sister veronica, also adopted from russia. they have a special handshake and an amazing bond. for her science fair project, veronica built sarah an artificial hand so the two could play more together. >> the artificial hand i made out of molding clay so she could catch a ping-pong ball. >> any time i fail, i just keep doing it with veronica cheering on me. i could always get to the top. >> reporter: a message she shared with other kids after winning that handwriting award. >> i like to write by hand because i like to be challenged and overcome my challenges. >> reporter: so when you look back at this handwriting, now you can see it. there is nothing average about it. it's spectacular, just like sarah. >> i just try my hardest and put my mind to it, and this is what happens. >> spectacular sarah there. when you hear about cursive no longer being a requirement in some school districts, and the fact that she's doing it, and doing it very well, is so

the united states. >> everybody knows donald trump. >> reporter: biden, who is 76 years old, has spent half a century in politics and this is his third try for the white house. so he brings a long track record. and a flashpoint in that record now coming under sharp scrutiny as senate judiciary committee chairman presiding over the clarence thomas confirmation hearings, biden was widely criticized for the committee's treatment of anita hill. his campaign revealed he spoke to hill and expressed regret for what she endured. hill told "the new york times" that conversation happened earlier this month and she fired back saying, i cannot be satisfied by simply saying i'm sorry for what happened to you. i will be satisfied when i know there is real change and real accountability and real purpose. for joe biden, the challenges and opportunities in this campaign are just beginning. >> why are you the best candidate? >> that will be for you all to decide. >> reporter: president obama issued a statement saying he and his vice president for eight years share a special bond but

he didn't endorse biden, that's a presidential tradition. biden said he asked obama not to endorse him and said whoever wins this nomination must win it on their merits. terry moran, abc news, washington. >> our thanks to terry. no endorsement from the former president but he did get endorsements out of the gate from senator bob casey from pennsylvania where he was born in scranton, and chris coons of delaware, a senator from the first state. the endorsements are starting to trickle in for the former vp. >> joe biden will give his first interview to abc news on "the view." then joe and jill biden will sit down with robin roberts on "good morning america." nearly two years after the death of american student otto warmbier, sources say north korea had demanded $2 million in medical costs before his release. >> an american envoy reportedly signed an agreement to pay the money on instructions passed down from president trump. any payment would be widely considered ransom money, but it's not clear if the bill was ever paid.

warmbier had been sentenced to 15 years hard labor for allegedly trying to steal a propaganda poster. he died six days after he was flown back to the u.s. in a coma. the white house would only say they do not comment on hostage negotiations. the summit between north korean leader kim jong-un and russian president vladimir putin is over after they exchanged gifts and spent the day focused on denuclearization. putin accepted kim's invitation to visit north korea, and he says he will openly discuss details of their talks with the u.s. kim insists his country needs international security guarantees in order to end its nuclear program and accused the u.s. of acting in bad faith at the summit in hanoi. moving to weather, louisiana is under a state of emergency after a tornado tore across the northern part of the state killing two people and leaving a wide path of destruction. the system that produced tornados and flooding along the gulf coast is moving toward the carolinas bringing a new round of severe storms. the twister that hit the city of

ruston was at least an ef-3, meaning it packed winds of 165 miles an hour or higher. abc's marcus moore is there to show us the incredible scene. >> reporter: deadly tornados striking in the middle of the night. students at louisiana tech racing to wake each other up. >> oh my gosh. >> nick, get up! >> reporter: debris strewn across campus. the softball field in tatters. classes canceled. ruston, louisiana taking a direct hit from a massive twister with at least 136-mile-per-hour winds. ripping the roof off this motel 6. >> i couldn't move out of my bed, basically, it was that terrifying. >> look at this, stairs at this hotel that once led you to rooms, now you can see nothing but blue sky. falling trees slicing the city's homes in half and claiming the lives of a mother and her son. outside of jackson, mississippi, a tow truck driver killed in a two-vehicle crash on wet roads. his truck plunging off of a bridge. in new orleans, severe thunderstorms swamping streets and delaying the start of the

famed jazz and heritage festival. this tornado producing storms tracking across 150 miles, cutting a long swath of destruction. buildings shredded in bryan, texas. northeast of austin wednesday, this truck overturning, stuck in a ditch. good samaritans banding together, flipping that vehicle over. and freeing the young driver trapped inside. and a closer look at the hotel that took a direct hit when this storm came through. it was in the middle of the night while many people were in their rooms sleeping. they say it is a miracle that no one here was hurt. marcus moore, abc news, ruston, louisiana. hundreds of students and staffers at two los angeles universities have been quarantined because of a possible exposure to measles. a ucla student with measles may have exposed 500 people on campus and a person with measles visited a library on another campus, cal state l.a. possibly exposing hundreds of employees, some also students. the u.s. is facing a measles

epidemic with nearly 700 cases spread across 22 states. for nfl fans the season is already under way. round one of the draft kicked off last night in nashville. >> for the fourth time in five years, a quarterback went first overall. heisman trophy winner kyler murray is now an arizona cardinal. >> the most talked about pick but not in a good way was former duke quarterback daniel jones by the new york giants. the selection brought loud boos from fans watching in the rain at metlife stadium. >> and here's someone else who may not have been thrilled on draft day, kansas city chiefs quarterback patrick mahomes. mahomes has been selected for the cover of the madden nfl 20 video game. oh, no! >> oh-oh, yeah. >> we're saying oh no because we know that he led the league with 50 touchdown passes and was named mvp in just his second season. >> so he deserved it. but k.c. fans are worried about the madden cover jinx. >> oh, no. >> more than a dozen players who have appeared on the game have gotten hurt or seen their stats drop that year.

we're back with these michigan officers rushing to save a man trapped in a burning car. the driver was unconscious. at first they tried to break open a window but failed. finally they forced the driver's side door open and pulled the man to safety. he was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. the victim is under investigation for drunk driving. later today the ntsb and officials will be at the scene of a chemical leak that sickened dozens in a chicago suburb. >> local investigators won't say what caused the leak but a tractor was towing two large containers of ammonium when the leak occurred. alex perez reports. >> reporter: an investigation under way in the suburbs north

of chicago to determine what caused this tank to leak a hazardous chemical right near a residential area. the incident starting around 4:30 prompting a massive response from authorities. >> there is some type of ammonia smell here. >> reporter: a sergeant and deputy arriving on scene overcome, forced to retreat, quickly realizing the air wasn't safe. >> i do have three patients on the ground. >> reporter: 37 people hospitalized, seven in critical but stable condition, including one firefighter from the toxic cloud created by anhydrous ammonia used in farm fertilizer. >> the trailers holding the chemical leaked. this leak caused plumes of toxic acid to be released into the air. >> reporter: authorities at one point calling for residents to shelter in place. william hask overcome by the haze and smell. >> we couldn't see beyond the first step, it was that thick.

we got chocolate-covered pretzels this morning courtesy of two sisters, get this, they thought they were going to live their lives and careers and they had it all figured out. then they took a big risk. they dropped everything for the pretzel. >> abc's janine elliot has their story. >> reporter: it's the classic sweet and salty treat people love to indulge in. for sisters allie and lauren, something was missing. >> we googled everything about chocolate-covered pretzels. there was so much of the same out there. wait a sec, we can do this better. >> reporter: these sisters from long island, new york would have to sacrifice a lot. in 2012 lauren was a college senior on track to become an accountant. allie was working as a graphic designer. >> it was january of 2012 just before graduation that i called allie. i remember in the middle of the quad. we had been talking about fatty sundays and the idea behind it. i was like, i can't move forward, i need to see what happens, we need to see this

through. >> she was like, i had an epiphany. >> called my parents, mom started hysterical laughing, she thought i was joking. i told them, i'm moving home. >> we had this crazy idea. we just couldn't shake it. >> i'm allie. >> i'm lauren. >> and we're fatty sundays. >> reporter: it turned into a successful business inspired by their mother's recipe. >> that was her thing, the sprinkled chocolate-covered pretzels. they were the shorter rods, they had the handle. >> reporter: fatty sundays pretzels come in 11 flavors ranging from birthday cake to pb and j. the catchy name inspired by the one day out of the week when the family would indulge. but starting a gourmet dessert business wasn't always so sweet. these sisters had to rely on each other as they faced challenges growing their brand. >> we worked around the clock the first few years, put everything into it.

>> long, late, scary nights in a kitchen or wherever we were, just like banging our head against the wall, trying to figure stuff out. at least it was both of us. >> reporter: for other entrepreneurs starting out lauren says one word in particular can go a long way. >> i'd say the power of no. you can't be everything to everyone at all times. >> reporter: lauren says while it can be hard turning down an opportunity, it's crucial to focus on what will help your company grow the most. another word of advice, play to your strengths. >> as the company has grown we've been able to divide our focuses and work at what we're best at. i can say allie is the left side of the brain, i'm the right side of the brain, and that's why we work so well together. >> just like me, these sisters had no culinary background. >> no culinary experience, neither did their mom, whose recipe this was based off of. >> and it's not the soft pretzels. >> no, they're the rods. we have nuggets here. >> national pretzel day. >> these are fancy but there's nothing wrong with a regular old

beginning for dozens of college football's best players. >> the nfl for the first time brought its annual draft to nashville. after months of speculation, football fans finally learned where some of the young men hoping to be the league's next stars will start their careers. here's abc's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: music city transformed into nfl draft city. more than 150,000 fans packing downtown nashville watching college football stars' dreams of going pro come true. >> the arizona cardinals select -- kyler murray! quarterback, oklahoma. >> reporter: not much surprise in the crowd as 2018 heisman trophy winner kyler murray became the first pick, signing with arizona. >> seeing his dream become a reality is just -- it's just unbelievable. it really is. >> reporter: and a predictable follow, ohio state defensive end nick bosa joining the san francisco 49ers following a family tradition of playing in the nfl. >> my dad played for the miami dolphins, first-round pick in '87. >> reporter: the draft airing here on abc for the first time. night one hosted by abc's own robin roberts, sharing some of

me upstairs, yeah, yeah. >> well, there's will ganss, how about we move on. turning to former vice president joe biden hoping the third time's a charm as he tries to deny president trump a second term. >> the first day of biden's 2020 presidential candidacy started with a video and ended with a fundraiser in philadelphia where he continued to take direct aim at the president. abc's lana zak has the details. >> reporter: former vice president joe biden says he spoke with president obama about an endorsement but -- >> i asked president obama not to endorse. he doesn't want to -- whoever wins this nomination should win it on their own merits. >> president obama's spokesperson katie hill said the former president believes selecting biden as his running mate was, quote, one of the best decisions he ever made. but the former president is not expected to endorse anyone in this diverse field of 20. the republican national committee trying to hit biden on that point saying obama isn't even endorsing his righthand man. biden faces criticism for his handling of the anita hill

hearings. according to the "new york times" he reached out to professor hill earlier this month but she was left unsatisfied by the conversation. but as the former vice president biden already leads many of the polls. >> how are you feeling today? >> i'm feeling great. >> reporter: in his campaign announcement video, biden calls out president trump for his reaction to the neo-nazi marches and the death of heather heyer. >> he said, quote, very fine people on both sides. very fine people on both sides? >> reporter: framing the race as a fight for american ideals. >> if we give donald trump eight years in the white house, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation. who we are. and i cannot stand by and watch that happen. >> reporter: the president tweeting a response to biden's candidacy writing, welcome to the race, sleepy joe. if you make it i will see you at the starting gate. in addition to the republicans, biden is also facing criticism from at least one liberal democratic group who accuse him of being a centrist.

lana zak, abc news, washington. >> joe biden will give his first interview to abc news on "the view." then jill and joe biden will sit down with robert roberts tuesday on "good morning america." federal agents have raided the homes and offices of baltimore's embattled mayor. investigators were seen carrying out boxes of evidence. catherine pugh is under scrutiny for the sale of her self-published children's book to entities that do business with the city and a hospital when she was a board member. the 69-year-old democrat is on paid leave for health issues. the state's republican governor is now among those calling for her resignation. a former florida police officer was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the fatal shooting of a black man. drummer corey jones was headed home when his car broke down on a highway off-ramp in 2015. he was on the phone when newman raja approached. raja was out of uniform and in an unmarked white van. the confrontation escalated once

raja noticed a weapon. jones was a licensed gun owner. raja is the first florida officer sentenced for an on-duty shooting in 30 years. the tornado that ripped through northern louisiana took special aim at the city of ruston where two people were killed. it flattened buildings, uprooted trees and knocked down power lines across the city. the mayor describes the damage as incredible devastation. cleanup is getting under way in st. augustine, texas where a powerful tornado raced through town leaving behind a major mess. in new orleans heavy rain delayed major events including a pga tournament and the first day of the city's annual jazz festival. the storm system is heading toward the carolinas bringing the threat of damaging winds, hail, and possible flash flooding. president trump entertained young visitors at the white house. >> the president hosted take our daughters and sons to work day. his audience was made up of children of white house staff and reporters. the president advised the kids to avoid drugs, alcohol, and smoking and to enjoy their lives. he also let them know their parents do very important work

we know that police only say there had been multiple fatalities and a fiery crash in lakewood along i-70 involving 12 cars and two semis. a short distance away also on i-70, a school bus and a semi got into an accident in wheatridge. no injuries were reported. the founder of an arizona animal sanctuary is recovering after he says he was bitten by a tiger. he says the attack was his fault and the tiger will not be put down. >> this attack came two days after another tiger went after a zookeeper in kansas. abc's zachary kiesch has the details. >> reporter: this man, jonathan craft, is recovering after being pulled from the mouth of bowie, 11-year-old bengal tiger, at an animal sanctuary he runs in northwest arizona. craft, a former las vegas illusionist, is taking blame for the attack saying he was rushing to protect the animals from heavy rain when the tiger pushed a gate open and bit him. craft posted online, i'm recovering well and appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers. this is the second attack involving animals in captivity

in just days. sun ji, a 275-pound sumatran tiger, pounced on topeka zookeeper kristin hayden ortega. the staff was able to lure the tiger away using food. >> our staff response saved a keeper's life, saved the tiger's life. >> reporter: the zoo saying human error was to blame. both are expected to make a full recovery and experts are calling their survival a miracle. neither tiger will be euthanized. zachary kiesch, abc news, new york. >> our thanks to zachary. again, incredible this happening just days apart. and also the fact that neither one of these animals will be put down because they're saying these are animals in their natural habitats. a 400-year-old geneva bible stolen from pittsburgh's carnegie library is back in the u.s. it arrived in a box secured with bubble wrap. the bible was found in the netherlands. it was stolen along with hundreds of other items in the 1990s. >> a former archivist at the library and rare book dealer are
