congress following the release of special counsel robert mueller's report. the president telling "the post" complying with further investigations was not necessary saying there's no reason to go any further and especially in congress where it's very partisan, obviously very partisan. the house judiciary committee has subpoenaed former white house council don mcgahn calling him a critical witness about whether trump obstructed justice but trump said they should be satisfied with what they already told mueller. meanwhile the president's son-in-law and senior adviser jared kushner is downplaying russia's meddling in the 2016 election suggesting investigations into what happened have been more damaging than anything done by the russians. >> you look at, you know, what russia did, you know, buying some facebook ads to sow dissent and it's a terrible thing but i think the investigations and all the speculation that's happened the last two years has had a much harsher effect on our democracy than a couple of facebook ads.

>> reporter: but the mueller report found russia did a lot more than buy facebook ads and called the meddling sweeping and systemic spreading disinformation on social media along with the hacking of the dnc and hillary clinton's team. but kushner suggested the russian effort didn't amount to much. >> if you look at the magnitude of what they did and what they accomplished, i think the ensuing investigations have been way more harmful to our country. >> reporter: speaking at the same forum, hillary clinton says russia's actions were an attack on our democracy and the president is also asking his staff to boycott something else, this year's correspondents dinner. the white house says no staff will attend this week. last year comedian michelle wolf faced backlash after taking jabs at press secretary sarah sanders. >> i actually really like sarah. i think she's really resourceful. like she burns fact then she uses that ash to create a perfect smoky eye. >> in response to the white house staff not attending the correspondents dinner, the organization's president says, quote, we're looking forward to an enjoyable evening celebrating the first amendment.

former vice president joe biden is set to launch his third bid for the white house tomorrow. biden plans to make the announcement by video making him the 20th democrat to enter the 2020 race. he's leading the pack in the national polls but a new poll in new hampshire has him trailing bernie sanders by double digits. biden also has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to fund-raising. he's kicking off his campaign with no cash at all. now to the latest on the easter bombing attacks in sri lanka. the death toll now stands at at least 359. 45 children among the dead and at least 18 more suspects were arrested overnight. this morning there are new fears of bombs planted across the country. abc's elizabeth hur joins us now with more, good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: ken knit, good morning. authorities in sri lanka say they are working around the clock, and they hope to bring the situation under control within the next few days, but for now, the danger isn't over yet. sri lanka on high alert with government urging the public to remain vigilant with more attackers still out there.

little bit scared now. >> reporter: isis has claimed responsibility posting this picture of the men they say were the suicide bombers. the motive still under investigation, but sri lankan officials believe this was planned in retaliation for the two mosque attacks last month in new zealand where 50 worshippers were killed. here in the u.s., while officials maintain there is no credible threat, the fbi and the department of homeland security just issued a bulletin announcing they remain vigilant with a potential for copycat attacks. kenneth and mona. >> vigilance is key. elizabeth hur, thank you. breaking overnight a driver is under arrest after allegedly plowing into a crowd of pedestrians in california. eight people were injured. the youngest victim is 13 years old. police in the san jose suburbs say some of the injuries are serious. an officer on the scene says it appears the driver deliberately hit the pedestrians. witnesses say the driver was speeding and did not slow down. no word yet on a possible motive. video from the connecticut

police shooting of an unarmed couple appears to contradict the officers. police from two different new haven area departments responded. one said the driver made a threatening gesture, but the video shows him raising his hands. the man was not injured. the woman was wounded but is recovering. there have been protests over the shooting. officials say they released the video much faster than usual to show transparency in the investigation. a former pharmaceutical ceo is now the first executive to face criminal charges in the opioid crisis. laurence doud iii was led away by federal agents in new york city yesterday. prosecutors say doud and the company rochester drug cooperative provided drugs to pharmacies which in turn filled millions of unnecessary prescriptions for oxycontin and other controlled substances. >> in 2012 rdc sold 4.7 million oxycodone pills to pharmacies. by 2016, that number was

it wasn't a springtime santa trapped in a tulsa, oklahoma, chimney. firefighters pulled a suspected burglar to safety. he had been stuck there for nine hours. police think he got trapped overnight while trying to break into an auto center to steal copper. now to the potential sex abuse scandal brewing for the boy scouts. the group allegedly kept a confidential file on troop leaders who were abusive and volunteers. an attorney representing former scouts says the so-called perversion file is a database compiled by the group.

it documents allegations of child sex abuse by scout leaders going back to the 1940s. the attorney says the file showed more than 12,000 alleged instances of sexual abuse and the names of nearly 8,000 suspected pedophiles who may have been removed from the boy scouts but did not face any consequences. >> the data starts in 1944, and they've had this information and have not protected the children which they are to serve. they have protected the pedophiles among their ranks. >> the boy scouts of america says each of the instances was reported to law enforcement and tells abc news in a statement, quote, we care deeply about all victims of child sex abuse and sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed during their time in scouting. two more defendants in the college cheating scandal will take plea deals. one is a father accused of paying nearly half a million dollars to get his son and daughter into the university of southern california. the other is the former assistant women's soccer coach there who helped get his kids into usc for athletics.

both may have avoided -- both may avoid significant jail time in return for their cooperation. and the faa has given google's parent company the green light for drone deliveries. wing is the first drone delivery company to get faa approval in the u.s., and the company plans to start a trial delivery service in virginia later this year. companies like uber and u.p.s. are also trying to secure similar federal approvals for commercial drone deliveries. >> reporter: tennant who asked walton to write the foreword for her 2014 book she was giving a copy of her book to walton when he allegedly invited her to his hotel room and pinned her to the bed, quote, forcing kisses on her neck, face and chest. >> i immediately jumped up to leave the room, and he came around and grabbed me from behind and again held my arms down so i could not move. >> reporter: walton's attorney flatly denies the claim calling tennant, quote, an opportunist not a victim saying her claim is not credible. the date of the alleged encounter is unclear. police tell abc news the alleged assault was never reported to them. tennant was asked why she didn't come forward earlier. >> i was scared. when someone assaults you and you think you're going to be raped, coming forward is a scary thing. >> and walton parted ways with the lakers to coach the sacramento kings. both the warriors and the kings say they're looking into those allegations. in chicago crews are

searching for a missing boy using planes, boats and people on the ground. 5-year-old aj freund has been missing since last week. meanwhile, police have released records showing at least five years of problems at his home in crystal lake, illinois. they've responded to calls for everything from drugs to theft to traffic violations. officers also noted the filthy conditions and a suspicious bruise on the boy. turning now to an incredible story of survival in southern alabama. a woman rescued after spending five days trapped inside her car. robin fancher ran off the road last week and ended up pinned against the driver's side door. the car was covered by brush but someone eventually noticed it on monday and called police. her family had reported her missing fearing the worst. >> when she got to the hospital she had a broken hip, a broken femur. she had blood clots in her lungs. her sugar was over 600 and her kidneys were failing.

through sunnyvale avenue hitting people trying to cross in the crosswalk. witnesses say the driver continued driving, allegedly hitting a few more people before he finally crashed into a tree. police tell us the driver did not make any attempt to break or avoid the pedestrians. >> we do have witness statements that show the vehicle did not attempt to slow down or brake. >> there's no sign of braking. >> reporter: the driver was arrested on the scene. police are trying to determine. reporting live, abc 7 news. it is 4:30 right now on the dot.
