor has started the bill and wants the public to do more. >> reporter: he will be testifying before a subcommittee about the side shows on tuesday. in oakland, lisa amin, abc 7 news. in oakland, a four-year-old girl needed saved on a

unicorn. she was brought back to her parents. she was wearing proper flotation devices during all of this, as you can see in the selfie she took with the deputy that helped with the rescue. a body that was pulled from the bay friday night has been identified as a missing man from merced county. according to the merced sun star, 28-year-old tyler collins was recovered at fort bunceton in pacifica about 19 miles away from where he vanished. he first was missing on march 26. his family told the merced sun star they hired a private helicopter and boat to keep looking. in the east bay, a car wash fundraiser raised money for the oakland family involved in a deadly hit and run last weekend. community members, along with the police department local 55, took part in the drive for the

garcia-vasquez family. six-year-old angel garc garcia-vazquez and his mother were killed when a car hit them. angel's brother was also hit and hurt in the accident. >> we just want to help them. other communities around have been here to support the family. >> reporter: police identify the driver and he has not been located. where the crash happened, they will install a new pedestrian island this week. a slew of recent and upcoming ipos of san francisco-based companies will mean for the city's real estate market. a software engineer is combing through real estate records. he found a number of workers at the san francisco-based company

is expected to hold ipos this year. just 37,000 bought houses in 2018. many more workers could be in the market for a home, pushing prices even higher. time now, 5:08 on this sunday morning. lisa has been keeping an eye on that forecast. a little warmer today. >> that's right. we had some wicked wind yesterday and that is gone. it will still be breezy at the coast but we're looking at high pressure building in and that means a milder day today. today should be pretty nice, near average, until we really turn on the heat this week. it is 49 in san francisco right now. we will be well into the 70s by the middle of the week here. i'll have your accuweather forecast. how thousands of stoners celebrated another year of marijuana legalization. plus the first of its kind visit that the easter bunny made in san jose.

fentanyl-laced cannabis edibles and they had to be taken to the hospital. >> reporter: later in the day, check out how long this line was to get into 4/20. pot farmer rocky balboa is here for the first time. >> it's everything we hoped it would be. >> and more. the world is changing for the better. everybody is coming together. the flower brings everybody together. >> medics took two people to the hospital. the city says those injuries were not related to fentanyl. strong winds may have been too much for the trees of san francisco yesterday. it appears the top of this tree snapped off and crashed down onto the sidewalk yesterday afternoon. some power lines also went down as well. it happened on post street near lion street. around 1:00 p.m. the public was asked to avoid the area while crews cleefrd tared the debris. just down the street, a tree

came down at fillmore and post. the tree blocked both lanes of the street for a short period. time now is 7:14. there are changes ahead for the work week. lisa argen tracking the weather for us on this easter. hi, lisa. >> hi, chris. along the san mateo coast we have high pressure building in. numbers are in the low 40s in napa. the cool spot 53 in oakland, 46 in hayward. fremont, 48 for you, as well as mountain view and san mateo. that is certainly colder than we were yesterday with all the cloud cover. even that light rain visiting us. looking to be about 6 degrees cooler in concord. the visibility right now at the coast with a little bit of fog. 3 miles half moon bay. pretty good elsewhere. livermore is at 6 miles. your forecast sunny and mild this afternoon. much warmer this week. we'll begin that dramatic

warming trend tomorrow. it's going to last until thursday, expecting a little coastal cooling on thursday. mid-70s around the bay to low 80s, so heat increasing quickly. we'll see low 70s in san francisco. considering today, it's going to be in the low 60s. it's a big jump from today to tomorrow. then look what happens on tuesday. we're in the mid-80s from concord to san jose and a little bit of warming here at the shoreline. the winds are going offshore and that's going to bring us into the upper 80s by wednesday. so yeah, it's certainly a 180. it's going to feel really hot out there but we will get good cooling in the overnight hours, maybe a little bit of a surprise to the system to be so warm so quickly. we will be looking at 60s at the coast and sunny skies there in the south bay. nice afternoon, 74 today in san jose. look for 72 in milpitas. on the peninsula, upper 60s. all that wind yesterday, no. we're going to see a coastal sea breeze up to 20 miles an hour.

otherwise that will allow temperatures to warm to the low 70s from mountan view to palo alto. san francisco a nice afternoon up to 65. in the north bay, looking at upper 70s for you in santa rosa, 74 in san rafael. sausalito near east bay, 69 near berkeley. san leandro and castro valley, 74 in fremont. inland numbers jumping up to the upper 70s. with that wind backing off, those cool ocean temperatures allowing the cool air to be transported inland. we won't see as much of that and will be confined just to the bay. that's why such a big warmup in our inland valleys. 60 at the coast, 70 around the bay. upper 70s inland for this easter sunday. then tomorrow we will jump as much as six to eight degrees around the bay. coastal temperatures will stay cool until about tuesday, then that offshore flow gets going where we really see the winds

want a bank account. so here's the question. are cashless stores discriminating against the poor? 7 on your side's michael finney says the debate on how money is accepted is not new to the city or even our times. >> when amazon go launched in san francisco, there were no lines because there were no cashiers. download an app, pick up items and just walk out. to many it seemed like the logical next step, even if they felt a bit queasy. >> i felt weird. i felt like i was stealing from amazon. >> reporter: what was pitched as new just last year actually has a history in the bay area. nine years ago next month, diane campbell tried to buy an ipad at the palo alto apple store but was turned away because she only had cash, no credit or debit cards. when i told her story, she spoke directly to the top of apple. >> mr. jobs, give a sister a break, okay? i'm not going to go sell my

ipad. >> reporter: the story went viral. ron johnson was senior vice president of apple at the time. >> we want to make sure it's as fair as possible for people to get ipads. >> reporter: apple had put the no cash system in place in order to be fair. but it didn't work out like that. >> we said we would like you to use a credit card when you buy your ipad. that was the only way we could think of to make sure people only bought two per individual. then it came to our attention that diane, through your story, was very interested in buying an ipad with cash. we made an effort to change that. >> reporter: but now we have stores like amazon go that don't take cash. here's the sign on their front door. even food trucks are saying no to those trying to use legal tender. we are cashless. this has sparked a backlash nationwide saying they're discriminating against the poor or even just the unlucky. in philadelphia, james k.

smith's debit card was eaten by his atm. he left sweet green without his salad. >> why don't you accept the cash? >> they will not take cash. >> they became the first city to ban cashless stores, following a statewide ban in new jersey. now it's san francisco at >> we have a large he can with it -- equity and wealth gap here and we should be finding ways to make teaseier to live here. >> reporter: they exempt food trucks, pop-ups, rideshares and many professional services. but most stores and restaurants would be required to take cash. >> i always say cash is king and i'm like, if you have cash, you should be able to go anywhere you want. >> a vote on the ban is set for next month and is expected to easily pass and become law. massachusetts has had a must accept cash law for nearly four years. the federal government has no laws, requiring any payment

type, including cash. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. abc 7 news is committed to covering issues that affect us all as we continue to build a better bay area. a san francisco neighborhood got some encouragement to go green yesterday. abc 7 news was in the bay view neighborhood where elementary and middle school kids hosted a spring cleanup event to celebrate earth day this monday. they recently visited taiwan to learn more about increasing cycling in their community as part of comprehensive neighborhood revitalization. a non-profit group also joined in the effort. the neighborhood recently received a $30 million federal grant, one of the first awarded in the country, to help fund revitalization plans. we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. share your ideas on better bay area on facebook. 100 new students are the proud owners of brand new bicycles. more than 40 rotary club members

held their bike build service project yesterday. each year the club pitches in the money for the parts they need and spend the day putting the bikes together. the san francisco school district pairs the club with students in need and the police department shows up to teach the kids the rules of the road. the project is a win for everyone involved. >> many of them are third, fourth and fifth graders who haven't had the opportunity before to have a bike of their own. >> each student got a bicycle, a helmet, and of course, a lock. learning to ride a bike is actually part of the student curriculum. this season the easter bunny made a stop to a special house in san jose, the winchester mystery house yesterday held its first ever easter egg hunt. children got to search for more than 5,000 treat-filled eggs hid in the winchester estate's victorian garden, and we're happy to report that the 19th century ghosts that were rumored to haunt the mansion were nowhere to be found.

degrees cooler this morning and we'll look at that trend to reverse as we get into warmer air this afternoon. 9:00, mid to upper 50s. by 1:00, we're in the 60s and even low 70s in the inland valleys. lots of sunshine. nice and mild, temperatures above average today, and by the evening hours we'll be back into the 50s at the coast. but we're looking at an offshore flow for your monday. that's going to bring some big time heat around here. i'll track it for you in a few minutes. lisa, thank you. breaking news, more than 200 people are dead and 450 are injured after easter sunday bombings in sri lanka. there were explosions in multiple churches. officials say seven suspects have been arrested. news reporter elizabeth herr has the latest. >> reporter: deadly bombs blasting through three hotels and three churches as worshippers gathered for services. all the targets, especially st.

anthony's shrine, popular with tourists. at least two of the blasts reportedly carried out by suicide bombers and the victims carried away from blood-stained pews. chaos and carnage as grief-stricken relatives frantically searched for his loved ones. this man searching for his wife and son. police so far say the attacks appear to be coordinated. elizabeth herr, abc news, new york. during easter mass this morning, pope francis took some time to talk about the explosions in sri lanka. he is condemning the cruel violence of the attacks. >> translator: i would like to express my heart felt closeness to the christian people in prayer. i entrust to the lord all those who so tragically died, and i pray for the wounded and all those who suffer because of this traumatic event. >> several world leaders are

also denouncing the attacks, including the prime minister of new zealand. that's where shootings at two mosques left 50 people dead last month. people in paris are holding easter services this year without the notre dame cathedral. officials believe the fire started at the central of the cathedr cathedral's roof. we're in paris with the details. >> reporter: it's an easter in paris against a backdrop no one could have imagined, one without notre dame. he is a photographer and took these pictures as the iconic cathedral's spire came crashing down. >> i saw a lot of people crying. it was contentious crying because i wanted to cry, too. i looked around and i see people of all religions watching and feeling bad of the situation. it's not about religion, it's about humans. >> reporter: it's an impact that's been felt across the

world, but especially in france where president emanuel macron hopes to rebuild in a matter of years. meanwhile the investigation into the fire's origin continues. prosecutors have been looking at whether an electrical short circuit was to blame. >> the building just got so small for a minute as the flames took over. >> reporter: jackie gibson's pastry shop is right across the street from the cathedral. >> the only time we ever go to church is christmas and easter and we go to notre dame because that's our church. >> reporter: and it's one that's still standing, as it has for hundreds of years. but one that almost burned down in a matter of hours. in paris, i'm omar jimenez reporting. president trump is taking to twitter to share his frustration of details included in a redacted report that was released to the public. he is calling the special counsel highly conflicted. he's also lashing out at aides who gave statements to mueller's

team. mr. trump used an expletive to describe portions of the report and says the investigation itself should never have been authorized. following the public release of the mueller report, counselor to the president, kellyanne conway and house intelligence chairman adam schiff are on this week. you can watch the full interviews right here at 8:00 on abc 7. a woman is caught on security cameras throwing seven newborn puppies in a garbage heap. this is video in coachella. the woman drops up to the side and tosses the puppies inside. she drives away. later a good samaritan spots the puppies and brings them inside the store where they were taken from animal services. the puppies were about three days old and believed to be terrier mixes. the woman could face animal cruelty charges if caught. also in southern california,

riverside police caught one of the hottest marijuana farms ever in the community. they raided the property the size of a city block. they found 40,000 marijuana plants growing inside a large greenhouse. its estimated street value, $20 million. no arrests have been made. a neighbor said the land was sold six months ago and the new owner put up a fence. then the strong permanent odor started coming from it. he assumed police would have been alerted to the grove site by the smell. back here at home, we can expect a new street closure in downtown san francisco due to repairs being made to the transit center. a section of fremont street will be closed overnight from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for a month so crews can remove construction materials. the closure began last night. this will include a one-block stretch of fremont between howard and mission. it will be closed in september. a repair date is supposed to be

builds, we'll be looking at stable atmosphere. berkeley, good morning to you. low 50s in oakland, 38 in mountain view. it's going to be lots of sunshine for everyone, in fact, all week long. today's temperatures will be above average, if you can believe that. north bay and south bay should see about 70 for this time of year. we'll be in the upper 70s san jose and concord, but then we'll be looking at temperatures 10 to 15 degrees warmer than that by the middle of the week. it will be cooler by the weekend. a little bit of an abrupt bump that are near average along the coast. near 70s tomorrow. we're already at above average so it won't take much to get into the 80s. with all these 80s inland. check out the reds getting closer to the bay, and then into wednesday, this could be the

hottest day of the week where san francisco will see highs in the 70s. even the coast perhaps from pacifica to half moon bay, those typically cool and breezy spots, could hit 70 degrees. today, though, typically cool from ocean beach to half moon bay. low 60s there. 62 bodega bay, and that natural air conditioner mother nature bringing in a 20-mile-an-hour wind with a sea breeze today. upper 70s toward antioch, 77 in napa. look for 65 downtown, and over into the east bay around el cerrito. the coolest day of the week on either end as we warm up today, and in the middle of the week, we'll be looking at temperatures on the hot side. download our accuweather app. we've got upper 70s inland, 70 around the bay, 60s coastside.
