a peaceful end to passover shattered by gunfire. >> i was centimeters away from death. literally. >> reporter: a shooter stormed this san diego synagogue killing one and injuring three others. >> i turn around and i see the shooter standing there in position with the rifle moving it towards me. >> reporter: witnesses say he didn't speak only shot. >> i flipped the table and started yelling like crazy run away in engliss. wn and covering her with my body and telling her please be quiet. please be quiet. i don't want the shooter to know that we're here. >> reporter: the violence only ending when the suspect's assault rifle reportedly jammed. >> i heard the gunshots. everybody ran out. i jumped up and i ran to the lobby. >> reporter: oscar stewart who was ex-military chased the shooter out of the synagogue

while an off-duty border patrol officer used a gun from a fellow worshiper to fire at earnest as he drove off. >> i ran up to him and i yelled at him and he dropped his weapon and he ran out and i chased him out of the sanctuary. >> reporter: just minutes after earnest fled the scene. >> we've got an ar-15. >> reporter: police would find him a mile away in his car with the assault rifle he purchased one day before the attack. earnest was arrested without incident but the damage already done. >> i saw lori laying on the floor unconscious. >> reporter: 60-year-old lori gilbert was killed in the melee. rabbi goldstein was shot in both hands while one of the other victims, almog peretz was shot in the leg as he shielded children from the gunfire. >> people cry, screaming, run, but i focus on the kids. >> reporter: overnight president trump calling rabbi goldstein to share his condolences and comfort the victims of the senseless crime.

ever brought down in a controlled implosion. the property owners are expected to turn the site into a facility that supports wind farms. good news this morning, crews have rescued five men trapped in a virginia cave for nearly 47 hours. there was little time to spare as the men were suffering from hypothermia and fatigue. also conditions in the cave were deteriorating. the men planned an overnight stay but heavy rain made it difficult for them to climb out. one escaped sunday morning and quickly alerted authorities. all were taken to the hospital. >> one of the biggest problems that we had was that they were exhausted and experiencing mild hypothermia, and as that exhaustion and the hypothermia progressed, they're going to run into more and more problems with having the energy to move and get out of the cave on their own. >> the men range in ages from 34 to 59. the cave is popular with explorers because of its tight crevices and drop. actress, lori loughlin and her husband and more than a dozen other plants are expected to plead not guilty today
