good morning, bay area. let's get up and get going. this is abc 7 mornings. >> it's saturday, april 27th. i'm chris nguyen. let's take a look at the forecast and here's lisa argen. >> we've been getting cooler and thanks to the onshore flow and the low clouds and fog and around the bay we're looking at numbers in the mid-40s in the north bay. it's cool there, 54 across the bay in oakland with low 50s in san ramon so we are looking at the fog to stay with us throughout the morning hours, but check it out, it does clear and as we get through the afternoon it even clears to the coast and it will take some time, though, and we'll look for

partly sunny skies there and the persistent onshore flow and elsewhere it will warm up inland. so as we look at the numbers through 1:00 it's in the upper 60s inland and 50s by the coast and we'll have a few high clouds and late in the day we're back into the mid-60s and overall numbers will range from the upper 50s coast side to near 80 inland. we'll talk about your neighborhood and what to expect for the second half of the forecast in a few minutes. >> the usgs reports a magnitude 3.5 earthquake hit the east bay this morning. it was centered in pacheco near concord. some people reported waking up from the jolt. there have been no reports of damage or injuries. >> developing news, a suspect in two bay area murders is in custody this morning. the first happened in oakland on market street and the other in bay view district. the suspect targeted family members. this is the man police arrested,

stefon jefferson. oakland police released a photo of him and san francisco police released these surveillance images. authorities say he was arrested in douglas county, nevada. the first shooting happened around 10:15 yesterday morning in oakland. police say a man was shot several times. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the shooting in san francisco happened around 1:30 in the afternoon on arelius walker drive ask police have not provided many details there. witnesses told officers they heard a pop and saw a man lying on the ground and he died at the hospital. a suspect is on the loose after another deadly shooting on the east bay and this one in berkeley. san francisco police say they are aware of it. a man was shot in people's park around 2:45 yesterday afternoon. he later died at a hospital. police say it was not a random act. in the south bay, the man accused of intentionally running down eight pedestrians in sunnyvale made his first court

appearance. after ward, investigators dropped a bombshell. >> based on our investigation, new evidence shows that the defendant intentionally targeted the victims based on their race and his belief that they were of the muslim faith. >> 34-year-old isaiah peoples did not enter a plea. his arraignment is postponed until may 16th. abc reporter amanda del castillo has details. >> reporter: tuesday's crash could have been racially motivated. >> new evidence shows that the defendant intentionally targeted the victims based on their race and his belief that they were of the muslim faith. >> the council on american islamic relations say muslims already question safety in mosques or head scarves. that brings that concern to city streets. >> people may not realize this, but the victims were not muslim.

they were mistaken by muslim by the assailant. his family and friends all describe him as a religious man. we connected with his congregation, renewal church in sunnyvale which often rents out space at the senior center. lead pastor ulysses wang shared this statement. church roughly one year ago. we've never witnessed any behavior from him that would lead us to suspect this. pointing to people's military background and changes to the suspect's mental state. >> this act clearly was a product of some mental disorder or mental defect that caused this to happen. >> reporter: if convicted peoples would face life in prison. outside the hall of justice. amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. we've been continuously updating the story on our website, abc 7 news.com. if police give any more updates in coming days we'll live stream

moment happened. >> pretty spectacular that somebody would stop traffic just to take something out of somebody else's truck. >> while hayward police work on identifying the person in the vi w c belongs to, sean plans to keep an eye out, too. >> just part of the game, part of the industry. yeah i have to be more careful and lock the tools up. >> deon lynn, abc 7 news. >> on the peninsula, authorities are investigating a report of a car off the cliff near montera. yesterday crews started the search after a driver reported seeing red sedan going off a cliff. a man reported missing in their city was last seen in a red toyota camry and may be near montera. searchers did find parts from a toyota camry, but no car or driver. >> in the east bay for the second weekend in a row, oakland police are promising to crack

down on illegal sideshows. they'll have a large contingency of sideshows and they're promising to issue citations and make arrests. there was a similar exfort by opd last weekend that had no sideshows. >> in the citygoing tat illega of show activity. life and takes on such a negative level. >> this comes after a sideshow on april 14th during which a delivery driver was held at gun point and his truck set on fire. an ac transit bus was also set on fire and there was also a sideshow the weekend prior, but it was mostly disruptive and not violent. time now is 5:09 on this saturday morning and we are off to a cool start throughout the bay area and much different than past days. >> the onshore flow over the past few days and you probably noticed the cooldown from the exploratory camera and you can see the scattered clouds and

diversion given what people there have been through. abc 7 news reporter is with some friends. >> welcome back to guerneville. at least two weeks, two months ago covering the third or fourth largest flood ever in this place. estimates are it cost $150 million in property damage and another $25 million to infrastructure. this is the truck where we spent most of those two weeks, doing stories sitting in the back of a lot of people. >> it was definitely shocking and it was more than i was expecting. >> that's lisa flint. she and her husband jason own and are still repairing the farm hand delhi. >> you had a thing where you were selling gift certificates. you didn't want to take a handout. did it work? >> it did. we sold a little over 10,000 and that definitely helped out with construction costs and different things that we needed.

>> to give you an idea of how high the water was here. they had to repaint the sign. that's high. the river is just down here outside this window. of course, on the day of the flood the river was in here. jason? >> yes. >> you broke into tears when we talked initially. >> are you past that now? >> sometimes. >> are you more encouraged than you were? >> yeah. absolutely. we've come a long way and we've had a lot of help. >> that's good. >> hopefully in two weeks you open up? >> that's the hope. no more water, please. >> back into satellite truck and going down into town on river road which is always just a name until we pass through during the flood and then we realize that river road trul he to be a part of the russian river. >> we were on the back of a national guard truck and looking at the back of the truck you had a board you could have surfed on

it. we're coming into town and all of this was under water during the flood. no way in. no way out and guerneville was an island and i'll tack a left turn on mill street. mill street goes down from this level. so the water came up over the river, crested over river road and then down into mill street. the last time i went this route on mill street it was in a canoe and people were stuck in their houses. all these months later. what did you learn? >> you never refuse a favor during the flood and everyone will tell you exactly the same. >> what favors? what kind of friends? ? >> if you have a canoe, it's everybody's canoe. if you have a fan that will blow air into a building, it's everybody's fan. whatever you have you make it available to your neighbor as soon as you're done with it.

festival. they do it every year from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. put on by the chamber of commerce. they want to celebrate that guerneville is coming back, 1:00 to 4:00 and you come out and take a look at this beautiful river. >> we're a resilient folk up here. >> did you ever give up? >> no. definitely not, we're here every single day. >> we've looked at businesses and talked to their owners and we've seen where the waters were and where the waters have disappeared from. we've seen the river and talked about this big weekend, vent and there's one more place i had to check out. >> northwoods golf course. >> it's in great shape. abc 7 news. >> 5:17 is our time. new details on a wildfire that ravaged lake county last year. cal fire says the ponte fire was spurned by target shooting. it burned ten homes and more

than 10,000 acres. the case is in the hands of the district attorney's office, but it is not clear if someone will face criminal charges for igniting the fire. uc berkeley offered free measles vaccinations in its campaign to prevent an outbreak. this as 1,000 students and staff from two southern california universities have been ordered to stay home. officials at ucla and cal-state los angeles are working to identify people who may have been exposed to the highly contagious disease. a student from ucla and csula have come down with measle sfloos millions of marvel fans are expected to pack movie theaters to watch "avengers endgame." the film is long, to the tune of three hours. trevino fortsman who decided to risk missing a part of the movie. >> movie snacks can be delicious, but ahead of ay three

a bit taller and this is a cut off low and an interesting feature and this will impact southern california's weather, bringing more clouds, but for us, no, not really and it makes a nice-looking loop at the satellite. as we look at the visibility, four miles along the coast and elsewhere, 9 in hayward and oakland. certainly not bad. 53 for your morning temperature in hayward as well as union city and a few down around fremont and 50 downtown and the low to mid 40s in san rafael and santa rosa. here's emoriville where we are looking at a quiet start and the clouds and some of that locally around the bay. maybe three to four degrees cooler and still in the 80s. yesterday the concord airport was at 86 degrees and today more like the low 80s and it will be breezy and grebright to start t

week and we'll have the low clouds and fog and the sea breeze locally at the coast and inland staying quite warm, but tomorrow will be the cooler day out of the two. 58 half moon bay, looking for 60 ocean beach and 68 in santa cruz and look at the water temperature, 54 degrees and looking at a few peeks of sun and 79 in san jose and 76 sunnyvale and san francisco, 64. a cool afternoon in the north bay, mid to upper 70s from petaluma to santa rosa and 72 in oakland and you head inland and another warming and 82 in antioch as well as concord. so numbers here have been pretty warm, still on the warm side, but in the lower 80s and if you're headed into san francisco for the afternoon, yes, the yankees are in town and we will see some sunshine for sure, but starting out with a lot of clouds and temperatures will be in the lower 60s at about 1:00, climbing to about 62 degrees at

4:00 in the arch. once again, the highs in the city termed by the low clouds and fog and the afternoon sea breeze w hth microclimates in full swing headed inland. so the accuweather, seven-day forecast featuring the upper 50s at the coast with afternoon sun and 74 around the bay and 82 inland. the cooler day tomorrow on the order of 4 degrees inland and also around the bay and looking at monday, we've got a lot of sunshine and it will be breezy overall, but in the mid-70s throughout the middle of the week and slightly warmer by the end of the week and tempered around the bay and the coast you'll need a sweatshirt in you're headed there. kind of an ideal forecast. >> looks so pleasant. >> doesn't it? >> lisa, thanks. just ahead, some car engines are supposed to purr, but not like this. the tough kitten that took an

hundreds of people gathered in san francisco last night to make a profound difference in the lives of young people. the annual big brothers, big sisters gala took place at the fair mount hotel. it matches young people with caring adults who serve as mentors. dan ashley emceed the event this year which featured some speakers who talked about how big brothers and big sisters changed their lives for the better. this fluffy-looking kitten looks pretty good after enduring a 180 trip from salinas to the mall. loud meowing was heard after the car finally arrived at the car's

day, and we have been experiencing some cooler weather on the peninsula right now looking at upper 40s from pacifica. 53, foster city and waking up to low clouds and fog and also in the north bay with the vis usuality reduced from parts of the north bay, 54 in san ramon and that would be napa and santa rosa. elsewhere, it's in the mid-50s in livermore and a mild start and as we look toward san jose this morning. you'll notice that we break into sunshine and still cool on the coast and 70 around the bay and we're up into the low 70s by about 12:00 and then the afternoon, low 80s arrive inland. that is cooler and three degrees cooler and mid-70s and you'll notice the breeze around the bay and also at the coast and just high clouds and a lot of sun today. chris? >> lisa, thank you. this morning a morgue ather the baby are okay after a car struck

toddler to thee helped the pair >> i was coming up clairedon going to city college of san francisco. >> reporter: what happened next could have been a lot worse.ors. this white van was making a left-hand turn when the driver noticed a baby and the stroller and she made eye contact with the mother who seemed to acknowledge her. there was one little problem. she thought it would be okay to cross the not section, but she failed to see me to the right. that's miles ditman, the driver of a blue mercedes who was broad sided and the impact pushed his car to the stroller with the baby in it. >> i was the 911 caller. >> christine was walking when she heard the crash. ditman explained what happened next. >> as i got out of my car the baby was lying kind of on the side of the stroller because the stroller was tipped over and i bruisi and the nkka me thne.

paramedic. the mother a few feet away from the baby had not been hit by the car, but was on the ground. ditman brought the baby over to her. then the baby started to cry because it was a mother, daughter/son instinct when you see your mother you know something is wrong. >> it's unlike many streets in san francisco. >> for example, few cars ever follow the 35 mile an hour speed limit and despite having a school there, there's only one traffic light and we drove the entire length of clairendon, not a single stop sun. lynn bach lives nearby and knows how dangerous it can be. >> where was the baby? >> right here. >> right here. >> mom and baby were right here on the ground. >> both appeared to be okay.

it was a close call for everyone involved. >> leann melendez, abc 7 news. it will take bart riders in contra costa longer to get from point a to point b and it's the contra costa center stations this weekend so crews can replace the ageing track there. bart is offering free bus service to the stations and riders should expect 20 minutes of their normal trip planned in the area and there will be closures during memorial day weekend and in june. the jail will go down as next week. the move would save at least $6 million. the oakland jail has about 400 inmates, but can house up to 800. the jail in dublin can handle around 3,000, but is well under that number right now. sheriff ahern says there will not be any layoffs because of the closure. happening today, san

francisco police will join an organization for a gun buyback. 100 bucks will be offered for pistols, shot duguns and rifles questions asked. it will run from 9:00 until noon on oak dale avenue and third street. check your medicine cabinets for old prescription drugs to make sure they don't end up in the wrong hands. today is national prescription drug takeback day. many bay area law enforcement agencies are taking part. all medication will be accepted. you can take your pills to the local police station or sheriff's office for safe disposal. last year's event brought 900,000 pounds of unused or expired pills. we are all connected to the ocean when something in it starts to make the marine life sick, it means we are also at risk. the marine mammal center in marin county advances global ocean conservation through

marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation. here is the scientific research and education center. >> in a given year we can rescue between 700 and 2,000 patients. rate now we've got close to 85 baby elephant seals. >> we wish they had stayed with theirotrs gff int ocean and then they learn how to swim and how to feed themselves in the shallow waters, but somehow they got separated from their mother and they come to us because they don't know how to feed. they don't know how to swim and they don't know how to fish. my name is nancy and i work in the kitchen. i am generally for the fish, the free feeds and picky eaters. oh, yes, we have picky eaters. i do a lot of dishes and i do more dishes here than i could ever possibly do at home. we have elephant seal progression. it's a technique of introducing

them to fish. i'm helping them understand how to eat it. >> the elephant seals that you hear in the background, they're actually born at about 75 pounds and after one month they should be 300 pounds. most of the animals we have here are probably 100 pounds or less. they begin to flare forward. like an angry porcupine. before we get them to eat fish on their own we sometimes have to tube feet them and it will take fish, grind it up to what looks like a mill being shake. we might add viet minutes and meds with salmon oil for calories and we'll go into the pen and they'll place a tube gently into their mouth and their throat until it gets to their stomach. it's a process. some are quicker than others to learn and some are real slow. we work with them and they all get released and we are very happy when we go out again. it's a critical first responder
