via email announcing his resignation, muni's top transit official explained the employment agreement i have with the sfmta's board of directors ends in august, and it becomes clear this is the right time for a change. hours later, the mayor of san francisco, london breed, responded. >> we're looking for someone who understands the bigger picture. it's not just one thing that this department represents. we need a real transportation expert who understands the complexities of what it means to run a major transit system. >> breed sent out a letter to the board of directors reque requesting an immediate search for a new director. dur she referred to a month-long list of problems with muni, equipment failures that led to a day of delays and operators refusing to work overtime. >> challenging time over the past couple of months for our muni riders, for our system, and i do think it's important that

the wild crossed paths briefly. mountain lions roam all across california. roughly you'll find four for every 100 square miles. so the question is how did this mountain lion get into santa rosa? simple. they think it wandered in through santa rosa creek. in santa rosa, wayne freedman, abc7. >> oh, follow the creek. that makes sense. wayne, thank you. all right. let's talk some numbers. state officials say as many as 6,000 mountain lions roam california. they're also known as cougars, panthers, or pumas. and mountain lions are not considered endangered or threatened. so what should you do if you ever see a mountain lion in your neighborhood? we have a video outlining the steps to take on our website, abc7news.com. now to san jose where there is a new effort to help with the homelessness crisis. according to the last point in time homeless census in san jose in 2017, there were 4300 homeless individuals in the city. of those, only 26% had shelter.

just last month, san jose shut down its tent city known as hope village. supporters of the village say it was helping solve the homeless problem, but the faa said the site was unfit for residential usage. just ten days ago, construction crews broke ground on a big affordable housing project in the downtown area. much of it will go to help homeless veterans. and another long-term housing development for the homeless is slated to open in san jose next monday, a week from today. abc7 news was there as staffers were moving in today and getting ready. and we remind you that abc7 news is committed to building a better bay area, and that includes highlighting solutions for homelessness. abc7 news reporter chris reyes is live in san jose with more on today's efforts to tackle this persistent and perennial problem. chris? >> good afternoon. well, this construction behind me is slated to open at the end of the year is one of 120 low cost housing approved by the

santa clara county in 2016 with a $950 million affordable housing bond. at today's meeting, one woman spoke about how life changing these programs can be. >> my life's different today because jennifer loving came down to the jungle and told me you're going to get housed. i'm going get you out of here, and she gave me hope. >> she was homeless for six years, living in the jungle, at one point the largest homeless camp in the country before it was shut down in 2014. jennifer loving, the woman beside her is ceo of destination home, one of the partner nonprofits helping provide slugses to the homeless crisis in santa clara county. rivera shared her story at this joint city/county meeting to give her insight on what solutions are effective. >> housing first. they need a foundation to prosper from. i'm all about housing people first. >> while housing has been a priority for santa clara county, destination home also wanted to

share a success story. a homeless prevention pilot project, which is going into its third year this july. >> the folks that we've helped, 97% of them are staying housed. a lot of emergency financial assistance, whether it's helping people with a security deposit or a few months of rent, getting cash in their hands quickly so that they can maintain their housing. we're also locking to provide them legal aid and assistance if they're dealing with eviction proceedings, if they're having challenges that they're facing. and then some folks, the car has broken down. >> this meeting was about sharing success stories and to continue to mobilize multiparty participation towards solutions from government to nonprofits to the big tech companies in the area. >> we know the problem's only gotten worse because as we're housing people, more people are getting pushed out on to the street. and so really more and more homelessness prevention is going to a critical strategy for us. >> today destination homes pilot project has helped more than 500 households with 900 more slated for this year.

an army veteran is under arrest, accused of planning a terror attack in southern california. federal prosecutors say he was seeking revenge for last month's deadly mosque attacks in new zealand. here is reporter carlos granda with our sister station in los angeles with what we know about this plot. >> officials say 26-year-old mark steven domingos from reseda wanted to detonate explosive devices in popular areas to kill as many people as possible. >> this is a case in which law enforcement was able to identify a man consumed with hate and bent on mass murder and stop him before he could carry out his attack. >> domingo was an army veteran who was in the middle east from 2012 two 2013. officials say he became a radicalized muslim who expressed support for violent jihad. they say he considered several places to conduct these attacks,

including the santa monica pier. he decided to plant a bomb in long beach at bluff park at a rally this weekend. >> they walked around the area of the planned rally to find places to plant the bombs where crowds would likely gather. in order to inflict the maximum number of deaths. he was arrested shortly thereafter. >> officials say domingo thought he was working with someone who was building a bomb for him. but as it turned out, that person was an undercover operative for the fbi. they say domingo bought nails to be used as shrapnel in these pressure cooker type devices. luckily they found domingo on different chat rooms making violent statements and that caught their attention. >> the radicalization to mobilization to violence. this was -- sometimes we get asked what keeps you up at night. this is case that keeps us up at night. >> domingo was in court this afternoon, and he faces charges of providing support to
