set off a controlled blast detonating a suspicious van. multiple arrests were made overnight. >> they've also named the group behind the massacre which cast such a dark cloud over easter sunday. one image from the aftermath, that statue of jesus spattered in blood from one of the targeted churches. >> this morning security is ramped up here at home. the u.s. embassy issuing an alert as authorities warn more attacks could be possible in sri lanka. >> this as the death toll climbs. at least 290 people were killed including two americans and more than 500 injured. a domestic terror group is now being blamed. our foreign correspondent james longman is there on the scene starting us off with the very latest. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, robin. i'm at st. anthony's church where one of those suicide attackers struck. just a few moments ago as you where are just -- were just

saying, a massive blast went off down the road behind me, about 150 yards. people didn't know it was a controlled explosion and they went screaming in panic. this is one of three churches that has been hit. three international hotels, something like 300 people killed. over 500 injured and we know among the dead there are american citizens. this is as the government here admits they were warned about a possible attack. the moment terror strikes, sri lanka's easter weekend ripped part by violence. multiple suicide bombers targeting churches and hotels. leaving 290 people dead, more than 500 injured. some of those killed too deformed to identify. dozens of suspects held by police, but no claim of responsibility so far emerged. the latest arrest, a driver thought to have transported the killers.

draped over the pews, scrambling to help one another through the glass and debris. while at st. anthony's shrine, a blood splashed statue of jesus, a bleak reminder of what was to me. one of the bombers waited patiently in line at a breakfast buffet before setting off a device. hours later, more detonations including one during a police raid at a guest house where t e three officers were killed. and at night fall, an ied near the busiest airport. that device detonated by police. now the government have blamed a little known local terror group. they have not yet claimed responsibility. the government has said that they must have had help from an international network because such was the level of sophistication of this attack. still not very many answers here, but plenty of confusion,

cecilia. >> so much devastation. thank you, james. back here at home at churches around the country, we're seeing increased security a direct response of those attacks in sri lanka. our chief foreign correspondent of affairs tom llamas is here at st. patrick's cathedral here with the details. good morning, tom. >> reporter: cecilia, good morning to you. there is no mistaking the presence of police outside of landmarks like st. patrick's cathedral in manhattan. you can see police cruisers right at the entrances. and this as yesterday, parishioners came here at st. patrick's, following the attacks in sri lanka, seeing nypd police officers in full tactical gear. their arms on their weapons. police here making sure they were taking no chances. in sri lanka, both christians and tourists were targeted. just last week you'll remember a man tried to get in with two gas canisters and lighter fluid. police tell us they believe that man was likely mentally disturbed. you'll remember a man tried to get into st. patrick's with two gas cans and lighter fluid. he was likely disturbed.

as far as the attacks in sri lanka are concerned, there is no credible threat in the u.s. right now. but police both in new york and los angeles have stepped up patrols and we know police officers have been briefed on those terror bombings, cecilia. >> we can see those officers behind you there, tom. this enhanced security that you're seeing there, not just for the easter weekend? >> reporter: that's right. both police at the local, the state and federal level have all been briefed on this. you have to remember, we're still in an ongoing holiday religious ceremony season. passover is still ongoing, ramadan starts in may. we're told that terrorists target these gatherings because of the large number of people. police say, if you see something, say something. cecelia? >> a good reminder. tom llamas, thank you. >> sign of the times, security at churches. we're moving to the white house where president trump is both attacking the mueller report and claiming it exonerates him as democrats debate whether to impeach the president based on the evidence of obstruction of justice compiled by the special counsel. abc's terry moran has the latest.

good morning, terry. >> good morning. president trump is fighting back, saying there's no grounds, despite the mueller report. secondly because he's saying it's politically advantageous for him. with polls showing even among democrats support for impeachment is waning and democratic leaders are starting to back away from the issue. >> happy easter, everybody. have a good day. a lot of great things happening for our country. >> reporter: president trump was all smiles with his wife melania and daughter tiffany. but he returned to washington with the threat of impeachment on his mind. writing on twitter how do you impeach a republican president for a crime committed by democrats? that's a reference to trump's claim that the initiation of the russia investigation itself was a crime. his tweet was the latest in a string of more than a dozen this weekend. the president fuming about the

mueller report. the special counsel found no evidence of conspiracy between russia and the campaign. but his report does detail 11 instances when the president may have obstructed justice. and it does not exonerate the president on that issue. though attorney general barr decided the evidence was insufficient to charge trump with a crime. some of the president's democratic challengers now calling for impeachment proceedings to begin. >> this is about principle and that's why i've asked the house to start impeachment proceedings. >> i'm pretty sure he deserves to be impeached. but congress will have to figure out procedurally what to do. >> i think it would be perfectly reasonable for congress to open up those proceedings. >> reporter: but democratic congress leaders are following house speaker's nancy pelosi's more cautious approach pushing to see the full unredacted report after testimony of mueller. >> if proven, some of this would be impeachable, yes. >> reporter: meanwhile, this stunning defense by rudy giuliani on the eagerness to get dirt on hillary clinton from the kremlin.

according to his parents, the boy disappeared from his bed on wednesday night but now police have shifted the investigation to this family's home. paula faris is here with those details. good morning, paula. >> reporter: good morning, robin. good morning, everyone. authorities are now calling the family's home a crime scene as search dogs only picked up the missing boy's scent only inside the residence. the mother of this missing 5-year-old emotional, pleading for her son's safe return. >> i just want my kids. that's all i -- that's my life are my kids. >> reporter: according to his parents, a.j. freund was last seen around 9:00 wednesday night when he went to bed in their home in this chicago suburbs. the next morning, they say he was gone. >> a.j., please come home, we love you very much. >> reporter: a frantic search ensued. over the weekend, canines were dispatched to search the neighborhood, authorities even scanning nearby crystal lake using sonar. but illinois police and the fbi now say they do not believe a.j. was abducted or ran away.

and now they're calling this home a crime scene. the parents telling abc station wls they have no idea where their son is. >> i have no control over what people think. i just want my son to come home okay. >> reporter: a.j.'s parents have previously been investigated for neglect. as an infant, a.j. was put into foster care for a year and a half before being returned to his parents in 2015. the attorney for a.j.'s mother said she stopped talking to police. >> i realized that the police consider her to be a suspect. i advised miss cunningham to remain silent at that point. >> reporter: meantime, a.j.'s father insisting he's still cooperating with authorities. >> i spent hours with them yesterday. >> now, a.j. does have a younger brother who has now been taken

into protective custody by the illinois department of family services. the mom is 7 months' pregnant. per her lawyer she's going to do anything to find a.j. she willingly subjected herself to a complete body search over the weekend. she maintains her innocence but neither parent has been named a formal suspect yet. >> thank you. there are new concerns about boeing jets this time involving a 787 dreamliner. a "the new york times" report takes up claims of production of one of its plants. the stock is under pressure right now. david kerley is tracking the fallout. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, george. boeing reports earnings tomorrow but "the new york times" raising serious quality concerns about its relatively new plant in south carolina. this morning, "the new york times" in its reporting, claiming the speed of production appears to be valued more than quality at boeing's south carolina plant. as a result, the "times" reports that culture led to faulty parts being installed in planes. tools and metal shavings left inside near electrical systems and a loose bolt in an engine in one test flight.

a boeing technician is so concerned about production he told the "times," quote, i told my wife that i never plan to fly on it. >> we know about a ladder in the tail of a plane that likewise went up for a test flight. another safety risk. we heard about chewing gum being found holding together the trim of a door in a plane that was being prepared for delivery. again, that's an allegation that's being investigated by the faa. >> reporter: the "times" raises the question whether this report along with the issue on the 737 max, which is still grounded after two crashes, suggests boeing is trying to produce too many aircraft too quickly. boeing was quick to respond. the head of the south carolina plant calling the allegations of poor quality, quote, especially offensive. quality is the bedrock of who we are. the 787 was grounded for a time when it first entered service and there were two serious

battery fires in the cargo holds. the wide body is considered a safe jet liner and there's never been a crash of a dream liner. boeing said it invited "the new york times" to come to the south carolina plant and take a look. it says, the company, that the "times" declined that offer, george. >> boeing is pushing back but there have been questions raised about this production facility before. >> reporter: there have been. that's why boeing says these are old stories and rumors put to rest in the past. now, this is a nonunion shop in south carolina. most of boeing's other plants are union. that's caused some friction within the company. george? >> david kerley, thanks. cecelia? we're going to turn to new developments in the high profile murder case in indiana. two teenage girls killed in the woods, but a suspect was never found. now today, police are planning on announcing a, quote, new direction in the investigation. abc's alex perez is live in delphi, indiana with the latest. good morning, alex.

>> reporter: good morning, cecilia. this trail is one of the last places the girls were seen alive. this case has puzzled this community and they are ready for some answers. it was back in february of 2017 when 13-year-old abby williams and 14-year-old libby german were found murdered near a hiking trail they had earlier visited here in delphi. libby may have been trying to help police. on her phone, investigators found a photo of a man they believe could be their killer. authorities were able to develop this sketch. and libby also recorded her attacker's voice. police at the time released this chilling short clip. >> down the hill. down the hill. >> reporter: now, since then, police have investigated thousands of tips, but so far no arrests have been made. cecelia? >> yeah, alex, investigators are now saying that there's this new direction in the case. any idea what they're planning to announce today? >> reporter: yeah, that's the question. so many people here would like to have answered, but investigators at this point are

we're following right now. the death toll is climbing in that deadly attack in sri lanka. nearly 300 people were killed, more than 500 injured in multiple attacks on sunday. authorities have identified the domestic terror group they believe is behind it. this morning, some democrats are debating whether to impeach president trump based on the special counsel's evidence of obstruction of justice. the president is fighting back, but he's also busy this morning with another washington tradition there, the traditional white house easter egg roll that's kicking off. take a look at this amazing rescue in philadelphia. good samaritans jumping into the water to save a woman from her drowning suv. a boat that happened to be rowing nearby ultimately registratirescued the driver and one of them said, quote, literally as she got out the car went under water. >> they had a big crew right there. >> yes, exactly. we're going to turn to the dangers of commuter trains. newly released surveillance video shows a woman getting

dragged away as her hand was stuck in the door. thankfully, she survived. others have not. abc's gio benitez has the latest on these incidents. gio, good morning. >> reporter: hey there, george, yes, that woman in san francisco is thankfully okay this morning. approaching the train can be dangerous, in fact this weekend, a woman lost her life. over the weekend, tragedy at one of new york's busiest subway stations. a 21-year-old woman killed after reportedly becoming caught between the platform and the train. the south carolina native pulled onto the tracks. the mta is now investigating. but the accident is just a string of terrifying moments. in san francisco, a woman miraculously survived after being pulled under a train. take a look at this surveillance video obtained exclusively by "the san francisco examiner." one woman is trying to board a muni train in san francisco but when she reaches her hand into

the closing doorway, it gets stuck. an employee is trying to speak with her. the train pulls away, dragging her about 15 feet until she's sucked under disappearing on the tracks. >> she was running trying to keep up with it. people were banging on the car, shouting stop, stop. >> reporter: witnesses say the woman was rushed to the hospital where she stayed for five days treated for fractures, abrasions and contusions. lucky to be alive, she's now been discharged. >> in this case, it appears, the door had less than half an inch to close and in the last millisecond the person reached for the door to try and pry it open and that's when her finger got stuck. >> reporter: the transportation authority tells abc that the trains have been safely used in various models for many years. the dangers on subway platforms becoming a serious issue. in massachusetts, a woman fell exiting the train leaving her leg caught in between the train car and platform. a small group of fellow commuters jumping in to push the car off of her saving her life.

>> we all push. it creates a little bit of a space to pick her up and get her out of there. >> reporter: and in denver, a man is lucky to be alive after falling on the track and getting trapped between the platform and the other ledge of the light rail in 2017. the conductor not knowing what happened leaves the station dragging the man along until it appears he hit a wheelchair ramp, freeing his body. while badly hurt, he survived. so what should you do to stay safe? here in new york city, we're told to not try to hold the doors open. they don't work like elevator doors. they're not going to reopen automatically. just make sure your clothes and bags are clear of the door because they will get caught. guys back to you. >> great advice, that's right. now to the mysterious disappearance of a young mother

in texas. last seen at this surveillance video at her dallas complex. this was on wednesday. her abandoned jeep was found a day later. marcus moore is there in texas and has the details for us. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: good morning, i'm outside the apartment building where 26-year-old prisma reyes was last seen, and the street behind me is where investigators found her jeep abandoned. that is a critical clue to find this missing mom. this security video is the last piece of evidence they have as the search for reyes intensifies. >> i want to know where my sister is at. >> reporter: five days have passed since reyes was reported missing after two hours late to pick up her child from the babysitter. her mother says this isn't like her and it has never happened before. and her tearful stepfather said she would never leave her son. >> her son, he needs her. he needs to have his mother. >> reporter: one day after her disappearance, police recovered reyes' jeep from the same apartment complex.

and say they've spoken to the person on the other end of reyes phone call. >> i seen that video, it made me break down. it made me just bawl, you know. knowing that that's the last thing i could see from her. >> reporter: mesquite, texas police says reyes seems to be behaving normally. >> she's just talking on the phone. she does not appear to be under duress. >> reporter: but her stepfather says he's concerned this video may just show the opposite. >> the way she was flaundering her arm, that's just a trait that she has. >> it's unusual for anyone to abandon a vehicle, but really to not pick up their child when they were supposed to, that's our biggest concern is why she didn't pick her child up and is she safe. >> reporter: that surveillance video is critical. we still don't know what evidence police are able to gather from her car. we do know, however, calls from her cell phone have gone unanswered. this morning, her family and police are desperate to find her. guys. >> certainly hope she's okay. marcus, thank you. coming up, the zoo official

>> reporter: cecilia, good morning to you. just a truly remarkable story. picture this for a moment. just a couple minutes after the park opened, there was a small group of visitors who actually saw this tiger attack happened. they were shocked but they sprang into action, grabbed the elephant keeper without flinching came over here to save their friend and colleague. >> we have staff getting attacked by a tiger. >> reporter: this morning, a zookeeper is in intensive care recovering after being attacked by a tiger. >> advised staff is still in the enclosure. the tiger is still next to them still attacking. >> reporter: sanjiv, a 275-pound sumatran tiger was here when he pounced on the female employee. a small group of visitors to the zoo saw the incident and alerted workers nearby. employees used food to lure the animal into a different space. >> our staff response saved the keeper's life. saved the tiger's life. and it truly is a miracle what

happened. it could have been so much worse. >> reporter: zoo officials have launched a full investigation saying there were no mechanical errors with the tiger's habitat. is there any reason that a person should be in the same space as one of these animals? >> no. there's no reason for a staff person and the animal to share the same space. >> reporter: this webcam video caught the caretaker shortly before the incident. the victim with the zoo for 17 years suffered lacerations and puncture wounds to her upper body. she's being described by the zoo's director as being meticulous and driven. >> this zookeeper and this tiger are both valuable parts of this family. both very much of about who we are and what we do. >> reporter: this just the latest in a string of disturbing incidents involving animals in captivity. >> we have a lion attack. >> reporter: earlier this year, a lion killed 22-year-old alex black, an intern working at an animal conservation center in north carolina. according to reports, a large

play ball blocked the gate and prevented the door from closing. the zoo says they will not euthanize sanjiv, an endangered species that recently fathered four cubs. cecilia? >> okay, zachary. thank you. let's bring in ron from miami. ron, this investigation is under way. what are the first questions that investigators are looking to get answered here? >> well, it's like the director said. there's no reason why a keeper or any staff member should be in the same space as an alert adult tiger. as an accredited facility, there's nothing that would allow that. that's the first thing they'll be looking into as to why they're in the same space and why. >> let's stay on that. do you have any sense of why the zookeeper would need to be in that enclosure? why -- she was very experienced, they say. >> i can tell you, cecilia, from personal experience, about 25 years ago, a keeper i worked with, a good friend of mine was killed by a tiger at our zoo. this is an experienced person.

the only way i can explain this, cecilia, sometimes your mind is not there. you're not paying attention. i don't know if you remember driving home, you get into your driveway and you don't remember getting home. when you do a routine day after day, you do the same routine, you know, at the end of the day, it resulted with human error. and it's hard to protect against human error. the only thing i could think maybe she assumed she had already put the tiger in. or the day before, it was secured the day before. there's no way of knowing. thankfully, she survived, she'll be able to explain those things. >> thankfully, those other zoo keepers were able to jump in and help her out. we also heard in zachary's story this other attack that happened in north carolina. is this just coincidence, or are we hearing about these attacks more frequently? >> i want to think it's a coincidence. it's tragic. it's horrific that it's happening. but keep in mind, you know, zoos, especially across the country, more people go to zoos than all of the nfl, nba,

book, "cribsheet," emily oster is contradicting the most controversial myths about parenthood. can crunching the numbers make you a better parent, emily oster says it just might. >> this book is about combining the data and decisionmaking tools. >> when you were studying this, and looking at the data, was there anything that really surprised you? >> for many years, people have been giving me advice not to give their children allergens like peanuts early on, but we learned that you should give your kids peanuts and others when very small. that's in order to prevent allergies. >> reporter: breast-feeding exclusively for at least six months is strongly recommended by every medical organization and is proven to give benefits to the baby and mother. the medical community says that the breast is best, what do you say? >> i think the breast is great if that works for you.

i think we should help women support women who want to breast-feed. >> reporter: but according to oster, the data is not clear for long-term health or cognitive benefits of breast-feeding your child. a finding that says oster may alleviate some of the struggle or guilt for those moms unable or choose not to nurse. >> you can certainly find studies that show that kids breast-fed have higher iqs than those who do not. >> here's one that i personally grappled with for a while. do you let your baby, your infant, cry themselves to sleep? >> i think that often there is a concern raised that letting your kid cry out will cause some long-term damage. the evidence does not support those kind of negative impacts. >> reporter: experts agree that as long as the child's basic needs are met, teaching your child to self-soothe can be good for the parent and baby's sleep. and for those questions the benefits of staying at home to

sons, tre, michael and joshua. good morning. how are you doing, jamil? >> i'm doing great. i did a year of chemotherapy. as i mentioned, i worked through chemotherapy the whole time. now my tumors spread around my body have shrunk to microscopic size. >> i know you're checking every three months? >> every three months, i get a scan. i got my latest scan april 15th, and it's still clear. >> we love to hear that. we saw your story first of all in "people" magazine. and the number of people who have reached out. there was one who said your consistent cheerful messages and check-ins became a vital part of my day, helping remind me that i am indeed entitled to be cheerful. this is somebody that's walking a journey like you are. how do you maintain that positive outlook? >> i think when i'm feeling down, i think about my family.

i hear munchkin voices saying "i loveou, mommy." that continues to push me forward. and i think being involved and having my community of girlfriends as i look at them and we're all going through the same thing supporting each other, it just makes me hopeful that we're going live a long time with this. >> you have a lot of reasons to do it right here on this couch. ricky,ou've had your own journey, not once, but twice? >> twice, yeah. >> how are you doing? >> i'm doing good. i was diagnosed with kidney chancer in february. i recently had a surgery which removed the tumor on my left kidney. i'm good with that. prior to that, i had colon cancer. stage one colon cancer. had a collectmy, no more signs of cancer. there wasn't my own struggle. when i was 18 i was diagnosed with psg. a liver degrees.

for ten years i was asymptomatic. no repercussions. no signs of it, but around when i was 28 years old, everything kind of came to a head real quick within a year, and i was on a transplant list and i was truch -- pretty much dying. i got a liver transplant. from that, i was all right. >> you guys are just warriors. warriors. all right, big brother. i like that 'stache coming in really nice there. i like that look. what does it mean to you and your brothers to have this kind of strength from your mother and father? >> just looking at them and seeing everything they've been through just shows how strong they are. determined just helpful to everyone else going through it. just forthgoing with everything they're doing. just appreciate it. >> i'm sure you that do.

i'm sure that you do. you have a message, jamil. not all cancers are the same. not all breast cancers are not the same. and you have a message you want people to hear? >> yes, i think we've got a stable complacency that the work is done because the survival is better. metastatic cancer, only 5% of research has gone to stage 4 breast cancer which is abysmal. and metastatic patients are dying at the same rate as victims of the opioid crisis and gun violence. we need attention to not have metastatic breast cancer have an isolation. if you're serious about saving lives, you have to focus on metastatic breast cancer patients. >> thank you for that. what's your name? >> joshua. >> what's your name? >> michael. >> michael, what do you think of mommy and daddy. >> i love them so much. they take care of me and my brother. >> you know, you all -- what is your message for somebody who is walking this right now, who is sitting at home, who may not have the support that you have here? what do you tell them and how do you help lift them up? >> you do not have to go through this alone. there are so many organizations and people out there that will support you. i know i'm even on facebook and twitter. you can reach out to me if you just need somebody to pull you through. we can push forward together. there's strength in numbers. and people that are not living with this. know your risk. especially black women. this is not even on our radar these days. you hear about diabetes and high blood pressure. know your history. know your risk. >> that's it. thank you all very much. we're going to be right back. motivational monday. thank you for that. motivational monday.

[ applause ] back now on "gma." it is national infertility awareness week. we have a new series "broke for baby" looking at what it takes to have a child. over 6 million women in the u.s. struggle with infertility. some are here with us this morning. there are some misconceptions about conception. dr. jen ashton is here to set the record straight. >> good morning. >> you've been an ob/gyn for years. there's to much misinformation out there. there's so many myths. let's bust some of these. audience raise your hand if you think this is true. years of being on birth control can make you less fertile. >> got some hands up. >> so, janai, this is so common. i hear this all the time from woman. this is what i tell them, your ovaries are like puppies. you know when you go out and

you're gone for ten minutes and your puppy treats you the same way asf you were gone for ten years. that's the way your ovaries are. you absolutely can get pregnant right away. your body doesn't need any time to getting used to getting back on it. we're going in order here. were you on the pill before you got pregnant? >> i was. >> a long time? >> yes. i won't say the age, but yes. it's like breaking a habit that you've had for a very long time. >> you said you were nervous when you got off the pill? >> i was nervous. you're preventing something for so long, all of a sudden, you stop preventing and you think it will happen so quickly. >> that falls under my category where we grow up most of our adult lives generally not wanting to get

when you want to get pregnant, you're like, why is this so hard? >> multiple rounds of ivf will increase my chance of getting pregnant. who thinks this is true? >> this is true, you guys. here's the thing for the average couple the average ivf success rate is around 30%. there was a study that shows if couples go through enough cycles, almost all of them can have a successful pregnancy. but when i say enough, five, six, seven cycles, we're going to go down the line. you have your own story, right? you did a few? >> yes, i did seven cycles. >> seven. >> seven. >> and then? >> well, i got pregnant on my seventh cycle. >> listen, it's a lot of time. it's a lot of money. it's a lot of physical and emotional ups and downs, but there can be success at the end. >> okay. here's the next one, if i'm under 30, i won't have fertility issues? who thinks this is true? you think if you're younger

there won't be a problem. >> our audience is with it. here's the thing, it's not exactly true. i'll give that one a false. age is a factor, it's a major factor for fertility on the woman's side. but it's not the only factor so we can see women under the age of 30 who have fertility issues. and we can see women over the age of 40 who don't. again, it's a very complicated picture. you're next. >> i was 28 when i went through it, and it was really difficult because my friends either weren't having issues or they weren't yet ready to sarttart a family. to a point where i started sharing my journey on social media in order to connect with people going through this at a younger age. >> i think the key thing -- we should actually rename the week to national fertility awareness week, instead of infertility. >> yes. >> yes, thank you. because this is really an issue that affects not just the woman, but the man. it's your perspective, are you standing from the inside or the outside looking in.

report says there's plenty of evidence on obstruction of justice. >> well, there is that, yes. >> now do you believe the president obstructed, do you? >> from what i've seen, i believe he did. that's why it's clear and we also have to have robert mueller to testify before congress. it's time for us to testify in congress. i think we should be doing it for a while, to have this debate. to getting it out in public and having this discussion with the american people about whether or not the president committed crimes. >> president trump is going to tell those voters that democrats are offering socialism. >> well, i'm not a socialist. i'm a democrat. and i want to make that clear. maybe that's a differentiator in the race. we talk a lot about health care for example. i think i'm the only candidate who actually gets gets gets health care. i think health care is a right. i think everybody in america should have access to good affordable health care. i made a choice to getting my own independent health care at the va. it's not perfect. if i'm elected, i'm not going to force you off your private health care plan. >> good luck on the trail. thanks for coming in this morning. seth moulton, the 19th candidate.
