>> good morning, bay area. let's get up and get going. this is abc 7 mornings. it's saturday, april 27th. good morning, and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with the first look at the accuweather forecast. let's check in with lisa argen tracking the doppler forecast. >> our marine layer is 1500 feet and along the san mateo coast, locally around the bay, some fog, but as we look here walnut creek, clear skies and temperatures are stacking up like this, oakland, 51 in morgan hill and 54 in half moon bay and another live picture from the camera. partly cloudy sky should be a nice day downtown and on the cool side with the onshore push and mid-40s with 55 in vacaville pretty strong, delta breeze cooling you on today where you can see some of the fog up high from the upper elevation. throughout the day today, we've

got plenty of sunshine, clouds will thin out along the coast and the sun coming up in 18 minutes and afternoon highs will climb through the 70s, midday and low 80s in the afternoon with mid-70s around the bay. chris? >> lisa, thank you. >> new this morning the usgs reports a magnitude 3.5 earthquake hit at 2:36. it was centered in pacheco west of concord. some people reported waking up from the jolt. there have been no reports of damage or injuries. >> developing news, a suspect in two bay area murders is in custody. the first happened in oakland on margaret street and the other in the bay view district. the suspect targeted family members. this is the man police arrested, stefon jefferson. oakland police released a photo of him on the left and san francisco police released these surveillance images on the right. authorities say he was arrested in douglas county, nevada. the first shooting happened

around 10:15 yesterday mornin in oakland. police say a man was shot several times. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the shooting in san francisco happened around 1:30 in the afternoon on arelius walker drive. police have not provided many details. witnesses told officers they heard a pop and saw a man lying on the ground. he died at the hospital. a suspect is on the loose after another deadly shooting in the east bay. this one in berkeley. police in san francisco say they are aware of this case. a man was shot in peoples park around 2:45 yesterday afternoon. he later died at a hospital. police say it was not a random act. >> in the south bay, the man accused of intentionally running down eight pedestrians in sunnyvale made his first court appearance. afterwards, investigators dropped a bombshell. >> based on our investigation, new evidence shows that the defendant intentionally targeted the victims based on their race

and his belief that they were of the muslim faith. >> 34-year-old isaiah peoples did not enter a plea. his arraignment has opinion postponed until may 16th. abc news reporter amanda del castillo has the details. >> a bombshell statement from the department of public safety. tuesday's crash could have been racially motivated. >> new evidence shows that the defendant intentionally targeted the victims based on their race and his belief that they were of the muslim faith. >> the council on american islamic relations say many muslims question the safety at mosques and in head scarves. >> people may not realize this, but the victims here were actually not muslim. they were mistaken by muslim by the assailant. police say he was on his way to bible study. his family describe him as a religious man. we connected with the congregation which often runs out space at the senior city

montera. no car or driver. in the east bay, for the second weekend in a row, oakland police are promising to crack down on illegal sideshows. opd will be dedicating a quote, large contingency of officers specifically to sideshows and they're promising to issue s eggs a sightations and tow cars. >> the city of oakland, weir not going to tolerate illegal sideshow activity. it take away the quality of life and it impacts on such a negative level. >> this comes after a sideshow on april 14th during which a delivery driver was held at gun point and his truck set on fire. an ac transit bus was also set on fire. there was also a sideshow the weekend prior, but it was mostly disruptive and not violent. new details on a wildfire that ravaged lake county last year. cal fire says the ponte fire was sparked byg. target

>> it's been two months since the russian river flood. today the town of guerneville is holding its annual spring fling event. a much-needed diversion considering what people there have been through. abc 7 news reporter wayne friedman has more. >> welcome back to guerneville, at least for us. two weeks. two months ago covering covthe third or fourth largest flood in this place. estimates say it cost $150 million in property damage and another $25 million to infrastructure. this is the truck where we spent most of those two weeks doing stories, sending them back to the bay area and talking to a lot of people. >> it was definitely shocking. it was more than i was expecting. >> that's lisa flint. she and her husband jason own

and are still repairing the farm hand deli. >> you had a thing where you were selling gift certificates. you didn't want to take a handout. did it work? >> it did. it did. we sold a little over 10,000 and that definitely helped out with construction costs and different things that we needed. >> okay. to give you an idea of how high the water was here. they had to rethink the sign. that's high. the river is just down here outside this window. of course, on the day of the flood, the river was in here. jason. >> yes? >> you broke into tears a lot of times when we talked to you initially. are you past that now? >> sometimes. >> sometimes. are you more encouraged than you were? >> yeah. absolutely. we've come a long way and we've had a lot of help and it's good. >> hopefully in two weeks you open up. >> that's -- that's the hope. no more water. >> no more water, please. >> back in the satellite truck. going into town on river road, which is always just a name

until we pass through here during the flood and then we realize that river road truly had become part of the russian river. thee we back of a national guard truck just looking at the back of the truck and we were making -- if we had a board you could have surfed on it. all of this was under water during the flood. no way in. no way out. guerneville was an island. i'm going to make a left turn here on mill street. mill street goes down from this level. so the water came up off of the river and crested over river road and down into mill's creek and the last time i went this route on mill street and i was in a canoe. and people were stuck in their houses. >> all these months later, what have you learned? >> i learned that you never refuse a favor during a flood. and everyone in town will tell you exactly the same thing. >> yeah.

what favors? what kind of friends? >> if you have a canoe, it's everybody's canoe. if you have a fan that will blow air into a building, it's everybody's fan. whatever you have you make it available to your neighbor as soon as you're done with it. the r3 hotel and they stand for the russian river resort where we are standing now two months ago, water over our heads, and let's come on inside. >> no, we're still not open. >> this is 23? that's where we were before. obviously, all of the rooms are just a shell right now. all of the demolition is done now and it's the rebuild. the rebuild can happen pretty quick. >> you've been positive the whole time? >> yeah. no reason not to be. >> come on, look around. this is a minor inconvenience. anything can be replaced and anything can be fixed. >> that's how guerneville people talk. >> it's a minor inconvenience. it wouldn't be right to do the

anniversary of the flood and today it's at seven feet. during the flood it was almost 46 feet, way over our head and moving a lot faster than where we're standing. the river gives, the river takes. this weekend in guerneville they'll have a spring fling festival. they do it every year it's from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. put on by the chamber of commerce and they want to celebrate that guerneville is coming back 1:00 to 4:00 and you can come out and take a look at this beautiful river. >> we're a resilient folk up here. did you ever give up? no, definitely not. we're here every single day. we are seeing a lot in the guerneville region today and we looked at businesses and talked to the owners and we've seen where the waters were and where the waters have disappeared from and we talked about this big weekend, vent and if you know something, there's one more place i had to check out. northwoods golf course is in

cool and upper 50s for afternoon high and bodega bay and upper 60s in santa cruz. in the south bay today, mostly sunny skies and 76 in cupertino and sunnyvale allowing for numbers to be cool in 67 and palo alto in mountain view, mid-70s and looking at 64 downtown and in the north bay, mid to upper 70s and as you head to calistoga and wine tasting into the east bay. a few clouds early on and then we'll get into the low to mid-70s in san leandro and union city and you head inland and still 80s and taking time to get there. 82 in concord and then if you are looking at the giants game today for the yankees this afternoon, it will be breezy and the sun will be out with low 60s and the accuweather, seven-day

difference in the lives of young people. the annual big brothers, big sisters gala took place at the fair mount hotel. the organization matches young people with caring adults who serve as mentors. abc 7 news anchor dan ashley emceed the event this year which featured speakers who talked about how big brothers and big sisters changed their lives for the better. >> take a look. this fluffy-looking kitten looks pretty good after enduring a 180-mile trip from salinas to sacramento's arden fair mall. the kitten rode in the engine compartment of a ford fusion. loud meowing was heard after the car arrived in the mall's parking lot. firefighters used the jaws of life to free the cat from the vehicle. one of the firefighters has adopted the kitten and has a new name, clutch. still to come on abc 7 mornings. the marine mammal center in sausalito is doing its part to save marine mammals and conserve the ocean. we get a live look at the efforts and behind the seals.

rting your day with us. i'm chris nguyen. we're looking ahead to a pleasant day across the bay. meteorologist lisa argen is tracking the accuweather forecast where you live. >> hi, chris. plus it's good word for it and as you look at the peruvian tall ships and you can see the partly cloudy skies and the mid-50s across bait across the bay and the fog is impacting parts of the bay and the san mateo coast and parts of the inland valleys and mount tam looks pretty nice with numbers in the mid-40s in the north bay. it has been cool where you haven't had the cloud cover and livermore is at 51 and clear in con ford, as well so numbers will stay in the 50s and by noon time, the numbers are climbing into 70s in land and it will be cooler throughout the valleys. >> this morning a mother and her baby are okay after a car struck

a stroller throwing the toddler to the ground. abc 7 news reporter leann melendez spoke to the driver who explained what happened yesterday and how he helped the pair. >> i was coming up clairedon going to city college of san francisco. >> reporter: what happened next could have been a lot worse. this white red cross van was making a left-hand turn on claireendon avenue when the driver noticed a mother and baby in a stroller. she made eye contact with a mother who seemed to acknowledge her. there was one little problem. >> she thought it would be okay to cross the intersection as there was no one there, but she failed to look to her right and see me coming up claireen don. that's miles ditman, the driver who was broad sided. the impact pushed his car toward the stroller with baby in it. >> i was the first 911 caller. >> christine was hiking when she heard the crash. ditman explained what happened next. >> as i got out of my car the

baby was lying kind of on the side of the stroller because the stroller was tipped over and i immediately picked her up and saw she was okay. saw no bleeding or bruising and neck was fine. okay, she could move the neck. >> ditman is studying to be a paramedic. the mother had not been hit by the car, but was on the ground. ditman brought the 21--month-old baby to her. >> when i brought the baby over to her then the baby started to cry because it was a mother/daughter/son instinct because when you see your mother crying you know something is wrong. clairendon every is not like many streets in san francisco. few cars ever follow the 35 mile an hour speed limit and despite having a school there's only one traffic light and we drove the entire elect of clairendon, not a single stop sign. lynn lives nearby and knows how dangerous this street can be.

>> where was the baby? >> right here. the mom and baby were raighter both on the ground. >> reporter: both appeared to be okay. it was a close call for everyone involved. leann melendez, abc 7 news. >> it will take bart riders and contra costa county a bit longer to get from point a to point b. the contra costa center stations this weekend so crews can replace the aging track there. bart is offering free bus service between the stations and riders should expect to add 20 minutes to the normal time of their planned trip through the area. there will be similar closures on memorial day weekend and early june. happening today san francisco police will join an organization for a gun buyback event. brothers against guns will help make the streets safer. $100 will be offered for pistol, shotguns and rifles and $200 will be given and no questions

asked. it will run from 9:00 until noon on oakdale avenue and third street. happening today, check your medicine cabinets for old prescription drugs to make sure they don't end up in the wrong hands. today is takeback day. many agencies are taking part. all medications will be accepted from 10:00 until 2:00 today and you can take your pills to the local police station for safe disposal. last year's event brought in a thousand pounds of unused pills. we are all connected to the ocean. when something starts to make the marine life sick, we are also at risk. it advances global ocean conservation. here's a look inside the scientific research and education center. >> in a given year we can review between 700 and close to 2,000 patients. right now we have close to 85 baby elephant seals.

>> we wish they had stayed with their mothers for 28 days and gotten big and fat and then their mothers went out into the ocean andthey lrn feed themselves in the shallow waters and somehow they get separated from their mothers and they come on us because they don't know how to feed. i am generally responsible for the free feeds and the hand feeds. picky eaters? oh, yes. we have picky eaters. almost every elephant seal that comes in. i do more dishes here than i could possibly do at home. it's a technique of introducing them into fish and helping them understand how to eat it? the elephant seals that you hear in the background, they're actually born at 75 pounds and after one month they should be 300 pounds. est mo of the animals we have here are probably 100 pounds or less. when you get them excited about

the foot and the water, they look spiky. kind of like an angry porcupine. before we can teach them and get them to eat fish on their own we sometimes have to tube feed them. we grind it up into a fish shake, and add salmon oil for calories and then they'll place a tube gently into their mouth and their throat until it gets to their stomach. >> it's a process. some of them are quicker than others to learn. some of them are real slow. slo. >> they all get released and they're happy. >> it is a critical first responders and has the opportunity to see the threats facing the ocean. so whether it's things like ocean trash where we see animals getting entangled in plastic or ingestic bla ingestic plastic. we can start to talk about the solutions people can take to

slightly cooler today as the sea breeze certainly gets going. as you look at the wider perspective and here is the cutoff low that will influence southern california and the mountains and not the bay area and we're looking to the north where the trough will deepen and that allows for the stronger onshore push and the deeper marine layer in 1500 feet. this is sutro, a pretty with the clouds streaming by and it's 53 right now. san jose, mountain view and 52 in half moon bay and from suitisuititro, and a few holes in the overcast here and in the distance with the clear sky. it looks to be a pretty nice-looking afternoon and warmer today by three to five degrees inland. napa, 51 as will as livermore, concord, it's clear and you'll be enjoying a warm day today, but not as warm. san jose, 79 so still above average away from the bay from san jose into concord and
