good morning, bay area. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. it's saturday, april 27th. good morning, and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with the first look at the accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen. she's tracking live doppler 7. >> hi, chris. it's a lonely looking beach, a lot of clouds and near 50 degrees and later this afternoon a few peeks of sun with low to mid-50s and elsewhere, we're in the mid-50s from san francisco and oakland and 56 in mountain view so the cooling trend continues through the entire bay area although we've seen it around the coast and around the bay. here's emoriville, partly cloudy with some of the 40s in santa rosa and 58 in concord and

pretty breezy for you in liver more, 55 and you see the clouds in the golden gate bridge and temperatures will still be warm inland and not as warm. notice throughout the afternoon climbing through the 70s and around the bay, we'll see some low 70s at the coast and not budging too much and pretty cool and breezy there. chris? >> thank you. new this morning, the usgs reported an earthquake centered in pacheco woeft of concord. some people in san francisco and pacifica reported waking up from the jolt and no report of damage or injuries. a bay area double murder suspect is in custody this morning after being wanted for two separate shootings in oakland and san francisco. the chronicle reporting that the suspect targeted members of his own family. police arrested stefon jefferson last night. oakland police released a photo of him and san francisco police

released a photo on the right. the sergeant is expected to be okay. the first shooting happened around 10:15 yesterday morning on market street in oakland. police say a man was shot several times. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the shooting in san francisco happened around 1:30 in the afternoon on arelius walker drive. police have not provided many details there. witnesses told officers they heard a pop and saw a man lying on the ground. he diedt the hospital>> 8:02 is. a suspect is on the loose after another deadly shooting in the east bay. this one in berkeley. a man was shot in people's park around 2:45 yesterday afternoon. he later died at a hospital. police say it was not a random act. in the south bay, the man accused of intentionally running down eight pedestrians in sunnyvale made his first court appearance. afterwards, investigators dropped a bombshell. >> based on our investigation, new evidence shows that the

defendant intentionally targeted the victims based on their race and his belief that they were of the muslim faith. >> 34-year-old isaiah peoples did not enter a plea. his arraignment has been postponed until may 16th. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo has the latest. >> reporter: the chief says tuesday's crash could have been racially motivated. >> new evidence shows that the defendant intentionally targeted the victims based on their race and his belief that they were of the muslim faith. >> the council on american islamic relations say muslims already question safety in mosques or head scarves, adding tuesday's crash brings that concern on to city streets. >> people may not realize this, but the victims were not muslim. they were mistaken by muslim by the assailant. his family and friends all describe him as a religious man.

muni is working on repairs after a day-long meltdown because of a mechanical failure. it caused major delays for riders during the busy commute hours. abc 7 news reporter luz pena explains. >> reporter: it's been one thing after another for muni, causing a manpower shortage to equipment failure, muni riders say they are glad the week is over. >> i got on it and did not move for a while, got off it. >> the problem started when an overhead wire failed and the train ended pulling down a thousand feet of wire and hardware. >> downed overheadlines in the subway between powel and civic center stations and immediately we stopped subway service and ran bus shuttles. >> sky 7 got footage of dozens of muni riders waiting for the shuttle. >> this shuttle was the best next option for everyone stuck. we are here with -- >> rosa. i live inids tt were still

city was last seen in a red toyota camry. searchers did find parts from a camry, but no car or driver. >> in the east bay, for the second weekend in a row, oakland police are promising to crack down on illegal sideshows. opd said they'll be dedicating a large contingency of officers specifically for sideshows. they're promising to issue citations, make arrests and tow vehicles. last weekend resulted in resulted in no sideshows. >> the oakland police department and the city of oakland, we are not going to tolerate illegal sideshow activity. it takes away the quality of life and impacts on such a negative level. >> this comes after a sideshow on april 14th during which a delivery driver was held at gun point and set his truck on fire. his truck was set on fire. an ac transit bus was also set on fire. there was also a sideshow the weekend prior, but it was mostly disruptive and not violent.

new details now in a wildfire that ravaged lake county. cal fire says the ponte fire was sparked by target shooting and the fire broke out june 24th and it burned 15,000 acres. the lake county record reports the cases is now in the hand of the district attorney's office and it is not clear if someone will face criminal charges for igniting the fire. uc berkeley offered free measles vaccination to prevent an outbreak. this from 1,000 students and staff from two southern california universities have been ordered to stay home. officials at ucla and cal-state los angeles are working to identify people who may have been exposed to the highly contagious disease. a student from ucla and csula have come down with measles. 8:08 the time and we are off it a partly cloudy start around the bay area. >> making for pretty pictures and the low clouds and a bit breezy at time and the

(cell phone vibrating) and now she's ready for the catwalk. life, lived jason's way. chase. make more of what's yours. it's been two months since the russian river flood. today the town of guerneville i event and a much-needed veent c people there have been going through. abc 7 news wayne friedman has the story. >> welcome back to guerneville, at least for us. two weeks, two months ago, covering well, maybe the third or fourth largest flood ever in this place. estimates are it cost roughly $150 million in property damage, and another $25 million to infrastructure. this is the truck where we spent

most of the two weeks and doing stories in the back of the bay area and talking to a lot of people. >> it was shocking. it was more than i was expecting. >> that's lisa flint. she and her husband jason own and are still repairing the farm hand deli. >> you had a thing where you were selling gift certificates. >> right. >> you didn't want to take a handout. did it work? >> it did. it did. we sold a little over helutit construction costs and different things that we needed. >> okay. to give you an idea of how high the water was rethink the sign. of course, on the day of the flood the river was in jason. >> yes? >> you broke into tears a lot of times when we talked to you initially. >> yeah. >> are you past that now? >> sometimes. >> sometimes. >> yeah. >> are you more encouraged than you were? >> no. absolutely. we've come a long way and we've had a lot of help and yeah, it's good.

>> hopefully in two weeks you open up. >> that's the hope. >> no more water. >> no more water, please. >> back in the satellite truck. going into town on river road which is also just a name until we pass through here during the flood and then we realize that river road truly had become part of the russian river. >> the last time we came we were on the back of a national guard truck and we were making way more, and if you had a board you could have surfed on it and all ofater during the flood. no way in, no way out. guerneville was an island. i'm going to make a left turn here on millmill strt down from level. so the water came up off of the river, crested over river road and down into mill's creek. the last time i went this route on mill street was in the canoe and people were stuck in their houses. >> all these months later, what

inconvenience. we've done this before. anything can be replaced and anything can be fixed. >> minor inconvenience. >> the russian river two months riheod it was almost 46 feet, way over our head and moving a lot faster than where we're standing. the river gives, the river takes. this weekend in guerneville they'll have a spring fling festival. they do it every year and it's from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and put on by the chamber of commerce and they want to celebrate that guerneville is coming back 1:00 to 4:00 and you can come out and take a look at this beautiful river. >> we're a resilient folk up here. >> did you ever give up? >> no. definitely not. we are here every single day. >> so we see a lot in the guerneville region today and we looked at businesses and talked to their owners and we see where the waters were and where the waters have disappeared from and we talk about this big weekend

three times they did suggest you make it to the bathroom if you want to risk it when the san francisco title card comes on the screen and when the new jersey title card comes on the screen and also when the hulk eats lunch. abc 7 news. marvel is owned by disney which is the parent company of abc 7. all right. our time is 8:19 and weather wise, a slight cooldown. meteorologist lisa argen has the forecast to help you plan out your weekend. >> that's right. today is the warmer day and a couple of 80s and the fog footprint along the san mateo coast and it looks hazy here and plenty of sunshine and it's 54 in san francisco and 55 in oakland and 56 for you and mid-50s in san jose and morgan hill, 52, and 54, half moon bay and the fog filling in here and we'll get to that breezy wind in the afternoon like you've experienced in mill valley and sausalito. the past couple of days and 49

santa rosa with fog. napa had fog at 54. concord, you've been breezy at 58 and livermore fog out toward mount diablo and 55 there and by the delta, breezy southwest winds and that indicates it will be cooler as the sea breeze will be transported and the marine layer has grown taller overnight and tahoe valley airport, actually about 60 and the temperatures will slide throughout the workweek in the mountain, so morning, coastal clouds and we'll see breezy and bright conditions to start next week. so if you're looking for heat, we're not going to get any. in fact, we're looking at partial sun early and then we'll get into more sun, but temperatures will be chilly from 58 half moon bay, bodega bay, that's about typical, 59 degrees and san jose, 79 today and it's above average and wooe been used to some of that extreme heat, but as we get through the middle of the week, numbers will come

down, but still not near the average of 71 until tuesday in parts of the south bay and we will manage a few more degrees wednesday and thursday warming up a bit and cooler next friday. 80 in los gatos and on the peninsula, low clouds and fog, 72 menlo park and the hills there, san francisco. pretty sdmies you'll definitely need the jacket as well as vallejo and for the east bay, high clouds and 70s in berkeley. 77 in newark and you head inland and still a couple of 80s and a beautiful day in san am ropp and san francisco headed home with the yankees games asks west wins up the accuweather seven-day

hundreds of people gathered in san francisco last night to make a profound difference in the lives of young people. the annual big brothers big sisters gala took place at the fair mount hotel. the organization matches young people with caring adults who serve as mentors. dan ashley emceed the event which featured speakers who talked about how big brothers and big sisters changed their lives for the better. take a look. this fluffy-looking kitten endured a trip from salinas to sacramento's arden fair mall. the kitten rode in the engine compartment of a ford fusion and loud meowing was heard in the

good morning, east bay. let's get up and get going. this is abc 7 mornings. thanks so much for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyen. we're looking ahead to a cooler day across the bay. meteorologist lisa argen is tracking the accuweather forecast. hi, lisa. >> you can see the flag blowing here downtown san francisco and we have a system allowing for the breezy winds to continue and the low clouds and fog to kind of hug the shoreline for the morning hours. 56 in oakland and 55 in san jose. temperatures aren't bad and we are getting some sun downtown and it will be partly cloudy and numbers in the lower 60s this afternoon. if you're headed into san francisco, 58 in concord and some of the warmer locations could make it into the 80s and we're trimming back the temperatures from 3 to 5 degrees and this is why the low cloud

deck and you can see it from mount tam and numbers will climb in the 60s and inland by noon time topping off into the low 80s and later today in the inland valley and 70 at the coast and pretty chilly at the shoreline. we will talk about your sunday which is trending cooler in a few minutes. chris? >> lisa, thank you. a mother and her child are okay after a car struck their stroller throwing the toddler to the ground. abc 7 news reporter leann melendez spoke to the driver who explained what happened and what he did to help. >> i was coming up clairedon going to city college in san francisco. >> reporter: what happened next could have been a lot worse. this van was making a left-hand turn on clairedon avenue when a driver noticed a mother and the baby and the stroller. she made eye contacter who smeto e problem. >> she thought it would be okay to cross the intersection as there was no one there, but she.

>> reporter: that's miles ditman, the driver of a blue merceders who was broad sided and the impact pushed his car into the streeloller in it withe baby in it. >> i was the first 911 caller. >> christine heard the crash. ditman explained what happened next. >> as i got out of the car the baby was lying kind of on the side of the stroller because the stroller was tipped over. i immediately picked her up and made sure the baby was okay and saw no bleeding or bruising and the baby was fine. she could move the neck. >> reporter: ditman is studying to be a paramedic and the mother was not hit, but was on the ground. ditman brought the baby to her. >> then the baby started to cry because it's kind of a mother/daughter/son instinct when you see your mom crying you know something's wrong. i'm familiar with this area and know that clairedon avenue is

not like many streets in san francisco. >> for example, few cars ever follow the 35 mile an hour speed limit and despite having a school there, there's only one traffic light. and we drove the entire length of clairedon, not a single stop sign. linenbalk lives nearby and knows how dangerous this street can be. >> where was the baby? >> right here. >> the mom and baby were right here. >> okay. and on the ground. both appeared to be okay. it was a close call for everyone involved. >> leann melendez, abc 7 news. >> bart riders will face delays this weekend and there will be no service between the concord and pleasant hill contra costa center stations today and tomorrow so crews can replace the aging track. bart is offering free bus service between those stations and riders should expect to add 20 minutes to the normal time of the planned trip to their area and there will be similar closures on memorial day weekend

and in early june. happening today, police san francisco will join an organization for a gun buyback event. brother against guns will help make the streets safer. $100 will be offered for pistol, shotguns and rifles and their $200 will be run from 9:00 until noon at oakdale avenue and third street. happening today, check your medicine cabinets for old prescription drugs to make sure they don't end up in the wrong hands. today is national prescription drug takeback day. many bay area law enforcement agencies are taking part. all medications will be accepted. from 10:00 until 2:00 today take your pills to the local police station or sheriff's office. >> time right now is 8:33. we're all connected to the ocean. when something in it starts to make the marine life sick, it

means we are also at risk. the marine mammal center in marin county has ocean conservation through marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation. here's the look at the scientific research center. ♪ >> in a given year we can rescue between 700 and close to 2,000 patients. right now we've got close to 85 baby elephant seals. >> we wish that they had stayed with their mothers for 28 days and gotten big and fat, and then the morgue goes off into the ocean and then they learn how to swim and how to feed themselves in the shallow waters and somehow they got separated from their mother and they come to us because they don't know how to feed and they don't know how to swim. my name is nancy and i work in the kitchen. i am genuinely responsible for the fish and the hand feeds and picky eaters. oh, yes. we have picky eaters and almost every elephant seal that comes in. i do wash dishes here than i

could ever possibly do at home. we have elephant seal progression. it's a technique of introducing them to fish and helping them understand how to eat it. >> the elephant seals that you hear in the background, they're actually born at about 75 pounds and after one month they should be 300 pounds and most of the animals we have here are probably a hundred pounds or less. when you get them excited about food in the water. all of them begin to flair forward like an angry porcupine. before we get them to eat fish on their own we sometimes have to tube feed them. we take fish and grind it up into a fish shake. we might add vitamins and meds and salmon oil for calories and we're going to go into the pen and the tuber will place a tube gently into their mouth until it gets to their stomach. >> it's a process. some are quicker than others to learn. some of them are real slow. we just work with them and they

coast and the afternoon sea breeze and then the clouds again, clinging to the shoreline throughout the overnight hours and from mount tam it looks pretty nice and it will be a beautiful day out there, but if you're spending time at our bay area beach e you know the drill and it will be chilly and we have the afternoon sea breeze and the ebb and flow of that and a lot of sunshine into next week, but the absence of heat. you can see the flag blowing behind me here where we will have that wind today in the city up to 20 miles an hour for the giants game. plenty of sun, but boy, we certainly have lost the heat. we got a little spoiled there, but as is typical around here, we will dictate our temperatures with the marine layer and how tall it grows and the afternoon sea breeze and we'll have 1500 feet this morning and it caused a few visibility problems in the north bay and certainly gray here along the central coast and salinas and a few peeks of sun and not that warm out there at

happening today, another sign that it's spring. it's three east bay swimming facilities and lake anza, contra loma regional park and shadow creek recreational area all open today. it does cost a few dollars per person to access the beach at all three locations. lifeguards are on duty all weekend long. you might want to bring a jacket if you'll swim outside today. >> i would think that would be cold, but that's why they're in the east bay and they have the warm weather, right? >> right now we're looking at a pretty shot from the north bay, mount tam. there is certainly fog out there and the afternoon sea breeze and the morning clouds are evaporating and the cooling trend through the weekend and
