live from where you live, this is abc7 news. >> on alert. will you see police presence at san francisco synagogues after a deadly shooting at a temple in san diego. thank you for joining us. >> we begin with the developing news on that attack. it happened this morning in poway, about 10 miles outside san diego during a gathering for the last day of passover. >> a young man is in custody. abc news reporter natalie brenle has an update.

>> reporter: a passover prayer service at the chabad synagogue near san diego interrupted by a string of gunfire. >> we were outside in front of our house and heard about six gunshots, pause and yelling and another six or seven gunshots. >> reporter: authorities say a 19-year-old gunman armed with an assault-style weapon began shooting around 11:30 a.m. striking about four people. he fled the scene but was arrested minutes later. >> as our officer was exiting the freeway, he clearly saw the suspect in his vehicle. the suspect pulled over, jumped out of his car with his hands up and immediately taken into custody. >> we have a couple loaded round mags inside the vehicle. >> reporter: authorities say one woman died and other three victims are in stable condition including a young girl and rabbi leading the worship. witnesses say even after he was shot, he continued to try to calm the congregation and the gunman. heart breaking reaction pouring

in, including congressman scott peters, today marks six months of the tragedy at the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh. enough. >> my deepest sympathies go to the people affected, the families, the loved ones. it looks like a hate crime. >> reporter: while authorities comb through the evidence and look into the shoot shooter's identity, the mayor of poway saying they will make it through the tragedy. >> this is not the poway i know. the poway i know came together a few weeks ago at an interfaith event and we will walk with arms around each other through this tragedy as well. three murders in the bay area all linked to one man. people who know him tell abc7 news they know what set him off. we have new details now from the newsroom. >> reporter: stefon jefferson is accused of killing a family member in oakland and someone in

san francisco and berkeley, all about a shooting with deputies in nevada. tonight there are multiple families devastated across the bay area and one said a property dispute may have started all of this. >> help me call him -- >> jesus. >> reporter: they're calling on help to make sense of three murders and shootout. >> i'm asking you to comfort this man. >> reporter: there's a heart broken brother, candles and flowers where le'ron davis was gunned down outside a bay view housing complex. police say 43-year-old stefon jefferson was the shooter. >> this was his job. he was on the job, taking the garbage out and came right here and the guy shot him and everything. >> reporter: davis lived and worked at the complex and one victim of a shooting spree stretching across the bay. >> lou got nothing but love, big lou. i love him from the heart. i raised him. >> reporter: police say earlier

friday morning jefferson killed a family member in oakland, i.d.'d as lamar jackson. according to a family friend there was a dispute over property owned by jackson over o at the friday's shooting. he than ran north where he ran into deputies in south lake, tahoe, and crossed into nevada. >> so he shot at us went shot at him. that's as simple as it gets. >> reporter: after a chase jefferson crashed his car and was arrested. back in the bay police are considering him a suspect in a homicide friday. that has left people who know the suspect stunned. >> you have to break the cycle. >> reporter: jefferson is being held at the douglas county jail in nevada. the suspect is in the hospital but expected to make a full recovery. j >>thank you very much. some people felt a little shaking this morning in the bay area. magnitude 3.4 earthquake hit at about 2:38 a.m.

this usgs map indicates the location on the map with a star. the quake was centered west of concorde. some people in sflan francisco d pacifica report the waiting up from the jolt. there's no reported damages or injuries. we're getting a clearer picture of the state's wildfire danger after new reports that say several california communities don't have wildfire evacuation routes. they looked at conditions people in paradise found themselves in trying to escape the campfire last year. 27,000 residents were caught in a nightmare traffic jam trying to get out of town. "usa today" also found 53,000 californians live in areas similar to paradise. those areas have the same number of fire escape lanes. and communities are under high wildfire risk. many are located in the california foot hills, suburban pockets of southern california and mountains of northern california. meanwhile the battle against

dwev stating wildfires in los angeles county was hampered by politicians asking firefighters it check on certain homes, according to "the l.a. times." this says a significant number of requests to check on specific homes distracted the department from priority objectives. the fire killed four people and destroyed more than 1,600 homes and other buildings from north of l.a. to malibu. you may see more officers on the streets this weekend in oakland where the police department is pledging to crack down on sideshows. opd said they will be dedicating a large contingent of officers specifically to side shows for the second weekend in a row. enforcement teams will be on patrol day and night. they tweeted a video of a similar effort last weekend and no side shows. this comes after a side show april 14th during which a delivery guy was held at gunpoint and his truck set on

fire. neighbors showed up in force to help revitalize a school target the by vandals earlier this month. family, students, faculties and neighbors helped out at the school. today's gathering was not just about spiffying up the campus, it was all about empowering students and connecting the families with vital local resources. >> we have a lot of community partners out. alameda food bank is giving away 200 bags of food, we have run for a better oakland, educating kids about running and doing exercises. it's a great community event. >> yeah, lots going on. the school suffered major damage over spring break when vandals broke windows, covered walls in paint and destroyed computers. new details on the college admission scandal. families from china are accused of paying the most to get their children into schools. one chinese family accused of paying the skeems master mind rick singer $6.5 million to get their child into a leading school. that's what the source told abc

a lawyer will be reviewing elon musk's tweets as part of an agreement tesla's ceo made with security regulators. the details filed yesterday means musk would no longer face the threat of being held in contempt. the sec claimed musk violated a previous settlement when he tweeted tesla would produce about 500,000 vehicles a year. musk is now required to get approval in advance from the security's lawyer, employed by tessa, before he tweets out about a range of financial topics. a judge needs to sign off on the agreement. tonight the final dinners will be served at the iconic jareder in restaurant in san francisco. owner desjardin sites changes including the role of social media and customer expectations for shuttering the restaurant. she said she evolved and just prefers creating casual comfort food. the restaurant said they would work hard to make sure all staff

members find a place to help. they opened 21 years ago. napa valley will sell a farm to earn money for a zamt site to provide hands-on lectures for agriculture and sciences at a local high school. napa valley reports a nine-acre farm will replace the old one and is closer to campus. the old site should fetch around $9.5 million for the district. as many as 67 single family homes could be built on that site. you're about to see a rare sight, at least that's what a marine biologicalist tells us, killer whales playing with their food. monterey whale watch shared the video that shows orcas tossing salmon and teaching the calf to hunt by practicing with the birds. experts say it's very unusual to say killer whales do this for so long. orcas don't follow a predictable seasonal migration pattern. they tend to go where the food is. >> i feel kind of bad for that

firefighting efforts in the deadly woolsey fired. emergency responder had to check on so many political figure's addresses they were not able to focus on putting out the fire. "the times" cites an after-action review from the l.a. fire calling the requests a distraction. l.a. fire responded today saying the requests did not interfere with protecting lives or properties. the claims upset malibu's mayor whose home burned down in the woolsey fire. >> it would be sad if somebody put their position above the general population. so my feeling would be shouldn't be doing that. and if you did, shame on you. my situation was different. i lost my home and i was hospitalized during the event. >> the fire killed at least four people and destroyed more than 1,600 structures. ready for a little adventure? there's a warning for those thinking of hitting the water. and the accuweather forecast is next.

by selecting pairy view defensive end quentin bell. bryce young was the 112th overall pick, former heisman trophy runner-up definitely fell in the draft tearing his acl back in december. he's also battled several ankle injuries but when he's healthy, look out. back in 2017 he ran for more than 2,000 yards with the cardinals. his explosive speed will be an asset in the national football league. the san jose earthquakes were on the road taking on fc dallas. this match was all about the keepers. daniel vega made four big saves, including this one in the first half. but san jose could not get past jose luis gonzalez. christian espa dosia there gets knocked away with one hand. this match would end in a scoreless draw. there's drama in the nba tonight. the spurs and denver nuggets are playing a game seven. we'll have highlights tonight on the news at 11:00. getting back to bryce love, hopefully he's healthy and all of the injury problems are behind him.
