our muni riders. >> challenging to say the least. just last friday, thousands were affected when the muni metro subway in downtown san francisco shut down because of electrical issues. >> on april 12th, a train dragged a woman. her hand was stuck in the door because of a defect on new muni trains. >> now that same day, also on the new trains, there was a failure on the coupler system meaning they could not be linked to make longer trains. and now new fallout. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze. the head of muni announced his resignation after the disastrous month. edre reiskin will leave this center. luis pena has more on this. >> muni riders said it's been a bad muni, but you and i know it has been bad years for this system. and the mayor of san francisco said she wants a new director, and she wants this person to be hired immediately.

via email announcing his resignation, muni's top transit official explained the employment agreement i have with the sfmta's board of directors ends in august, and it becomes clear this is the right time for a change. hours later, the mayor of san francisco, london breed, responded. >> we're looking for someone who understands the bigger picture. it's not just one thing that this department represents. we need a real transportation expert who understands the complexities of what it means to run a major transit system. >> breed sent out a letter to the board of directors reque requesting an immediate search for a new director. dur she referred to a month-long list of problems with muni, equipment failures that led to a day of delays and operators refusing to work overtime. >> challenging time over the past couple of months for our muni riders, for our system, and i do think it's important that

we demonstrate with action that we plan to make serious changes. >> san francisco supervisor acknowledged that muni's problems are also money problems. >> we have another bond coming up in the next year or two. it's in the cue. but it's also about creating an agency that's more accountable to the public. >> some supervisors say this resignation was bound to happen after last august mayor london breed wrote a letter to sfmta expressing her concerns and frustrations where the system. some supervisors we spoke to today also said that they want sfmta to be more accountable to the board of supervisors and not just be the ones who give them money. in san francisco, luz pena, abc7 news. >> all right, luz, thank you so much. in the north bay, a big account caused quite a scare in an unusual place. a mountain lion roamed around the santa rosa plaza mall outside of a macy's store. abc7 news reporter wayne

freedman is there live tonight with a look at how wildlife crews captured th ed thid this . >> wayne? >> they did it with patience and tranquilizer, and they did it in that planter right over there behind me. it's the story of a mountain lion in the wrong place in a modern time. the good news, we have a happy ending. you could walk the streets of santa rosa for 100 years and still not see what people did today, even though a century ago it might have been more common. >> mountain lions are charismatic, iconic animals. >> but rarely do they go to sleep in a planter outside of a macy's store. this one did. yes, they had cats on their minds inside yoga one across the street today. >> there he is. >> lawyer rell had quite the view outside her window. >> i was standing right up here with my phone. >> and you shot it? >> i shot a video, not the mountain lion.

rali servinas thetched, they saw that it did not take effect immediately. >> a young cat that age would only weigh about 50 pounds. >> dr. quinton martins of the wild lion project showed up to help and take tissue samples today. h describes this cat as a juvenile, probably local, searching for territory it can call home. >> they're moving and moving until they get to a place where they can find a gap in the landscape to settle down. and that may take a couple of years. >> and perhaps thousands of miles. this mountain lion may have moved into the city to escape an older more established one. generally speaking, mountain lions pose no threat to humans. if you were here today, chances are you scared the mountain lion more than it might have scared you. >> poor guy. everybody deserves a home. >> once they got it to sleep, fish and wildlife took the mountain lion away and released into it the wilderness. fifth and b in santa rosa just a distant memory to it now, an intersection where the urban and

the wild crossed paths briefly. mountain lions roam all across california. roughly you'll find four for every 100 square miles. so the question is how did this mountain lion get into santa rosa? simple. they think it wandered in through santa rosa creek. in santa rosa, wayne freedman, abc7. >> oh, follow the creek. that makes sense. wayne, thank you. all right. let's talk some numbers. state officials say as many as 6,000 mountain lions roam california. they're also known as cougars, panthers, or pumas. and mountain lions are not considered endangered or threatened. so what should you do if you ever see a mountain lion in your neighborhood? we have a video outlining the steps to take on our website, abc7news.com. now to san jose where there is a new effort to help with the homelessness crisis. according to the last point in time homeless census in san jose in 2017, there were 4300 homeless individuals in the city. of those, only 26% had shelter.

just last month, san jose shut down its tent city known as hope village. supporters of the village say it was helping solve the homeless problem, but the faa said the site was unfit for residential usage. just ten days ago, construction crews broke ground on a big affordable housing project in the downtown area. much of it will go to help homeless veterans. and another long-term housing development for the homeless is slated to open in san jose next monday, a week from today. abc7 news was there as staffers were moving in today and getting ready. and we remind you that abc7 news is committed to building a better bay area, and that includes highlighting solutions for homelessness. abc7 news reporter chris reyes is live in san jose with more on today's efforts to tackle this persistent and perennial problem. chris? >> good afternoon. well, this construction behind me is slated to open at the end of the year is one of 120 low cost housing approved by the

santa clara county in 2016 with a $950 million affordable housing bond. at today's meeting, one woman spoke about how life changing these programs can be. >> my life's different today because jennifer loving came down to the jungle and told me you're going to get housed. i'm going get you out of here, and she gave me hope. >> she was homeless for six years, living in the jungle, at one point the largest homeless camp in the country before it was shut down in 2014. jennifer loving, the woman beside her is ceo of destination home, one of the partner nonprofits helping provide slugses to the homeless crisis in santa clara county. rivera shared her story at this joint city/county meeting to give her insight on what solutions are effective. >> housing first. they need a foundation to prosper from. i'm all about housing people first. >> while housing has been a priority for santa clara county, destination home also wanted to

share a success story. a homeless prevention pilot project, which is going into its third year this july. >> the folks that we've helped, 97% of them are staying housed. a lot of emergency financial assistance, whether it's helping people with a security deposit or a few months of rent, getting cash in their hands quickly so that they can maintain their housing. we're also locking to provide them legal aid and assistance if they're dealing with eviction proceedings, if they're having challenges that they're facing. and then some folks, the car has broken down. >> this meeting was about sharing success stories and to continue to mobilize multiparty participation towards solutions from government to nonprofits to the big tech companies in the area. >> we know the problem's only gotten worse because as we're housing people, more people are getting pushed out on to the street. and so really more and more homelessness prevention is going to a critical strategy for us. >> today destination homes pilot project has helped more than 500 households with 900 more slated for this year.

so today's meeting was really a pivot point for the city and county to assess what's working and what's not working since they embarked on this holistic approach more than three and a half years ago. since then they housed more than 7,000 people, but the problem keeps getting worse, which is why today's meeting is also a chance to highlight the success of prevention programs and to double down on similar strategies. live in san jose, i'm kris reyes for abc7 news. >> we want to hear your news about building a better bay area. share them by joining our better bay group on facebook. in the ohs bay opening statements set to start tomorrow for two men charged in connection with the ghost ship warehouse fire. this comes two and a half years after a fire at an artist collective in oakland killed 36 people. today a jury was selected. abc7 news reporter laura anthony was in the courtroom. >> we're delighted in the jury that was selected. >> the panel that will decide the fate of ghost ship defendan ee s a

or in with openg atements now set to begin. >> it's a beautiful cross section of all races, dominated by women, nine women, three men, but we have age. we have you know, the wisdom of older people. we have the exuberance and the idealism of young people. >> almena and harris both faced 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the december 2016 fire in a fruitvale district warehouse. prosecutors are expected to argue that the two men were aware conditions in the warehouse were unsafe. and that they lied to officials and the building's owners about the fact that people were living there. >> should your client have known that some of that was dangerous, that pallets and electricity strung from here to there was dangerous? >> well, one of the main themes of our defense is no one red tagged him. no one came in and inspected and

told them that it was a fire hazard. >> defense attorneys plan to argue that harris and almena are not criminally responsible for the fire, and that the city of oakland and building owner chore ing share the blame, though no one else has been criminally charged. sarah said his client is anxious to prove his innocence and is not doing well behind bars. >> my client, he's not a criminal. he's an artist. he's never been in jail before. he's clean, and he's suffering. >> laura anthony, abc7 news. well, terror plot in southern california. the fbi says an army veteran planned to detonate a bomb. how he was stopped from carrying it out. and what some call generation lockdown. a new video and a new push to keep kids safe in an era of mass shootings. and sour grapes. why both steve kerr and the houston rockets are crying foul over the play-offs. i'm meteorologist sandhya patel. breezy and cooler tomorrow.

an army veteran is under arrest, accused of planning a terror attack in southern california. federal prosecutors say he was seeking revenge for last month's deadly mosque attacks in new zealand. here is reporter carlos granda with our sister station in los angeles with what we know about this plot. >> officials say 26-year-old mark steven domingos from reseda wanted to detonate explosive devices in popular areas to kill as many people as possible. >> this is a case in which law enforcement was able to identify a man consumed with hate and bent on mass murder and stop him before he could carry out his attack. >> domingo was an army veteran who was in the middle east from 2012 two 2013. officials say he became a radicalized muslim who expressed support for violent jihad. they say he considered several places to conduct these attacks,

including the santa monica pier. he decided to plant a bomb in long beach at bluff park at a rally this weekend. >> they walked around the area of the planned rally to find places to plant the bombs where crowds would likely gather. in order to inflict the maximum number of deaths. he was arrested shortly thereafter. >> officials say domingo thought he was working with someone who was building a bomb for him. but as it turned out, that person was an undercover operative for the fbi. they say domingo bought nails to be used as shrapnel in these pressure cooker type devices. luckily they found domingo on different chat rooms making violent statements and that caught their attention. >> the radicalization to mobilization to violence. this was -- sometimes we get asked what keeps you up at night. this is case that keeps us up at night. >> domingo was in court this afternoon, and he faces charges of providing support to

terrorists. if convicted, he could get up to 15 years in federal prison. reporting from los angeles, i'm carlos granda, abc7 news. a state lawmaker wants california school kids to be better prepared for an active shooter. legislation by l.a. prosecutor requires california to practice drills every year. right now the drills are carried out only at the discretion of each school. march for our lives featured a new service announcement featuring adults receiving that training from a special instructor. >> we're going bring in a special guest. she is actually an expert on this. >> if there was an active shooter, you would all be dead. you can try and protect your friends by pushing and tables and chairs against the doors you. also have to put a piece of paper over the door window so they can't see in. and you can't cry. it gives away your position and

your hiding spot. >> march for our lives says the two-minute-long video was filmed during an actual training exercise in san diego county and was not scripted. >> that is intense. airbnb is about to get some competition from a hotel chain. >> and the ftc is hard at work stopping schemes in their tracks. >> 7 on your side's michael finney is here. >> we'll start with the ftc. some cool news there. the federal trade commission has just filed a report on what it was up in 2018. the agency says it has been getting a lot of money back for consumers. last year, the commission returned nearly $2.5 billion to those who were taken in by bad actors. some of those forced to pay were companies selling unproven dietary supplements, people hocking work at home plans and debt collectors. a revenge porn website was shut down permanently, and its om operators paid more than $2

million on restitution. a deal on video streaming service is coming to an end, but you can still get in on it if you fur. philo offers a streaming package with 45 tv channels for $16, but will stop selling that package next week. after that, philo's cheapest plan will have more channels going for $20 a month. if you sign up now, you can keep the offering but you have to sign up this week. a the beginning tomorrow, airbnb will be taking reservations for 2,000 rental homes in 100 markets in the u.s., europe, and latin america. marriott is targeting families and groups. prices range from $200 a night for a one-bedroom apartment to $10,000 for a full scottish castle. turn about is fair play. the airbnb is now saying it'g o hotel in new york. >> no kidding? >> everybody is crossing back

and forth. >> thank you, michael. >> sure. the houston rockets are doing some data mining to get an edge on the warriors. >> okay. after last night's close loss to golden state, it was revealed that the rockets compiled a list of fouls the team says were not called during the referees during last year's game seven loss. the information was communicated to nba officials. >> in documents, 81 apparent missed calls in houston says that cost them the championship. warriors coach steve kerr had some fun with the whole thing today. >> and check this out. that's him having fun. that's kerr pretending to be crowded by a reporter and flopping forward to get foul. >> he was referencing a pivotal play at the end of the game when houston's james harden pushed forward and collided with draymond green, as you see here. the referees did not call it a foulgu said it was the correct call. >> kerr says complaining about the referees has always been part of the game. >> you don't think there were ten calls thatt goes.

for parts of so cal. i know it's late april. that's not stopping the systems from coming through and keeping the heat away i from the bay area. today's temperatures were in the upper 50s for the highs to the low 70s. so really a pleasant start to the workweek. here is a look at what you can expect. areas of fog and patchy drizzle overnight tonight. we're looking at bright and breezy conditions the next few day, and yes, you heard right there. is a slight chance of rain this upcoming weekend. here is a live picture from our golden gate bridge camera. you can see the marine layer is advancing across the bridge there. we will be watching for that marine layer to expand in the overnight hours, and those temperatures will fall. santa rosa gusting to 20 miles an hour right now. 20 miles in napa. a little breezy out there towards travis air force base as well. so with the windy conditions, it's not exactly a great time of year for many of us suffering from allergies. high tree pollen over the next four days. pine, oak, juniper and cedar is what is the main culprits over the next four days that will

probably cause if you have allergies some problems. morning overcast. 40s, 50s, clouds will be departing at noon. and it's a breezy but bright afternoon. upper 50s to the mid-70s. the temperatures will come down by 7:00 p.m. pentagon forecast showing you the expanding fog layer as we head towards tomorrow morning. even some drizzle along the coast is not out of the question between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. first thing in the morning, look out for the fog. make sure you dress in layers because it will be a cool start. temperatures mid 40s to the low 50s. tomorrow afternoon, 62 in san francisco. 66, oakland. 69 in san rafael. 74, santa rosa. pretty nice looking day. low 70s around napa, concord and livermore. 65 in santa cruz. it will be breezy, though. if you're look for warmer weather, wednesday the warming begins with upper 70s inland. thursday some low 80s, and you will notice that friday, inland areas will see the temperatures coming up. you can track the temperatures

petersburg some experts speculate the whale was trained by the russian navy. a biologist says the russian navy has been known to train belugas to conduct military operations before. things like guarding naval base, helping divers and finding lost equipment. >> interesting. nasa scientists are trying to figure out the best way to survive a large asteroid hitting earth. nasa and fema ran a drill today with scientists from around the world to consider planetary defense strategies. options include devising a way to deflect the asteroid and mass evacuations. scientists remind us though it could happen, a really large asteroid crashing into earth is extremely unlikely, which is a bit comforting to hear. >> yeah. okay. i saw the movie this past weekend, along with so many other people. >> record setting. >> yes. so now let's go behind the scenes. >> chris pratt sneakily captures video of special moments on the
