their palo alto blood testing company. the case is facing more delays. >> reporter: elizabeth holmes and her attorneys arrived to the courthouse hoping to buy more time to mount a defense. standing before u.s. district court judge prosecutors want ad trial date to be set because scheduling a trial set to last two months could be difficult. however they said they need more time to review millions of pages of documents. there are 20 million pages of evident in this case and that number could grow because the judge did extend the period of time in which evidence could be reduced. in this digital era, hopefully most documents are now electronic. defense attorneys said they were having difficulty lining up

billionaire witnesses for depositions. all parties will return to court on july 1 to see if an agreement can be reached for a trial date. it's possible the trial may not happen until next year. they are facing 11 criminal counts of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. at one point she made him wealthy. she and her attorneys weren silent. they will return to court on june 10. in san jose, david louis, abc 7 news. what you are seeing in this video could have turned into a nightmare. vacaville police released the surveillance video which shows a girl trying to hide from a suspicious driver who approached her while she was walking home. police have a discription of the

man. lyanne melendez is in vacaville with the latest. why did it take so long to release this video? respect in gnat video you will see that they are trying to hide her face and that process took some time. they also took time gathering information and also interviewing the little girl. f this vacaville neighborhood is very kid friendly. families here say they have always felt safe. that's why people were surprised to watch this surveillance video of a young girl being followed in broad day light by a green or gray pontiac. >> she is concerned at this point that this adult is trying to contact her and trying to engage in conversation and she acts very appropriately. >> reporter: police say the man described as a black male in his 20s with dread locks had been following her for several blocks. she hid behind this blue truck and waited, but then the man turned around and tried to approach her one more time.

police are urging parents to keep an eye. i'm live in vacaville. >> good advice. thank you so much. in the east bay, a man tried to rob two pizza shops over the weekend. in both cases, the employees kicked the man out. now concord police investigators are looking for him. abc 7 news reporter is live with the story tonight. >> reporter: this is the second pizza shop the suspect targeted in one night. >> reporter: two pizza shops and one alleged suspect. >> the employee did not give him the money and the subject ran outside of the business. >> reporter: round table pizza targeted around 9:30 p.m. on saturday. a couple minutes later it happened again down the block.

>> i received a similar call again of a subject trying to steal money from the register and again he used a knife. >> reporter: this time around the alleged suspect found two employees who are ready to confront him. >> a couple of employees were closing up and they come from behi behind. >> reporter: covering his face and pointing the knife the alleged suspect demanded the money. >> he had a broom. if anything he -- our co workers were creeped out. the knife was like really close to her. >> reporter: the alleged thief realized he was surrounded. >> i was like i'm going to call the cops and then when i said that he kind of started walking backwards. >> reporter: police believe the suspect to be in his 20s, wearing a green sweatshirt and dark colored pant pant

the assembly transportation committee will consider the plan during the hearing that is underway. the plan would allow san francisco to charge a five

dollar toll and create a reservation system for cars. soon you won't have to bring cash or a check book to the dmv. the agency expects to accept check cards. a major motivator for the change is to speed up wait times. the task force wants an additional $250 million from the state to help expedite service. >> our budget request will ensure we keep wait under an hour. >> the dmv says traffic is expected to double in field offices statewide mostly because of real i.d. card applications. tonight a new plan of attack to solve an old problem, illegal dumping in oakland.

it's a topic we keep following because abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area. oakland has been fighting this issue for quite sometime. >> this is a horrible pr mayor talking last may. she promised to hire three litter enforcement officers to combat the city's rampant litter and dumping problems. >> we deserve a service from the city of oakland to have a clean, safe city. >> it was just a few months prior in march of 2018 that city councilman joined a group of east oakland residents to protest the illegal dumping and unsanitary conditions in their neighborhoods. >> once the trash sits there, it gets worse and it attracts more dumping. >> that was kocouncil member saying she wanted the city to save 2 million dollars to hire two crews and equipment to clean illegal dumping hot spots.

oakland officials confirmed they hired four litter enforcement officers in the past year, but they are still in training and not yet out on the street. and the city says calls to the city's oak 311 call line related to illegal dumping are now increasing. more people are aware that is there. laura anthony looks at the latest effort now to clean up oakland. >> reporter: what a difference two hours can make and about a dozen volunteers on this stretch of g street in east oakland. one plagued by chronic illegal o aheed by aeiount ey of and the natio with sheriff's department. >> they will be doing random patrols 24 hours a day, 7 day as week. it will be random, nobody will know. >> you will be prosecuted

because you are dumping contaminated things on our streets need to be prosecuted. >> reporter: the pilot will also include neighborhood surveys to find out more about where all the dumping is coming from. greater enforcement of laws that already exist and video surveillance of certain trouble spots. much of the hands on work will be done by a contingent by a group called men of valor. >> they see it. they know this area well. and they take pride in rendering a service back to the city of oakland. >> reporter: of course, what everyone knows especially the folks who live in oakland, for every illegal dumping trouble spot like this one, there are hundreds more just like it. every few months it seems city and county leaders promise to get tougher with those who dump and more proactive about cleaning it up. it seems the problem keeps getting worse. >> i just want to say to the people that dump, take it to the dump so we won't have to come

a bit of a sea breeze has kicked into the city and knocked temperature down to 62 degrees. a live look just soaked in sunshine not only over san francisco but the entire area. the forecast headline calls for heating up even more tomorrow especially inland where we will likely see 90 degree readings. you are not escaping the warmth tomorrow. then by wednesday we'll first feel cooling along our beach and then area wide cooling by the end of the week. overnight tonight it will be a warm spring night on the way. we are dropping into the 50s across the board under plenty of stars. that allows us the chance to see the lyrid meteor shower peaking tonight. about a dozen meteors wick cross our evening sky. the best time to see that is early in the morning before predawn hours. the problem is we have a very bright moon in the sky. try to look away from the moon if you are trying to see

here is a live look at san francisco international airport which wants to achieve carbon neutrality and zero waste. the airport announced it is buying six electric buses, passengers will see them by the end of the year. san francisco ride sharing company lyft is out the environment today. the proceeds will go towards planting trees in paradise which was devastated by last year's wildfire, the camp fire. lyft is working with a group called one tree planted.

time biden has tried for the white house. as we celebrate earth day today an environmental crisis is looming. statistics show tons more waste going into land fills. >> each bay area community is figuring out how to reverse this unexpected trend or really is it even possible? >> 7 on your side's michael finney is here with how you can help. >> everything was going so well. i think we thought we know what we are doing. now we don't think that way. california's goal is to convert 75% of waste. the amount of trash going to land fills was dropping every year. now it is inching back again. and the state agency attributes most of the increase to the booming economy. we have more construction debris. to top it off, china stopped buying most of our recycleable materials. now each city is coming up with solutions and many are choosing to crack down on you and me.

not long ago this waste was easily recycled. much was sent to china and forgotten. >> china got fed up with getting stuff that was not really worth recycling. >> reporter: he says garbage companies got stuck with it instead. >> we're not getting paid anymore for the recycling. we are paying to get rid of the recycling. >> reporter: the company put much of the blame on contamination on our recycle bins. plastics that actually are not recycleable or plain old garbage dumped in the wrong place. >> i feel like i'm careful just cans and bottles. >> reporter: residents rur stunned when their garbage company began ticketing them for recycling wrong. a fine of nearly $28 for each

violation. other cities tag carts for contaminati contamination, too, but they issue warnings before fines. in oakland, california waste solutions issued a huge number, 33,000 of these notices last year. violators first receive a letter with a photo of the offending item. they can be fined after three violations. however, of those 33,000 citations, officials said not one person received any fine last year. >> don't put goopy, wet, don't put food. let's keep the blue bin clean. >> reporter: phil boboput out a plea to residents to better sort their trash. he says garbage company green waste leaves dozens of these tags on recycle carts every week. >> and then they get a phone call that says you may have noticed your garbage didn't get picked up or your blue bin didn't get picked up.

>> reporter: if contamination is massive the cart is left behind. the customer can either clean the bin or have it dumped as garbage for a $30 fee. middle valley has a different idea. he wants to have customers stop mixing all recycleables into one cart. >> the food squishes out and mixes with other materials in the recycling can and contaminates everything. >> reporter: he tested a dual stream program when customers separate the material. a few customers in the trial program didn't like it. >> it is more work on the homeowner. >> reporter: now jim's asking the rest of the customers if they are willing to separate their trash. public hearings on the dual stream proposal will begin next month. palo alto officials are requiring the trash collector to trace where the recycled

the new building would replace the davidson office building at 255 west julian near the ramps to route 87. the new office building would range in size from 600 to 70 o,000 square feet much bigger than the six story building that stands there now. it's one of the first buildings proposed after the san jose city council proposed new building height a proposal would require large commercial buildings to use 100% renewable electricity. the ordinance would only effect buildings larger than 150 square feet. dignity health already made the switch. >> our hospitals avoid more than 2 million pounds of carbon dioxide. that's the equivalent of about

the great pacific garbage patch, and dead whales whose stomachs were filled with plastics. these are some problems unrecycled plastics cause in the ocean. >> some east bay children want to help by getting rid of disposable plastic utensils in their cafeteria. >> reporter: things like whales washed ashore and plastic pollution have long disturbed this fifth grader especially when he looked in the trash cans at lunch time. he thought what if thousands even millions of plastic forks, knives and spoons used in schools could be replaced with old fashioned cutlery. >> a ton of it was plastic utensils. i was like this isn't right. >> so what did you do?

>> i first talked to my principal and my science teacher. >> reporter: he teamed up with the pta president who oversees the lunch program. >> he really just was so passionate and gave such a compelling argument for why we needed to make this change for our school and for our environment that it was hard to say no. >> i had to type so many e-mails. >> reporter: a year later, 11-year-old julian's simple idea turned into reality here at burton valley elementary school in lafayette. >> we looked at calm postables and it was cost prohibitive. we ended up pricing out the metal utensils. we learned in the long run it was actually a cost savings. >> reporter: the school lunch provider agreed to make the switch and the school installed a new sink. if this onetensils a year
