wounded. among those hurt a rabbi and a young girl. >> reporter amy powell from our sister station in los angeles has traveled to poway where the synagogue is located. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: community members joining together for a candle light vigil, a show of unity hours after a deadly shooting inside the chabad of poway. >> and on a religious day like we have today which is shabbat and the end of pass over which is a very religious day and it was totally targeted. i don't get it. it's very upsetting. >> reporter: family and other worshippers were attending a last pass over day when the gunman entered this morning armed with an ar-type assault rifle. >> he came in cursing. >> i heard six or seven gunshots, there was a pause, a

male voice yelling and another six or seven shots. >> reporter: a girl and 34-year-old man were hospitalized with injuries caused by shrapnel. the synagogue's rabbi, 57-year-old israel goldstein who is also a police chaplain, was wounded during the attack. he reportedly tried to calm the gunman. >> i'm sure he kept his cool. i'm sure he was very strong. he's a very strong person and he built this community since the early '80s. >> reporter: the suspect fled but a short time later called police and told them he was involved in a shooting at a synagogue. an officer rushing to the scene spotted his vehicle. earnst then pulled over and surrendered. >> a san diego resident had no prior arrest records in san diego. we are aware of his manifesto which we are in the process of reviewing to determine its validity and authenticity. >> reporter: authorities are going over an open letter written by earnst and his posts on social media as they investigate the attack. >> it was hate in its purest

governor newsome said an attack against our community is an attack on our entire state, who we are and what we stand for. our country has to be better than this. and tonight president trump called governor newsome to express his condolences. in san francisco, lisa amin galesian, abc7 news. >> appreciate it, lisa. this comes six months to the day 11 people were killed at the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. residents gathered for a vigil to mark the anniversary and show solidarity with san diego. a man was arrested and facing hate crime charges. in part, this must stop. we know the first anguish and healing process such atrocity causes. an with the afflicted san diego and their congregation. >> our entire nation mourns the

a 13-year-old girl in critical condition and injured 7 others. they found evidence people may have targeted the people because of race and thought they were muslim. he is expected in court may 16. >> a suspect arrested friday in nevada and his booking photo in connection to two bay area shootings is now the suspect of a third shooting on that same day. take a look. >> there is that booking photo. abc7 news reporter luz pena has the latest on this developing story. luz? >> reporter: yeah, we're learning more details about the suspect and what happened on friday. the suspect is 43-year-old stephane jefferson. he is under arrest after a shootout with deputies. he started in the bay area where his first victim was a family member. the murder spree began on friday around 10:15 a.m. in oakland when stephane jefferson shot and killed 57-year-old marcus jackson, a victim's family friend we spoke to said jackson and jefferson are related. he also said the suspect committed the crime right outside of his mother's house.

off camera jefferson's mom said she's grieving. >> that gun, they caught him. he can do it for you. >> reporter: several hours later at 1:27 p.m., police say jefferson drove to san francisc davis. >> he was on the job, taking the garbage out or whatever and he came right here. and the guy shot him. >> reporter: police connect the the oakland and san francisco shootings to jefferson on friday. berkeley say said the they are considering jefferson the main shooter in the homicide. that third shooting took place 2:40 p.m. >> he said something like, we're not cool any more, huh? and, bam. >> reporter: steven said he had seen jefferson before. >> i recognized him. inknew he was the guy that came in the park before. put the gun in his pocket. goes to the car with it double parked on the street and drives off. >> reporter: an alert was sent

a towering crane constructing a new google building in seattle's southlake union neighborhood came crashing down to street level this afternoon killing four people. pieces of the crane smashed into six cars, two people in two separate cars were killed by the impact. two workers in the crane also died. four others suffered non-life-threatening injuries. one witness heard the commotion and saw people running from the scene after the collapse. >> that could have been me because i was going to go to the grocery store and i normally go to qfc. i would have gone that way and that could have happened to me. >> the google project is one of seattle's largest developments. the building under construction suffered major damage when other pieces of the crane landed on the roof of the complex. washington state investigators

today's march. >> time now for a check on the weather forecast. did we see a little fog today? did you see it? >> a little fog, but sunny blue skies. at least for where amanda was. what about the rest of the bay area, drew? >> the fog is in, rolling in across the region. it will lead to a cooler day to finish out the weekend tomorrow. live doppler 7 tonight, the sweep across the region, no precipitation to be found tonight, but overcast, guys, the foggy look in san francisco, live exploratorium camera showing a deck of cover overhead. as the fog rolled in earlier today, it quickly cooled us off after daytime highs in the 60s and in the 70s. so we take a look at current temperatures out there right now. widespread 50s no matter where you live. 55 in san jose, 5ci napa right now is cooling off in the north bay. current temperature of 52 degrees. as that fog continues to thicken tonight, it is create something visibility issues. take a look at the visibility right now in terms of miles, and especially along the coast line.

half moon bay, visibility down to 4 miles. the fog is becoming dense in some spots. in the north bay visibility down to 6 miles where you see the number 10. that's as good as it gets. it looks like the south bay will be free of the fog tonight, but the east bay, you're going to be dealing with patchy fog first thing tomorrow morning. live doppler 7 along with satellite, here's the reason why we got a cooler weekend on the way. we have an area of low pressure just off to our south and to our west. it brought high clouds streaming in from time to time, but it's also deepening our marine layer at this hour. that's why tomorrow morning we're starting out the day with some fog. so the fog forecast first thing in the morning will stop the clock at 7:00 in the morning and you can see the north bay, the east bay over san francisco, along the coast of the peninsula and stretching through the delta will have that fog. but it's a quickly evaporating event. by 10:00 in the morning that fog is out of here and it's pulling way back to the coast line. so overnight tonight we have that fog overhead, dense in some spots. if you're out and about early tomorrow morning, especially in

>> good evening. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. in tonight's headlines, a suspect is in custody tonight calling 911 and turning himself in after a shooting at a san diego area synagogue. 19-year-old john earnst is accused of killing a woman and wounding three others including a rabbi and young girl. earnst had no criminal record and made the dean's list at cal state san marcos. here in the bay area, police have sent out extra patrols to monitor synagogues. >> the fbi has opened a federal hate crime investigation into tuesday's crash in sunnyvale. 34-year-old isaiah peoples is accused of crashing into eight people on purpose. a 13-year-old girl is in critical condition, seven others were hurt. police say they found evidence that peoples may have targeted the victims based on their race and the belief that they were muslim. >> a suspect arrested friday in nevada in connection to two bay area shootings is now the suspect of a third shooting that same day. 43-year-old stephane jefferson is accused of shooting a family

requests may have hampered fire fighting efforts in the deadly woolzly fire. they had to check on so many political homes they couldn't investigate the fire. they are calling the request a distraction. l.a. fire responded today saying the requests did not interfere with protecting lives or property. the claims upset malibu's mayor whose home burned down in the fire. >> it would be sad if somebody put their position above the general population, so my feeling would be you shouldn't be doing that. and if you did, shame on you. my situation was different. i lost my home and i was hospitalized during the event. >> the woolsey fire killed at least four people and destroyed more than 1600 structures. >> a manhunt is on after an uber passenger was shot to death by a fellow passenger. this happened in houston

yesterday after the driver picked up the two men at an intersection. it's not clear if the victim and the shooter knew one another. the driver went about a mile before pulling over in a parking lot to call 911. >> as he picked up one individual, the individual sat in the rear passenger side of the suv while a second companion to that individual came around the driver's side around the back. and immediately began open fire into the back seat where his companion was and shot him. >> the uber driver was not hurt. the rideshare company has not commented on the shooting. >> hundreds of people remained quarantined in southern california over concerns they were exposed to measles. the focus is on the university of california, los angeles and cal state los angeles campuses. the number has spiked dramatically at the cal state campus with over 650 students and staff being quarantined. meantime, that number has dropped to under 50 at ucla. so far there are five confirmed

cases of measles in los angeles county. and earlier this week, u.c. berkeley encouraged its students to get vaccinated. >> new details now at the college adds mission scandal. families from china are accused of paying the most to get their children into schools. they paid rick singer 6 1/2 million dollars to get their child into a leading school. that's what the source told abc news confirming an earlier report in the "wall street journal." it is by far the largest payment known to date among dozens of parents, some from the bay area. court documents show another chinese students family paid $1.2 million to get her into yale university. 50 people are now facing charges. >> hundreds of guns are off the streets of san francisco afty cy according to the group brothers against guns, 25 guns were traded in within the first 30 minutes. and that includes an m-16 rifle. one person brought in 14 guns in total. the group teamed up with police and grace cathedral to hold that

event. $100 cash was offered for handguns, $200 was given for rifles and assault weapons. >> people dropped off prescription drugs, no questions asked. abc7 news was in alameda where one site was open from 10:00 to 2:00 today. the goal was to get rid of unused and unwanted prescription medication without throwing them away. getting ritd of the extra pills can prevent abuse or dangerous use of expired medication. it also prevents the medication from harming the environment. >> a lot of folks were taking their prescription medication and just flushing it down the toilet, or putting it into the garbage and it was going out to the land fills, which was a big issue. >> if you missed your today, there are drop-off sites open year round. >> napa valley unified will sell a unique district-owned teaching farm to raise money to fund a replacement site.

incredible moments caught on camera. two young children escaping during an apparent carjack being. take a look. this surveillance video captured the harrowing moments when the kids escaped from that moving car. all the while, their great grandmother chasing the driver down to save them. 69-year-old nita coburn said she had gotten out of the car to briefly help a relative inside a cincinnati hospital. that's when a young man jumped in and sped off with the 8 and 10-year-olds in the back seat. >> i heard them screaming and i ran to the car. i ran to the driver's side because i knew my grand babies were in that car. >> it got over my sister.

washington selected bryce love in the fourth round with the 112th overall selection. the runner up found the draft due to tearing his acl in december. he battled several ankle injuries. but when he was healthy, wow, look out. back in 2017, he ran for more than 2000 yards with the cardinal. his explosive speed will be an asset in the nfl. giants hosting the injury depleted new york yankees. one guy who is not hurt is catcher derek sanchez. h wit gndlaend p ie that made it 6-0 yankees. they come alive in the bottom half of the 9th inning. a three-run homer. all of a sudden we have a 6-4 ball game. too little, too late. pablo sandoval goes down looking. that's your ball game. yankees survive 6-4 your final.

a's in the north are north of the border taking on the blue jays. rough outing for brett anderson who gives up six runs. two coming in the first. should have been an ending double play. the throw was off the mark. 2-0 blue jays. the a's only run coming in similar fashion in the 5th inning. nick hundley grounds into what should be a double play. instead first base man justin smoke can't make the grab. so that allows ramon laureano to score. that was it for the a's. the jays would score 7 on the day. a pair of r.b.i. from that swing. toronto continues to dominate oakland. 5-0 against the a's this year. the final score 7-1. san joseques wer oth th mas about the keepers. the quakes made four big saves including this one in the first half. but san jose could not get the ball past jose luis gonzalez. espinosa cuts inside. look at that, the one handed save. this match ends in a scoreless
