fans who saw it first. and the nfl draft, the top picks, surprises and fashion. plus, the tweet going viral overnight showing how the draft is spoiling a bride's plan. good friday morning, everyone. i'm kenneth moton. >> and i'm mona kosar abdi in for janai norman. we begin with those ferocious storms leaving much of the deep south in ruins and killing five people so far this week. >> the line of devastation stretches about 150 miles. you can see strong storms hitting the florida panhandle and after a night of tornado warnings and downpours, the system now targets the northeast. overnight pounding rain and winds slamming several states. this video taken outside dayton, ohio, moments after forecasters issued a tornado warning which has since expired. the powerful winds ripping the .

the severe storms part of the same tornado producing system tracking across 150 miles cutting a long swath of destruction. ruston, louisiana, took a direct hit with the massive twister with at least 136-mile-an-hour winds, this new video taken on the campus of louisiana tech. the softball field in tatters. classes now canceled. >> we were literally just here last night and with a great crowd and great weather and then now look at it. >> it's unbelievable. something like this is so quick and powerful. you don't even know it's coming. >> i've never seen damage like this before. >> reporter: this motel 6 now destroyed with part of its roof torn off. abc's marcus moore is there. >> look at this. stairs at this hotel that once >> reporter: louisiana governor john bel edwards declaring a state of emergency urging people to stay home if they can. >> everyone needs to understand that now is not the time to come could ruston to sightsee. we have a lot of work going on out there to clear debris,

to do search and rescue and make sure that overpasses and bridges are safe. >> the storm will slowly make its way into the northeast. we'll have the full forecast in minutes. now to the race for the white house. former vice president joe biden capping off the first day of his 2020 campaign with a philadelphia fund-raiser. biden is taking direct aim at president trump hoping to deny him a second term. abc's elizabeth hur has more from washington. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: mona, good morning to you. we are here and joe biden hoped to raise half a million and he met that goal and then some. so it appears his supporters are coming out in force but so are his critics. joe biden kicking off his bid w in his home state of delaware for some pizza and ending in philadelphia with a fund-raiser. >> we have to start uter ofe. [ applause ] >> reporter: where on this night he did not mention president trump by his name but stuck to the message he delivered in this

video released earlier announcing his candidacy. >> if we give donald trump eight years in the white house, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation. >> reporter: president trump responding on fox news questioning biden's intelligence. >> i've known joe over the years. he's not the brightest light bulb in the group. >> reporter: this is biden's third time running for president and the 76-year-old brings a long track record and with it scrutiny. among them, his handling of the anita hill hearings. according to "the new york times," biden reached out to professor hill earlier this month. his campaign saying biden expressed regret for what she endured, but hill told the paper, i cannot be satisfied by simply saying i'm sorry for what happened to you. i will be satisfied when i know there is real change and real accountability and real purpose. the republican national committee is also blasting biden saying, quote, obama isn't even endorsing his right-hand man.

>> i asked president obama not to endorse and he doesn't want to -- we should -- whoever wins this nomination should win it on its own merit. >> reporter: no endorsement, but that is a presidential tradition and president obama said in a statement selecting biden as his running mate was one of the best decisions he ever made. kenneth and mona. >> thank you, elizabeth, for that report. and joe biden will give his first interview to abc on "the view" today and then joe and jill biden will sit down with down our robin roberts for an interview airing tuesday on "good morning america." nearly two years after the death of otto warmbier, sources are revealing that north korea had demanded $2 million to pay for his medical care before releasing him. an american envoy reportedly agreed to pay the bill, but it's not clear if the money was ever sent. warmbier had been sentenced to hard labor for allegedly trying to steal a propaganda poster. he died six days after he was flown back to the u.s. in a coma. kim jong-un is heading back to north korea today after closing out his summit with

russian president vladimir putin. kim continued to push for security guarantees in order to end his nuclear program. and he accused the u.s. of acting in bad faith at the summit in hanoi. putin offered to discuss details of their talks with the u.s. baltimore's embattled mayor is facing growing calls for her resignation. that's after the fbi and irs agents raided her home and offices thursday. catherine pugh is under scrutiny for the sale of her self-published children's books to entities that do business with the hospital where she was a board member. she is on paid leave for health issues. police say a deadly crash near denver is, quote, true carnage. more than a dozen vehicles including at least three semis were involved in the fiery accident on interstate 70 in lakewood. authorities say a runaway semi slammed into stopped traffic setting off an explosion. investigators say there were multiple fatalities. at least ten other people were injured.

and this morning we're learning how a 5-year-old illinois boy died as his parents face a judge on murder charges. the coroner says that aj freund died from multiple blunt force injuries. investigators say the boy was forced into a cold shower for an extreme period of time, extended rather. his parents allegedly wrapped his body in plastic and dumped him in a shallow grave in the woods. they are each being held on a $5 million bond. time now for a look at your weather on this friday morning. good friday morning. things quieting down across the southern plains, however, more showers and storms from florida up the atlantic coast into new england. the best threat for anything severe is going to be from philly southward to myrtle beach. damaging wind gusts, flash flooding, even a few tornadoes can't be ruled out. out west it's the big-time heat, 90s in the interior desert, some spots close to 100, and as we head into friday night through saturday night, perhaps some snow from the dakotas into the great lakes.

now word that havlicek has passed away. he reportedly had parkinson's. john havlicek was 79 years old. a former florida police officer was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the fatal shooting of a black man. musician corey jones was heading home when his car broke down on a highway off-ramp in 2015. he was on phone when officer nouman raja approached. the confrontation escalated once raja noticed a weapon. he was a licensed gun owner. prosecutors say he feared raja out of uniform was a robber. a fake german heiress is facing eight years in prison. prosecutors say anna sorokin stole a quarter of a million dollars from bank, hotels and friends. it was all to fund a lavish new york lifestyle. she was acquitted of one of the most serious charges, attempting to steal more than $1 million from citi national bank. sentencing is scheduled for may 9th. sorokin is also facing deportation for overstaying her visa.

amazon says it wants to change its two-day prime shipping program to just one day and while announcing company earnings, officials said amazon will spend $800 million by july to update its infrastructure and start making those changes. the program is expected to speed shipping times for prime members worldwide. facebook is taking steps to ban personality quiz apps from its platform. this follows the cambridge analytica scandal. the data from acquired information on up to 87 million people through the quiz app is this is your digital life. the social networking giant is also banning apps from asking for data that doesn't improve the users' experiences. well, after two weeks of teases on social media, taylor swift is out with a new single called "me." during last night's nfl draft swift told our robin roberts that the song is about celebrating and embracing your individuality. coming up on "gma" an abc news exclusive. swift's tour of the place where her musical journey took flight. well, coming up, a global

university in los angeles taking that measure over a possible exposure. abc's matt gutman has more. >> reporter: that measles scare racing through two of the biggest university systems in the country. many dozens possibly exposed to what is considered one of the world's most contagious viruses. >> we have five cases, four of which are linked as an outbreak that stem from a traveler who was unvaccinated. >> reporter: that traveler coming in from abroad apparently going through los angeles airport. one of the busiest in the world on april 1st and then going on to ucla with its 45,000 students to the psychology department on three days in early april. >> a few of the cases have been in other places attending, you know, ucla classes as well as being in the library, and as a result of that, we have a high number of contacts that may have been exposed. >> reporter: that cal state library, one of the most visited

spots on campus. >> 2,000 visitors in that library a day. most of them don't sign in or out, so we've had a lot of exposure to folks that we actually can't identify. >> reporter: over 300 students and faculty now under quarantine at the two universities with no access to public areas or dorms. >> if they are not immune to measles, then they must be kept away from others in order to not have that unintentional spread of measles should they come in contact with others who may not be immune as well. >> reporter: the measles is an exquisitely contagious virus. it can linger in the air for two hours. its incubation period is 21 days so a lot of those folks are going to be stuck in quarantine for at least a few days, and some of the older faculty may have a hard time finding their medical records showing that they've been vaccinated. they could spend up to two weeks in quarantine. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. >> our thanks to matt. ntsb investigators will be

outside chicago today at the scene of a chemical leak that sent a toxic plume into the air sickening dozens of people. a tractor was towing two large containers of ammonia when the leak occurred. although local police are not saying exactly what caused it. people living in or driving through the area say the air was so thick and the smell was so strong that they couldn't breathe. >> we couldn't see beyond the first step here. it was that thick. we couldn't see three feet. it was heavy -- it was like a fog but it was real strong. >> went around and made sure our windows were shut and the storm windows were tight. >> first responders among the 37 people sent to the hospital. seven are in critical but stable condition. one firefighter is suffering what doctors describe as life-threatening injuries. the land of the free and the home of the brave apparently comes with a whole lot of pressure. a new gallup poll says americans are among the most stressed out people in the world. people across the globe were

asked about feelings they experienced the previous day. more than half of americans said they were stressed and 45% said they were worried and those under 50 had the highest stress levels. only greece, the philippines, tanzania had higher numbers. >> we're not stressed. are you stressed? >> nope. a 400-year-old bible stolen from pittsburgh's carnegie library is now back in the u.s. it arrived in a box secured in bubble wrap. the fbi says the bible was found in the netherlands. it was stolen along with hundreds of other items in the 1990s. two men including a former archivist at the library are accused of stealing more than $8 million in rare books. but that book is now back. well, up next in "the pulse," the nfl draft, the top picks and must see fashion. also, the draft, nashville is buzzing, but not everyone in music city is happy including these brides-to-be. plus, "avengers: endgame" finally hits theaters. the first reviews with no spoilers. ♪

♪ "the pulse" on this friday starts with last night's nfl draft in nashville. quarterback kyler murray was the first pick chosen by the cardinals. he's the second straight heisman trophy winner from the university of oklahoma. to be picked first. >> murray came through rocking a pink custom-made suit with maroon stripes. he told his designer he wanted something like leonardo dicaprio in "the great gatsby." >> steelers picked devin bush and got everyone's attention with his outfit. some sort of white sling over his black suit. analysts called it the most creative of the night. others, they weren't so kind. >> getting some bobby brown vibes right there. one more to mention. daniel jones is going to the

giants. the team calls jones a franchise player. well, tell that to the giants fans who were there in inville. their reaction not too positive. the nfl draft brought big crowds to nashville but not everyone is happy about it. >> music city has become known as bachelorette central. >> yeah, brides-to-be are complaining because they unknowingly booked their bachelorette parties the same week as the nfl draft. bars and restaurants are packed. roads are closed and uber cars are hard to come by. still the ladies say they're making the best of it. >> did you realize that the nfl draft was going to be here? >> no. >> no idea. like mind blown when we landed. >> we had no idea. >> no idea and i think my dad is very disappointed in me that i didn't know. >> the person that's going to pay for this is my husband when i refuse to watch football the entire season. like i'm -- no super bowl. >> no. >> oh, my goodness. the reporter working on the story tweeted this picture showing a less than pleased bride. it quickly went viral with thousands of retweets. can you imagine brides-to-be there.

making news right now at 4:27, an oakland police officer stabbed just steps away from police headquarters. the motive is still a mystery. new trouble for san francisco's muni. a contract fight is now slowing service citywide. and let's go dubs. let's get it done already. the warriors could be celebrating tonight or be one game away from elimination. obviously that's not what we want to happen. so we are, of course, rooting them on. good morning. it is friday, april 26th. >> yes, we made it. meteorologist mike nicco is here to tell us what our weekend looks like. >> it could be cooler. did you notice that yesterday? >> it dropped, at least in san francisco, like ten degree in a matter of a few minutes. >> back into the 60s. >> like we went from summer to

winter. >> isn't it amazing when the sea breeze kicks in how drastically it changes our temperatures? let's see where we end up this afternoon. low to mid-60s into francisco, mid to upper 70s around the bay. and mainly some low 80s inland. we will hit mid-80s around concord, antioch and santa rosa. we have some fog out there. it's thicker than yesterday and more widespread. we'll take a look at that up next. first a look at the commute. we are starting off with trouble in the east bay looking live at caltrans. we've got a crash involving, i believe, three vehicles total. it sounds like one vehicle was driving recklessly and caused this collision. that first vehicle hit the barrier on the right side and then a semi swerved to avoid hitting that vehicle and hit another sedan. the three right lanes are blocked. we do have injuries and we have a backup.

it's not huge yet but getting through the short stretch from highway 4 to get past the scene that will add a few minutes to your commute. next update in a couple >> alexis, thanks. in the east bay a violent crash into an oakland daycare as dozens of children and staff were inside. this happened near 86th avenue and a street yesterday afternoon. luckily no children were hurt. police say the driver is facing carjacking and assault charges. here is ama daetz. >> reporter: kids were inside the children's center on the corner of 86th avenue and a street. a witness told abc 7 news she saw a shirtless man yelling at daycare staff after they refused to let him pick up his kids. shortly after the suspect carjacked a woman at a nearby church and rammed the daycare. >> i ran inside and everybody hid. i was in the closet with parents

and kids. everybody is crying. >> our officers were immediately on scene as he was climbing out of the car, he started to run. our officersimgalarounea no children were out there at the time. they were able to arrest him. everything happened so quickly. >> reporter: the suspect has a stayaway order from the daycare. 45 kids attend the school and 15 staff on duty. no children were hurt. one female staffer was injured and treated at the scene. >> it was so scary because you never expect something to happen like this where there's children, churches and a whole bunch going on at the time. >> reporter: ama daetz, abc 7 news. >> a wild story. glad the kids are okay. 4:30 right now. a quick update on your weather and traffic. mike? >> hi, everybody. the fog is up in the north bay, santa rosa, petaluma, and even in the south bay it's down around gilroy right now.
