a peaceful end to passover shattered by gunfire. >> i was centimeters away from death. literally. >> reporter: a shooter stormed this san diego synagogue killing one and injuring three others. >> i turn around and i see the shooter standing there in position with the rifle moving it towards me. >> reporter: witnesses say he didn't speak only shot. >> i flipped the table and started yelling like crazy run away in engliss. wn and covering her with my body and telling her please be quiet. please be quiet. i don't want the shooter to know that we're here. >> reporter: the violence only ending when the suspect's assault rifle reportedly jammed. >> i heard the gunshots. everybody ran out. i jumped up and i ran to the lobby. >> reporter: oscar stewart who was ex-military chased the shooter out of the synagogue

while an off-duty border patrol officer used a gun from a fellow worshiper to fire at earnest as he drove off. >> i ran up to him and i yelled at him and he dropped his weapon and he ran out and i chased him out of the sanctuary. >> reporter: just minutes after earnest fled the scene. >> we've got an ar-15. >> reporter: police would find him a mile away in his car with the assault rifle he purchased one day before the attack. earnest was arrested without incident but the damage already done. >> i saw lori laying on the floor unconscious. >> reporter: 60-year-old lori gilbert was killed in the melee. rabbi goldstein was shot in both hands while one of the other victims, almog peretz was shot in the leg as he shielded children from the gunfire. >> people cry, screaming, run, but i focus on the kids. >> reporter: overnight president trump calling rabbi goldstein to share his condolences and comfort the victims of the senseless crime.

into his appeal for blue collar workers. biden's campaign says his message will focus on, quote, his plan to build a middle class where everyone comes along. janai. >> all right, serena marshall in washington. thank you. and joe biden and his wife dr. jill biden will sit down for an exclusive interview with robin roberts on "gma" tomorrow. for the second time in less than two week, new york's kennedy airport has been hit with a measles scare. a jetblue flight from the dominican republic was secured amid concerns a passenger was infected. a few weeks ago, el al airlines was concerned a flight attendant contracted measles at jfk. yesterday's scare comes as the cdc is set to release updated national numbers today. u.s. cases are already at a 25-year high. baltimore police are looking for at least one gunman that brought violence to two cookouts. detectives say someone started firing indiscriminately into the events which were across the street from one another.

ever brought down in a controlled implosion. the property owners are expected to turn the site into a facility that supports wind farms. good news this morning, crews have rescued five men trapped in a virginia cave for nearly 47 hours. there was little time to spare as the men were suffering from hypothermia and fatigue. also conditions in the cave were deteriorating. the men planned an overnight stay but heavy rain made it difficult for them to climb out. one escaped sunday morning and quickly alerted authorities. all were taken to the hospital. >> one of the biggest problems that we had was that they were exhausted and experiencing mild hypothermia, and as that exhaustion and the hypothermia progressed, they're going to run into more and more problems with having the energy to move and get out of the cave on their own. >> the men range in ages from 34 to 59. the cave is popular with explorers because of its tight crevices and drop. actress, lori loughlin and her husband and more than a dozen other plants are expected to plead not guilty today

that's a blessing and -- but the next two cars behind, it's sad. >> reporter: autti s t op sitting in their cars and two workers inside the crane were killed. >> my heart breaks for the families that have lost someone today. >> reporter: the construction company that owns the crane confirming that workers were dismantling the crane right before it came down. the national weather service says a line of showers moved through the area at the time with winds gusting up to 23 miles per hour. this eyewitness video shows the crane appearing to tilt in the wind. >> it became really, really strong wind right around that time is when we heard the crash. >> reporter: officials say the investigation into the cause of the accident could take months to complete. we reached out to that construction company to find out if their workers should have eastern been up there dismantling the crane in the first place given those dangerous weather conditions and tell us the investigation continues still on site and it is too early to speculate. maggie rulli, abc news, seattle. >> our thanks to maggie.

anser hassan is there. >> reporter: i spoke to police a little bit ago. they said they won't have an update until 7:00 a.m. fires have been out, minimal damage. it seems to have happened near the entrance. you can see burn marks on the ground. possible damage to the window. some video from earlier. the call came in to police around 10:00 p.m. last night. the fire was quickly put out but investigators remained on scene for a few hours afterwards. there's no main damage to the building or surrounding businesses. one witness who didn't want to be identified said he saw someone light the fire and then took off running. >> saw someone put something down and run away a. few seconds later the flames went up in the air and got bigger and bigger. i called 911. by the time they got here, it died out on its own basically. >> reporter: now police wouldn't give us any details about any suspect or suspects or if anybody was taken into custody. we have been told there are no

reports of any injuries. reporting live in daly city, anser hassan, abc 7 news. it is 4:30. if you're just waking up, good morning. a quick update on weather and traffic. we start with mike. i want to start with the winds on live doppler 7. you can see full on onshore wind. 22-mile-per-hour wind at fairfield and look at the cloud cover. just about all of us starting off gray. a little bit of mist out there possible near the coast in our higher elevations. the fog is pretty high or the low clouds are high as you can see from sutro tower this morning. 46 to 53 degrees. we'll keep an eye to see if there's any fog. our lowest visibility is about 5 miles. mid to upper 50s at the coast. near 70 at 4:00
